Willing Willie case affirms power of social media

Online outrage over child abuse
Once again, social media in the Philippines proved its growing power when the high-flying host Willie Revillame announced last Friday that his show,Willing Willie, would be off the air for two weeks starting Monday, April 11.

Revillame sounded doubtful if the six-month old early evening show that for a while threatened to upset the public’s news viewing habits would continue.

Said to be the highest paid TV personality, reportedly earning the mind-boggling amount of P3 million a day, even his future in showbusiness is now in peril.

Will be back

MTRCB considers suspension of ‘Willing Willie’

Suspension ruling out April 7
The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) is expected to rule on Thursday, April 7, on the controversy over the March 12 episode of TV5’s early evening variety show “Willing Willie” where host Willie Revillame goaded a tearful six-year old boy into doing a sexually suggestive dance while the audience laughed at the child.

But if for some reasons they would have to delay the ruling, MTRCB Chair Grace Poe-Llamanzares said, “There are talks of a preventive suspension. That’s one option.”

Another MTRCB official, who asked not to be named because he was not the authorized spokesperson, said, “There’s no question about the suspension. What is being discussed is for how long.”
