Gloria Arroyo forever

US plays game with Arroyo

Update: Rape victim Nicole in US “for good”, terminates services of lawyer.

It is no idle coincidence that the arrest of family members of disgraced Maj. Gen. Carlos Garcia , former comptroller of the Armed Forces of the Philippines happened at the time when calls for the abrogation of Visiting Forces Agreement is mounting.

They are part of a high-stakes power play that sadly reduces the Filipino people as pawns. For the United States, at stake is their being able to maintain their diminishing dominance in Asia Pacific amid China’s growing global influence. For Gloria Arroyo, it’s political survival.

Fourteen months away from the end of her corruption-riddled presidency, Gloria Arroyo has been begging for a photo-opportunity with the new U.S president thinking that the picture would negate the creeping impression that the Americans have written her off especially after the World Bank released the report that her husband Mike Arroyo is involved in corruption in public works projects.

WB report says Mike Arroyo got 5% commission: Lacson

GMA diverts to US, catches DFA by surprise

From Malaya:

President Arroyo is making a quick visit to the United States on Wednesday, catching by surprise even Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo.

Based on Arroyo’s original schedule, she should have left Milan, Italy last night (Manila time) for Saudi Arabia. She was expected in Bahrain Wednesday for an official visit.

A naughty mind in the Palace said maybe the President is still angling for a meeting, even if by chance, with US President Barack Obama.

Gloria Arroyo clutching at straws

This story shows how desperate Gloria Arroyo and her drumbeaters are.

On Jan. 2, Press Secretary Jesus Dureza issued this statement:

“It’s encouraging to note that we have been cited in Bloomberg today, as one of the resilient economies in Asia, along with China. Amidst global financial downturn, we continue to post strong currency and fiscal position. Undeniably, this is the result of the economic reforms instituted by the President early on.

While difficult days are expected ahead, we are in a better position to weather them as long as we keep the course and resist the temptation of divisive politics.

The Philippines and China were being cited as the two Asian economies that fared the best in 2008 and that will do well in 2009.

The following story by TJ Burgonio and Maxim Lucas is in the Inquirer today:

The ultimate insult

Not a few wish that what happened to U.S. President George W. Bush in Baghdad last Monday would also happen to Gloria Arroyo.

What happened to Bush the other day in Baghdad is all over TV, newspapers, You Tube, blogs. He was holding a press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki as part of his farewell tour before he turns over the reins of the United States government to president-elect Barack Obama on Jan. 20, 2009, when a television journalist threw shoes at him.

The swiftness of the action stunned even Bush security team. The journalist, Muntadar al-Zeidi of an Iraqi-owned TV network based in Cairo, Egypt, was able to hurl at Bush his pair of shoes one after another as he shouted, “”This is a farewell kiss, you dog.”

Arroyo’s praetorian guards

The military’s seniority and merit systems are again being strained to protect the illegitimate presidency of Gloria Arroyo.

One of the military officials whose promotion is awaiting confirmation by the Commission on Appointments is Brig. Gen. John Martir.

Martir is one extremely lucky guy. Despite a pending case of malversation of funds and falsification of documents before the Ombudsman, the Board of Generals recommended him for promotion to two-star rank (major general). This is the Martir’ second promotion in six months. Last June he was confirmed as brigadier general despite his having gone on AWOL (absent without leave) for more than one year ( 477) days during the period July 1998 to January 2000.

‘Unhappy is the land that needs a hero’

I’d like Gloria Arroyo and her cabal in the House of Representatives to push charter change to the end.

So what if 64 per cent of Filipinos oppose charter change that would result in Gloria Arroyo staying in power forever? (Only 15 percent agree and 21 per cent are undecided, according to a September-October 2008 survey by the Social Weather Station)

What can those 64 percent, that roughly translates to almost 60 million Filipinos, do? Majority of Filipinos also believe that Gloria Arroyo cheated in the 2004 elections but did they do anything to punish the person who masterminded the thwarting of their will?
