Performing artists express desire to help typhoon victims

The typhoon that killed hundreds in the Visayan region elicited shock and an outpouring of sympathy from the country’s leading performing artists.

“It is horribly sad,” said pianist Cecile Licad who expressed willingness to participate in any fundraising concert. The pianist once again received standing ovations for her performance of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with Hawaii Symphony and the San Antonio Symphony in Texas.

Another artist who wanted to cheer typhoon victims is violinist Cho Liang Lin who has forthcoming engagements with the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan and the symphony orchestras of Detroit, San Antonio, and Shanghai. He wrote to Licad saying how deeply he was touched by the plight of typhoon victims. “If there are events that I can help to cheer the victims, please let me know. I am in!” the noted violinist said.

Even legends get the jitters

Another musical event to look forward to.

It may come as a surprise to some that seasoned pianist Cecile Licad, ballerina Lisa Macuja and singer Lea Salonga, who continue to light up stages here and abroad, confess to pre-concert jitters.

A blunt Licad says, “I’m always agitated and nervous before every show since I was seven. But as I get older, I’m less afraid of screwing up things. Everything in life is not perfect so why not make an art of screwing up? I’d ask the presentor if I can have a siling labuyo (hot chili pepper), I eat it. The taste keeps me awake.”

Salonga shares that she paces a lot before a show starts, apart from warming up her throat, to free herself of nervousness. She adds, “I can’t sit still. I go through the blocking and lyrics in my head. I stay hydrated and don’t talk too much. Praying keeps my calm.”

Cecile Licad pays tribute to Chopin

cecile licad In observance of Frederic Chopin’s bicentenary, pianist Cecile Licad performs in an all-Chopin recital on Saturday, March 27, 8 p.m. Philamlife Theater, UN Avenue, Manila.

Program: Chopin’s 4 Scherzos and 24 Preludes. She is soloist of the Manila Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Molina on Monday, March 29, 8 p.m. also at Philamlife Theater playing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 i F minor.

She will go on an outreach concert with MSO in Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija on March 23 and another solo concert at the Atheneum School of Noveleta, Cavite on March 30, 6 p.m.. Call 7484152 or 09065104270.

Earlier, Licad gave a preview of her tribute to Chopin at, of all places, Ayala mall.

Music impresario Pablo Tariman reported on that joyous event:

“The music of Chopin had an unlikely exposure in – of all places – the Ayala Malls Thursday (March 18) and it ended in a rousing standing ovation for Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor performed with unbelievable subtlety and fervor by the Manila Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Arturo Molina.
