Hindi dahil Azkal, pwedeng mambastos

Cristy Ramos

Azkals play to kick breast cancer

Sports heroes with a heart
All the more that I love the Azkals.

Not only have they brought honor to the country and revitalized football in the Philippines without depending so much on the government, we are about to experience their concern for others.

On the third week of this month, there will be a 3-team friendly soccer tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium featuring the Azkals, Kaya Futbol Club, and Global Futbol Club for the benefit of IcanServe Foundation, a non-stock, non-profit organization composed mostly of breast cancer survivors who are into information crusade about breast cancer and the benefits of early detection.

On Sept. 19 (Monday), it’s the Azkals vs KayaFC ; Sept. 21(Wednesday), Azkals vs GlobalFC , and on Sept. 24 (Saturday) KayaFC vs GlobalFC. The two-hour games will start at 3:00 pm.

Of Azkals and Pusakals

OFW power
Never mind the 3-0 score. What was amazing in Kuwait last Saturday was OFW power for the Azkals.

The photos posted by “Pamatay Homesick” in his Facebook Wall give us an exhilarating feeling.

Filipinos in Kuwait came in droves, most probably took a day off from work, to give moral support to the team that is now giving Filipinos a new sense of pride.

Mabuhay!”

He added: “Kahit tayo ay nasawi, tayo parin ang nagwagi!”

That’s the attitude.

The Azkals have already achieved something priceless – making Filipinos proud of being Filipino. That, by itself, is already a score.

The view from the bar: Azkals vs. Mongolia

I enjoyed this article as much as when I was watching the game on TV last night.

I can’t tell you how exhilarating it was to be at Panaad Stadium for the Philippines-Mongolia AFC Challenge Cup match. I can’t tell you because I don’t know.

I was unable to fly to Bacolod, so I had planned to catch the game at home. But Sky Cable chose this day, of all days, to have a massive service interruption, forcing me to find an establishment that was showing the match.

It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because there are few things in this world that are more fun to do than watch the Azkals with a bunch of strangers, collectively cheer and scream, slap high fives, slowly get intoxicated, and listen to one of them adoringly compare Chieffy Caligdong to Pele.

Envoy’s account of PHL win over Vietnam in Asean Football Suzuki Cup tournament

Philippine Ambassador to Vietnam Jerril Santos has an exhilarating account of the PHL-Vietnam football game last Sunday in his Facebook wall. He has granted me permission to use it here.

He first wrote in his wall: “PHL-2, VN-0! great game! The local support for the defending champion,Vietnamese team, was just amazing but the Philippine team’s performance induced My Dinh Stadium into a stunned silence. What an achievement!”

Jerril related how it was to be in “enemy” territory:

“The few Pinoys in the stadium – three of us in the grandstand area we were in – couldn’t cheer as much as we wanted. It would be foolish to do that in a sea of 40,000 fans who were lustily cheering their team…cheering that turned to anger and frustration at their team’s inability to beat an underdog Philippines.”
