Latest on the persecution of men of honor

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported today that Col. Januario Caringal, former deputy commander of the 2nd Marine Brigade, is in a critical condition after falling ill while in detention at Fort San Felipe in Cavite City.

Marine Spokesman Ariel Caculitan said Caringal was rushed to the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center (former V. Luna Hospital ) in Quezon City on Nov. 3 and transferred to the hospital’s intensive care unit on Nov. 6. Doctors found him to be suffering from acute hepatitis B and hypertension.

Caringal with five other marine officers namely Col. Ariel Querubin, Col. Orlando de Leon, Lt. Col. Armando Bañez ,Lt. Col. Custodio Parcon, and Lt. Col. Achilles Segumalian were transferred to Fort San Felipe from the Marine Custodial Center in Fort Bonifacio past midnight of Oct. 29 upon orders of AFP Chief of Staff Hermogenes Esperon who cited intelligence reports of a plan to spring Querubin from prison.

Joc-joc Bolante lies and lies

This is lawyer Harry Roque’s report on the trial of former Agriculture Undersecretary Jocelyn “Joc-Joc” Bolante:

As expected, Joc-Joc Bolante filled the Chicago Immigration Courtroom with falsehood and lies. While he initially reiterated matters which he mentioned in his affidavit when he was apprehended in LA, such as, that he had a valid US visa and that he did not get any of the two letters sent to him by the US emvbassy in Manila about his visa revocation; he nonetheless submitted that he was a victim of political persecution on the part of the Philipine Senate.

Hot Mama, Hot Papa

In all power struggles, there are behind- the-scene tales of corruption and sex scandals.

Sometime last week of October, a young cabinet member of Gloria Arroyo met with an opposition senator with explosive information about the love affair of another senior cabinet official and a female member of the Consultative Commission formed by Gloria Arroyo to recommend revisions to be made in the Constitution.

The information from the cabinet member allegedly contained details of what had been talked about in coffee shops and passed around in text messages. In fact, a short item came out in www.uniffors.com, the blog of the underground group of foreign service employees, last Sept. 27, 2006.

Alan loses first round

What do you expect from the Malacañang-controlled House of Representatives? The Daily Tribune’s report on the harrassment of Mike Arroyo of Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano:

By Dona Policar

Where before, in at least two impeachment bids against President Arroyo, administration congressmen quickly dismissed these complaints on technicalities and saying they were lacking in form and substance, the presidential allies in the House of Representatives yesterday found the complaint of First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, his congressman-brother, Ignacio and two sons, Rep. Juan Miguel and Diosdado, who is also gunning for a congres-sional seat, meeting the requirements of form and substance, paving the way for the investigation against Deputy Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano that would lead to his expulsion from the House.

Cayetano (Taguig-Pateros) yesterday lost the first round of the many battles raised against him by the very influential figure from Malacañang, the presidential spouse, as the allies of Mr. Arroyo went all out to lay the groundwork for their colleagues’ expulsion, with their instant cognizant of the complaint filed by the First Gentleman against Cayetano before the House ethics committee yesterday.

Survival at all cost

The resignation of Defense Secretary Avelino “Nonong” Cruz Jr. signals a situation more destructive and dangerous than the bickerings over the People’s Initiative that was junked by the Supreme Court as fraudulent.

Reliable sources said Cruz felt he was losing control over the armed forces to members of the cabinet who want to use the military for the Arroyo administration to survive at all cost.

Cruz is aware of the strong sentiments among military officers about being used in the cheating operations as what happened in the 2004 elections and he feels “he could no longer guarantee to officers that the military will be insulated” from electoral fraud that Malacañang operators would be perpetrating in the 2007 elections.

P500M ‘Bolantic’ caper caused PNOC chief to quit

From Malaya:

BY JOCELYN MONTEMAYOR

EDUARDO Mañalac yesterday said he resigned as president of the Philippine National Oil Co. because he feared he would be turned by the Palace into a Jocelyn “Joc Joc” Bolante for the May mid-term elections.

Bolante, former agriculture undersecretary, was tagged by a Senate investigation as the architect of the diversion of P728 million for fertilizers to the campaign chest of President Arroyo last 2004. He is detained in a Wisconsin detention facility over problems with his US visa.

Mañalac, in a radio interview, said he was pressured by Planning Secretary Romulo Neri to come up with P500 million to finance a nationwide program to plant jatropha, a shrub whose fruits yield a substitute for diesel.

Cruz feared use of AFP in poll fraud

Why Nonong Cruz resigned, according to Malaya
:

BY VICTOR REYES AND DENNIS GADIL

DEFENSE Secretary Avelino “Nonong” Cruz decided to resign because he could “no longer guarantee” that the military would not be used to cheat in the mid-term elections in May, a defense official said yesterday.

The official said Cruz planned to tender his resignation in December, but the Supreme Court junking of the people’s initiative to amend the 1987 forced his hand.

Cruz handed over his resignation paper, which takes effect Nov. 30, to Arroyo on Sunday. He did not say why he was tendering his irrevocable resignation.

More equal than others

The incident between Luli Arroyo and Immigration officer Edgardo Padlan underscored the accepted reality in this world that men and women may be born equal but there are those who are more equal than others.

At Bank of the Philippine Islands and its sister-banks, BPI Family Banks, they have a special lane for “Preferred Clients”. One time, at the BPI Family Alabang-Zapote branch, the line at the counter for ordinary clients was very long. One depositor transferred to the shorter line of “Preferred Clients”.

As expected, he was told to go back to where he belonged. He didn’t take it kindly and berated the teller for discriminating against small depositors.
