Huwag umasa sa simbahan

Habang sinusulat ko ito, mga alas tres ng hapon,may mga nagra-rally sa Makati sa harap ng Ninoy Aquino monument sa panulukan ng Ayala Avenue at Paseo de Roxas.

Sabi ng Malaya reporter, mga 5,000 raw ang mga tao. Nandoon sina Bishop Yniquez at Makati Rep. Butz Aquino. Nakita ko sa TV na maraming nawawagayway na bandila. Karamihan ay pula.

Sa rally sa Luneta noong Linggo, medyo napag-usapan na ito ng mga naii-inis sa nangyari doon na hindi man lamang sila makawagayway ng kanilang bandila o magdala ng streamers na magpapahiwatig ng kanilang saloobin laban sa administrasyong Arroyo.

Nearing the end-game

I think we are nearing the end-game of the political crisis rooted in the cheating by Gloria Arroyo in the 2004 elections.

The Luneta rally yesterday, whether it was attended by 150,000 as estimated by participants or 15,000 as counted by the police,was a ringing political statement that the people have not forgiven Gloria Arroyo despite the cancellation of the abominable “House-only” Con-Ass and her retreat from her Charter Change advocacy.

All sectors of society were represented in yesterday’s Luneta gathering. The Erap’s “masa” were there wearing orange headbands with a “No to Cha-Cha” message.

REFORMS in government, including in the electoral system, should first be instituted before tinkering with the Constitution, Church leaders said in an anti-Charter change rally held yesterday at the Quirino Grandstand at the Luneta.

“Mas magiging maayos ang charter change na pino-propose (nila) kung magkakaroon muna ng pagbabago sa mga tao bago ang kung ano man ang baguhin… tulad ng Saligang Batas natin,” said Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines which initiated the rally.

Magkita-kita tayo mamaya sa rally sa Luneta.

Itong rally sa Luneta, maliban sa sabay-sabay nating pagdarasal sa tunay na kapayapaan at pasalamat sa naunsyaming pagyurak sa Saligang Batas nina Gloria Arroyo, Joe de Venecia at ang kanilang mga kasamahan, ay pagpapakita na gising na ang sambayanang Pilipino.

Marami ang nagtatanong, kung ano ang mangyayari pagkatapos ng rally. Sa akin kung tuloy-tuloy ito at mauwi sa political rally katulad ng “People Power” noong February 1986 at January 2001, okay lang. Kung hindi naman, hindi ibig sabihin noon ligtas na si Gloria Arroyo.

Rep. Luis Bersamin of the lone distict of Abra was killed when two unidentified men shot him in an ambush after he attended a mass in Mt. Carmel church in Quezon City.

The ambush on Bersamin came only four days after a similar ambush was attempted on Pasig Representative Robert “Dodot” Jaworski Jr., who cited politics or the illegal drug trade as possible motives, and after revelations by officials of an alleged plot to assassinate House Majority Leader Prospero Nograles.

Arroyo may attend rally at her own risk:bishops

ORGANIZERS of Sunday’s prayer rally at the Quirino Grandstand yesterday said President Arroyo and her administration allies can come to the gathering but they will not be answerable for the public’s reaction to their presence.

Much as the organizers stress that tomorrow’s rally is “apolitical”, the assembly of thousands opposed to Gloria Arroyo and her allies in the House of Representatives is a forceful political statement.

A mammoth crowd would underscore the political isolation of Gloria Arroyo.

Remembering Guinsaugon

Canadian Ambassador Peter Sutherland turns over a sack of seedlings to Emilio Punio, barangay captain of Guinsaugon, St.Bernard, Southern Leyte, as a symbol of Canada’s assistance to the village that was hardest hit by the mudslides last February.

While most of us have moved on to other tragedies and have forgotten the victims of the mudslides in Guinsaugon early this year, the Canadian government cares about those who have been left behind and is helping them recover from the misfortune.

Ambassador Sutherland visited Southern Leyte recently to see the projects that received assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency through the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives.

A delightful respite

Thanks, Ilya Rashkovsky, for a spectacular evening of music.

It was a delightful respite from the emotionally-draining battle against forces that want to bastardize the Constitution to suit their own selfish agenda. Now we are re-charged for Sunday’s big rally and for other battles ahead.

We are glad that we decided to watch the debut performance of the young Russian pianist Ilya Rashkovsky at the Philamlife auditorium in Manila. “He is phenomenal,” enthused concert pianist Ingrid Santamaria.
