Romanian violinist in Saturday concert

Romanian violin superstar Alexandru Tomescu, winner of several international violin competitions including the Paganini Competitions in Italy and the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition in Paris, will pay tribute to Filipino violin greats when he returns at the Philamlife Theater Saturday, February 24, 2007, 8 p.m. with pianist Mary Anne Espina.

Lozada and Redentor Romero.

Villar hits Arroyo during PMA homecoming

Fom ABS-CBN news:

No campaign poster was allowed inside the Philippine Military Academy in Fort del Pilar in Baguio City Saturday and politicians adopted by different PMA class were not around during its alumni homecoming but the event still did not escape politics.

ABS-CBN News reported that guest speaker and re-electionist Senate President Manuel Villar took the occasion to hit the Arroyo administration in its alleged railroading of Charter change.

In his speech, Villar scored allies of President Arroyo for their alleged efforts to hastily amend the 1987 Constitution without going through the proper procedures.

Do you still trust…?

Malaya

Yesterday I read a news report that said that Namfrel and the CBCP were teaming up to do another quick-count. Immediately, I was seized by a feeling of disbelief, if not disgust. Namfrel, doing another quick count?

Does that mean that people still trust Namfrel?

Frankly, I’ve lost whatever respect I have had left of Namfrel as an independent, quick-count organization. The last straw was Namfrel chair Joe Concepcion insisting that there was no cheating in the 2004 elections or, as I suspect he will say now, no cheating on a scale massive enough to bring into question the over-all results. This, despite the taped voices that anyone trying to avoid a lawsuit would say “sounds like” the voices of the incumbent president and a non-disgraced elections commissioner, and despite the very obvious cover-up that started with the now-infamous “I have two discs” performance of Ignacio Bunye (who, in that one fell swoop damaged his credibility beyond the after-life).

Why hide the Melo Commission report?

Gloria Arroyo always talks about transparency. Read this brilliant piece by Raul Pangalangan, columnist of the Philippine Daily Inquirer

Malacañang created the Melo Commission to inquire into extrajudicial executions, but won’t show the Melo Report to the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions.Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita declares that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo supports the UN inquiry “for purposes of transparency, to show them that the [Arroyo] government is doing everything to address [the killings].” But apparently “everything” does not include showing the Melo Report — not to the United Nations, not to the European Union, which has expressed its alarm at the unabated killings, and certainly not to the Filipino people.

Amnesia

In the song, “The Way We Were”, there’s a line What’s too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget.

That’s the appropriate theme song and slogan for Gloria Arroyo’s amnesia- afflicted senatorial candidates.

In ANC’s “Strictly Politics” last Tuesday, host Pia Hontiveros recalled for re-electionist Edgardo Angara the scenes during the congressional canvassing of votes of the 2004 presidential election where he, Tito Sotto, and Tessie Oreta accused Gloria Arroyo of cheating their candidate, Fernando Poe, Jr.

Sabi niya, “I volunteered.”

Tinanong ni Pia, paano at kailan. Hindi na ngayon malaman ni Kiram kung ano ang sagot. Sabi niya, “I did not volunteer.”

Sabi ni Pia, kasasabi lang ninyo na nag-volunteer kayo. Sabi ni Kiram na parang ina-antok, “Okay I said I did, but I’m taking it back.
