Col. Querubin goes to the Supreme Court

Three days before the next hearing of the special general court martial formed to try them for their alleged withdrawal of support from the bogus president that is Gloria Arroyo in February 2006, Marine Col. Ariel Querubin went to the Supreme Court to stop the court martial proceedings of what they describe as kangaroo court.

Here’s Inquirer’s report by Tetch Torres:

Jailed Marine Colonel Ariel Querubin has asked the Supreme Court to stop his court-martial for attempted mutiny, saying the Court of Appeals abused its discretion and committed serious errors when it dismissed his plea to prevent the military from hearing his case.

Who is afraid of Cavaliers?

I’m not a bit worried about the plan of Senators Rodolfo Biazon, Panfilo Lacson, Gregorio Honasan and Antonio Trillanes IV to form an informal Cavaliers Club in the Senate.

Cavalier is a term used for an alumnus of the Philippine Military Academy.

For the first time in the history of the Philippine Senate, out of the 23 senators (Alfredo Lim’s seat is vacant after his election as Manila mayor), four are PMA graduates with Trillanes, who is still awaiting proclamation, as the latest addition.

Tapos, nag brown out.

Patay.

The military survey, in Conrado de Quiroz’ column

THE military is conducting a survey to determine if its officers and men have negative sentiments on the likely senatorial victory of mutiny leader Antonio Trillanes IV.

The announced reason: The military leadership wants to determine if there are “dissenting opinions” because these could trigger “rumblings within the organization,” Lt. Col. Bartolome Bacarro, chief of the AFP public information office, said yesterday.

Trillanes, a Navy senior grade lieutenant when he led the Oakwood mutiny in July 2003, is in 11th place in the official senatorial tally with almost 11 million votes but has yet to be proclaimed.

Senator Daya

Trillanes keeps the fire burning

Senator-to-be Antonio Trillanes IV of the Genuine Opposition does not disappoint those who trace the mess that this country is in to the illegitimacy of the Arroyo presidency.

Foremost, he never refers to Arroyo as “president”. Just plain Gloria Arroyo.

In his interview last Monday with ABS-CBN’s Ces Drilon, the first after he was granted post-election media access, he said he would work for the impeachment of Gloria Arroyo.

CA junks Querubin’s plea to stop court martial

ariel.JPGThis one is not-so-good news. With this, Maria Flor Querubin said they would have to go to the Supreme Court and join Maj.Gen. Renato Miranda, Brig.Gen. Danny Lim and others to make the same plea. “I’m hopeful and praying that the Supreme Court justices will be fair and objective,” she said.

Malaya’s report:

THE Court of Appeals has denied the petition of detained Marine Col. Ariel Querubin to stop court martial proceedings against him and 29 other military officers who figured in the foiled coup attempt in February last year.

In an 18-page decision penned by Associate Justice Vicente Roxas, the CA Special 13th Division affirmed the authority of the general court martial to try erring soldiers and of AFP chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon’s to convene a pre-trial investigation panel.

Recto concedes; Comelec to proclaim 10 Wednesday

Re-electionist Sen. Ralph Recto on Monday followed in the footsteps of fellow Team Unity candidate Michael Defensor and acknowledged his defeat in the Senate race.

“For me, this is the time to accept the will of the people,” Recto said in a privilege speech during a Senate session Monday afternoon. Click here for the rest of the story.

Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos, meanwhile said, they will proclaim on Wednesday the top ten winners in the senatorial race. They are, Loren Legarda (GO), Francis Escudero (GO), Panfilo Lacson (GO), Manuel Villar (GO), Francis Pangilinan (IND), Benigno Aquino, Jr. (GO), Edgardo Angara (TU), Alan Peter Cayetano (GO), Joker Arroyo (TU), Gregorio Honasan (IND).

Pacquiao withdraws millions from banks

Business Mirror

A locally-based thrift bank and two branches of regular commercial banks based in Manila are having difficulties servicing their clients panicked by the sudden withdrawal of most of the deposits of boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

Informed sources said Pacquiao withdrew all his money from a bank in General Santos City as he conducted a personal audit and found he spent more than P140 million in election-related expenses but was still trounced by his diminutive political opponent.
