Captain? Lieutenant? Mister?

It must have been slip of the tongue when Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita told Malacañang reporters “We have been checking on the court” when asked for reaction to the order of Makati RTC Judge Elmo Alameda to grant bail to Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim and 16 officers and soldiers in connection with the Nov. 2007 incident at the Manila Peninsula.

Alameda said the evidence presented by the prosecution did not prove the charge of rebellion, which should have been non-bailable.

Alameda’s order supports common sense that what Trillanes, Lim and company did on Nov. 2007 did not constitute public uprising and taking up arms against the government which is the primary element of rebellion.

Lim, Trillanes to remain in jail despite bail—AFP

From GMA News TV:

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and senatorial aspirant former Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim will remain in jail despite being allowed by a Makati court to post bail on a rebellion charge, the military said on Wednesday.

“The group of Senator Trillanes cannot be released until after the military has agreed already, because they are still facing general court martial,” said Armed Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr.

He said the two have pending cases before the military tribunal in connection with alleged attempts to overthrow the Arroyo government.

“Under the military law, there is no such thing as bail,” Brawner said.

Only in the Philippines.”

Kaya nga nila pinayagan kumandidato kasi akala nila walang pagasang mananalo. Kasi nga naman, walang pera, nakakulong pa.

Let Trillanes fulfill his mandate

Senate Majority Floorleader Miguel Zubiri should not worry about the Philippines setting a precedent in allowing a detained senator to fulfill his duties to the people.

The Philippines has already set a precedent for having a president who has never been elected to that position by the people.

Zubiri, defending his sitting on a Senate resolution allowing detained Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to participate in the sessions and other legislative functions through remote or electronic Zubiri asked, “Is there a parliament anywhere around the world that allows legally detained members to participate in their sessions?”

The Inter-Parliamentary Union urged the Philippine Senate to act on the resolution allowing him to perform his dutiees as elected senator noting that his six-year detention, despite his not having been convicted of any crime, is a violation of his basic rights.

In its letter to majority floor leader Senator Miguel Zubiri to act on a 2008 Senate resolution allowing detained Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to participate in the sessions and other legislative functions through remote or electronic means.

They called on authorities to “ensure that the resolution is implemented without further delay.”

“The Philippines is a party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which enshrines fair trial guarantees and that, as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, it has pledged to uphold the highest standards of human rights,” said the IPU.

The Comelec gave accreditation as partylist to dubious groups represented by people close to Malacañang yet they denied the application of Samahang Magdalo based on their paranoia and misconception of the group.

In denying the group’s accreditation, Commissioner Nicodemo Ferrer said that “the principal founders of the Magdalo Para Sa Pagbabago Party remain unrepentant and that they still harbor the propensity to engage in another illegal adventure similar to the failed 2003 Oakwood Mutiny, should they again fail to achieve their goal — this time with the use of the political party that they are now applying for accreditation and which may very well be used by them to recruit and indoctrinate disciplined followers which may become their blind followers.”

The Magdalo group today assailed the denial of the application as party list as “unfair, defective, myopic and shortsighted”

Ang susuportahan ng Magdalo para presidente

Samahang Magdalo will support the presidential bid of Sen. Francis Escudero.

This was announced this morning by Magdalo Party Secretary General Francisco Ashley Acedillo after the first Magdalo national convention held at the UP hostel.

Rock the vote!

Reminder to first-time voters and those who will be transferring voting places: please don’t wait until Oct. 31, last day of registration.

The Commission on Elections said they will not be extending the deadline because they have to finalize the voters’ list. Remember that the 2010 elections will be the first supposedly nationwide automated elections.

The Smartmatic/TIM computers that Comelec will be using (Precinct Count Optical Scan or PCOS) are precinct-specific so it’s important that the voters list is finalized early.

After you have voted, pray that the PCOS that contains your name does not get misdelivered to a wrong precinct, just like what happened to many bunches of ballots and ballot boxes in the past elections.

The Samahang Magdalo, Taguig chapter, will stage “Rock the Vote” tomorrow Saturday, with a core message of encouraging first-time voters to register. “If we desire genuine changes and reforms from crooked governance, we must begin these steps at making sure we are legitimate voters before the Comelec,” said Lt. (s.g.) James Layug, head of the Samahang Magdalo in the city that organized the concert.
