Tour of hope

As you are reading this, a Filipina is dying of cervi-cal cancer. And what a waste because cervical cancer can be prevented.

Biking enthusiasts will go on a tour for a cause from Vigan to Subic from Sept. 13 to Sept. 17 to raise awareness and funds for the prevention and control of cervical cancer in the Philippines.

At the launching of “Tour of Hope” last week, Dr. Cecilia Llave, head of the Philippine General Hospital Cancer Institute, gave an overview of the cervical cancer situation in the Philippines.

She said every eight minutes a Filipina dies of cancer.

Sobra na sa 88 milyon ang mga Filipino ngayon.

Sa sensus ng National Staistics Office noong isang taon, umabot na sa 88.57 milyon ang ating populasyon. Ikumpara sa sensus nong 2000 na 76.50 milyon, tumaas tayo ng 2.04 percent. Ibig sabihin, nadagdagan tayo ng 12.07 million sa loob ng pitong taon.

Merong iba na natutuwa dahil ibig sabihin noon, mas maraming Filipino. Ngunit mas marami ang nababahala kasi, saan kukuha ng ipapakain para sa lahat na yun? Saan kukuha ng pagpa-aral sa lahat na yun?

Tinitingnan ko ang mga litrato ni dating Cory Aquino mula nang ibinalita na siya ay may kanser sa kolon at laki nga ang kanyang ipinayat.

Sa pahayag ng kanyang pamilya na binasa ni Kris, noon pang Enero nagsimula ang kanyang check-up. Ibig sabihin noon may alam na sila noong mga nakaraang buwan na kanser ang kanyang sakit.

Television personality Kris Aquino suffered a miscarriage Tuesday, a day after she broke the news that her mother former President Corazon Aquino is suffering from colon cancer.

Kris was on her eighth week of pregnancy.

Former president Corazon Aquino is suffering from colon cancer and is in a hospital, her family said Monday.

Aquino’s daughter Kris, a people television host and actress, read a statement on television saying the cancer was discovered when the former president went to have a check up.

Naintindihan ko ang posisyon ng Philippine Medical Association, ang organisasyon ng mga doctor sa Pilipinas, sa kanilang protesta sa probisyon sa House Bill 2844 , ang bersyon ng mababang kapulungan sa Cheaper Medicines bill kung saan hindi lamang na required ang mga doctor sulatin ang generic name ng gamot kung di pinagbabawal ang pagreseta ng mga doctor ng brand ng gamot.

Ang bersyon ng Senado na sinusulong ni Sen. Mar Roxas ay walang ganoong probisyon.

Sinusuportahan ng Head Alliance for Democracy and posisyon ng mga doctor.

Toxic

Pumasok na sa pang-araw-araw na pananalita ng Pinoy ang salitang “toxic” na ang ibig sabihin ay nakakasama sa kalusugan ng isang tao.

Kapag inis ka sa isang tao o sa particular na isyu, ang sasabihin mo ay, “Huwag na natin pag-usapan yan. Toxic.” Ganyan ang usapang JPEPA (Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement) na tinatalakay ng Senado para ratipikahan, kung akala nila makakabuti sa bayan o ibasura kung akala naman nila ay toxic.

Maraming isyu ang nasa JPEPA. May mga ibibigay tayo sa Japan kapalit ng kanilang ibibigay na pabor sa atin. Ang ilan sa mga pabor na dinadawit ng Japan sa atin ay makapasok raw ang marami nating produkto sa Japan na tax free. Kapag tax free kasi, mura kaya makakapag-compete sa ibang produkto doon.

Licking cervical cancer

At the launching last month of Cervarix, GlaxoSmithKline’s cervical cancer vaccine, one of the guest celebrities was singer Joey Albert.

Dr. Cecilia Llave, chairman of the UP-PGH Cancer Institute, introduced Joey as “not just a songbird but a phoenix.”

The legend of the phoenix is that it lived for five to six centuries in the Arabian desert, was consumed by fire by its own act, and then rose in youthful freshness from its own ashes.

Looking at Joey, vibrant and lovely after two bouts of cancer, the comparison to the legendary phoenix is most apt.

Don’t believe those TV ads about your child becoming an Einstein or a Mozart by drinking formula milk.

“They are false and malicious,” said Dr. Nicholas Alipui, country representative for the Philippines of the United Nations Children Fund (Unicef), adding that no artificial product could be better than mother’s milk.

Alipui, Health Secretary Francisco Duque and breast milk advocate Innes Fernandez were at the Bulong-Pulungan at Sofitel Philippine Plaza yesterday to help us unlearn the many falsehoods that we learned from too much TV watching.
