In a way, I’m glad that deviation from the original composition in the singing of the Philippine national anthem is causing controversy.
That means that people still care very much about our national anthem, which is one of our patriotic symbols.
The latest in the “Lupang Hinirang” controversy is the version of much- admired Arnel Pineda (of the international band “The Journey”) sang last Sunday at the Pacquiao-Clottey fight at the Dallas Cowboys stadium in Texas.
I only caught up with Arnel’s performance in Monday’s evening news reports (I don’t watch boxing fights) but here’s the comment of the musically-inclined journalist Inday Espina-Varona in her Facebook wall: “The first two notes of Arnel’s Lupang Hinirang had us betting he wouldn’t hit the high notes. He was fine with the first high notes, sang the anthem straight and pure, and then he had to do the runs… ayan, sablay.”
As in past Pacquiao boxing fights when the singers of “Lupang Hinirang” took artistic liberty of Julian Felipe’s composition, the National Historical Institute was displeased with Pineda’s rendition of the national anthem.
NHI is the government body tasked to promote Philippine history and cultural heritage by ensuring respect for the national anthem, Philippine flag and other national symbols.
NHI Heraldry Section Chief Teddy Atienza cited section 37 of Republic Act 8491 which states “ The rendition of the National Anthem, whether played or sung, shall be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe.”
Atienza said Felipe’s original musical arrangement has a marching tempo. Violators may be fined P5,000 to P20,000 or jailed for a year.
Of course, many came to the defense of Pineda. In my blog, a New York -based lawyer, SaxnViolins said, “ You may disagree with the interpretation, but the US upholds the freedom of speech of singers or other entertainers. Note the various interpretations, including Jimi Hendrix’s wailing guitar rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.
“A singer has to feel the music, whether a ballad or an anthem. And they sing it with that feeling. Of course, sabi ng iba, pasiklab lang daw. Seems to me it is the people who pedantically insist on the original version who are making pasiklab about their knowledge of the law, which if tested Constitutionally will fail (if the issue were presented to a fair tribunal), not a fawning one.”
SnV also cautions those who suggest Pineda should be jailed : “Oops, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Criminal law is territorial. So the crime should have been committed in the Philippines, for it to be punishable under Philippine law. Philippine law has no jurisdiction in foreign soil. Thank God.”
RA 8491 was the initiative of former President Ramos who found the so-called “modern” versions of Lupang Hinirang disrespectful. I remember one event where Ramos reprimanded organizers after the rock version of the national anthem was performed.
Section 38 of RA 8491 states that “ When the National Anthem is played at a public gathering, whether by a band or by singing or both, or reproduced by any means, the attending public shall sing the anthem. The singing must be done with fervor.
“As a sign of respect, all persons shall stand at attention and face the Philippine flag, if there is one displayed, and if there is none, they shall face the band or the conductor. At the first note, all persons shall execute a salute by placing their right palms over their left chests. Those in military, scouting, citizens military training and security guard uniforms shall give the salute prescribed by their regulations. The salute shall be completed upon the last note of the anthem.”
I have an anecdote related to this provision. A few years ago, there was an event organized by the National Commission on Culture and Arts. It’s executive director Cecile Guidote Alvarez (whose national artist award conferred by Gloria Arroyo was questioned by the artists community) has a theater group composed of handicapped children.
While “Lupang Hinirang” was being played, Alvarez had the children act out the national anthem. Many artists and historians in the audience were aghast. Ivan Anthony Henares, executive director and trustee of the Heritage Conservation Society, wrote NHI, then headed by historian Ambeth Ocampo , reporting the disrespect of the national anthem by the NCCA head, whose job is to promote Filipino culture and arts.
Henares said Alvarez violated the RA 8491.
I got a copy of Henares’ letter. Since I was going to write it about it in my column, I called up Alvarez to get her side. She happened to be in Germany and it must have been midnight there when I called up. She turned ballistic when I told her about Henares’ letter. “Nobody can accuse me of being unpatriotic. I fought Marcos!,” she said.
Her logic stunned me. Non sequitur.
The flag, the anthem, the motto and others patriotic symbols embody our ideals and aspirations as a nation. They are being preserved and promoted to deepen our national pride, which seem to be weak and wanting.
I look at the controversies on the singing of the national anthem as part of our continuing search for a national identity. Over a century and a decade as a nation, and we are still confused as to our national identity. Sad.
I didn’t know that fighting Marcos is a way of showing patriotism. Does this mean that fighting Gloria or Erap is being patriotic??? Geeezzz!!!
On Arnel Pineda’s singing… It would be quite an interesting story to follow especially when a case will be filed in court against Arnel Pineda and maybe Martin Nieviera too. Personally, I don’t give a hoot how a singer sings it as long as it is sung nicely and that lyrics are not altered, etc… but there is a law about how it should be sung. So, I guess we have to follow what is written in the law.

My comment: That’s ARnel Pineda, he needs also identity, like Pacman, by rendering our National Anthem or song, in his own innovation. Just by his own making, he became famous like
the Filipino Icon boxer, in matter of minutes ( while pacman did it in years through discipline and hard work ). Many were surprised of the change in the tone ( unpatriotic ), but he

Ang feeling ko pabayaan nila ang mga singers na i-express nila sa kanilang bersiyon, na naaayon sa hinihingi ng modernong panahon, sa isang damdaming pangkasalukuyan at hindi nung panahong inaapi tayo ng Kastila.
Iba ang spirit ng nasyunalismo ang hinihingi ng present times. Marahil kaya tayo hindi na makabayan ay dahil hindi na natin feel ang relevance ng laban nila Bonifacio at Rizal. Hindi kasi sila direktang nanalo. Yung una, pinatay pa ng sariling kababayan samantalang si Rizal ay itinumba ng kalaban ng walang kahirap-hirap. Ang mga Pinoy kasi ngayon, sumusunod sa isang hero – yung nananalo, yung nakukuha ang mithi. Gaya ni Pacquiao.
Kung pababayaan nating humanap ng mas “relevant” na interpretasyon ng Pambansang Awit, siguro ay mag-eevolve ito ng isang bersiyon na katanggap-tanggap sa lahat, sumasakop hindi lang sa isang rebolusyonaryong konsepto, kundi isang bersiyong naaayon sa panahong moderno, nababagay sa isang national identity na patuloy na hinahanap, patungo sa isang tunay mas makabayang “spirit”.
Hindi natin makakamit ang tunay na progreso kung ang isang mahalagang bahagi ng ating identity ay lugmok sa pinaglipasan at makaluma na pilit idinidikta sa atin na panatilihing naaayon sa orihinal na komposisyong ang tunay na damdamin ay limot na at ang titik ay sa wikang banyaga.
Ayon sa mga Kano, ang pinakapopular na version ng Star-Spangled Banner ay iyong kinanta ng Boyz II Men. Merong ballad at merong New Jack Swing ang tempo at R&B ang areglo ng a capella interpretation.

Nung 1969, sa Woodstock, tinugtog ni Jimi Hendrix ang Star-Spangled Banner sa kanyang puting Fender Strat (tinutugtog niya ang gitara ng pabaliktad dahil siya ay kaliwete) na ngayon ay naging isang simbolo na ng 60s era.
Sa kalagitnaan ng guitar solo ni Hendrix ay ginagaya niya ang tunog ng isang eroplanong nakikipag-dogfight, tunog ng machine guns at mga pagsabog. Ito ay repleksiyon ng kanyang experience bilang isang sundalo ng US Army Airborne Division.
Walang nagreklamo na ang ginawang iyon ni Hendrix, na talaga namang malayo sa orihinal na bersiyon ng US National Anthem, at bagkus ay hinirang na isa sa pinaka-maimpluwensiyang rendition ng Star Spangled Banner. Paboritong tugtugin ito maging ng mga sundalong Kano.

Sa tingin ko, hindi naman confused ang ating national identity. Pilipino tayo. Hindi komo nagbabago ang ekspresyon natin ng mga awit o sayaw noong nakaraan ay
confused tayo. Tulad ng ilog kailangan umagos tayo kung hindi babaho ang tubig. Walang masama sa ginawang interpretasyon ni AP sa pambansang awit, kung tutuusin tingnan mo ang tindi ng emosyon niya at yong nakapaligid sa kanya, patunay lamang na ang “fervor” ay hindi sa pag-awit ng ayon sa original kung hindi sa honesty ng interpretasyon.
Oh I love Arnel’s version of Lupang Hinirang. It’s perfect and I’m proud of it. His crispy , rich and husky voice made Lupang Hinirang rock the stadium.
Talking about Patriotism, In 2008, the Philippines was at the top 10th Most Patriotic country in the World at 9th place.
In 2006, The Philippines ranked 7th as the Most patriotic Country in the world and the ONLY Asian country in the top 10.
i for one do not find anything offensive about Arnel Pineda’s singing of the Philippine National Anthem. I think Leah Salonga would have belted it the same way. I had never seen any pacquaio fights…sorry if i might sound “unpatriotic” hahaha! i wish the Filipinos would find another icon to unite under. Just a very personal opinion.
My suggestion would be for the NHI to just provide an official recording the national anthem and have them play it during these momentous events. Finish palabra.

In fact, I cringed when he belted out the final line.
In the international arena, we have to be represented by an internationally known filipino talent baka magmukhang baduy tayo.. wag na man. Next maybe, will be Leah or Charice. Let’s showcase our talents to the world. Let our singers sing Lupang Hinirang at their own taste acceptable to the all the people in the world. Medyo backward na ang punto nang Lupang hinirang unless I am watching a love story broadway show. This is boxing, it should not sound very sad and deep. Arnel rock it and made me drunk during the fight… LOL

On Philippines National Identity, there are the most widely-recognized attributes of the filipinos at the international level, namely:
1. Strong will to succeed – Generally able to rise up to the occasion when given responsibilities.
2. English Language Facility . Better English communication skills in comparison to many other nationalities in same category.
3. Family Oriented . Considers work as sacrifices he does to offer a better life to the family.
4. Good Work Ethics . Possesses an inherent capacity for hard work, diligent and well-disciplined.
5. Good team player . Is generally friendly and has a positive outlook in his relationship with other people and co-workers
6. Innovative Worker . Many possess diverse skills and are easily trainable. Ha penchant for finding solutions to problems and challenges.
7. People-Oriented. Can easily adjust to foreign culture and work environment. Has a sound temperament and can cope with the demands and pressure of his work.
8. Warm and Caring. Excel and is recognized worldwide for professions and competencies that require people oriented service and care.
In my view, our identity being filipinos has been taken for granted. Mainly because of poor governance to the overwhelming talents and natural resources the country has. The system is not working for us.
Let’s vote for the right person. Go GIBO go.. 😀 hehe
Now if filipinos here at home cannot identify those positive traits for some sad reasons, then we have to help empower them… 😀

Enumeration not bad (not necessarily the definition one expects)… but don’t these attributes apply to other nations as well? In other words, they’re pretty generic, i.e., they are attributes that one could commend the Indians, the Chinese, etc., for. They don’t necessarily define national identity.
By the way, just a remark: I feel “4. Good Work Ethics . Possesses an inherent capacity for hard work, diligent and well-disciplined.” is debatable.
Of course, it’s difficult to generalise but “possessing inherent capacity for hard work” may be true in many but not always. I find that Filipinos, or many of those I know here, will drop a job when they think it’s too difficult (hence, the “diligence” attribute is questionable) and often too, what is damning is unreliability.
However, on the whole, I acdept that those who have left the country may have been imbibed with this set of nice attributes.

Arnel Pineda didn’t think twice about apologizing because he was already expecting people to complain.
The Filipino lead vocalist of the rock band Journey, who has come under fire for incorrectly singing the national anthem at the Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey fight on March 14, said he knew he would be criticized for his version.
Pineda sang the last bars in “Lupang Hinirang” on a higher note because “it felt right for the occasion,” he said.
“‘Lupang Hinirang’ is a very emotional song. I really felt that what I did was appropriate at that moment,” Pineda told the Inquirer in a phone interview Tuesday.
Through the media, he extended his apology to the National Historical Institute for his “dissatisfactory performance.”
The 42-year-old native of Sampaloc, Manila, arrived in Manila Tuesday.
Other singers rapped over singing the incorrect version included: Jennifer Bautista, Sarah Geronimo, Geneva Cruz and Martin Nievera.
“I’m not offended by the criticism. I knew it was coming. As an artist, I took liberties,” he said.
According to the NHI, the law (Section 37 of Republic Act No. 8491) states that “Lupang Hinirang” should be played or sung “in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe.”
Pineda said at first he was hesitant about saying yes when Pacquiao asked him to sing the national anthem.
“Manny called from Los Angeles while he was still training for the fight,” he recounted. “I told him I was a bit embarrassed since I knew there were others on his list who also wanted to sing.”
Asked what he did to prepare for singing the national anthem, Pineda said he thought about the meaning of the lyrics. “I made sure I would pronounce them clearly … so the audience would feel the anthem’s sentiment.”
He decided to sing a cappella because there was no time to prepare a minus-one version. He had also requested for an ear monitor from the stadium officials but was not provided one.
Pineda admitted going off-key during the anthem’s climactic part because he couldn’t hear himself sing as he was surrounded by cheering crowds at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

anna, yes they are debatable but I am the type person that always stick to what is positive. Why debate if it generally applicable or common among pinoys. I think those attributes apply to the entirety of this country. wala lang, positive lang talaga ako for now.. 😀

Pineda should known better that it is not about what he feel right, it is about how to it right. I really like my country I love everything in it including the national idiom which is the language of manila and the other dialects/idioms we have(naalala ko yung dalawang tao talking two different languages one speaking in the language of manila one speaking in the language of cebu), our cuisine and our literature I really feel pitty of our country being the tuta and the bitch of the european and american powers and when tountry is being torn by the ‘nagmamarunong’ people.
The NHI then should insist to preview the singer’s performance for which he would be issued a license; how’s that?
The law is as antiquated as its proponents. It belongs to an era when to be a great musician was to be “plakado” down to the last note. Lumang style na yan. Ang Pinoy music nga nagsimula lang umusbong noong tinigilan na yung pangongopyang ganyan. Kahit kantang Bahay Kubo, magiging pang-cultural show na lang na panonoorin at pakikinggan lamang ng mga sampung tao tuwing Linggo ng Wika kung walang sumusubok na gawan yan ng rap o rock version o any version na nakaka-relate sa mga kabataan. Merong hit version sa Youtube ng composition ni Johann Pachebel isang 15th century composer na ang title ay Canon. Tinugtog ng Koreanong teenager guitar wiz na “Funtwo’, ginawang rock. Tignan mo ang mga Team Pacquiao-branded t-shirt, jacket, sumbrero, shorts, kung anik-anik pa, wala na sa porma ang banderang Pinas, kadalasan kulang yung sinag ng araw.
Bakit hindi nila ipakulong si Pacquiao gayong merong batas. Bakit yung kumakanta lang.

Walang kasalanan si Manny dito. Gusto niyang kumanta si Arnel sa kanyang laban pero hindi na sinabi na baguhin mo ito. Kagustuhan lang lahat ‘yon ni Arnel at alam na niya na may napuna na noon dahil sa maling pagkanta pero ginawa pa rin niya.
