Commenting on the arrest of former Sen. Gregorio Honasan, Gloria Arroyo, through her spokesman Ignacio Bunye, said “No one can make a mockery of the law… and get away with it.”
She should tell that to herself. She has been making a mockery of the law, beginning with her power grab in February 2001, to her cheating in the 2004 elections, to her EO 464 destroying the government’s check and balance mechanism; to her Calibrated Pre-emptive Response, to her Proclamation 1017 which was martial law in disguise. We are just mentioning a few because the list is long.
She also said Honasan’s arrest “brings to a close a broad conspiracy to destabilize the government and is a harbinger of growing political stability underlying steady economic growth.”
She is dreaming. She should have been there at Department of Justice during the preliminary investigation of 49 persons charged with rebellion last Monday.
In our conversation of some of the officers there, we sensed that months of detention have not extinguished the fire of idealism in them. None of them regretted having done what they did, which was to manifest their abhorrence to being used as cheating operators in an election as what happened in the 2004 election.
The gathering of those honorable men in one room was an inspiring sight. It was a reminder that there is no dearth of people who are willing to sacrifice for truth and justice in this country.

Not all of the 49 were present last Monday but with so many lawyers and reporters in one room, State Prosecutor Dina Perez had a hard time maintaining order.
It was not without light moments. There was laughter when the name Prudencio “Dodong” Nemenzo was called and former UP President Francisco “Dodong” Nemenzo stood up to denounce the “sloppy job” of those who are charging him with the crime rebellion.(Click here for his full statement.)
“They did such a sloppy job that they could not even get my name right. In the subpoena I am listed as ‘Prudencio Dodong Nemenzo.’ Everyone in UP knows my real name. A call to Diliman or a visit to UP Manila (the NBI’s next door neighbor) would have spared them from this embarrassing error,” Nemenzo said.
The government lawyers were at a loss to respond to Nemenzo’s complaint about his name. One of them asked me, “What’s his correct name?” I told him “Francisco Nemenzo.”
I added, “You merged UP and PUP.” His facial expression showed that he didn’t get it. So I explained, “The former president of PUP (Polytechnic University of the Philippines) is Nemesio Prudente. He (as I pointed to Nemenzo) is Francisco Nemenzo, former president of UP, University of the Philippines.”
That’s when he understood their mistake. He tried to justify it by explaining to me, “We just take down the narration of the witness. That was probably the name that he mentioned so that was the one printed in the complaint. Like, if somebody identifies you as Nora Aunor…”
Immediately I reacted, “I don’t like Nora Aunor. But I would not mind being mistaken as Angelina Jolie.”
It was a fun morning.
What kind of justice do they have in the Philippines, Ellen? I’ll get raise brows if I tell this story to a group of judges in Japan.
Over here, it will be dismissed by the court. Any such charge with a different name will immediately dismissed and considered a closed case when such error is committed by a prosecutor in Japan indicting someone he cannot even get the name right! What a crap!
Glad I am no Professor Nemenzo, and I am Japanese!!! I doubt if I need to worry going through such apparent case of injustice in Japan. Thank God!

The Bansot knows for a fact the growing dissent among these men of honor, Ellen, and reason for the recruitment being announced at all the barangay for new volunteers—pang tapal sa mga kanyon na gagamitin nila sa mga rebels kung sakali! I’m told of the 300,000 stronghold being planned out by the Bansot and Company, including the extra battalion for their own personal safety according to my source. This should be examined and investigated as a matter of fact in fairness to those who have been in the service and are in for a chopping before their retirement age so they cannot get any pension.
Point is when are these decent and gallant men of honor going to toe the line?

Me too I believe that there are more honest men than corrupt in the service. The problem is how can you separate the good ones from the bad ones? I salute you for the statements you made through Ellen. I hope you are able to read the reactions of people here, and how they appreciate people like you who want to speak out for the truth. My only HOPE is this: the many good men (and women) in the AFP should do something to make a difference, and the time is NOW. As the saying goes, evil triumphs if the few bad guys continue doing what they want to do, while the majority do nothing to stop them. Surely, we don’t want to see the day when the AFP, as an institution, is fully wrecked by those who are obssessed and devoured by power.

It is very difficult not to include the institution leaders and many members of an institution are seen to have failed and are failing the high expectations of the Republic and the people they serve.
For the institution to be spared in the people’s attack on Gloria and her government, the good members of that institution should accept that for so long a time now, that institution has not performed its duty wholly in keeping with traditions.
If civilians – who have real cause or reasons to resent the damage that members, leaders of the same institution have inflicted on their own institution – do not speak up, you the younger members of that institution will eventually pay for its wanton, senseless moral destruction.
While I understand how you feel, you must also accept that the institution that you speak of belongs to the people, it belongs to the Republic and the citizens of this nation have as much right as any of the uniformed members of the institution to hold that very institution accountable.

I mentioned to my friends who were visiting yesterday that I was planning to go to Manila this Christmas, I was advised by one of them (a member of the embassy here) not to use the name that is known to the embassy here because I might be put “in a spot” at the immigrations counter. (I’ve already told you in my earlier blog that they know my real family name.) He was not trying to unduly alarm me but he said that my name is already in Manila and I’m considered, well, a “destabilizer.”
Unfortunately, the name they know is the one I have in my passport and can’t change it because it IS my legal name.

Cruz denies Cabinet wrangling
The former chief of the Department of National Defense denied Friday that Cabinet wrangling had anything to do with his resignation early this month, ABS-CBN reported.
Cruz, who attended the UP College of Law Grand Alumni Homecoming at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel, said he was in the process of completing a report on his unfinished projects.
“We’re completing our report, so there will be a guide for whoever takes over the department and the transition,” he said.
Cruz also denied having any disagreement with President Arroyo.
Speculations have been brewing since Cruz resigned from office. One of these pointed to the alleged pressure by other cabinet secretaries, blaming Cruz for his failure to convince his former law firm partner, Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, to support the petition for Charter change.
Reports said that Cruz, who served as a public official for six years, is planning to take a vacation to think about what to do with his life. “I will rest for a while,” said Cruz.
Earlier, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez speculated that Cruz’s sudden resignation “showed that he might be harboring some ill will towards somebody.”
“But I think that if he had any grudges, for example, against some Cabinet members, he shouldn’t take that against the president because all the Cabinet members are loyal to the president,” he told DZMM.
Gonzalez said Cruz’s departure was a loss to the government. “I see him as a good manager. In the years of his service as Secretary of Defense, it looks like there is a positive outlook about the reforms he implemented for the Armed Forces, especially the modernization program,” he said.
He denied lobbying for Cruz’s removal, adding that Cruz might have resigned after the Supreme Court
Cruz earlier said three Cabinet secretaries were pushing for his removal after the Supreme Court junked a Malacañan-backed petition to change the Charter. He said the secretaries blamed him for failing to convince his former law firm partner, Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, to support the petition.

My comment:
Inquirer is being very diplomatic and quite subdued when its editor says that Mike has been flexing his muscles lately… First of all, Mike is a slob of the worst variety who looks like he can barely carry his 250 pounds of pure pig fat and a man with that kind of fat content, in reality cannot “flex muscles.”
In ordinary, normal times, Inquirer’s term for Mike Fatso’s flexing his muscles is a polite way of pointing out the obvious but in today’s scheme of things, Mike is pushing his fat around would be the more appropirate term.
Secondly, to say that his lawyers are busy filing xxx number of cases is forcing a reader to push his/her imagination. What could they mean by “busy”? Busy should an adjective best suited to those poor people, thousand and thousands from among the incredibly impoverished 26 million Filipinos who are busy, very busy, digging up rubbish dumps to find something to eat while these lawyers, trollops of the worst category mill around their fat greasy king squatting in Malacanang.
Lastly, while I find that the Inquirer is proving itself combative, I would be very happy if the Inquirer could up the ante and allow its readers to read a commentary, an editorial prose worthy of a heavy, fat, dirty pig, more accurate, even picturesque when it comes to describing the pigs in the political pig pen and the transactional whorehouse we all call Malacanang.
Most obvious point to be made. It’s safe to assume that the wrong people are being arrested, detained and jailed. Those lunatics who should be prosecuted, arrested and jailed and perhaps shot in Luneta are instead running the country. Such a perfect system designed for crooks, corrupt and illegitimate bunch of liars and thieves. Obviously the institution is tilted to favor the existing illegitimate evil regime and there is not much anyone can do but watch the Philippines being destroyed, slowly but surely.

Bush, SKorea, Japan discuss N. Korea
HANOI – US President George W. Bush has launched a series of meetings with Asian leaders aimed at keeping pressure on North Korea over its nuclear weapons programs.
Bush, here for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum summit, met with South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun and was to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe before holding rare three-way talks.
It was to be the US president’s first face-to-face exchange with Abe since the Japanese prime minister took office in late September.
The meetings came as US officials privately expressed concerns that South Korea was not doing enough to enforce UN sanctions imposed on North Korea following its October 9 nuclear test.
“I’ll, of course, talk to the South Korean president about implementing the United Nations Security Council resolution,” Bush told reporters Friday after meeting with Australian Prime Minister John Howard.
“We have a chance to solve this issue peacefully and diplomatically. It’s important for the world to see that the Security Council resolutions which were passed are implemented,” he said.
Bush wants to ensure that the United States and its partners in six-party talks on North Korea — China, Japan, Russia and South Korea — are on the same page when the stalled negotiations resume, probably next month.
On Sunday, Bush was to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as US diplomats attempted to forge a consensus on an APEC statement on North Korea.
One senior US official said Friday that Washington might simply seek to recycle the wording of a UN Security Council resolution condemning Pyongyang’s nuclear test last month. AFP

I’m not ready to condemn San Juan and Bumidang. I can imagine the torture that they went through.
I’m hard on men in military uniform but like Ellen, I don’t believe we should condemn San Juan right away.
Two things come to mind if we decide not to condemn him right away:
1. could be a ploy to play in the hands of the military but there could be a “noble” intention behind San Juan’s turnaround
2. could be that he was tortured – even the most gallant and bravest of men will give in
I’ve met some men in uniform in the AFP who are avowed torturers (what Geneva convention?) and it is very likely that they are capable of doing the same on their very own.
Besides, there could be some truth that San Juan is a “leftist” (however, no military man has the right, moral and legal to inflict torture on anyone.)

Briefly, this is how the problem appears to me. First the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) of the 70’s, 80’s until Ramos coopted it in 1996. Then, its rival faction (Moro Islamic Liberation Front or MILF) started making more noise from that time on to the present. Together, RP and MILF have been talking about peace for ten years. This is what Arroyo calls the “peace process,” which is a continuing effort that began during Marcos time, I believe, in 1975.
Meanwhile, the Abu Sayyaf group (ASG) has gone on a rampage in 1995 until now. A small ragtag of young extremists (maybe not exceeding 200), the ASG is what RP is now after, even asking Uncle Sam to do the chasing and capturing. This is part of Arroyo’s share of the “global war on terror.” Remember, she once said in public: “Isang bala lang kayo!”
“Next theater?” “Global crusade?”
Only a careless Islamophobic could say that. “Crusade” is a most objectionable word that should now be relegated to the dustbin of history. If it carries over to our time, it’s because some leaders don’t learn, or stick to their old biases against Muslims.
Even George W. Bush was almost caught off guard, when he mentioned the word “crusade” as he dragged the whole world after Osama Bin Laden’s neck after the 9/11. Good he realized it, and retracted it by saying, he meant “war.”
To refresh our memory, the crusade was first launched in 1095 by Pope Urban II (a Frenchman) to drive out the Muslims from Jerusalem, the Christians’ Holy Land. It continued in varying efforts through the century – seven crusades altogether – before it ended as a failure in 1270 when its last advocate, also a Frenchman, King Louis IX, died without attaining his mission.

Japan was her first foreign assignment. She was here as a Vice-Consul some 25 or 30 years ago. Pretty hard working, and well deserving of her position, I guess. It is just too bad when people think she is in league with the incompetent and the bogus because she is in fact a very competent public servant who will serve whoever is at Malacanang regardless of where her real loyalty is. As they say, “Bayan muna!”
She is in fact two or three years my senior at UP. Matalino and very efficient. She had a good reputation as a diplomat when she was here. Way to go Linda! I don’t know about the husband who is also in the service.
The last time I met Linda Basilio in a diplomatic reception, I sensed she was wary of me. Maybe because I had criticized her husband, who violated DFA rules by having himself posted to Bangladesh a few months before his retirement when DFA rules and regulation specifically state that one should not be posted abroad two years before his or her retirement. As expected, he was extended. His case was mentioned in my article “Age-rule violations have foreign service going gray.”

National Security Council official David McCormick said Bush and Hu reached “an agreement on direction and next steps” on North Korea in a lengthy and specific discussion.
McCormick refused to characterize what the two leaders decided must happen next, saying only: “Both leaders are in a very similar position in terms of their views on this issue and next steps.”

Stephen Hadley has said the North Koreans “cannot come back just to talk,” but must take concrete steps to implement a year-old agreement to abandon its nuclear program.
In a pitch for U.S. manufacturers and farmers, Bush told his Chinese counterpart: “I strongly support your vision, Mr. President, of encouraging your country to become a nation of consumers and not savers.”
This gentle nudge represented a change from past meetings, where last year’s record and rising $202 billion trade deficit between the two countries — and complaints over lax Chinese enforcement of intellectual property rights — have produced more acrimonious exchanges.
The landscape is different now.
China has shown some support for enforcing U.N. sanctions enacted against North Korea after it tested a nuclear bomb last month, and was instrumental in persuading Pyongyang to agree to return to stalled six-party nuclear negotiations, perhaps by next month.
And in general, the administration has evolved from trying to arm-twist China on its economic policies to a less confrontational approach.
Among the perennial U.S. demands on China, most aimed at addressing the trade deficit: adopt a more flexible currency and promote more growth to encourage Chinese families to reduce extremely high savings rates and spend more.
“Obviously, with as much commerce between our countries as there is, there’s going to be trade difficulties,” Bush said. “But nevertheless, we both adopt a spirit of mutual respect and the desire to work through our problems.”
The Chinese leader declared that trade was “expanding very rapidly” and offered Bush what he said was “a piece of good news to share.” This turned out to be a recitation of four-month-old U.S. statistics the president had no doubt already heard, showing a 35 percent jump in exports to China in 2006, through July.
Bush met later with Russian President
Vladimir Putin — their second gathering in a week. The two had a social visit at a Moscow airport as Bush flew to Asia.
The Sunday meeting followed the two countries’ top trade officials signing of an agreement on Moscow’s ascension into the WTO. Bush called it “good for the United States and good for Russia.”
Russia has been the largest economy outside the 149-member WTO, which sets rules for global trade.
The deal took 12 years, after delays that had become a sore point on Moscow’s side in the sometimes-frosty U.S.-Russian relationship. The Bush administration, meanwhile, has been critical of democratic erosions under Putin’s leadership.
Also on Bush and Putin’s agenda were the nuclear standoffs with North Korea and
Iran.
Russia is a party with the United States and China to the nuclear talks with Pyongyang. Bush also met here Saturday with the leaders of the other participants,
South Korea and Japan.
Much to the United States’ delight, Russia voted for U.S.-backed
United Nations sanctions on the nuclear test. Now Washington is seeking to overcome Russian reluctance toward an upcoming vote on U.N. sanctions against Iran over its disputed nuclear program.
The threat from North Korea rated a statement by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum — but one that was only read out loud, falling short of what the United States sought. McCormick said the statement, read by Vietnamese President Nguyen Minh Triet at the end of the closed-door summit, said North Korea must return to talks and stop developing nuclear weapons, while urging nations to enforce sanctions against Pyongyang.
“The statement was very firm,” McCormick said. “What was important was that the members of
APEC came together on a common statement.”
The White House also pronounced APEC language on trade a victory. The leaders declared fresh resolve to revive stalled talks on a global free-trade accord and agreed to look into a region-wide free trade zone, a priority of Bush’s that has received little enthusiasm.
A White House statement on the summit said leaders “responded with characteristic courage” to Bush’s call for a Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific.

This reminds me of a story I’ve heard of this Bansot. Someone close to the family has told me of a trip they made to the US with the other children of Dadong.
