Tour of Hope vs cervical cancer

tour-of-hope

If you have a chance to attend some of the lectures on cervical cancer in the 2009 Tour of Hope, don’t miss it. It might save your life and your loved ones.

The 2009 Tour of Hope kicks off on May 24 at 6:00 in the morning at the Muntinlupa City Hall.

Here’s the schedule of the lectures:

May 24, 2009 Tagaytay City
May 25, 2009 Lipa, Batangas
May 26, 2009 Lucena, Quezon
May 27, 2009 Daet, Camarines Norte
May 28, 2009 Pili, Camarines Sur

The five-day cycling event is an information drive about cervical cancer which has been found to be preventable because it is caused by a virus..

Cervical cancer is caused by a persistent infection with cancer-causing Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). However, a simple infection may take 10 to 30 years to progress to cancer, which gives woman ample time to visit her doctor to learn preventive ways to combat this killer disease.

Every two minutes, one woman dies of cervical cancer around the world. In the Philippines, 10 women die everyday of this disease

The Tour of Hope (TTOH) is an international non-profit initiative, made up of like-minded individuals who regularly set up biking tours as a charity project to help in fund raising efforts and awareness campaigns for cervical cancer prevention programs.

Participating groups include Bravehearts, Campaigns-PR, GlaxoSmithKline, Team David’s Salon and the Cancer Institute Foundation, Inc (CIF).

CIF which is a non-stock, non-profit organization whose aim is to support the Cancer Institute of the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH) and its network alliances has been chosen as the major benefactor for the Tour of Hope-Philippines. The Cervical Cancer Prevention (CECAP) Network Program is one of its many major programs, which collaborates with numerous health organizations, both in the government and private sectors such as the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS) and other concerned local and international groups all working to eradicate cervical cancer in the country.

On its second year as a campaign against cervical cancer, the theme for this year’s Tour of Hope is “XXX-Dare to be Bold”. Covering 500 kilometers, it will traverse Southern Luzon from Muntinlupa City all the way to Camarines Sur.

The closing ceremonies for the Tour will be held in CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC), in Pili, Camarines Sur.

  3. patria adorada patria adorada

ang alam ko dito, pag ang babae is sexually active at an early age,say twelve or thirteen malaki ang chance ng babae na magka cervical cancer.however, mayroon ng injection para dito.

Jake Las Pinas- Cervical Cancer vaccines already offered to Girls at specific grade and ages at all Schools free of charge in Ontario, but the Catholic Schools (publicly funded) as its principles dictate refuse to participate . still parents can bring their daughters to their Primary Care Providers to get the vaccines. It is voluntary, but the drive is getting favourable response from the Public..those who may not qualify for the Free Vaccines (age specific) can get it covered by their parents extended care insurance at work. and those who are in social assitance are covered by the government drug plans anyways.

the vaccines is offered to girls at adolescence, since that’s the time they will be aware and conscious of their sexuality. and it should be accompanied by agressive Educational Campaign, not only in School but also at HOME.

Magpabakuna na at sundan si Ellen sa kanyang information education tungkol sa Cervical cancer….there is always HOPE.

Nice job…saludo ako sa pamunuan ng The Tour of Hope sapagka’t ang inyong magandang layunin to educate our Kababayang Pinay e isang blessing.

  8. One day, cancer shall be the thing of the past. Research is ongoing to cure this illness that kills thousands of people each day. TB used to be an incurable disease but it’s now curable. However, when the day comes that cancer could be cured, there will be another incurable disease that hits mankind. Man will die no matter what.

  9. Ellen,

This awareness tour is an excellent idea. What bothers me is the tangible means, i.e., vaccine, treatment, etc., to help prevent the disease.

The cost of the vaccine in the Philippines, I believe, is prohibitive so how can young women (or their families) afford to pay for the cost?

Well to do folks can afford the vaccine for their daughters, sisters or whoever but what about the majority of the poor young womenfolk?

  10. Yes, the vaccine is expensive. The PGH Cancer Institute advocates preventive approach. If the virus is detected early, there is a good chance that it can be isolated and dealt with successfully. Incubation period for the cervical-cancer causing virus is about 10 years.

The PGH Cancer Institute has this very inexpensive method of detecting the virus using the regular vinegar.

  11. “using the regular vinegar.”

Really? How so clever! Am not surprised… there are many natural and chemical treatments for various ailments that are actually within our reach.

  12. chi chi

Vinegar…not surprised at all, bacteria killer kasi yan.

  13. Chi,

Totoo yan. I use vinegar to clean almost everything in the kitchen and the bathroom including soaking the salad in vinegared water for a while. Cheap to boot!

I have stocks of bottles of vinegar in the garage for cleaning purposes… hehe!

  14. Doctors also prescribe ordinary table vinegar as antiseptic and may be used for douching.

  15. chi chi

    Anna,

Same here, in the kitchen and bathrooms meron bote ng vinegar.

I also use (distilled) white vinegar mix in warm water in rinsing my face after foaming (it tones facial skin).

‘nyway, I learned that from a grand aunt (a natural healer) who preached the use of vinegar for douching to avoid illness of the interior daw.

  16. The program of PGH Cancer Institute detecting presence of Human Papilloma Virus using vinegar is being supported by the John Hopkins Hospital.

About two or three years ago, John Hopkins gave grant to PGH Cancer Institute to train health workers to detect HPV with the use of vinegar. It’s much more in-expensive than pap smear.

  17. amazona amazona

Di daw puede yong Datu Puti, o sukang iloko at iba pa.
