Don’t buy these milk products

BFAD net yields a mixed catch
by Gerard Naval
Malaya

The Bureau of Food Drugs yesterday released a partial list of products that it said it was testing for possible melamine contamination.

BFAD said although these products did not originate from China, their manufacturers might have sourced raw materials from China.

The list of 54 products includes some of the more popular brands such as Snickers, Anlene, Nestlé, M&M and Anchor.

Nestlé, a Swiss company, said in a statement its raw materials are sourced from Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Anchor is a trademark of the New Zealand Dairy Board and all products bearing that name are sourced exclusively from that country.

BFAD said the public should refrain from consuming these products until tests show they are safe for consumption.

“This is just a partial list. These are the products we are testing,” said Vriginina Francia Laboy, officer in charge of BFAD’s Policy, Planning and Advocacy.

BFAD did not say when it would release the complete list.

The products are Anchor Lite Milk, Anchor Wam Frootmilk Drink Mango Magic, Anchor Wam Frootmilk Orange Chill, Anchor Wam Frootmilk Strawberry Spin;

Anlene Milk, Anmum Materna 180g, Anmum Materna Chocolate, Dutch Lady Pure Milk, Farmland Skim Milk, Greenfood Yili Pure Milk, Jinwei Drink, Jollycow Pure Fresh Milk, Jollycow Slender Low Fat Milk;

Non Fat Milk Powder (1.6 kg), Nestlé Chocolate Flavor Ice Cream Cone;

Early this week, BFAD imposed a temporary ban on all milk products from China. The ban will be in effect until the agency completes laboratory tests to determine the presence of melamine in the dairy products.

It has also revoked the licenses of importers of China-made milk products.

BFAD is conducting inspections in various stores, markets and groceries to see if there are banned milk products that are still made available to consumers.

The agency is also conducting random testing on all China-made milk products and milk by-products, such as milk chocolates, butter, yogurt and cheese, among others.

Health officials belied reports of a child suffering from kidney stones because of melamine-contaminated milk.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque, National Epidemiology Center chief Dr. Eric Tayag, and National Center for Disease Prevention and Control director Dr. Yolanda Oliveros said there was no such case.

In China, four people have already died while almost 53,000 infants have fallen ill, mostly growing kidney stones, from taking contaminated milk.

Tayag said it would take months for children taking the contaminated to develop kidney stones.

The Federation of Philippine Industries has urged BFAD to also inspect flour imported from China.

FPI president Jesus L. Arranza said since melamine is used to bring up the protein reading of food products, it is not far-fetched that flour coming from China could also be contaminated with melamine.

Arranza said he is basing his concern on the widespread pet poisoning in the United States last year when gluten flour used in the production of pet foods was also found to be contaminated with melamine. – With Irma Isip

The reality is…can the poorest of the poor be convinced not to try Chinese milk products? Between nothing to eat and toxic milk and other food items, I think the poor would take the chance on the latter. The reason is simply for survival. If you don’t eat and have nothing to eat, you die. If you have something to eat, there’s still a chance to live.

I’m sure the middle class and those who have more in life could buy non-Chinese made products because they can afford the more expensive ones from the US and Australia. But the poor cannot afford it. That’s my take on this so called toxic milk products.

Re: BFAD imposed a temporary ban on all milk products from China

How about smuggled milk products from China? Probably million tons of contaminated milk (smuggled) is already consumed by the public. The inept Arroyo government is not doing enough on food safety. Wala kasing malaking tongpats dito.

Food safety issue: Pagpag for sale, dahil sa kahirapan or simply for survival.

Try stopping those hungry Africans who are dying everyday from drinking Chinese milk products. They don’t care. It’s better to drink anything than dying. I’m very much against toxic food products. China for her phenomenon economic growth has been producing bad products lately, from toys to foods. However, does it ever occur to you that this might be another ploy and anti-China activities being orchestrated by the West?

Or a sinister plan (toxic food products) for population control in China???

  7. bitchevil bitchevil

The problem is not banning Chinese milk products only, but some want to ban most of Chinese made products. How could this be possible when Chinese products are available all over the world?

  8. China depends on exports, and the Philippines is China’s chief export customer. Exports are key to China’s entire modernization strategy. Its lethal products are killing our kababayan. It puzzle me why the BFAD chief is now quick to react and advised the public not to buy and consume the banned Chinese food products. She also called on the importers, distributors and other establishments selling the products to withdraw them from the market until evidence would prove that these products were fit for human consumption. Why now? Too much damaged have been done. That Chinese products should be banned in entering our country in the first place. It is not only risky but it kills our food manufacturer’s businesses like Rufina and Mama Sita. Anyway people in the government only noticed an uncover manhole when someone fell on it.That’s how government work. They blame the floods!

  9. Oh yeah, our legislatures passed a cheap medicine bills.Where do these cheap medicine come from? From China. Buying Chinese cheap medicine are problematic because cheap products can be quite expensive –and deadly.

Chinese-manufactured ingredients killed and sickened several thousand people when a Chinese exporter bulked food ingredient shipments by adding melamine. Tainted Chinese-made toothpaste turned up in bangketa sa bilao na inaagaw ng MMDA. A Chinese-made tires is also being sold to motorist that put their lives in danger although it’s mandatory to wear set belt, it blow-up at any given speed and time, then blame the driver for being reckless. How all these defective products passed custom inspections? It’s not a mystery anymore because an immigration clerk can issue a Filipino passport to Koreans, Hapones and Indians they become Filipino Citizen upon arrival at our International airport…Simon and Gurfungkel are amateur.

  10. bitchevil bitchevil

Cheap medicines don’t necessarily come from China. It’s mostly from India. So, I’m sorry to say you’re out of order, Cocoy. We can say all what we want about Chinese products…how bad and toxic they are; but what do we do? Throw them all away? If we do that, all the supermarkets and groceries would be half-empty. I’m talking not only about in the Philippines, but in many other countries. My position is, ban those proven to be toxic and keep those who are not. So far, what has been proven are the milk products. There are still a lot more Chinese food products that are okay.

  11. chi chi

It’s now reported that even noodles and soya are being looked into for contamination. Hope not because noodles is the poor’s staple food under Gloria’s fake administration.

  12. rose rose

na hospital daw si Dureza..at sumakit ang tiyan…seguro pumunta sa Chinatown..at doon kumain at uminom ng gatas..nakakatakot nga bumili ng Made in China..

  13. Banning toxic food from China, BE, is not anti-China orchestrated by the west. Talagang may diperensiya.

Truth is we have long found out that a lot many Chinese products are defective even when they carried Japanese names as those products of Japan now being manufactured in China supposedly with Japanese specifications.

A lot many people here in fact have stopped buying Chinese products especially food due to the toxic substances in them. ako nga hindi bumibili ng woodcraft for instance from China. May insect sa loob ng kahoy and they propagate and be health hazards.

Many years back, naging issue iyong baboy from China. Maraming bulate, pati na iyong mga gulay imported from China. Now, meat from China is totally banned. Even those processed meat as the sweet pork that I actually love to eat is banned.

I bought some sweet meat at the Hong Kong airport during my recent visit there. I forgot about the ban. It was confiscated at Narita when the customs official there found it. Nanghinayang ako kasi gustung-gusto ko iyon. Iyong tsampoy nakalusot.

It is not being anti-China. It is more for preservation of precious lives especially in the case of the milk now found toxic.

  14. Chi,

Matibay din ang sikmura ng mga pilipino. More often than not, we don’t hear of the poor in the Philippines dying even when the noodles they eat get contaminated.

Wonder if we can make money out of excess milk ng mga naglalaglag. at least pure and unadulterated.

Thanks grizzy; but I just said it might be a possibility. I strongly believe in keeping our bodies and minds healthy. To help us do so we follow the Word of Wisdom. God’s law also instructs us on the good foods and substances we should use. Certainly, the Chinese milk products found to be toxic are not good foods.

  17. I have always been cautious with products that made in China.I don’t buy them. This current scandal further confirms my fear.I don’t buy them because of bad quality products, except orange and kung fao chicken and a fancy name on a menu about how they cooked Tilapia at Chinese restaurant, recounting about my fumbles with using chopsticks to eat a fish cooked whole, having to pick out the meat without swallowing the bones.

Made in China, they are cheap no doubt but at what costs? My health and my life?

Remember the defective radial tires made for light trucks? They are blaming the car manufacturer especially the Ford Explorer model. They found out that it was a tire that made in China.

The defective tires were manufactured by Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co. Ltd. The tires were found to be made with a missing or insufficient gum strip which helps keep the belts of a tire bound together.

Some tested models had separations at the belt edges, a problem that led to the massive 2000 recall of Bridgestone and Firestone tires, which were blamed for accidents that caused 148 deaths.

On Aug. 14, 2007 Mattel announced the recall of 18.2 million toys – about half of which were sold in the United States – because some were covered with lead paint while others contained small, powerful magnets that could be swallowed by young children.

Two weeks earlier Mattel announced the recall of nearly one million Fisher-Price toys in the United States because of lead paint used by its Chinese manufacturer on 83 different products.

It’s undeniable that China makes cheap products. They should however do a proper quality control of the products to maintain reputation.

  18. For all that Cocoy has enumerated, it is more possible that the Chinese could have exported those toxic materials to the USA in an attempt to reduce US population and annihilate the people there. That surely is wishful thinking on the part of the Chinese, many of whom I understand are prejudiced against the Americans just like the North Koreans who are brainwashed to condemn the people of the USA.

We have some dollar-dollar shops here called “Hyaku-en Shop” with products all made in China. I notice that with China now getting more economically powerful than the US, a lot many of their products now are no longer tagged as dollar-dollar but now cost about 500 yen or more.

In the US, Daizo, the dollar-dollar shop in Japan, have very few items now below 1 dollar. Items there now range from 2 dollar up, and even if they are supposed to be Japanese items, majority are actually made in China. Daizo has shops in Daly City, Union City and San Jose in the Bay Area. I don’t know if they have shops in other parts of California and the USA for that matter.

  19. Off topic, but who is Anthony Goilez trying to impress calling the trip of the punggok to the UN successful? Gago din ano? How can a speech delivered to her 70 hakot and a few hangers on there be considered successful? Inutil din ano especially when the idiot was not even given a line or two in US and world newspapers for her useless trip. Enough is enough! Tama na ang hallucination ni Gloria. Nakakasawa na!

  20. airos airos

BANNING China’s Melamine tainted foods is not enough. The Chinese government and the manufacturers should be asked to PAY PAY PAY for the health, business and economic damages worth BILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

The Chinese government failed to check that these manufacturers failed to abide to the NUTRITION FACTS of the food they manufacture.

The manufacturers cheated and deceived the consumers by adding Melamine to FAKE the food they manufacture is rich in PROTEIN. This kind of deception is a crime against humanity.

    LET’S MAKE THEM PAY.

    ////////////////////////////////////////

BFAD of the Philippines should be very strict on imported foods and drugs. BFAD should charge the exporting manufacturers for testing the products they wish to export.
BFAD should not rely only on the documents submitted by export applicants. BFAD should have a mindset that NOT ALL IMPORTED GOODS ARE GOOD.

There is a clear answer to the milk crisis confronting us. There should have been no crisis at all if only the DAIRY INDUSTRY of the Philippines has been pursued and developed. It may take time but the government should spur and pump-prime the development of our dairy industry. We have the resources and the land to put up milk producing cattle but it seems the government is contented in the importation of milk specially from china (big money in importation and smuggling for corrupt officials?). So far only small dairy cooperatives are engage in milk production which is a very minuscule amount compared with the requirements of the population. There is a very large market but we need to capitalize and allow the use of large tracts of land for the pasture of dairy cattle. However, CARP prohibits the ownership of large landholdings for agriculture. These policies stunts the dairy industry.
Yet the answer to the milk crisis stares us in the eye – develop the Philippine Dairy Industry fast and now.

gloria said at the Women League Forum:

‘’So as women leaders, we must be champions of women in this, especially to those who are in need. It is now, more than ever, that we need women’s voices to be heard to fight for the rights and opportunities of women, both in our respective nations and in the whole world,’’ she said.

What a farce coming from gloria. She is the reason no woman will become President in the country for a long long time. She has completely destroyed the image of women as good leaders and administrators.

  22. pilipinaskongmahal pilipinaskongmahal

Even this fake midget president should also be banned from coming back to the country! She’s a toxic and dysfunctional product from China that requires no more testing! Melamine and those other chemicals are nothing compared to just the toxins inside that molehill! Her presence alone has been killing this country like faster than all the hurricanes combined.

Now this is off-topic. Is it just here in Misamis Oriental or Bayani Fernando’s campaign stickers are also posted in different areas in Manila and the other provinces? Fernando’s operators are posting stickers like crazy as if there’s no more tomorrow! LANG HIYA! He deserves the worst worms for this early bird blunder!

  23. kabute kabute

There is a clear solution to the milk crisis created by the melamine tainted china made milk. But these solution has been neglected by the government for so long. This is the development of the Philippine Dairy Industry. The country does not lack for the resources for the development of the dairy industry. We have the land for pasture and to raise the dairy cattle needed, we have the technical know how of milk production, we can source the breeds of cattle that produce good volumes of milk, there are the funds to invest in the dairy industry. Yet there are only small dairy cooperatives in operation. The government should spur and pursue the development of the dairy industry. The sad note is – there is no money for the corrupt officials to make here. But there is money for them in importation and smuggling of china made tainted milk. Erap started the Philippine Carabao Center which also breed carabaos to produce milk. This is a logical step to follow – proceed to dairy cattle – then we can have more milk production. Sad to say, gloria won’t do it if it is Erap’s idea. Mapapahiya siya. With a dairy industry, the health of the country’s population will benefit enormously from it.

    Agree, pilipinaskongmahal.

Gloria is the most toxic of all and should be banned along with contaminated products from China.

Kahit magkamatay pa lahat ang babies sa Pinas dahil sa milk from China, Gloria won’t lift a finger to ban Chinese products from entering/smuggled in the country. Besides, mawawalan ng delihensya ang mga Pidal kasama si toh. Ang takot lang sa Tsina ng impaktang yan!

Decades ago, Japanese products were considered inferior and bad. Anything made in Japan particularly electronics was bad. But today, Japan produces the best quality. I think China is starting what Japan did decades ago. The problem with China is that she over produced or over manufactured in her eagerness, call it greed, to capture the world market. China’s invasion of US economically has long succeeded. Next to successful economic invasion may come military control. The US is aware of this. That’s why by means of powerful Western media with control over other countries, they try to destroy China. This is not to say that the Chinese products are not bad. They are indeed bad…but let’s also look at the other side of the picture.

  26. BE:

Before WWII, Japanese products were oftentimes called “parang apa” or like the wafer cones used for ice creams that were then produced by Japanese manufacturers. What the Chinese do, however, is nothing similar to what the Japanese did before Japanese products became good and acceptable to consumers. There was no intention to deceive on the part of the Japanese manufacturers. It was more like lack of the right material, etc. unlike the Chinese who are supplied with everything—money, materials, etc. by Japan, US, etc.

I doubt if Chinese products will have the same quality as post-WWII products of Japan that Americans prefer to buy no matter the price as a matter of fact. That is actually what differs Japanese products from items produced in China—trust and quality!

It is high time for government to fully invest in the development of he Philippine Dairy Industry. This industry has been neglected for so long and only lip-service is invested by the government. It was only during Eraps time that part of the dairy industry was given a push through the Philippine Carabao Center, an initiative of Erap were Philippine carabaos were being upgraded to produce more milk. Today only a handful of cooperatives are involved in dairy production. Its milk products are minuscule compared to he requirements of the Philippine population. We have the land for pasture and raising dairy cattle, we have the technology and the human resource to engage in dairy production, there are already existing policies on dairy that are dormant. We also have the funds in government for dairy. The sad note is government officials would rather import milk specially from china(the corrupt money is in importation and smuggling) and large dairy multi-national companies benefit more. We are in essential subsidizing the airy farmers of other countries. The Philippines is more blessed with resources that say Israel where the dairy industry in thriving. Yes the solution to the milk crisis stare us in the eyes.

What do you know…even Chinese made toxic shoes!

Italian police said Friday they had confiscated some 1.7 million counterfeit shoes made with leather containing illegal toxins, most of them from China.

Operation “Toxic Shoes” began in May and 21 Chinese and seven Italians are now being prosecuted for selling counterfeit products and threatening public health, a police spokesman told AFP.

Shoes containing hexavalent chromium compounds which are illegal in Italy due to their high toxicity and potentially carcinogenic effect were seized in Tuscany, police said.

  33. “DOH expert downplays health risks from China milk, ABS-CBN
A Department of Health (DOH) official on Saturday downplayed the risks, especially for adults, of getting kidney stones by drinking melamine-contaminated milk from China.
Tayag explained that melamine posed a lesser threat for adults since it would take more than 15 cups of milk everyday for several months, saying that it would take a record-holder to drink that much milk. “Pero yung mga sasali sa Believe it or Not, baka ayun pa,” he said.
Although intake of melamine-contaminated milk can lead to kidney stones, Tayag pointed out that there are many other causes of kidney failure. He reiterated that not all cases of kidney ailments should be traced back to melamine-tainted products.”

The good doctor’s comment is indicative of an ailment: propaganda-itis, that stems from the Palace and sweeping thru officialdom. 37. If China takes these issues positively and strictly aims for superior quality control while maintaining manufacturing efficiency, then the whole world can give up on manufacturing and leave it all to China. What is ironic however, is that those who are hardest hit by this outsourcing are those who were very vocal in favor of globalization. Economists like the self-acclaimed One, were only correct in so far as forecasting a global competition that would bring the prices of many commodities down. What they failed to see is that quality controls and ethical practices that differ greatly between different countries would be difficult to standardize since various cultures still promote shortcuts for a quick buck.

Would you believe even Ligo Sardines and some other canned meat are now counterfeited in Guangdong and sold at marginally cheaper prices? So are Marlboro, Pantene Shampoo, among others that are labelled “Made in the Philippines”. You can also include Nokia cellphones, BBS Mag Wheels, Apple iPods, Rolex Watches, Louis Vuitton leatherware, Swarovski Crystals, all brands of shoes, or whathaveyou. I’m sure if there are branded toothpicks, even those would be faked, too.
