Stop the witch hunt

Update:PNP now in search of ‘Makapili’ among reporters

PNP admits it has no goods against lady reporter

Since when has a journalist interviewing a person involved in a situation a crime?

The RPN-9 video that was supposedly the PNP “smoking gun” to discredit media in connection with the Nov. 29 Manila Pen incident just showed Dana Batnag, reporter of Jiji Press, a Japanese news agency, talking with Marine Capt. Nicanor Faeldon, who was one of the Magdalo officers who walked out of their hearing at the Makati Regional Trial Court, proceeded to the Manila Pen and called for the ouster of Gloria Arroyo’s illegitimate government.

There was nothing in the picture as described by no less than the justice secretary and the PNP chief that showed a “female reporter helping Capt Nicanor Faeldon escape by giving him a press ID.”

There was nothing in the picture described by PNP spokesman Nicanor Bartolome as a female reporter “may inaabot” (handing him something).

Is that rebellion as threatened by Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez?

This latest incident involving government lying shows the frustration of the Arroyo’s minions over media, that is seen now as the remaining democratic institution that Arroyo has not fully broken and tamed.

It’s Dana on whom they are now focusing. Earlier it was me, Ces Drilon and Charmaine Deogracias of NHK.

Newspapers accurately described the PNP’s operation as witch hunt.

Wikipedia describes a witch hunt “as a search for witches or evidence of witchcraft, often involving moral panic, mass hysteria and mob lynching, but in historical instances also legally sanctioned and involving official witchcraft trials.”

The term is often used to refer to similarly panic-induced searches for perceived wrong-doers other than witches. The best known example is probably the McCarthyist search for communists during the Cold War.

In the 1950’s, American Senator Joseph McCarthy accused many American citizens of being Communists or Communist sympathizers, and hearings were held by anti-Communist committees, panels and “loyalty review boards” across the United States. These hearings, later deemed unconstitutional, resulted in ostracism, ruined careers or even imprisonment for tens of thousands, and represent a major breakdown in civil liberties and civil discourse.

One of those that McCarthy tried to destroy was broadcaster Edward Murrow of CBS. In the movie, “Good Night and Good Luck”, there’s a passionate quote by Murrow which should inspire us as we battle the evil designs of Arroyo and her minions to destroy our democracy.

Murrow said: “We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law.

“We will not walk in fear, one or another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men – not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend courses that were, for the moment unpopular.”

***

We should send this text message to Arroyo, all officials of Malacañang, PNP chief Avelino Razon and to the military:

Stop destroying our sacred institutions. Defend the PRESS and STOP all forms of harassment.

The political system has been corrupted, the military and police have been divided, the courts and the church have also been compromised.

Now, the Fourth Estate, the last bastion of democracy is under attack. Let us unite and stand together to defend press freedom.

    Are their faces red!

First, they talked nothing but a coup plot to be launched by a leftists-rightists-politicians combine anywhere between Jan. 19 to 22 to topple Gloria and her government.

The days came and went, and there was not a single whiff of a destabilization, much less a coup d’etat.

  2. Statement of Sen. Francis Pangilinan:

Kiko to PNP: Put Up or shut up

Senate Majority Leader and Independent senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan today criticized the Philippine National Police (PNP) for floating unsubstantiated information regarding a journalist who allegedly facilitated the escape of Marine Capt. Nicanor Faeldon during the Manila Peninsula siege.

Police authorities earlier claimed Faeldon was able to sneak out of the Manila Peninsula through the help of a journalist.

Kiko explains that this scenario being painted by the police is highly unlikely, considering that battalions of law enforcers were able to contain and secure the area. But assuming for the sake of argument they are correct then the proper thing to do is file the necessary charges. It is the height of unprofessional behavior when those in the national police force resort to innuendo and the sowing of intrigue to present their case to the public.

Ayan ha, coming from one of Gloria’s backbenchers yan!

  5. Razon must be eying Boy Abunda’s slot in The Buzz or Joey de Leon’s in Star Talk. The AFP and PNP have once again evolved. They are better than farmers at “planting” and better at baiting than “fishermen”. What’s next? They’ll be tailors, good at sewing lies.

Whatever Kiko does today doesn’t make people forget what he did during the canvassing of votes in Congress. Of course he has ambition in 2010…balita ko gustong mag-Vice President. But, Kiko’s name shall always be identified with “Mr. Noted”.

Stop the Witch Hunt? Why still hunt for the witch when the biggest witch is there at the Palace?

  8. balweg balweg

Do we think that the EK regime will stop their witch hunting gimmickry? I don’t think so coz’ they are really sucking the blood of every Pinoyzki and trying to destroy the foundation of democracy in our country.

It’s now time for all of us to wake up and we need to stand united against these sorcerers who witch-hunt to victimize innocent people or whoever they wanted to be a fall guy in their quest in their evil deeds.

  9. balweg balweg

    Ka BB,

I’m not Sharonian at lalo na di ako believe diyan kay Mr. Noted.

  10. balweg balweg

    Ka Rose,

Sang-ayon sa Merriam-Webster 10th edition, witch-hunt means, the searching out and deliberate harassment of those (as political opponents) with unpopular views.

But if we will apply this word in laymans word, di ba popular ang issues na ito kaya inis-talo yang EK at kung anu-ano ang pinaglululubid na tsismis para lalong lituhin ang Masang Pinoy at sirain ang image ng taga-Media.

  11. Brownberry Brownberry

Balweg, the late Pasay Mayor Cuneta was also a Marcos loyalist until the end. Deep inside Sharon’s heart, she’s pro-Erap and opposition from the beginning. I can say the same thing with Gov. Vilma Santos. But then, just like other people they are overcome by political interests.

Hi Schumey have a nice day to you,

RE: Razon must be eying Boy Abunda’s slot in The Buzz or Joey de Leon’s in Star Talk.

I predict a sudden cooling in the ardor of media over this incident. I predict that the Big Media Moguls, the owners and bosses of those reporters and photographers, will be thinking twice about their stake in all of this. And whether, as the shrillest are claiming, Press Freedom really is under attack, or whether as the Public sees it, Media was at fault.

It may yet occur to the real decision makers in the Big Business that is Mass Media that really, what happened was, their people made a mistake, a bad decision, got all caught up in the situation….So, let a few heads roll or apologize, make peace with the Cops, quietly, let bygones be bygones and keep the Franchise safe.

Given that there is no “outrage” even among the media itself, who I think know the mischief their colleagues got into at the Pen, and with the Supreme Court unlikely to grant amparo to ten employees of the country’s largest media conglomerate, (fer cryin’ out loud!)==I bid you all a fair good night! (I mean, howz that gonna look on Puno’s resume for some big job in Geneva, amparo-ing Gabby Lopez?)

BTW, I am not concluding anything from this fact from Bill Billig (the Igorot Blogger). It seems that Dana is quite a famous young lady. Won a song writing contest of Roger Whittaker that’s used by Unicef. She’s from Besao, Mt. Province, long a liberated area of the New People’s Army.

  14. Re: “She’s from Besao, Mt. Province, long a liberated area of the New People’s Army.”

    Do I detect innuendo there?

    Hey schumms,
You can be thankful if they are tailors for now. Let us keep up our vigilance before they become butchers. Considering the smokescreen foisted on the media, it is highly probable that they have butchered Faeldon already. His lawyer doesn’t even know where he is.

Esperoni extention is thier business, so why we bother if EK granted his long stay in the AFP. Let’s see and wait, the action of disgruntled military hierarchy to revolt and express their disappointment about this matter.

Tabako insinuated to extend Esperoni retirement due to the fact that he is the most trusted Garci boyz and have capable to pin down all forces against EK.

Rule of law still manipulating the sanctity of all institutions under her command.

As I said in the other thread…From my own perspective as against that of DJBRIZALIST, Media at the Pen was “NOT THERE TO OBSTRUCT JUSTICE”, but rather to “PREVENT INJUSTICE”. And this is a RIGHT and a RESPONSIBILITY of every citizen, whether media or not.

I am not so much bothered by Media “cooling off” after this incident, as what DJBRIZALIST has predicted. What concerns me is more are the lying, cheating and stealing that is “heating up” just so Gloria Esperon stay in power.

Gloria Esperon Razon are the “newsmakers” and Media provides the news they make to its viewers and listeners. Unfortunately, all the news that Gloria Esperon Razon et al make are about cheating, lying and stealing. The actions of these thieves, cheats and liars won’t pass muster even to the most irresponsible reporter.

  24. Sulbatz:

Huwag mo nang pansinin si Bocobo, who, judging from yours and other posts replying to his posts, is trying hard to be just a fortune teller now.

Let’s just pulse our own selves, true feelings and sentiments for bayan sinilangan.

As for the journalists cooling off, I doubt.

For every discipline or career, a certain qualification applies. Or a monkey is always a monkey no matter what. The police hierarchy is supposed to be staffed with at least a lawyering stuff. Parttime defense counsel or trial judge advocate or court martial member stint is not adequate experience to meet the intricacies of legal battles. We must remember that law is not a science. Kung sa military nga ibibigay, sayangs lang. Legal manners is absent in military science. Karina is very correct sa kanyang conclusion. Square pegs should not go to round holes. They should be hunting down established criminals. Not hunting and seeking fame in witch ko lang.

  28. DJBRIZALIST DJBRIZALIST

I guess what most people on this thread really don’t see is the entire corpus of the Mass Media and how it is a Bigger Business than agriculture or industry, considering how truly little of the latter we do. Our production of slanted news and weird views is much greater than the Malampaya gas production. We make more editorials and erudite opinions than electronics. The Right to Know is reckoned higher than the Right to Live or the right NOT to know. Yet organized journalism as an institution make no mistake about it, is a commercial, for profit enterprise.

Electron for electron Wowwowee is still much more profitable than any oil company or electric utility. Radio, TV, print is a major industry serving the masses, employing millions. Media is the industry of the Filipinos, unless they are insurgents or the guys running after the insurgents and cheating the elections.

The newspapers, after killing hundreds of trees daily and blasting them with toxic chemicals to make them whiter then spreading them all over the place, are mainly hawkers of telecomm load and gossip. Without the sensationalistic wrappers called The Front Page, really, who would buy them?

It’s one of our most established and oldest industries, the Mass Media. Which makes you wonder whatever happened to the Right to Know and why the Public is still always in the dark, or worse, the bright lights of commercialized journalizm.

Since the well of knowledge is known to be infinite, it is not enough for journalists to claim the Right to Know is what they are serving. For the truth is, they’re making a living just like the police and govt officials. The truth is, their work is no more honorable or worthy or possessive of more rights than that of the police or the general public.

And so, like in so many other clashes with the media, it’s to do with their own inflated concept of their importance. Which is huge, but dispersed, sacred but shared by all, not just the journalists!

Still without these pot boilers stirred and churned by the Mass media itself, how could they sell papers and satisfy the public’s right to know what Simm to buy this week, or which teen starlet got pregnant last night.

Much as I want to heed your advice, I subscribe to a line in the poem DESIDERATA….”listen to others even the DULL and IGNORANT. They, too, have their own story.” Bulok nga lang ang istorya nya.

However, the same poem admonishes us to…”speak your truth quietly and clearly…..” I’d say that we “SPEAK OUR TRUTH LOUDLY AND CLEARLY” for the benefit of the dull and ignorant. I don’t really know how it would affect those who PRETEND to be dull and ignorant but are actually cowards.

Off topic: Mabuti pa yung Italian Prime Minister at nag-resign na following the defeat in senate. Yan ang tunay na leader hindi katulad ng DOROBO na kahit na ayaw ng mga tao sa kanya, sige pa rin ang suhol niya sa lahat so her tenure will be prolonged. Iba talaga ang mga leaders ng “first” world countries dahil marunong silang mahiya. Dito sa Pilipinas,we will always be a “third” world country kasi “pakapalan” ng mukha ang umiiral sa ating political system-no accountability, corruption lang in all forms prevail!

  33. Yup, stop the witchhunt! Ilabas si Faeldon!

Like Chi, I would not like to think that the sundalong kanin got him.

OK, they threatened to blow up the criminals running the government if they would not step down. Anong masama noon? Pero di ba nagkaroon naman ng negotiation at pangakong their grievances would be heard? O nasaan na iyong pangako at bakit ngayon they are treated as ordinary criminals? Mas kriminal iyong mga squatters doon sa palace by the murky river na hindi marunong tumupad ng pangako at salita.

“Our production of slanted news and weird views is much greater than the Malampaya gas production.”

Dean, you might be reading and listening too much on those Gloria controlled newspapers, radios and TVs.

  39. Witness the French Revolution of 1789; serialized stories were published by underground newspapers; writers were led by Voltaire and Rousseau among others.

And as Dean knows very well, such things have happened right in America. Remember that US press magnate William Randolph Hearst used the power of the press to manipulate American public opinion, hence the Cuban revolution. Remember Watergate! Two enterprising journalists opened a can of worms and toppled the American president.

Dean knows the power of media and he is so afraid for Gloria who has become his heroine of late. Hence his vitriols agains media… I am just gobsmacked. What happened to you Dean?

  40. OOOps, Intro missing: Dean knows how dangerous the media can be… History shows us that revolutions were stirred by revelations….

  41. Remember too that Fatso Mike Arroyo used the press to convene the people to watch his wife’s coup d’état in 2001 when Fatso admitted in an interview with Graphic Magazine that he bought ONE MILLION COPIES of a local newspaper and distributed them to people…

Fatso said ” We bought one million and a half million copies of Pinoy Times to give away so the public could read about the Erap mansions and bank accounts.”

So Dean is wary of the power of media.

But hey Dean, let’s be philosophical about it: what’s good for the goose is good for the gander!

May matutunan pa ako. Bet you, one of these days, may regalo na siya mula kay Gloria Dorobo!

  44. I just talked to a friend in the media here, and asked about Dana Batnag. Golly, sikat pala siya! Nakiki-cooperate pa pala siya sa iba’t ibang foreign media syndicates like the Washington Post, etc. Baka mapahiya si Gloria Dorobo and company!

Arya Dana! Ipakita mo ang galing mo! Walang sinabi iyong unconfirmed injustice secretary who is now apparently engaging in gossipmongering kasi wala naman yatang alam sa trabaho sa DoJ. Same with those tsismosos in the AFP/PNP. ‘Kakakahiya!

  51. I think DJB would rather have a media that connives with the government like what the US have, they connived with the government inorder to justify their SHOCK AND AWE importation of violence. Too bad they got burned, now they have successfully imported the sub prime woes – bringing down the whole world with them down the drain.

I believe the media has become our LAST LINE OF DEFENSE already, all other instituions have been compromised!

  52. Sorry, I meant all other INSTITUTIONS, 🙂

  53. djb is doing what the PNP has been trying to do all this time – discredit the media. Sorry, CREDIBILITY is needed for that move to succeed.

  54. SULBATZ,

Relax. Don’t let DJB get your goat. Just imagine him squat thrusting in the hallway in bathrobe and towel, hehehe!

  55. Goodbye eveyone, I will be heading to the land of singkits already, if I can still blog there you’ll be hearing from me till next week – keep up the good fight!

  56. “Besides, I like the sound of Scream Therapy. Reminds me of Bedlam.” – djb

I just couldn’t ignore this comment. Yes, this blog has been called many things, before I joined I really had the impression that the inhabitants were foaming in the mouth, raving mad anti-Gloria types, or as what I was led to believe. Its been called CIRCUS, SCREAM THERAPY, and now BEDLAM (nuthouse). Well, its probably the only blog that has the most proximity to the true sentiments of the Filipino. The language used here is straight to the point, no beating around the bush with high falluting words cahracteristic of pseudo intellectuals you’ll see in other blogs that look at Ellensville as a bedlam of sorts. The excessive use of the Filipino language even gave others the impression that we’re commies for pete’s sake.
In the language of the people in the street – MGA TOTOONG TAO kami, not pretentious, oblivious, inhabitants of an ivory tower, who in their isolation to the country, to the people, blog to their hearts content all the products of their introspection. Come down from your ivory tower and be with the people, the smell might not agree with your taste but I assure you its real.

  57. “The newspapers, after killing hundreds of trees daily and blasting them with toxic chemicals to make them whiter” – DJB

hahaha! This only shows your ignorance! Local newspapers are printed on newsprint which are made from recycled wastepaper. We just reuse old paper really, with deinking enzymes (organic), for optical brighteners minimal chlorine is used (within allowed levels) and lately some newspapers are using the soya ink (made from soy beans) so its organic and lead content if any is extremely minimal already. If the newspaper you’re reading is not using soya ink, please tell them to contact Newspaper Paraphernalia, Inc. (NPI), they produce it locally in Print Town Complex in Laguna. Need the number?

  58. Paper is my business. 🙂

Dean Bocobo’s blog is so dull and boring, he always come to Ellenville to scream for his own therapy.

Ibig sabihin some of media people are playing with fire, yang ABS-CBN, PCIJ, PDI at iba pa eh kapural yan sa pagpapabagsak kay ERAP ngayon bakit tinatalikuran na nila si GMA.

Was a celebrated figure in the Philippine Revolution and a leading propagandist for reforms in the Philippines. Sumikat sa taguring Plaridel, he was the editor and co-publisher of La Solidaridad. He tried to marshal the nationalist sentiment of the enlightened Filipino ilustrados, or bourgeoisie, against Spanish imperialism.

  62. I think it has already been mentioned here that Dana wrote the lyrics of “I am but a small voice”, a song that won in a Unesco songwriting contest.

  63. Jug: In the language of the people in the street – MGA TOTOONG TAO kami, not pretentious, oblivious, inhabitants of an ivory tower, who in their isolation to the country, to the people, blog to their hearts content all the products of their introspection.

Sinabi mo pa, Jug. Truth is I am septilingual–not just bi– but I’d rather use Tagalog when talking to Filipinos or Ilocano if I am talking to an Ilocano, etc. Spokening England although when in California I revert back to my American English that my foster Mom in UK really abhorred.

I don’t like Gloria Dorobo’s English. Masakit sa tainga. It’s actually how all the Assumptionistas I’ve met talk. Ang sagwa talagang pakinggan.

Marami sa atin dito may M. A. and DPhil din, and graduates of universities like Sorbonne, Oxford, etc. like Anna, HG, et al. Sinong sabing wala kaming pinag-aralan.

  65. SULBATZ SULBATZ

    Bok jug,

Sabi ni DJB na-flatter ko raw sya. Now I know what you mean. Hahahaha

Bok, DJB is getting your goat too. Hahaha

  69. SULBATZ SULBATZ

Honestly, I like the presence of DJB in Ate Ellen’s blog. He affords us with a view from Gloria Esperon Razon’s perspective. The more he talks, the more Gloria’s credibility sinks. Hehehehe

    1) USA – English but no official language sa kanilang Constitution.
    3) UK – English, but ang scottish wisky at Welch Red Grape Juice eh maysariling identities.

So, ibig sabihin sila eh napakagaling mangodiko.

Juggernaut, i concur with your observation at 11:44am. I’ve mentioned before in Manolo’s blog that i think Ellen’s blog has the pulse of majority of the Filipinos.

OK walang masamang maging katulong. Trabaho din iyon, but my golly, wala na bang mas magandang trabaho na hindi iyong trabahong walang pinag-iba sa mga alipin?

  77. Balweg:

I tried to study German, too, kasi nga sabi nila kamag-anak ng ingles, pero hindi ako natoto. Thus, I think English developed on its own, walang kinalaman sa German.

English is a West Germanic language that originated from the Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain by Germanic settlers and Roman auxiliary troops from various parts of what is now northwest Germany and the Northern Netherlands.

Initially, Old English was a diverse group of dialects, reflecting the varied origins of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms of England.

One of these dialects, Late West Saxon, eventually came to dominate. The original Old English language was then influenced by two waves of invasion. The first was by language speakers of the Scandinavian branch of the Germanic family; they conquered and colonized parts of Britain in the 8th and 9th centuries.

Only refreshing our world history subject! Nothing else.

    DJBRIZALIST,
I checked where those trees are cut. The trees are harvested from plantations, cut to pieces and hauled by woodchip carriers to the paper makers then sold as newsprints to the publishers who employ the print media. Whats your problem now. Are you worried if they copy comic books like Rizal?

  81. I did a lot of touring when I was a student in UK, Balweg. I made it a point to go on a trip at leat once or twice a month, kasama na ang research because I studied in fact historical linguistics over there. I met a variety of Brits who spoke the same language with a variety of accents and pronunciations enough for me to have enough confidence in my own capacity to express myself in English. I tried speaking Gaelic, too, but without practice, nawala.

True there are words here and there of English in German for instance and vice versa, but one does not and cannot learn German just because he can speak English. Hindi kaparis nang nag-aral ako ng French. When I studied German, I did not experience the same ease I had when I studied French or Italian with my basic knowledge of Spanish (I had 24 units of it when I was at UP) that is why linguistically speaking, IMHO, English and German are not the same.

I know old English. It’s the English of the old King James version of the Bible or the language of Shakespeare, but still I don’t see how one can master German with basic English.

    My Take:

    DJBRizalist has a time-sensitive dilemma!

Frustrated and wondering what else needs to be done to eventually be accepted by GMA and to finally be showered with people’s money from the National Treasury before 2010.

My advice to DJBRizalist: You might want to use the likes of Gonzalez, Singson, Abalos, Puno and foremost, GMA as your role models.

    Or otherwise, forget about it!

By the way, spending time on this blog will not advance your plight!

    All the best, DJBRizalist!

corruption is never out of topic in ellenville.

    From ABS-CBN interactive:

“DND nullifies helicopter contract due to irregularities

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro on Friday ordered the nullification of the P1.2 billion ($296 million) contract awarded to Asian Aerospace Corp. for the procurement of six attack helicopters.

Teodoro said the contract has been nullified after an investigating committee discovered that the original specifications for the helicopters had been altered without his knowledge.”

Comment: this is the third time different newspapers had reported that $296 million equals P1.2 billion. At P41 to the $1, $296 million is equal to P12136 million or P12.136 billion. Or am I dumber than million of Pinoy readers, bloggers? 12.136 minus 1.2 equals P10. 936 billion. That makes for a million suckers.

The point? If you own the Philippines you can steal by the millions of US dollars and stash billions of pesos. You can buy royalty titles in England and Spain. You don’t even have to pay that much to buy Congress, the Bishops, and the Justices. Just appoint them, help them cheat in the elections, give them power and money for life and of course, a few loose change for the bishops. The wolves and vampires are not salivating for the presidency after 2010 day one. They want to own the Philippines.

  85. Brownberry Brownberry

Balweg, mas type ko ang mga taong sumusulat at gumagamit ng Tagalog at English, a combination of both. Hindi iyon puro English na lang. I can understand non-Tagalogs being hesitant to speak Tagalog because of the accent; but in writing no one hears you say it. People like grizzy and many of you are the kind of bloggers who I think fit into my preference when it comes to writing style. I admire those with language skills meaning one who knows how to speak two or more languages. That’s an asset in this highly competitive world.

Why did she still extend his term? And almost everyone disagreed except FVR. Biro mo itong FVR lang ang kaisa-isang former President na nag-comment in favor of Esperon’s extention. Sobra ka naman halata, FVR. Alam namin bata mo iyan pero why make it obvious? Are you telling us that what Esperon did, all the crimes against the people he committed, and whatever he does have your consent and permission? Ikaw ba ang nag-uutos sa kanya? I hope there’s going to be a revolution so that you (FVR) and Esperon can be lined up and executed by firing squad.

  86. Brownberry Brownberry

By the way, Manero has been released from prison. Here is one man who was convicted of murder and set free. There is Trillanes and the rest who did not hurt anyone but are in jail. And they call this country a democratic one? BS !

    Jay Cynikho,

RE: The point? If you own the Philippines you can steal by the millions of US dollars and stash billions of pesos.

  88. atty36252 atty36252

    To grizzy:

I beg to differ. I found German easier than Spanish and French. I read and write both; German, I have no practice, but was able to communicate when I went to Frankfurt.

Balweg is right, German, English, Dutch and Danish are related. After all, Anglo-Saxon comes from Angles (the tribe that became the later day English) and Saxon, from lower Saxony in Germany. The British isles were invaded by the Angles (from Angeln, in northwestern Germany), the Jutes (from Jutland in Denmark) and Saxons, from Lower Saxony, Germany.

Pasensya na. I had a pretty classmate in History, so I had to bone up, para ma-impress. These are remnants of that learning from ages ago, kasama nung kaalaman ng mga Ostrogoths and Visigoths (the commandants called us that in ROTC); CMT na ngayon, sa kabataan.

I do not dispute your experience with the German language, but other people have the opposite experience, as to its ease, if one knows English.

  89. balweg balweg

Deputy Exec. Directors, executive directors and military officers ang iba dito like captains, majors, colonels, and Generals pero bakit ba nagkakaintindihan naman kami.

  90. balweg balweg

Many thanks Hon. Atty36252: I love history since my elementary days… top 1 ako pag ito ang pinag-usapan sa klase kaya almost everday during my skul days eh laman ako ng library and also i love too the current events and religion et al.

    A refreshing thought!

  91. balweg balweg

Only in the Philippines, Ka BB!

Tell me, which country is better to immigrate, Canada or US? And do you know Canadians are allowed to travel to Cuba by the Cuban government but not Americans?

  94. Atty:

My practical experience differ from yours, apparently. Truth was my foster family in England had an au pair from Germany when I was there.

She was hired for a little fee and in exchange for some lessons in English. She actually spoke very little English and when she spoke German, nobody in the house could understand her except me with my little knowledge of German that I did not find easy to learn the way I found French to be with my knowledge of Spanish.

That is why I know they are not the same even when the language of England may have belonged to the same language family as German just like when they describe Pilipino as belonging to the Malayo-Polynesian language group.

  95. balweg balweg

I live somewhere around the globe Ka BB.

  96. balweg balweg

    Ka Grizzy,

Hoping one of this day, eh magkadaop-palad tayo sa UK. I’m happy to see you in person kasi plano ko to visit my sister living in UK, but no tentative date yet.

  97. Brownberry Brownberry

Why that distinction between Fil-Canadians and Fil-Americans, Balweg? In fact, I’m told Canadians are friendlier and nicer than the Americans. So, we could also say that Pinoys in Canada behave similarly if not better than those in the US? Anyway, what language is the most difficult to learn and speak in the world, if there is one?

  98. balweg balweg

Ka DJB: I agree with you!

  99. balweg balweg

RE: Why that distinction between Fil-Canadians and Fil-Americans, Balweg?

Ka BB, both of them have the same common denominator, except ang FilAm eh may pagka cowboy syiempre naman si uncle Sam eh tubong Texas, but ang FilCan eh may pagka-royalty ang dating.

Wow! Inutil!

  102. balweg balweg

  104. Brownberry Brownberry

Remember that Korean immigrant in the US who killed lots of students in the campus. When he was asked to speak in the class and recite, the teacher made fun of him. Yelling and asking him: What? What are you talking about? And his classmates were laughing. He kept that hatred in his heart until that tragic day when he decided to commit suicide by killing the students and teachers.

One good example is this Vincent Bueno from Austria whose parents are pure Pinoys. He was born and grew up in Austria. He recently won the popular Music competition in Austria. He speaks English, German as well as Tagalog fluently. Nakita niyo? He’s coming to the Philippines to be the guest of ABS-CBN and do some joint concerts with the likes of Gary Valenciano who’s his idol. Watch out for this Vincent Bueno. Magaling kumanta ala-Broadway, sumayaw at umarte sa stage. Pogi na, magaling na…Pinoy pa!

  105. Brownberry Brownberry

The real reason for Esperon’s extension is that Gloria needs someone loyal like him to ride herd over the restive military. It’s an insult to those in the list of likely successors, including Esperon’s designated heir, Army chief Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano, but why should Gloria care? Her singular concern is how to stay in power until 2010, and possibly beyond.

Of course, Esperon can’t very well stay for two-and-a-half more years. But in the meantime that he’s there, Gloria will have the time to put to a test the loyalty of the would-be successors.

To mix up our imagery, we can already see the monkeys going through the hoops to prove their canine loyalty.

Test case for ex-justice Melo’s impartiality: Investigating the Hello Garci political scam and Maguindanao fraudulent 2007 special election. 116. Gago ang sistema no doubt. Bakit ba appointee ang nilalagay sa COMELEC? They should abolish this agency if it is as useless as it is in keeping elections in the Philippines clean. Aksaya lang ng taxpayers’ money ang ginagawa.

  117. Makapili? Are the police trying to rouse hostile sentiments against the Japanese?

Disgusting in the extreme that they can’t even be a bit more imaginative — why do they insist on dividing the Filipinos?

As it is, the nation is already so fragmented, what do these shitheads of the nation’s police hope to achieve by prodding Filipinos to be traitorous to one another. Next thing they will be doing is setting up posters Wanted dead or alive for so much and so little!

It’s not by shitting with media and not doing anything by way of search will they find their “rebel”!!! Shitheads of the camel and pig variety!

    Incredible dracula mentality!

  118. And DJBRizalist insists on supporting this Klu Klux Klan mentality of the police?

  119. DJBRIZALIST DJBRIZALIST

Har! Har! Har! I was wondering when they would come out with the old VICTIMOLOGY card. But really, to put themselves in the role of heroic guerillas being pursued by the Japananese is like pouring holy water on themselves. But it dishonors the true memory of the anti-fascist struggles of the 20th century. It is not so well known that many of the Makapilis were actually mothers or grandmothers whose children were threatened with torture or death by the Kempetai if they did not turn in the members of the underground resistance. But if one is looking for mendacious souls for sale, one is defintely looking in the right place among Filipino mass media practitioners.

What that has to do with the investigations into the alleged aiding and abetting the flight from Justice of rebel putschists, is lost in the Sturm Und Drang of defending sacred Press Freedom, that change of subject being precisely the point of this new wrinkle.

For a bunch as rambunctions and FREE as the Philippine Press however, it will be hard for even liberal fascists to impose a Rule of Omerta amongst their ranks. It’s no secret after all that some in so called impartial Media are actually partisans and actively if furtively support the insurgents of Left, Right or Backwards. That is in fact their right because there is no requirement upon Journalists to be neutral. None. However, the Big Businesses that employ them often find it useful for marketing purposes to claim “objectivity” and ought to have a moderating effect.

What in fact it boils down to, is that we, the People, fully expect the police authorities to investigate the crimes committed at Manila Pen, to discover the perps, arrest and prosecute them. No matter who they are.

The Media have the right to know this: they are citizens like everyone else, equal, no more and no less. Just because they are pedlars of information does not give them license to break the Law. Not even the parking regulations.

Certainly not the laws called Franchise that governs all broadcasting. Certainly not the Media Uber Alles philosophy of normally sane folks like Vergel Santos, who claims that Freedom of Speech is higher than the Right to Life (of the police of course!)

As Fr. Bernas asserts, and I agree, a Journalist has no more Freedom of Speech than anybody else!

When we are concerned about the plight of our country, these people are taking pot shots at those who actually had the guts to bring all these in the open and the media that worked so hard to let the people know whats going on in real time (without being edited by the powers that be).
I wonder where they’re coming from? What would they rather have? If humanity obeyed all the laws ever made in history, there would still be slavery in the US, we could still be under Spanish rule, and we would probably still be under distatorial rule. There are hundred thousands (a million already) of Filipino seamen going all over the world, many got stuck in so many places also. But language is never a problem. And to think not one of those seaman went to those prestigious colleges and universities here and abroad. Filipinos are gregarious. Antique is the poorest..it is a narrow strip of land..mountains on one side and water on the other. Ang karamihan sa Antique ay magsasaka (but they don’t usually own the land) and mangigisda. 147. Who says that the Philippines is a democratic country? I don’t think so. How can it be democratic when majority of Filipinos are shackled and chained in poverty, and their only way out is to leave the country and risk their lives, honor and dignity overseas as what has happened to a lot many Filipinos now waiting to be executed or languishing in foreign jails.

And who says that this attempt to make a criminal of a genuine and first-class journnalist is democratic? Golly, there is already the accusation, not just suspicion, and attempt to have this journalist tried by publicity even before they can establish whatever crime they say she has committed. Is that fair?

  148. Frankly, over in Japan, journalists do not join rallies if they are going to write about them, because it is going to be conflict of interest unless of course they are commissioned to write about their own experience. Otherwise, if they are just supposed to write a report, they need not be involved emotionally, physically and otherwise. I do not think a first-class journalist like Dana will dare break this rule.

Also, over here, majority of respected journalists are known to be left leaning and anti-establishment. It can’t be helped, I guess. One tends to end up being so when he sees the truth sans rose-colored glasses.

One thing sure is that over here, no one is called names like what Bocobo tags crusading journalists like the staff of Malaya. Commies daw! Bwahahahahahahaha! Nakakatawa ang pagka-ignorante!

  149. …Is that fair and democratic? Sa guniguni, no doubt!

  150. Hindi sinabing nanalo, Rose. Alam naman ng lahat na dinaya especially in provinces where the Pidals released millions and millions of public funds, including the funds paid by and for the OFWs. Remember how the OWWA funds were squandered for the Dorobo’s victory (daw).

Loren to cops: End witch-hunt vs media

Sen. Loren Legarda has urged Camp Crame to abandon its harassment of the media in connection with the Nov. 29 Peninsula Manila hotel standoff.

“We’re afraid nothing good and constructive could possibly come out of this witch-hunt,” said Legarda, a former broadcast journalist.

“This is definitely upsetting. Our sense is, some quarters in government want to use the Peninsula Manila incident as an excuse for tougher actions against the media later on, in similar crisis-situations,” Legarda warned.

  159. Sabi nga, Ellen, kahit huli nahahabol din. Dapat lang naman na tumulong si Loren sa mga threatened members of the media. Dati niyang teritoryo iyan. Kaya nga siya naboto. I hope she is doing it for the sake of truth and justice and not for politics.

Isingit ko lang itong item for the benefit of Fil-Canadians and those planning to move to Canada:

Suspect charged for killing of Pinoy mom in Calgary

A suspect in the killing of Filipino worker Arcelie Solbrito de Laoagan in Calgary, Canada had been charged with first-degree murder.

The Calgary Herald reported on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) that 21-year-old Christopher James Watcheston, a steelworker from Ontario, has been put behind bars and charged for Laoagan’s death on Jan. 19.

Laoagan, 41 years old, immigrated to Canada in 2004 after working as a nanny in Hong Kong for two years. She was returning home late Thursday night from her second job as a scanner operator at Western Canadian printing company when she was attacked near a train station.

Her roommate reported her missing Thursday night after she made a frantic call to a friend that she was being attacked, then the phone went dead.

Her blood-soaked body was found behind the Grace Baptist church Friday morning. The Calgary Police took time identifying the body as Laoagan’s because her face was mutilated beyond recognition, but her two sisters and a brother who had flown from Toronto on Jan. 21 were certain it was their sister.

Reports said Laoagan was taking two jobs because she wanted to save money and take her five children aged eight to 19 and husband to live with her in Calgary, a city in Alberta.

According to a report on Calgary Herald, Watcheston, who went to Calgary last year after losing a job in Fort McMurray, boarded the same east-bound commuter train that Laoagan took from work.

He reportedly visited his brother who was renting a basement suite in a Raddison Heights on the night Laoagan was killed. The house is a few minutes away from the Franklin station where Laoagan’s body was found the next morning.

Police searched Watcheston brother’s apartment for steel-toed boots, work coveralls and other evidence.

A neighbor said Watcheston frequently visited his brother and live-in girlfriend, but wasn’t living with them. A few days ago, he was fired from his job as a steelworker working near Beddington Trail last week, the Herald reported.

Watcheston is on trial for assault stemming from a Banff brawl last year. He had been arrested breaking into a North Hill Mall shop.

He was arrested on Thursday inside a friend’s home.

Laoagan’s remains are being prepared for repatriation to the Philippines.

According to kaigorotan blogsite, Laoagan was born in Naguilian, Isabela and lived in Santa Cruz, Ilocos Sur with her husband and children.

She had a degree in commerce but entered Canada as a nanny.

Greener pastures Ka Brownberry remember!

During Apo Macoy era, we had only 3 classes of lives in our country (Rich/Middle/Poor) noon, but this time mayroon nang classification like A, B, C, D, E. Ibig sabihin ang layo na ng gap between A and D class.

Ka Balweg, naitanong ko na ito and I’m asking you again, are you based abroad? Where? You sound like you’re a bit in favor of Apo Macoy’s regime. Tutoo iyan, hindi kasing hirap at sama noon. Ngayon, baka may mas mababa pa sa Class E. Baka may Class F na. But if you compare the Pinoys naman to other poorer countries in Africa, parang mas okay naman ang Pilipinas.
