Chief Justice Renato C. Corona has reported a net worth of P22.9 million and five pieces of property, including three condominium units he bought in the 10 years he was member of the Supreme Court.
Corona, who was impeached last month and is being tried by the Senate, has been accused of failure to disclose to the public his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth.
The impeachment complaint from the House of Representatives also quoted reports that that some of Corona’s properties were not included in his declarations and alleged he has accumulated ill-gotten wealth, having acquired assets of high values and keeping bank accounts with huge deposits.
Corona has invoked a 1992 en banc resolution restricting the release of SALNs of members of the judiciary in refusing to release the statements to the public.
But Supreme Court clerk of court Enriqueta Vidal was forced yesterday to surrender Corona’s SALNs since 2002 on orders of the Senate. Also yesterday, the Supreme Court authorized the turnover of the documents to the impeachment court.

Inquirer headline: Cuevas running rings around the prosecution
Very true. And while Cuevas is running rings around the prosecution, his client Corona is being buried by the prosecution in an avalanche of evidences. I don’t think Cuevas rings can save his client.
Too many properties valued in multi millions owned by the Corona family. Corona has to be a magician to make all the documents presented today disappear. The number of documents is so overwhelming! If I were him, I would have done a “maldita” exit-the Ombudsman who resigned before her trial.
Ojo! Corona didn’t declare wife working in John Hay

MANILA, Philippines – Chief Justice Renato Corona failed to declare in several of his Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth (SALNs) that his wife Cristina was working for a government-owned and -controlled corporation (GOCC).
This was one of the findings of blogger Raissa Robles after going over the SALNs turned over to the impeachment court on Wednesday.
In her new blog entry uploaded Thursday, Robles said Corona failed to disclose in his SALNs from 2002 to 2006 that his wife was working for the John Hay Management Corp..
Robles pointed out that the SALN law requires that public officials must disclose whether they have relatives working in government or GOCCs.
Section 8. (B) states: “Identification and disclosure of relatives. — It shall be the duty of every public official or employee to identify and disclose, to the best of his knowledge and information, his relatives in the Government in the form, manner and frequency prescribed by the Civil Service Commission.” http://www.abs-cbnnews.com
How much is the monthly salary of Corona vis a vis those declared properties?
psb, no resignation muna for Corona, the more fun in the Philippines has just began.
What if the wife has a separate SALN? Wala lang, just wondering. Hehehehe 😛
Nowadays, P23M is nothing. People are just obsessed in burying Corona in support of their idol Penoy. They turn blind when it comes to Penoy’s friends, associates, party mates, and KKKs. If people would look at the other side of the coin, especially the members of the House Prosecution Panel (Say for instance the Tupas family), they would find that Corona’s alleged wealth pale in comparison to that of his accusers’ whose hands are also drenched with blood of corruption. People who are thirsty for the blood of Corona are not interested in knowing the wealth of Penoy’s favorites, such as Sereno and Carpio. Sereno amassed a gargantuan legal fees in arbitration case of Piatco and Fraport, both in Singapore and New York, but her summary-declared SALN was on P17M. Also, the colossal wealth of Carpio which is highly disproportionate to his salary as Associate Justice would shock the mind of people who adhere to the principle of fair play. I noticed that abs-cbn, being a yellow media, is obsessed in digging dirt to bury Corona and never the dirt of Cornona’s enemies. People should be very careful. Some of Cornona’s accusers were former Gloria’s die hard supporters, such as Drilon (“I will build a Malacanang in the South for you Mrs. President”), Pangilinan (“Noted”)and Penoy himself who was a staunched supporter of Gloria from day one and refused to support her impeachment. Be very careful. In World History, leaders who disregard the rule of law end up being the target of law. Take the case of Gloria. Penoy may end up being hurled to jail someday. Change of luck will happen and the support of his blind followers will wane. …And I would say “weather-weather lang iyan…Ha-ha-ha!!!”
“Corrupts Govn’t Employees more fun in the Philippines”

This is a case of shoot first before you aim; or shoot and move the target so it gets hit.
The Article on the SALN only alleges failure to disclose. The House did not have any of the evidence they have now. In fact, they made their request from the LRA this month (January 2012).
So the charge was filed before the House learned of the facts, and now they are fishing for evidence; asking for the SALN, certificates of title, BIR docs, and bank accounts. They have, thus, moved the target from failure to disclose to graft and corruption, and perjury (according to Quimbo).
Tignan natin kung patas ang trato ng House, if the shoe is on another foot.
What if a complaint is filed by a citizen (at the House) copying and pasting Article 2 against Corona, and complaining against two justices, one from Noy’s camp, and another anti-noy?
Let the complaint be filed against Antonio Carpio, and Presbiterio Velasco (or Lucas Bersamin).
Will there be 188 signatures for both complaints? Or a different number for Carpio and Velasco (or Bersamin)? Or will there be a dismissal for both?
So where is Oliver Lozano? Or that other guy Pulido?
This is a way to test equal treatment from the House.
#7 your reasoning is the same palusot Trapos use: Everybody’s doing it so why can’t he?
23M is indeed not uncommon money but its still realistically unattainable money for someone who’s salary can’t explain how he got to pay all that (paid in full mind you as mentioned by the deed of sale; while corona said he’s still paying for it).
Yes yes, no one is saint in our government but that does not we can prosecute.
If you think Corona’s crimes is small, then why punish big criminals when you look the other way when its being made by “small-time” criminals? The big time criminals can use your reasoning, as Corona’s court love using: Sa batas, lahat dapat pantay pantay. No one should be singled out (remember the ruling sa EO#1?), so no case should be made against Arroyo este big time criminals.
Corona is the start of cleansing process and if we get him convicted, then it would be the crystalizing effect to the other members of the court (not just the SC; but the lower courts as well).
I for one have seen the wisdom of the exercise we are doing with Corona, a reminder that no matter how powerful, you will still fall if you do foolish things.
If we follow your suggestion and look at his crimes the other way, then we live in the world that lacks accountability in our leaders, work is done via palakasan, at puro kalokohan and racket lamang. There is no progress for the regular Filipino, not unless he partakes in “what everybody is doing.”
I for one prefer a life for any regular Filipino to be able to reach his dreams without being part of the activities of the scrupulous ones.
I’m sure you see it the other way since gaya ni GMA, there is a clear lack of conscience on your part. Tama?
#11, I’m just being practical. The kind of justice Penoy wants is selective which is no different from Gloria. During Gloria’s time, she accused Erap of corruption but she was worse, and people loved and supported her by people like Cory, Penoy, Drilon, Pangilinan, etc. And now, Penoy is bent on running after Corona because he is perceived as his enemy and Gloria’s boy. If Penoy is sincere, and I doubt if he is, he should also run after the people around him, some of whom have pending corruption charges, or have considerable wealth, and punish them for committing gross violations…As the saying goes, “Clean your backyard first before cleaning somebody else’s.” But he prefers to coddle them instead of punishing. That is selective justice….And for #11, this is a deja vu, I have been called worse than what you said “there is a clear lack of conscience on your part” when during Gloria’s time they were offended by my commentaries (Not in this blog)against her and Raul Gonzales. During that time, the DOJ under Gonzales was trying to locate my address. Thanks to the publisher/editor of the paper, nobody gave out my address..This time, I am also expecting some nasty words from Penoy’s blind followers, who are hell bent on protecting their idol for better or worse, for being critical to his vindictiveness, utter disregard of the rule of law and unpresidential demeanor.
“WOW more fun in the Philippines”.
Well, the Corona impeachment is a laudable move to cleanse the govt of misfits and grafters. I’d rather go ahead with it and see what happens, acquit or convict, depending on the arguments and evidence. The counterclaim by some who oppose it that others do it anyway is shallow. Let the axe fall where it may. Bato-bato sa langit ang tamaan huwag magalit! Kung dumating kay PNoy ang time na yan, so be it.
From what I see, Corona is a square peg in a round hole. As a midnite appointee of Arroyo, no amount of legalizing by his colleagues will deodorize his pungent status as CJ.
#12 so am i.
but practical does not mean you always have to live the life of a criminal to succeed.
Star 1542: Penoy is bent on running after Corona because he is perceived as his enemy and Gloria’s boy. If Penoy is sincere, and I doubt if he is, he should also run after the people around him
Well for one, Corona is not Aquino’s enemy. Corona is a roadblock in getting accountability out of Gloria. Aquino
There is nothing about Aquino’s boy or GMA’s boy. Its about what we need to do to correct our way of life.
Well, if you are in favor, now is the time. And from your reasoning, parang ayaw mo na mapanagutan ang mga may sala. You simply point it the other way, like i said, how Trapos says it: if everybody’s doing it…
And to correct you, NBI’s Gatdula (an Aquino appointee) was relieved due to charges made against him. So if i were you, magbabasa basa muna ako before generalizing.
Btw, does name calling makes you feel that your point is more correct? No one seems to call Gloria pandak or shorty so why do you do it do Aquino? Be fair, not unless you wish we call GMA as such.
missed a section on my response —
Well for one, Corona is not Aquino’s enemy. Corona is a roadblock in getting accountability out of Gloria. Aquino did say he did not agree that Corona should be CJ.
Many don’t agree with GMA’s insistance to appoint Corona.
But Aquino did let Corona be CJ since he took up Corona’s challenge (“watch what i will do”) and did you not watch that Corona permitted Gloria to wear the halo helmet at NAIA to leave the country via a TRO yun pala walang sakit tapos di pa pala nasatisfy yung requirements sa TRO?
We watched Corona, and please don’t be blind to know that Corona is protecting GMA.
In life you have to pick your battle, and right now, i believe Aquino is picking the right battle.
And if you fear that the people around him won’t be facing any charges, may panahon din sa kanila, as you said weather weather lang. In fact, by making sure we do a clean case against Corona, yung mga nasa paligid ni Aquino would have to think to say, teka baka kami din after matanggal sa puwesto. So if you look at the bigger picture, what we are doing is long term.
So right now, we should make GMA face her accusations, and not to let her escape it. Corona is the leader who almost made her escape.
@vonjovi2 oo nga magandang tanong yan. Bakit walang kotse?
To SNV and those with experience and knowledge, so prosecution can’t ask these intriguing questions from Corona himself, right?
And would it not be wise to have the SALN with the Ombudsman and the BIR moving forward so they can actually check?
P22.9M lang ang nahanap? Napaka liit yata nun. Natatawa lang siguro ang mga senators. Kailangan mag trabaho pa ang mga prosecutors. Mag hanap pa sila. Hindi uubra ito.
Don’t divert the issue, the subject is Corona. Focus people, the secret to success is constancy to purpose.
First Corona, break down Gloria’s entrenched defenses, then she will be more vulnerable.
Too much clutter and attempts at misdirection.
Fix your eyes on the price!
You can actually hit your target even without aiming, you use your perepheral vision, memorize the postion of the target, a trained mind and body can. Sometimes a millisecond advantage over the enemy can mean success or failure.
I personally will not say I’m better or can do a better job than the prosecution, they can do the job a lot better than me so I leave them to do so.
I’m learning some new skills kasi playing with my sons’ PS3, Battlefield Bad Company, Just Cause 2, Modern Warfare Black Ops, more, more, this is fun! Hehehe.
How I wish that Putot Gloria and her gangs of cohorts rot in jail for what they had done. But they should be convicted according to the rules of law and not by mob rule. So much so that Corona should be convicted according to law. However, the Articles of Impeachment against Corona are patently defective. Obviously the 188 signatories did not read the Articles. They were not ready for the trial as they were expecting there would be no trial. They were relying on their media exposure to humiliate Corona and Corona would just resign like what Maldita Gutierez did… They presented their evidence against Corona in public long before the trial began. It turn out Corona did not resign and they were caught with their pants down….Only two of the Articles are personal acts of Corona while the six are collective decisions of the majority of a collegiate body. If he would be found guilty in all six articles, all the justices voting for the majority are equally guilty…On the second article, it’s only about “Failure to file SALN.” No corruption and ill-gotten wealth was alleged. If he is found guilty for “Failure to file SALN,” then so should the entire judiciary, legislature and members of the executive branch. According to PCIJ report, not a single legislature and no member of Penoy Cabinet had filed the mandated annual SALN…The First Article is so vague…If Corona is found guilty by public opinion and mob rule, not by rule of law, the Philippines would be in a time capsule going back to the dark ages of Europe where a person accused of witchcraft were burned to death by the mob, or to the Deep South of the US, where blacks were hung by the supremacist KKK on false charges without trial…Rule of law should always prevail. We are in a generation where even the dogs and the cats are now protected by the rules of law….
I am not a PNoy/Aquino supporter, but, he’s got my back on this one… Spare me the dark ages of Europe, witchcraft, deep south incidents crap. That was then, this is now… This Corona is a corrupt SC judge, and so are the others not yet caught. He deserves to be made example that we do have justice in the Phils to see, if everything goes well…
#24 “false charges” will be proven when Corona is acquitted.
But you missed the difference in your examples with our current situation, even at the stake, Corona is given a chance to fight it out.
We could all have stormed Padre Faura and hanged or burned the CJ, but we did not.
Contrary to your misleading ideas, we are following the rule of law. For impeachment is found in our constitution.
Its Corona who ignored the law, when he volunteered himself to the CJ position when the law is clear, no appointments; and if needs be, only set OIC. Its the Supreme Court (as evident that the clerk of court need to ask permission from her “boss”) who hides the SALN under the disguise of being kidnapped. And now that we have seen the contents, you still think he fulfilled his SALN? You do know that by not filling up a document, especially a public document incompletely or dishonestly, you are exactly failing to file it.
Do not fool yourself into thinking that by prosecuting Corona we are making things worst. You should see that by prosecuting (but giving Corona the chance to defend himself) that we do follow the rule of law.
If it was up to mob rule, GMA would already be in jail right now and Corona’s properties would have been sequestered.
The issue of “competence” in hiding the SALN record of Corona was already a proof of “refraction and fogy “. There must be a reason “behind ” in the shady protocols, or making hard to the prosecutors to get and see the SALN of Corona. Good the expert Senator Drilon help the council to let atty. Vidal surrender the “very important document-SALN” of the family wealth, of the CJ… Later, it found out there were inconsistent in some of the amount or values of the properties. Now, the credibility was doubted already, and the defense describes it as ” fishing expedition “. If further proven, that there are untrue figures (SALN), then, the prosecutors are in more 55% or more already of finding the ” real or big fish-catch “..an analysis..
With this Corona impeachment, Penoy proved to be successful in many aspects:
1. He was successful in dividing the nation;
2. He was successful in instilling hatred in the hearts and minds of his supporters (e. g. Some are interpreting #24 with so much hatred. Try to re-read it and you will find that it doesn’t contain anything that would arose hatred.)
3. He was successful in diverting the attention of the nation from the most pressing issues such as hunger, uncontrolled rising of prices of oil and almost all goods and basic commodities, unemployment, criminality, assistance to Typhoon Sendong victims, uncontrolled labor export, and continuous sinking economy, among others.
4. Soon to be successful….Reversal of Supreme Court decision against Hacienda Luisita…
