My kalan:something simple, practical, and useful

Look what I found one day last February when I went home to our barrio in Guisijan, Laua-an, Antique.

I found this stove being sold for P150 by a barriomate in front of his house. He said he is the one making it. This is how it is when you use wood for fuel which they do in the province.

When you use charcoal, you can close the ‘door” to enclose the heat.

The next day, I went to the market and I saw this for P50. You put it on a stove to prevent the flames from smearing the kaldero.

It fitted my stove perfectly.

Pwede na magluto. Hindi madungis ang kaldero.

Di ba maganda? A real buy: the whole set for P200.

It’s light. You can also bring it for camping.

    this kalan is very practical, sa kamahalan ng LPG ngaun, very ideal po ito na paglagaan ng mga bulalo or pata gamit ang uling.

  2. Talaga, Coram. Hindi pa makalat. Pwedeng kahoy, pwedeng uling.

  3. Uy, Ellen, I want one… gosh, it’s nice and neat!!! 200 Pesos? Less than 4 euros??? Whoa, that’s even less than the cost of a sandwich where I sit… wow!

  4. In my next home visit, I’ll buy more from my barrio mate.

    The problem is the P50 thing because I just chanced upon it in the public market. I don’t know if the vendor would still be there because there are vendors who come from nearby barrios. But I’ll try to find her.

    Oy, bagay na bagay yan sa bahay-kubo ko sa bundok, hindi ako mauubusan ng gatong!

    Ellen, what is it made of? Parang makapal na metal ang tingin ko.

    Kailangan ko yan for camping, at pang-display sa harap ng kubo. 🙂

  7. Ellen, you mean to say the cost is not even 200 Pesos? Only either 150 pesos (less than 3 euros) or 50 pesos (less than 1 euro)??? Gosh, that’s even cheaper than a cup of capuccino where I sit… Just as Chi asked, what is it made of? It’s not only pretty, it looks efficiently cool. I would like to buy 3 or 4 even at 200 pesos each for my own personal use on my terrace… Apat sabay sabay na luto (and perhaps even for barbecuing something on one) Great party talking points pa!!! Uy, Ellen, I will ask my sister to contact you if it’s possible…. coz she’s coming to visit me hahahahah (hoping she doesn’t get stopped by customs thinking she’s carrying bombs or something)

  8. What I like is that it is unusual and looks efficiently cool — will be great party piece talking point… 😉

  9. And I have no problem with either charcoal or firewood so yesssss! Let’s support Filipino craftsmanship!!!!

    Ellen, if you will make this your export business, I’m ordering 3 to be shipped to the US. Please let me know how much.

    #8. Anna, you got my thoughts again! Inggit to death ang nga friends ko dito if I displayed that kalan. 🙂

    Sana meron mag-market nyan abroad, e kung anu-ano lang na klase ng kalan ang nakikita ko sa Asian stores…walang sinabi sa kalan ni Ellen. 🙂

    Ellen, paki balitaan kami once it is marketed in Manila, I will ask my nieces to buy some….itago at bibitbitin ko dito sa ‘merika sa ulit na uwi ko. 🙂

    @Anna & @Chi:

    I think it’s made of hard plastic. 😛
    Kidding aside, I’ve seen similar products before in tiangges (flea markets) selling between 3K to 6K pesos. Am not sure if they use the same materials. The one I saw is made of cast iron (I think).

  14. chi chi

    Mike….meron na ako na cast iron na kalan, uso sa bundok dito yan. Pero itong kay Ellen ay magaan lang daw, tsaka mas maganda ang design. 🙂

  15. Kakatuwa kayo. Di pwede yan sa Maynila. Hihintayin munang maluto yung nakasalang mo saka nanakawin pati ulam mo, yari, hehehe.

  16. Mike Mike

    @Toungue:
    Pwede naman dito sa Manila yan, dapat nga lang may nagbabantay na security guard. Siguraduhin mo lang na busog ang sikyo ha ne. 😛

  17. Mike….meron na ako na cast iron na kalan, uso sa bundok dito yan

    — Chi

    Ako din may cast iron na… Just that this is as Chi says, light, easily transportable and besides for the amount, you can have many of them functionning at the same time during a small garden party… Good party talking piece pa! 🙂
