Kahabag-habag ang mga namatay at nasaktan sa stampede na nangyari sa Ultra sa Pasig noong sabado ng umaga. Sila ay nandoon sa Ultra para manood at sumali sa Wowwowee, isang show ng ABS-CBN na hinu-host ni Willy Revillamie.
Habang sinusulat namin ito, sinasabi sa ulat na 79 ang patay at mas marami pa ang sugatan sa trahedya. Karamihan sa biktima ay mga matatanda.
Ayon sa mga narinig naming interview sa mga marami sa kanila ay nandoon na sa Ultra Miyerkules ng gabi para sa unang taon na anibersaryo ng Wowwowee. Marami sa kanila ay galing sa malayong lugar at may baon silang pagkain at inumin para hindi sila maalis sa pila. Marami raw kasing pinamimigay na premyo sa Wowwowwee at dahil sa hirap ng buhay, nagtitiyaga sila sa hirap at nagbabakasakaling maka-swerte.
Nang mga alas-sais raw ng umaga kahapon, sinabi raw ng guwardiya na magsimula nang mamigay ng tiket (na siyang gagamitin sa raffle). At ang pagka-intindi ng iba, magsisimula ng magpapasok. Doon raw nagsimula nagkabalyahan. Ang iba raw ay umakyat sa bakal na bakod. Sa sobrang siksikan ng tao, may mga natumba dahil pababa raw ang lugar. Nang matumba ang ilan, nagpatung-patungan. Ang iba ay nadaganan at ang iba naman ay natapakan.
Mabuti naman at humingi ng paumanhin si Willie Revillamie na mukhang shocked. Hindi ko kasi narinig kay Charo Santos-Concio, vice president for entertainment ang paghingi ng paumanhin. Sinabi lang niya nakikiramay sila sa mga biktima. At hindi naman raw nila ginusto ang nangyari. Gusto lang naman raw nila magpasaya ng tao. Siguro payo ng abogado kasi kapag humingi ng paumanhin ay parang inamin na rin nilang kasalanan nila.
Mahirap man aminin, hindi maa-aring walang kasalanan ang mga taga-Wowwowee sa nangyari. May pagkukulang sa pagsa-ayos ng mga tao. Sana hindi nila tatakasan itong responsibilidad para hindi rin mahirap para sa publiko ang makiramay sa kanila.
Ipinakita ang mga tambak na gamit ng mga nagpila doon at talagang nakabagbag damdamin. Mga gomang tsinelas, mga lumang sapatos, payong, mga plastic na grocery bag, mga recycled na bote ng tubig. Gamit ng mga mahihirap.
Ang nangyari sa Ultra ay salamin ng tunay na kalagayan ng bayan. Ang mga taong pumupila sa Wowwowwee ay mukha ng Pilipino na ngayon ay nabubuhay lamang sa pangarap dahil wala silang mahahawakan solido. Nandoon sila sa pangarap na may maitawid sa pangaraw-araw na pangangailangan.
Kaya kahit matatanda, na dapat ay magpahinga na lang at inaalagaan, ay nandoon para kahit paano ay baka kumita.

Nakapanlulunos ang nasaksihan nating trahedyang ito! while our “public servants” in Malacanyang continue to spend people’s money in luxury, our poor people are left out in the cold dreaming. The Philippines true picture.
Our hearts and prayers goes out to those who are bereaved and to those who had suffered physical pain.
1. Prayers (from us or the Bishops) help, but only to those who are doing the praying.
2. The people who died are not martyrs, they are victims. Whether they died senselessly or not depends on what happens next.
3. The people who go for these shows hoping to win the jackpot are not any more stupid than those of us who buy lottery tickets. More desperate maybe, but more stupid, no.
4. It’s not the fault of the people who were queuing up. They are already part of a crowd which no individual can control. A crowd has it’s own dynamics.
5. I don’t see how ABS-CBN can morally escape responsibility for selection of venue and crowd management. At the very least, there was a serious lapse in management competence and possible negligence. Same goes with the Pasig City and MMDA in terms of enforcing safety regulations.
6. Banning these gameshows (however inane and humiliating) is against the Constitution, but the networks have a responsibility to review their programming for their long-term (intended or unintended) effects on our society.
In so far as SeaGames & Pacquiao’s win was good for GMA from a ‘Bread and circuses’ standpoint, this one is not good for her. Tough luck, GMA.
For those in the middle class (or hold ‘middle-class values’), how will it affect their/our attitude towards the poor majority? Will it make us less self-absorbed or is it going to be more of ‘us vs them’ mentality?
Condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died.
Let this tragedy be an eye opener to this governtment/and our politician. Ang pagtaas ng piso ay hindi sukatan ng kaginhawahan sa buhay. Ang tunay na pamantayan ng matiwasay na pamumuhay ay ang pagkakaroon ng trabaho ng ating mamamayan. Ang magkaroon ng makakain sa hapag kainan. Maaaring bukas ang palitan ng dolyar kontra piso ay maging 45, subalit hindi ito nangangahulugan na bukas ay biglang magkakaroon ng mga trabaho ang masang Pilipino.

Unfortunately, no. A tragedy such as this can be avoided if proper crowd discipline is enforced. Ever watch a football game? In Europe, they are crazy about football but stampedes rarely happen, bacause they keep their wits about. In this case i will blame the show, they know how many people coming on the regular shows that they can estimate how many people are coming on that special day. They should have made arrangements to better cope with a bigger crowd. Those who maintain security of the place, maybe not trained to handle huge crowd and the will of these people to keep the dicipline in the queue.
No, i think this is just a case of demonstrating how stupid people can get at a terrifyingly heavy cost of lives.
I also believe that ABS-CBN bears responsiblity for the tragedy. It cannot be extinguished by a simple “Hindi namin ginusto ito”.
They encouraged people to come without providing for their convenience and safety.

Kung dito sana ginamit ng mga pulis ang CPR (CALIBRATED PREEMPTIVE RESPONSE) ni GMA, hindi sana nangyari ito. Dito sa mga ganitong pagkakataon dapat ginagamit ang CPR. Sinabi ng taga ABS-CBN na humingi sila ng assistance sa mga authorites para sa security, bakit hindi binigyan ng CPR? Dahil ba hindi ito rally ng oposisyon. People have reached up to 30,000. Kung yung mga mga 100-200 katao ang mag-converge eh andun agad ang mga pulis bakit ito umabot ng 30,000, eh hindi in-apply ang CPR.
DESPERATE CONDITION- Yes, most Filipinos are getting desperate. Imagine after the incident na nagkamatayan na eh, HANDA PA RING PUMILA AT MAKAPASOK SA ULTRA ang iba dahil sa pag-aakalang tuloy ang game show. Walang nakakaalam sa bagay o ano man pangyayari sa ating buhay kaya dapat na maging handa tayo sa lahat na oras. Ang ibig kung sabihin,’wag natin kalimutan ang Mahal na Dios na mag pasalamat sa kanya sa ibinibigay sa atin na biyaya at mag dasal tayo bago mag umpisa sa mga gawain pang araw-araw na sana walang mangyari sa maghapon o lahat na oras, mag hingi tayo na kapatawaran sa ating ginawa na kasalanan o mayroon man.
Huwag tayo lumayo sa kanya. Lumapit tayo sa kanya dahil siya lang ang nakakaalam kung ano ang mangyayari sa atin sa lahat na oras.

Sa atin naman na kapwa mahihirap wag mag asa na lang sa sinasabi na instance money o mga programa na tungkol sa pera.
Mag trabaho tayo nag tulungan para sa ikabubuti ng ating pamilya wag iasa sa iba dapat kosa tayo gumalaw para hindi naman tayo mahirapan ang mga anak natin ang nahihirapan kung tayo ay patamad-tamad..

Bakit natin isisisi sa gobyerno ang nangyari na stampede sa ULTRA? Pag mahirap ba ang isang tao ay gobyerno ba agad ang ating sisihin? Hindi ata tama ang ganoong kalakaran dahil sa mga sandaling sila ay nagniniig, ang mga hiyaw o alulong man lang ay hindi marinig sa kanila. Pero pag kumalampag na ang kanilang sikmura, ang daming tao ang kanilang pinupurwisyo.
Ang pagiging mahirap ng isang tao ay kagagawan rin niya. Tubong mahirap ako mula sa probinsiya ng Negros Oriental pero di gawain naming ang humihiyaw at mandamay. Sa totoo lang, kapabayaan ng isang indibiduwal kung bakit siya ay naghihirap. Kung di pa niya kayang bumuhay ng isang pamilya, di dapat mandamay siya ng ibang buhay.

Negosyo lang iyan at pagpapaligsahan upang makuha ang pinakamarami at pinakamahal na advertizers nang hindi talaga iniisip kung paanong maihahango sa hirap ang milyon-milyong nagugutom na mga Pilipino.
Nakakaiyak kasi halos kapanabay ng nangyari ay ang balita na bilyon-bilyong salapi ng bayan ang ninanakaw ng mga buktot sa pamahalaan, na dapat ay napunta sa mga mahihirap na magsasaka at sa pagbibigay ng hanapbuhay sa maraming mahihirap at mangmang. Your suggestion of broadcasting documentaries and learning-oriented programs is an excellent one. I also wish government would sponsor this kind of mass media-based education in a big way. If only more people would take a serious interest in educational matters like you, i’m confident that the Filipino will have a better future. However, not all telenovelas are the same. ‘Jewel in the Palace’, which is also very popular here in Singapore, narrates the history of Korea, it’s people and culture, while at the same time being also entertaining.
On the concept of ‘Geniocracy’, i’m against selective democracy of any kind, whether based on intelligence, diplomas or economic status. Kung ang masa ay nagkamali sa pagpili kay Erap, ang mga middle class naman (kasama na ako doon) ang nagkamali sa pagsuporta kay GMA. Basic intelligence alone is not a guarantee of good judgement. I’m probably not a modern mother because we’ve only had cable TV this year.
My children are allowed to watch TV only on Saturday afternoons and they can’t even do it because they have so many extra-curricular activities on Saturday that they don’t have the material time to watch TV anymore.
My husband and I encourage them to read and read they do – there are already so many horror stories and bad news in the newspapers that they read; seeing them depicted live on TV seems a waste of precious time.

i seldom watch TV because time doesn’t permit. My children watch Discovery Channel and how interesting this channel is and i recommend this to everybody who has time to spare in front of the tube. I read a lot, my favorite passtime along with sports. I grew up watching the original “kabayan” Gerry Geronimo and his “Ating Alamin”. My observation is that it had somehow moulded me into a different person than those who spend time reading comics and watching telenovelas. ‘Geniocracy’ to me, however, is not the answer. It is not even fair. How can one even say it’s democracy if it is selective.

I have yet to know a true blooded scientist who’s involved in any misdemeanor. Scientists/Inventors have visions – this should be a prequalification on our quest for leaders. We won’t be able to blog here if not for these visionaries. They don’t have the inclination to corrupt. Most of the time, they’re satisfied already by the honor to be appreciated on the beauty of their realized visions.

Anino, i appreciate your dilemma which is the dilemma of every Filipino. it’s also good that you have been giving this matter much thought. However, the fact is there is no formula when it comes to who would be the deserving leaders. We already tried the brilliant Ferdinand Marcos (a certified genius), the sincere Cory Aquino, the strategically minded Ramos, the supposedly caring Erap and the technocratic Arroyo with well known results. Intelligence is no guarantee of character, and as we’ve seen in the ULTRA tragedy, good-intentions without competence also kills. The leaders we put up reflect the values of our people so coming up with a leader has to be a joint exercise which we have to refine everytime we make a mistake. One of these days our people will get it right.
In the meantime, entrusting leadership to technocrats or any intellectual elite is no panacea. It was the technocrats (Virata, Jobo et. al) who went along with the IMF to plunge us into our worst crisis in 1983. In the US, it was the ‘bright boys’ of Kennedy led by Robert Mcnamara, who got the US stuck in Vietnam. During Clinton’s time, Robert Rubin masterfully handled the US Economy, but at the same time, also through the IMF, wrecked Russia’s economy. The Neocon thinkers, who fancy themselves as a chosen elite, engineered the ongoing debacle of Iraq, 180,000 lives and counting. All of these, one could say, are well-intentioned schemes of intelligent men gone horribly wrong. Plato’s ideal of Philosopher King(s) is not for our time.

The 11 Major industries initiative was modeled after the Korean Chaebols, but it degenerated into Crony Capitalism, which to me, is a sign of character failure, both of the President himself and his business associates. Having said that, it’s true that some scientists were used, harassed, coerced, tortured, murdered for the knowledge that they have. And who did these? The Establishment! I was privileged to have watched the documentary “Dangerous Life” [or Lives?]. On their last moments in the Palace, Marcos, in utmost disgust, threw a glass of wine/water into the face of Imelda. Whether this really did take place, and whatever was the reason, we can only speculate.

We agree on a lot of matters, but i have always believed in the basic equality of all human beings and the corresponding principle of ‘one-person, one-vote’. Inequality and unequal relations is at the heart of our problems and schemes that add to our society’s stratification, no matter how well intentioned, is contrary to the direction i wish to take.

I know you’re as busy as most of us here, so allow me this last short note on the matter.
It’s the ultimate desire of a Geniocratic government to enable everyone to vote, and even beyond that. The first batches of competent leaders that will come out of this will take upon themselves the responsibility to better our lives – food, shelter, education, opportunity. Such that, as time goes by, everybody will reach a level of conciousness much higher than it is today.
The ‘discrimination’ to vote will only occur on its first stages.

I would like to first say that I love the Philippines and that I will soon retire there. I am spanish castilla and my wife is filipina for 18 years. I am truly sorry for what happened at the Ultra. The stamped could have been avoided if security and planning was implemented in the first place. The logistics were just not given consideration by the shows operators. How tragic. To those that are left behind to grieve their loved ones who are gone. I can only say that God himself has them in his bosom. The moment they were crushed God opened up the heavens and brought them into the comfort of his arms where they now rest. As I sit here I get frustrated wondering how the shows producers did not anticipate a large influx of crowds to attend. I mean if you have hundreds waiting outside the studio waiting for a chance of winning cash or a home can you imagine at the stadium. Well we did, and look what happened. Untimely death. God Bless those who are grieving those gone. But at least let us believe with some comfort in our hearts and hope in the future that they also will one day be celebrating eternal life with our Lord Jesus and then and only then will the tears disappear.
