The Trillanes phenomenon (2)

A close look at the tally sheets of local absentee voting for the police, military and government personnel will show that the highest number of votes among the senatorial candidates went to Panfilo Lacson, Gregorio Honasan, Francis Escudero, and Antonio Trillanes IV.

Of the four, only Escudero of the Genuine Opposition, is not from the military.

Lacson, Honasan, and Trillanes are all graduates of the Philippine Military Academy. Lacson and Honasan had their careers in the police and the army, respectively, before going into politics. It’s not surprising that they enjoy the support of the men in uniform.

It should not be surprising also for members of the police and military to be supporting Trillanes, being one of them. Except that Trillanes is under detention and on trial for coup d’etat and other charges related to what is known as the Oakwood mutiny on July 27, 2003.

The military leadership was not exactly subtle about their hostility to the young navy officer, who was the spokesman of a group of idealistic officers who exposed rampant irregularities in the AFP. Not content with giving out verbal instructions to vote 12-0 in favor of Team Unity senatorial bets, Army chief Romeo Tolentino issued an order to tear down Trillanes posters in the vicinity of army camps. That Trillanes is among the senatorial race leaders means that many of the policemen and soldiers found a way to support Trillanes through their votes.

After the release of the Pulse Asia/ABS-CBN exit polls, relatives and close friends of Trillanes got several messages from active military officers asking them to convey to the detained senatorial bet that they voted for him. Some of those maybe messages of opportunism from those who now recognize Trillanes’ political importance.

But it’s easy to believe that the bulk of the more than 11 million votes that Trillanes is supposed to have garnered (35.4 percent, according to Pulse Asia/ABS-CBN nationwide exit poll) could be from the men in uniform and members of their families.

Trillanes rated well all over the country (except of course in Maguindanao and other places where normal elections didn’t take place), even in places like Lanao del Sur (incomplete results placed him in No. 5) . The police and military are institutions with presence all over the country.

Malacañang and the military must be regretting the day they allowed Trillanes to register as a voter on Dec. 10, 2006 which paved the way to his filing his certificate of candidacy on Feb. 6, 2007.

Trillanes registered as an independent candidacy for senator but found his way in the opposition ticket when political opportunism left a slot open. That put him in the big league in the electoral battle that was seen as a referendum on the increasingly unpopular administration of Gloria Arroyo.

Inclusion in the Genuine Opposition ticket was a major boost to his candidacy but it was still handicapped by his detention, lack of access to media, and lack of money.

Almost everybody, even the opposition leaders, underestimated his chances of winning. Which was both good and bad. Good because he was spared the demolition operation like the one Malacañang unleashed on another GO candidate Alan Cayetano. It was only a week before the campaign, when Trillanes dramatically moved up to number 15 in the survey, that the administration started their black propaganda. Defense Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane made the silly allegation that the detained officer is being supported by the New People’s Army.

Bad because it made fundraising very difficult. Who of the businessmen would want to contribute to someone who was seen as having a very little chance of winning?

In his post-election message posted in the Magdalo blogsite, Trillanes revealed that “In fact, by the first week of March, when our resources were about to be depleted, our campaign had been practically sustained and carried forth by an intense spirit of volunteerism all over the country and from all walks of life.”

Trillanes’ candidacy is phenomenal in the sense that it defied all traditional campaign practices. It is said that the more hands you shake and babies you kiss, the more votes you get. He was unable join campaign sorties because he was in prison.

It is said you have to have a budget of a low of P250 million and a high of P500 million to win a Senate seat. I doubt if Trillanes had P50 million for his campaign.

It is said that an endorsement by the Iglesia ni Cristo increases your chance of winning. He was not in the list endorsed by INC.

It is said that in a campaign, one has to be a pacifist and should take a non-controversial position on issues. In all his media interviews, Trillanes traced the root of the country’s problems to Gloria Arroyo’s lack of electoral mandate.

Unlike Honasan who apologized for this participation in past coup attempts, Trillanes refused to apologize for what happened in Oakwood in 2003 and cited a provision in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights that rebellion is justified if the government is working against the interest of the people.

He has categorically said that if there’s an impeachment trial against Arroyo, he will vote for her ouster.

Television has become the battleground for the hearts and minds of voters. Candidates pour hundreds of millions of pesos on TV ads to increase their name recall on voters. Trillanes didn’t have TV ads until Sen. Jamby Madrigal came along and sponsored their placement in the last four weeks to Election Day. Even with that, it was no match to the TV ads of administration candidates Prospero Pichay and Joker Arroyo.

Trillanes acknowledged that the high media exposure he got in the last three weeks of the campaign after he was granted by the court media access was a big boost to his senatorial bid. Never mind that he was not camera savvy or glib in TV interviews. He was clear and forceful in his views and the voters liked what they saw and heard.

The denial by the Makati Regional Trial Court of his request for bail to campaign actually did him good, because it underscored his persecution by the Arroyo government. The denial of bail became glaring in the light of the granting of bail to Honasan, who is facing trial for allegations that he was the mastermind of the Oakwood mutiny and Nur Misuari, candidate for Sulu governor, who is imprisoned for staging a rebellion where a number of persons were killed.

Remarks of Malacañang officials indicate that they still can’t accept Trillanes’ senatorial win. Gloria Arroyo was asked by a correspondent of Asian Wall Street Journal about it and her reply was, “It’s too close to call.”

In his post- election message, Trillanes said, “I admit that we still have a long way to go before we can claim electoral victory and, as I have said before, I expect this administration to cheat.”

He asked his supporters to continue being vigilant “to ensure that your collective will is respected and upheld.”

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said even if Trillanes wins, it is doubtful if he could serve as senator because of the pending cases against him.

Arroyo and her officials still don’t get it. The 11 million votes for Trillanes is a resounding protest vote against her illegitimate presidency.

Every vote cast for Trillanes was an expression of hope that change is still possible in this country. Those who voted for him were responding to his message at the GO miting de avance that the May 14 election “ay huling mapayapang paraan para matanggal ang mga tiwali sa gobyerno para tayo maka-usad.” (This is our last chance for a peaceful way to remove the undesirables in the government so that we can progress).

If there is still a shred of care for the country left in Arroyo and her minions, they better heed the message of the people.

Please allow me to post a portion of Antonio Abaya’s column:

    TRILLANES TSUNAMI

Between the last SWS survey that came out on April 28 and Election Day on May 14, the largely invisible Trillanes, perhaps without even intending to, has caused an Intensity 4 tremor below the surface of Philippine politics. Whether this quake will cause a tsunami that will sweep across the land, or merely break up in the shallows, remains to be seen and will depend largely on how he plays his cards when he is allowed to by his jailers.

Will he be the New Magsaysay that Filipinos, especially the middle class, have been desperately searching for? Or, being now a threat to the ambitions of several high profile politicians (including Gloria Macapagal Arroyo), will he become the New Ninoy Aquino, who will wind up dead on arrival even before he can make his maiden speech?

What can I say, Trillanes is a phenomenon indeed!

Even the and Lakas, pagmasdan natin ang kanilang magiging kilos. Slowly but surely, maglilipatan yan. It happened in almost all administration when the ship is already sinking, parang dagang magtatalunan ang mga yan. Mismo!

  7. Sinabi mo pa Chi. Biglang baligtad ang ungas. Remember the article I shared with you guys and my reply at sabihan pa akong makitid daw when I berated him for calling the GO candidates “gago!” Nakikisawsaw na!

They should not be allowed to mix in the new breed of Senators na may paninindigan. Out with the trapo na.

  9. Basta ako, ang tingin ko sa mga pangyayaring ito ay some Act of God. Pasok din diyan si Alan Cayetano because of his strong faith in God.

Three opinions adding to Trillanes’ phenomenon:

    1. William Esposo – Philippine Star:
The phenomenal 9th place showing of detained officer Trillanes in the ABS-CBN-Pulse Asia Exit Poll clearly validates the people’s willingness to take an extreme route in order to seek relief from the issues against the GMA regime. Now an icon that frontally challenges the integrity and credibility of the present regime, Trillanes outpaced the other highly advertised and high-profile candidates despite the fact that he had not been allowed to go out and campaign.

    2. Tony Lopez – Manila Times:
I will concede the elections are credible if the navy renegade Trillanes makes it as a senator.

    3. Benito Lim, a UP professor:
Our young voters look at Trillanes and Escudero as the model for future politicians. They are very clear with their platform, they do not like President Arroyo, they question her legitimacy, they believe she is politicking instead of doing her job.

Hindi nawawala kahit saan ang mga oportunista. Mabilis lumipat ng bangka!

We’ve seen and heard Trillanes here (U-tube and pnotos) at Ellenville, and I can honestly say that he’s a pricipled guy, ‘can not be bought’ and will remain to be an officer and a gentleman!

    Way to go, Sonny!

  13. Chabeli Chabeli

It is true that fundraising was “very difficult” for Sonnny Trillanes. Indeed, “Who of the businessmen would want to contribute to someone who had very little chance of winning?”

I remember making phone calls until the very end asking for contributions & almost all the replies I got was “sure winner ba yan” ? It was quite frustrating because I realized that very few will gamble or take a chance even if it is for the good. That was the reality. A few days ago I got a call from one of those who declined to give a contribute to the campaign kitty of Sonny Trillanes. Surprisingly, he/she told me that if Trillanes wanted anything, he/she would want to help. I said, “it’s too late na yata for that. You should have taken the stand when you had to.”

What actually attracted me to Sonny Trillanes is his no-nonesence style. He was candid & straight to the point. He didn’t mince is words. Whatever it is he said, I liked it. Each time he let out his thoughts, it was like he gave HOPE.

  14. Chabeli Chabeli

I listened to an analyst on TV saying that he doubted that Sonny Trillanes would make it as Senator, including Alan Cayetano. He said Gloria would not permit that to happen. As a matter of fact, he said, they will cheat big time just to remove Trillanes & Cayetano from the Magic 12.

I, therefore, ask, is Gloria ready to go against the mandate given by the millions of voters who voted for Trillanes & Cayetano ? Better yet, will the millions of voters who voted for Trillanes & Cayetano make their voices heard on the streets should this happen ?

  15. chi chi

    Hahahah!

    Chabeli,

It’s too late for those who wanted to make small and big contributions for Trillanes campaign.

Thank you for letting us know this man, Sonny Trillanes, thru your blog.

  16. chi chi

“I, therefore, ask, is Gloria ready to go against the mandate given by the millions of voters who voted for Trillanes & Cayetano ?”

Not this time, Chabeli. Not this time!

    Chi & Chabeli;
Yeah! It’s too late for those who want to make small and big campaign contribution for Trillanes.

  18. Chabeli Chabeli

You’re right, Chi, “not this time”. Gloria’s machinery meant nothing when she was faced w/ the people’s vigilance.

The political arena has indeed changed. This elections proved that you don’t have to have money to win.

On another note, what a feeling to watch the proclamation of Fr. Ed Panlilio (of Pampangga). That is a clear case of of good will triumph over evil ! Yari si Mikey Arroyo.

This song is heartily dedicated to Tianak and her minions, especially Bunye who commented (Trillanes who?):

    “I, I, I who have NOTHING!
    I, I, I who have NO ONE!
Believe Me, that when I say…( pls. continue, I forgot the lyrics alreadi, he, he, he!)

Ellen, you’ve played a great part …Thanks to you!

Let’s not forget, Alan too. He’s putting up a good fight. Matapang din at vocal na vocal talaga!
I’m proud of this guy too!

TRILLANES FOR PRESIDENT SA 2010!!!!!! MABUHAY KA.

  21. chi chi

    Chabeli,

Now, who’s saying “walang papalit” kay Gloria?! Ang daming sumulpot na ‘ung uns’ to replace her! They make Blinky Tianak looks even more pathetic and inutile!

  22. chi chi

    Yes, Elvira.

Soon, Blinky will wake up with NOTHING and NO ONE by her side.

The end will be very, very lonely for the damned tiny lady of EK!

  23. chi chi

    Etnad,

Kapos ang pera ng GO to field bets in the local level. Also, I think that there’ll be a dramatic change in the house of tongressmen. Let’s see kung ano ang pakulo nila this time. They won’t take for granted our vigilance this time around, kundi ay masusunog silang lahat sa loob ng tongreso!

If there’s any group that Sonny owes bigtime, it was media, who helped deliver his messages and raised the voters’ awareness of him, some even had to sacrifice personal comforts to make sure he made the primetime news, late night news, public affairs specials, or even the hourly newsbreaks. What Sonny cannot afford to pay, the stations gave him for free. Even radio commentators had done him a lot.

Blogs like these also were instrumental in spreading the word – the loud ones and those whispered. The websites, too.

And of course, our own Ellen Tordesillas.

    ————

Ecstatic! That’s the best word I could use to describe the outpouring during the proclamation of Among Ed Panllio. Pampangueños were very emotional during that moment and people in my house were, too. Many people who were watching from across the country couldn’t help but envy them. I guess Camarines Sur folks still hoped Mabulo could slay the alien wanting to be their leader. Well, they still can.

  25. chi chi

Oopps, nalimutan no na pasalamatan ang media. Thanks Tongue for the reminder.

Sa media na tumulong kay Trillanes, Thank you very much!

  26. Chabeli Chabeli

Yes, Ms. Ellen Tordesillas, should be commended for helping Sonny Trillanes, but, above all, for not giving up the fight despite the odds; for inspiring most of us to be vigilant & to protect democracy !

Mabuhay po kayo, Ms. Ellen !

Never again should we let our guard down until this whole election period is over. We must bear in mind that the enemy is sly.

According to Ernie Maceda, the opposition fielded 144 candidates in the congressional level. As you are aware, GO/UNO is a hastily put up group primarily to carry the senatorial bets of the opposition. They don’t have built in advantage to form strong line up in the locals because of logistics. Unlike candidates of Kampi and Lakas who are promised of millions including the pork barrel of the incumbents, those who are identified with the opposition are scrounging for funds, a tremenduous drawback. We understand that Mrs. Arroyo will cling to the congressmen to avoid impeachment for the third time and rightly so, busog na busog ang kanilang congressional candidates.

Survival is the name of the game for Mrs. Arroyo.

  31. Esperon’s take on Trillanes win GMANews.TV:

As far as Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon is concerned, a win by Genuine Opposition senatorial bet, ex-Navy Lieutenant Senior Grade Antonio Trillanes IV, could at least minimize, if not eradicate, disgruntled soldiers from resorting to unconstitutional means in effecting changes in government.

Read his and Ebdane’s statements carefully. Mukhang they are up to something.

  32. Chi: “After the release of the Pulse Asia/ABS-CBN exit polls, relatives and close friends of Trillanes got several messages from active military officers asking them to convey to the detained senatorial bet that they voted for him. Some of those maybe messages of opportunism from those who now recognize Trillanes’ political importance.”
    *****

Believe you me, Chi, I got the same message from some military guys saying they are for Trillanes knowing that I have been promoting Trillanes in Japan as my contribution to the betterment of the Philippines.

It surely was a good feeling coming from these people who were kind of antagonistic before as when we protested against the plundering of Philippine patrimonies in Japan in 2004 when the Pandak tried to get rid of the ambassador’s residence to add to her fund campaign then.

Now, I have stronger faith in God because of Sonny Trillanes. His being able to surmount his great ordeals in this election and being able to get to the Magic 12 san ll the funfare is no doubt an Act of God.

The Midget should be warned that “God cannot be mocked!” She should not try, for she is going to reap what she has sowed.

  33. chi chi

Tapos ay sasabihin niya na “should Trillanes or any other candidate lose, they should also accept their fate wholeheartedly.”

Why, dahil pipilitin ninyong dayain si Trillanes? There’s a lot in between lines of Assperon’s utterances! They themselves don’t know what to make out of Trillanes strong showing and eventual victory!

DOUBLE- EDGED statements from an asshole!

  34. Ellen:

Esperon should better shut his mouth or he takes the wrath of heaven upon himself and his loved ones. He should realize by now that this phenomenal victory of Trillanes is an Act of God that no one can thwart even with the use of their guns as when they eliminate those pollwatchers trying hard to make this election clean.

They should allow nature to take its course, and hear the Voice of God who must have prompted the people to cast their ballots for Trillanes and his fellow GOs whom God knows are willing and able to do as He now bids.

It is an Act of God. No doubt about that! Bukas nga magpa-fasting ako ulit to thank God for this victory of our favorite candidates lalo na itong si Sonny Trillanes.

I love this guy really for the opportunity he has given me to campaign for him within the bounds of the law of God and of men. I have no doubt he is going to be the kind of candidate we are hoping and looking for. God bless him!

  36. chi chi

“Think Again” before voting for Trillanes.

No comparison as far as I am concerned. Trillanes is Trillanes, nag-iisa iyan! Mas gusto ko si Trillanes because he did not resort to namecalling. He stuck on issues, and that was good. Eye-opener pa nga because we know for sure kung ano-ano ang mga kahayupang ginagawa ni Mr. & Mrs. Pidal and cohorts.

CONCEDE! CONCEDE! CONCEDE! Hoy Pandak talo na kayo!

BTW, we invite all Filipinos based in Japan to join the rally at the Philippine Embassy on May 22 from 7 pm to protest against the extrajudicial killings with the pollwatchers for Kabataan as the new victims plus iyong kay JayJay, etc. Isasama na rin namin ang pandaraya sa eleksyong ito as the sins of this bogus administration. The rally will have more Japanese protesters I believe.

  38. chi chi

I’m sure, EK’s war room discussions centers on their plans and strategy on what to do about Trillanes!

What you should do in EK is to translate this “unexplainable” happening as “this is what the high heavens and pinoys want, and nothing EK can do about it”

Ibabalik ko kay Blinky Tianak, Oinky Ipdye, Assperon, Ebdane, Gunggong G and Abalolos ito: “SHOULD TRILLANES WIN, THEY SHOULD ACCEPT HIS FATE WHOLEHEARTEDLY.”

  39. Funny, Chi, but these guys have been quoting us in their speeches. Halatang nagbabasa ng Ellen’s blog! 😛

This election is turning out to be a ray of hope. Although there were a lot of untoward incidents before, during and after the elections, if the trend continues, we will have new faces in key positions of our government. Trillanes’ win will be a great addition to the senate. I do not care about what the tiyanak and the hemorrhoids are saying, I care about what the country says. The peoples’ mandate should be followed. This is democracy. Unfortunately for the past six years, we had tyrants running our country. These tyrants think that if they can decree and force people to follow what they want, they call this good governance. But if a government is lopsided and the people feel suppresed, oppressed and they do not see any wholehearted interest in their welfare by these so called leaders, they know. Now the people have spoken. Even if the oppressors operated with their arrogance and intimidation in making sure that their candidates won, the people made their point and loud! It was only in the areas where tiyanak’s money, military presence and where its people had sheer ignorance of the voting process( like in Maguindanao)that the tiyanak’s candidates won. The message is LOUD and CLEAR, WE DO WANT WANT THIS ADMINISTRATION ANYMORE! WE WANT LEADERS WHO DO NOT SERVE JUST A HANDFUL OF PRIVILEGED CITIZENS! WE WANT CHANGE. TIYANAK, DON’T YOU GET it ???????????

    PSB:

    Still LOUDER and CLEARER…

MAJORITY NEVER WANTED YOU TIANAK…FROM THE VERY BEGINNING!

and still UP TO HIGH HEAVENS….

    ALIS NA D’YAN!!!!!!! TSUPI!!!

She cannot thwart an Act of God! Baka matuluyan siya—papuntang Mandaluyong, sa loob!

  48. Sabi nga, “Whom God wishes to destroy, He first makes mad.”

“As far as Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon is concerned, a win by Genuine Opposition senatorial bet, ex-Navy Lieutenant Senior Grade Antonio Trillanes IV, could at least minimize, if not eradicate, disgruntled soldiers from resorting to unconstitutional means in effecting changes in government.”

Tahimik lang iyong mga sundalo but now that they know that the people can no longer tolerate the Malacanang cheat, e pihado kakampi na sila sa mga kababayan nilang galit na!

Trillanes!!! We feel good, right? yeheyyyy!
Trillanes!

  52. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

  54. You bet. O ano? Papayagan ninyo ba ito? Majority ng mga boto 8-1-3 or 8-2-2 in favor of GO maski sa Visayas. Zamboanga is Erap country, kaya kapag nadaya ang GO doon, alam natin may daya. Cotabato and Bukidnon hindi din TUta country according to my friends there. Kaya kapag lumitaw na nanalo doon ang TUta you know for sure, daya.

Pwe! Nababoy na ang Alma Mater nila!
