Open letter to my friends

In countries with stable political parties that offer alternative policies and programs, responsible voters take time to study the platforms of competing parties. But in the Philippines, this is a futile exercise. Here the platforms are meaningless documents usually crafted by paid campaign strategists who try to please everyone with glittering ambiguities. They do not tell us what the candidates intend to do but only what they think we want to hear.
Let us not delude ourselves that the inclusion of a few good men will make a difference in a trapo-dominated senate. I therefore base my choice on what trends the candidates symbolize. This is how, after the elections, political analysts will interpret their victory or defeat. Do they represent the status quo, or the process of system change? Do they stand for things as they are, or things as they ought to be?
I will vote for ANTONIO TRILLANES and GREGORIO HONASAN because they represent a break from traditional politics. Both are in jail, accused of trying to oust a regime of dubious legitimacy and obvious venality.
Trillanes is a young man whose reputation is not built on the names of famous ancestors. He does not belong to a political dynasty. Neither is he a showbiz personality. Born a year before Marcos declared martial law, he was barely 15 when the dictatorship fell. Presumably inspired by the heroic role of the military rebels in the overthrow of Marcos, he entered the PMA and graduated cum laude in 1995. He later studied in UP where he obtained a master’s degree in public administration, writing his thesis while in prison.
As a navy officer Trillanes rose to the rank of Lieutenant Senior Grade (the equivalent of Captain in the army). He fought the Abu Sayyaf in Mindanao and commanded a team that rescued the survivors of M/S Princess of the Orient. But he gained national prominence as the leader of the Oakwood mutiny. For this, the Joker of Team Unity denigrates him as “the poster boy of rebellion.”
But Oakwood was more of a demonstration than a rebellion. A coup in the proper sense of the word aims at grabbing power and installing a junta. Coup plotters go for the jugular, not hold out in a five-star hotel. The Magdalo boys merely wanted to express their aversion for a wicked government and expose the corruption and incompetence of the AFP high command. After they made their point, they laid down their arms to avert bloodshed.
Capt. Trillanes sacrificed his military career to run for the senate in order to keep alive the struggle for reforms. He speaks for the men in uniform who wish to bring back honor to their profession and transform the AFP from a defender of elite rule to an agent of social change.
Those who remember my lectures or read my articles in 1986-87 might wonder why in the coming elections I am supporting two candidates with a military background. In the civil society movement I have always been identified with the anti-militarist wing. In 1986, while people were ecstatic in their adulation for Gringo, I expressed strong reservations about “politicians in uniform.” At that time I saw them as a threat to democracy.
I have since discarded the myth that EDSA 1 restored democracy. What it restored was oligarchy with a democratic façade. I have also come to realize that civilian supremacy is utterly devoid of meaning where the civilian trapos are able to corrupt the generals and use the military to preserve an illegitimate, graft-ridden and repressive regime.
A closer reexamination of that period led me to see the coup attempts of 1987 and 1989 in a different light. I now understand why the RAM officers felt betrayed. They obeyed President Cory Aquino when she ordered them back to the barracks because they were assured that her government would institute reforms in the AFP. They submitted several recommendations, but these were all ignored. On military affairs, Cory listened only to Fidel Ramos and other conservative generals.
Critics argue that military men have no business telling the civilian authorities what to do. The military is supposed to be non-political. But a review of history shows that the AFP and its predecessors have always served the political function of protecting the landlords and capitalists. The military’s political neutrality is a fiction. The military is either partisan for the elite or partisan for the people.
RAM set a new trend in the armed forces. Led by Col. Honasan, they questioned the legitimacy of the Marcos regime. Had they blindly followed civilian authority, the dictatorship would have survived. This trend continues to inspire the young officers to reflect on the missions their men are asked to risk their lives. In a regime like GMA’s, I have more confidence in these thoughtful soldiers than in the star-spangled thugs atop the “chain of command” as guardians of democracy and human rights
Soldiers are citizens, too. They have more right than the IMF-World Bank advisers and the foreign investors to propose reforms in our economy and society. They have as much right as any citizen of this republic to denounce the performance of evil, to protest against repression, electoral frauds, and diversion of funds to the pockets of some generals.
A vote for Honasan and Trillanes is a vote against the trapos and the system of elite rule.

Exactly why right-thinking soldiers should do everything to make Trillanes win! Mananatili ba silang alipin-saguiguilid ni Tianak at Assperon, o maging tulay ng pagbabago sa kinasusuklamang palakad ni Ginang Pidal sa mismong sektor na kanilang kinaaniban?

Thank you very much for the open letter, Dr. Nemenzo. It’s enlightening and answered all my silent questions. The Professor is one of the very few personalities whose opinions I don’t dare doubt.
The letter of former up President Nemenzo is indeed a big boost to the legitimacy of why Trillanes in seeking an elective position. As a soldier, he has all the rights as an ordinary citizen and clamor for a change in governance. Similar to what I have written in another thread, he wants to be heard but the AFP leadership is denying him of his rights to be heard. But with the recent decision of a judge for him to be granted media access, it’s getting better for Trillanes’ candidacy inspite of continuing efforts to put him down.
I wish those known personalities who share the same opinion with Dr. Nemenzo as to why we should go for Trillanes would come out in the open, too, and endorse this brave young non-trapo candidate.
A mock election in Bacolod City recently conducted by Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) show that detained military officer Antonio Trillanes IV landed in the 11th spot, even ahead of TU Michael Defensor with eight GO candidates dominating said mock election. It was on that occasion that Sen. Mar Roxas remarked that the mock polls conducted is “reflective of a general discontent and a desire for improvement. It is also the reflection of the people’s views and a reflection on the candidates.”
Had Trillanes been given media access very much earlier, he could be well ahead in the survey as more people would have known his advocacy far and wide. It is clear now that those who are going to vote for Trillanes are those who are discontented with the present administration. Voting Trillanes means trusting him to be a vehicle for the much needed change.
People with good sense and who make good use of the intelligence and talents God has bestowed upon them does not need the recommendation of Prof. Nemenzo to know that Sonny Trillanes is no trapo. It sure is nice, though, to hear such endorsement as this by the professor.
All mock elections I’m aware of have the Opposition emerging as winners. We’re having one, too, in Tsukuba, Japan sponsored by a group of Filipino scholars. Japan-based Filipinos are invited to come.

Acknowledgements of Trillanes struggle for reforms by respected figures like Prof Nemenzo definitely help a lot in politics. Iyong iba ay naghihintay lang ng endorsement ng kanilang mga pinagkakatiwalaan personalidad, for others this serves as confirmation that their choice was better/best. And then, domino effect na.
I don’t know much about politics, but I observed especially in the local scenes na ang mga balitang ganito ay napakalaking tulong sa decision ng mga voters na hindi pa nakaka-decide. I already emailed this to my friends in the provinces and already got three replies na ipinadala na rin nila sa iba. Kahit konting positibong hakbang ay malaki na sa kaso ng candidacy ni Trillanes na pinahihirapan ni Tianak at minions.
In countries where strong institutions are in place, the voters not only elect their leaders, but contribute to the planning of programs and platform of government by actively joining a party and put his/her idea in line of the party’s principles and ideologies and established long term programs.
Most programs put forward by Parties during the campaign started from the grassroots, where policies and planned actions during the mandates are studied and deliberated by the party’s committees and finally approved by the Party Executives as the issues during the particular campaign.
And programs and promises are back up by comprehensive plans of Actions and sources of finances and duration of projects and targeted completion and expected results, not just promises in the winds.
Trillanes can have my vote, but, for Honasan, it’s a big-O, nope! No puwede, He has all the chances to proved him worthy when he was a senator and he did not delivered, he could not even defend himself on all the charges against him, either it was an orchestrated or manufactured charges, how much more he can defend the people, he was always on the run since the fall of Marcos and in Aquino’s presidency. Honasan is nothing but, a puppet of Enrile. He is a living proof that in politics, is nothing more than capturing the imagination of the people through his Houdini status and celebrity look, He’s old, and no handsome no more, mga Manang! I could not make a hero out of him ,bistado na siya.I rather place my bet on Lacson and Trillanes, but, Honasan, he is a risky-commodities. Sorry Gringo! Hindi na ako bilib sa iyo.
I share your sentiments about Honasan. When he filed his certificate of candidacy, he said he welcomes endorsement from both administration and opposition. What is that? Okay lang sa kanya i-endorse ni Gloria Arroyo na sinungaling, mandaraya, at magnanakaw.

What you said was a very mature relationship between the voters and their elected leaders. How fortunate of some established countries to have realized their promised programs of government, but as you said they can only complete them with needed contributions from responsible voters.
Unfortunately, Pinas election style is still very far from that ideal situation. We are not even sure if the country will ever come out of it’s habitual election practice due to its political leaders corrupt thinking and the easily corrupted voters. Ang mga pangako ay puro napapako at inililipad ng hangin!
For now, I go with the pinoys who wanted out of traditional politics by choosing carefully the next leaders because no matter how most of us would like the “just” situation you described, it’s impossible for Pinas to achieve it with a poser president and minions leading the hungry and tired citizenry.
The only avenue we have for a change is this coming election, not to mention the alternative, rebolusyon!

Well it can be argued that others sacrificed even MORE than that. A guy named Ninoy “sacrificed” his life in 1983. What came out of that? He would have been of better use to us alive today than six feet under.
In the same way. Bozos like Trillianes should have thought about the long term effects of their actions first before acting based on thinking with the wrong head. It’s bizarre that a person who had political aspirations within the framework of the law actually participated in an act of rebellion.

We keep pinning our hopes on heroes. But in my opinion, individual instances of “heroism” are easily smothered and undermined by a sea of mediocre intentions, ideas, and actions. A country of more than 80 million souls like ours has proven time again that it can produce only a VERY MINISCULE number of exceptional people.
Very small proportion of brilliance will always be but a small voice in a sea of dull and unimaginative actions. And very small proportions of doing-things-right will be but miniscule instances in a sea of pwede-na-yan and bahala na mentalities.

I don’t think Trillanes went to PMA just so he could stage a mutiny or run for the senate, either or both. His actions in Oakwood have far reaching influence than blogging on bloggers. The Greenbase Expose is more potent than GetReal!
The best way to serve society is not to steal, cheat and lie. Defend the Constitution with dear life. That’s what they were trained, that’s what they did, and want to keep doing.
If Trillanes would do a Honasan, how will we ever know? We must first put him in a position he is seeking so he can prove his worth. Or his detention and nonretraction not worthy enough?

Well, therein lies the irony. The situations that make it difficult to do just that (win an election) was a result of his own doing.
So why do you think he is running for office? Probably because his military career has gone down the tubes.
Think about it. Trillianes is a washed-out low-ranking soldier (and therefore lacks any other marketable skill). He is in prison. But he is popular. Those ingredients point to only one option — enter politics.
Just like most of these artistas, he probably sees politics as the only other alternative career (in the face of a prospect of a lifetime of obscurity and poverty). After all, it is only in Pinoy politics that even morons can succeed. Which is why it is the career of choice of many morons, has-beens and other people who are in dead-end careers.

The bloodline of the world’s economy is energy. Freeing ourselves from the bondage of oil dependence is the key to eliminating poverty without any politician or our own government’s intervention.
His invention is the envy of experimenters and scientists worldwide. Give it a try before you criticize.
I believe that most Filipinos, in the youth of their lives, were idealistic enough not to settle for mediocre standards. Trillanes is one of them. His intention in joining the ranks of the military may have been an idealistic view of an armed force training its guns on enemies of the state. Seeing later on that their own guns are aimed at their own heads made him lose the respect for the military institution and its civilian leaders altogether. I don’t think anybody can blame him for that. He did what he thought was the only way out in 2003 and he failed. His intention to seek a seat in the senate, I would consider, is his means to continue the struggle for a society beyond “the sea of pwede-na-yan and bahala na mentalities.” Had he closed his eyes and just played on, he would have had an easy time getting promoted the way Esperon got his CSAFP portfolio. Here is a person who risked career, family and life in the pursuit of ideals and we give him our thumbs down? We will never go farther than the “sea of pwede-na-yan and bahala na mentalities” if we deny idealistic people like Trillanes the support they deserve.

Sorry, but I am critical of Honasan because I was told from a first hand source (an ex-RAM member) that Honasan, unless my source was sourgraping, has, on several instances, ran away w/ the members’ money. The reason why my source became an ex member. My source told me this at the height of the Oakwood siege, as to the reason why it did not succeed.
If Trillanes wins in this election, it will be a big slap on the faces of the Pidals and their minions. It should actually be a warning to them that the Filipinos are up to their necks with their “kabulastugan” and time for them to say “Adieu”!
God willing, he will win. If Abalos, et al would insist on having the Midget’s TUtas win, he and his fellow crooks should better be ready to take responsibility for their actions.
Bistado na sila sa totoo lang. There will be lesser OFWs voting apparently to show their disgust not just for this midterm but also for the Election 2004. Unfortunately, the kapalmuks cannot be bothered by such show of protest. In fact, she will make use of such opportunity to have those blank ballots be filled up by people conniving with her for a fee. In Japan, most likely the returned ballots would be used but since we already know the modus operandi, they may just as well forget it because Filipinos here will demand rejection of those filled up ballots coming from Manila. If the ballots are not mailed directly to the Embassy/Consulate in Japan, they should be considered null and void and thrown in the waste can.
Filipinos in countries where voting by mail is now allowed should take this same precaution. They had tried the same modus operandi in Election 2004 in Japan. They can do it again. Bistado na ang mga walanghiya, wala pa ring hiya!!!

How’s this different from what Enrile and Honasan did back in 1986?
Back then, everyone was under the impression (and to be fair maybe it was true) that they had the most noble intentions for holing themselves up in those Edsa army camps.
But then history played out and today those two are just another pair of ridiculous trapos.

Enrile’s and Honasan’s colors showed up quite prematurely. Merely a few months after the victory in EDSA. It would even be safe to say that their colors were already showing before EDSA. We cannot say, for sure, if Trillanes has different colors to show once elected, but, to be fair, he is worth the gamble.
Are we so quick to forget that we were in EDSA not because of the triumvirate but because of our collective outrage? Were we at EDSA to defend them, or were we there to defend ourselves as a people?
What is different about the situation today? Nothing, maybe because we ended up trusting Enrile, et al. What is different between Trillanes on one hand and the triumvirate on the other? The former fought when it is safer to keep the status quo, the latter fought only when it was safer to fight the status quo.
Enrile is part of the past (1986), while Gringo is already tainted. Trillanes, a young idealistic principled soldier, is fast becoming a part of the consciousness of pinoys who hope that Pinas is worth saving from the evils of the Pidals! HOPE, that’s the difference.
Enrile and Gringo offered us hope then and we celebrated. Our folks or us became complacent after then and Pinas got d’glue.
It’s a cycle, yes. But the difference between people who have surrendered and accepted that CHANGE has no worth in Pinas, and people who have hopes for a better future is that the latter continue to hope, which is perhaps the most essential factor for a change. Without HOPE life is boring and not worth living!
Experience had shown us that a strong party system in a Democracy works better than one single popular personality or Leadership by Personalities. We had Marcos in the past, a very popular leader, but even with his dictatorial power was not able to bring forth any reform during the first few good years of his administration. Then it was followed by a few more personalities, some promising, most were just our ordinary “trapos”. Nada. Then Came Gloria. Worst…I would not be telling anyone who to vote this election and who not to vote, because I am not voting and as I said before, I refused to raise my right hand to again swear allegiance to the citizenship that was mine by birth and never renounced. Just a matter of principles, because Canada allows her citizens to take up as many others without losing hers, I believe it just not fair to be treated different.
My only suggestion is to vote for any candidate or candidates that’s will put forward a program of “electoral reforms”, including the overhaul of “any party” or anyone can put up his/her own party without any agendas, ideologies, principles and long term programs. Otherwise we will have a long line up of Popular actors, sportsmen, clowns, who’s only intention to join Politics is to Establish their own line of “Trapos”.

I don’t believe in long term programs/plans especially in Pinas case. Pareho tayo diyan. It’s my reason why I’m so careful in my choice of candidates. But I’m also a gambler for a necessary change of a desperate situation.
I saw in Trillanes the spirit needed for a change. He doesn’t promise heaven and earth, but exposes corruption and incompetence of the AFP high command and this bogus administration in general. If there is one sector that I desperately want a change or return to its orginal mandate, it’s the AFP. Kawawa ang bayan na ang mga hepe ng AFP ay alipin ng dalawang buang, ang mag-asawang Pidal!

Paki-check ang Omnibus Election Code. There is a clause there about free airing of campaign ads. In fact, ang sabi doon, the TV and radio networks may even provide free (walang bayad) airing of ads of worthy candidates as public service. Bakit hindi iyan ginagawa?
Wala kaming ganyan tradition sa Japan, however, although, the national TV gives candidates 10 to 15 minute slots to candidates in a national election. Local TV’s (each city here has its own TV stations too via cable) and they give the same privilege to candidates–10 to 15 minutes to air their platforms and nothing more. Sana ganyan sa Pilipinas para fair, walang pataasan ng ihi.

Another difference, Chabeli, is that Honasan is a philanderer, Sonny is not. It makes a big difference, and why God will bless the Philippines if they have a leader who is faithful to his ideals, etc., including his wife!

Honasan may have fought for freedom, but that was merely incidental. The prospect of arrest and possibly eventual death by musketry hung over his head weeks before the EDSA affair. His fight was more for his life than for freedom or any other noble concepts.
Trillanes wasn’t under any personal threat when he decided to proceed to Oakwood. Threats to his person and to his family surfaced only right after Oakwood.
Trillanes was finally interviewed by TV today. I just saw TV patrol.Interview by Korina Sanchez. It was good. In fighting form against corruption. He didn’t regret what he did although he paid a high price for that. Aside from his freedom, he lost a child while in detention.
He said Gloria Arroyo will cheat again this election in the same way that she cheated in 2004. Full interview will be shown tomorrow on Korina Today, ANC at 1 pm.

He’s a very witty and creative boy. I told him that the Queen performed the original song. He quickly responded, ah kaya pala. ‘Di ba si Gloria feeling queen, queen ng enchanted kingdom? My wife, my daughter and I couldn’t stop laughing. Bullseye! Even small kids know what the TUTA and pandak will do if they win.
i will not argue whatever observations colleagues here say about honasan. everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion and shopuld be respected as long as it is directed to the subject and not shooting in a fashioned way making mere observes unaware being dragged into it. however, it cannot be denied that he (honasan) also played a role in ending the rule of what/who they said was a dictator, and (he was) called one time a “liberator and champion of edsa”.

I fully understood your sentiment about me making suggestion while not exercising my right to vote. But I mentioned that that right was taken away from me by taking away my citizenship, which I did not agree by principles. I stood by my principles of not swearing back allegiance to a country whose allegiance I never forsaken. But suggestion is suggestion, people listen to it, good, if not no harm done. Like you said each of us are entitled to our thoughts as long as we are not imposing them on others.
And also rights are yours to exercise or not, and I choose not to exercise my right to vote in Philippines Politics, whose Abseentee voting leaves a lot to be desired.
First the voting is not complete with the voter’s local representative of where he’s last known address in the Philippines. Local or district representation is more representative in a democracy.
Unlike in our case, where our voters abroad (absentee) are voting just like being home, with the list of local candidates for councillors, mayors, school boards are all reflected in the ballots.
So again, I have to tell the truth as truth is always better than lies as we always say about Gloria..

Ellen, I read somewhere that his wife is currently out of the country. It must be tough to be incarcerated, lose a child and be separated from his wife. His sacrifices will soon pay off. The only consolation Trillanes has and so with the other incarcerated officers is the fact that they will not have to blindly follow their corrupt leaders and be in the same league as the trapos. This scenario would be worst that the detention they are in.
I have more respect for Trillanes than any of the TUTA candidates! He has the guts to openly fight corruption even if it meant giving up a promising career(he was a cum laude in PMA-he is not an ampaw!). Benigno, says that Trillanes has a doomed career and now has to go into politics. Quite on the contrary, he is just starting his career. Mandela was in prison for 27 years. Who would have thought that he would be a president of the same country he was in jail for the longest time. The incarceration of Trillanes and the other brave officers is actually a blessing in disguise. Can you imagine these men following orders from the two hemorrroids who are known to be the most corrupt in the AFP? Top this with a lying, cheating and murderous leadership and it is HELL!
The passion to serve and lead will keep on. Trillianes has a path he wants to tread. Benigno, you have your own passion to just keep on criticizing. Theory is very different from action.
