The Filipino people will survive Duterte

In the traditional first 100 days assessment of a President’s performance one does not really expect concrete results knowing the complexities of governance but within the first three months, the public should have an idea the direction that the president is leading the country to.

Duterte has made clear what the public can expect in the coming months: there will be more killings.

The numbers vary and are difficult to ascertain but the figure being mentioned in news reports of illegal drugs related deaths under Duterte’s rule range from 1,500 to 300,000. The numbers continue to increase every day.

Duterte himself has revised his figures of drug suspects from 700,000 to four million.

He said, “Iyong 700,000, it’s going up, it’s gonna reach a million mark by the end of this month. 1 million drug addicts plus 3 million noong sinabi ng PDEA, ilan iyan, di 4 million. “

He asked for another six months to fulfill his promise of stopping crime, drugs, and corruption because he said, “I never realized the problem is this big.”

It should be recalled that he anchored his campaign on the promise that he will eliminate illegal drugs, crime and corruption in three to six months. If he fails, he said during the campaign in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, he will resign and turn over the presidency to Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. who was running for vice president under a different ticket.

Marcos didn’t win.

Dutrerte slammed those skeptical about his self-imposed deadline saying that if he couldn’t do it within three months,” I really cannot do it even if you give me 10 years of rule.”

The numbers and deadlines are changed but not the style of governance. He will continue to curse and gain notoriety in the international scene.

He sees no reason to change: “Hindi naman ako nag-apply ng position na statesman. Nag-apply ako ng posisyong presidente. Nagpa-elect ako statesman, I do not know how he would dress. I do not even know how he would open a statement. But what I know is that I have to serve the greater interest of the Filipino people.”

A statesman is defined as “an experienced politician, especially one who is respected for making good judgments. “

Social anthropologist Melba Padilla Maggay’s incisive analysis of Duterte’s style of governance in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, is very helpful in coping with the toxic situation.

Maggay said, “Many in this country mistake President Duterte’s unswerving use of force as political will, when what is really before us is an alarming drift toward an authoritarian barbarism, where the full apparatus of power—formal or nonformal—are used to savage those who stand in his way, without regard for law or the niceties of civility.”

She warned of the insidious effect of what Duterte is doing: “These historic reversals, overshadowed by the spectacle of vigilante killings, are in fact more dangerous. While there is blustering talk about fighting corruption and an unjust system, we are in fact experiencing an increasing moral rot in the very fabric of our society. There is a subtle overturning of our values, a corrosion of our civic sense of what is just and decent and acceptable. As a sign of this creeping contamination, we just need to take a look at how those once honorable senators voted to oust De Lima as justice committee chair.”

Maggay said some may romanticize Duterte as “a lovable rake with a soft heart.”

But, she said, the testimony of Edgar Matobato, who claims to be a member of the Davao Death Squad, reveals a very dark underside of Duterte. “It validates the fear that at the center of power in this country is a man who is morally obtuse. The coarse language, the recklessly compulsive outbursts directed at the Pope, the US ambassador and the US president himself are but the tip of the iceberg. Scripture tells us that ‘out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.’ What this means is that speech mirrors our state of heart, a verbal reflex of what is inside, displaying the quality of our soul. Bad language is not just bad manners.”

Given the dizzying happening these past three months, many ask,”Can Duterte finish his six year term? “ I consider that a politically incorrect question. The more appropriate question is “Can we last six years of Duterte”

I believe in the Filipino people. We will survive.

  1. Who among you here support legalization or decriminalization of drugs? I suppose, none, even the author, I think. The public at large don’t, not in a generation.

And that’s the problem. Most actually support the war against drugs which is understandable for the damage it does to society. But it won’t work: not through due process, not through brute force. Those who silently support the ongoing war are actually those dissatisfied with ineffectiveness of law enforcement that come with due process. Those shocked by the multiplying dead bodies want due process back but will in time rail against the government for the spreading drug menace due to ineffective law enforcement.

I suppose we need for once to experience the effect of brute force in the war against drugs for us and the public to fully appreciate the options available.

I am in favor of legalizing marijuana.
Alcohol is a worse killer than shabu and other illegal drugs combined. But why is no one advocating the banning of alcohol?

a pusher destroys an entire family.

a drug lord destroys a whole city.

and, a protector destroys the country.

if a pusher gets killed, a family is saved.

when a drug lords is killed, a city is saved.

and, if a protector is killed, the whole nation is saved.

My experience and perhaps most of my fellow country men and women that criminalising the use of drugs would not just work but will aggravate the problem…when MDMA was legal and prepared as pharmaceutical grade it was not as dangerous and killer as an illegal Shabu or moly or ecstacy..which only makes the Drug lord wealthy and untouchable…Cannabis can be grown just about everywhere..in the basement, and in the Big grow ops operations that even the Cops can uncover half of them, still profitable for the operators to continue…

Solution..legalise Cannabis and the Govt will earn Billions in taxes and get rid of dealers and illegal grows ups and related crimes…Rgulate opioids based medication to keep them out of the hands of abusers as they are very addictive…Many well known celebrities and youngsters succumbed to Opioid overdose including regular patients who took a little too much at a time…

Now the cons of legalise Cannabis..DUI of Cannabis… and just like DUI of alcohol it could be another killer…still studying its effect the reason why the legislation will not be out until April of 2017 meanwhile Use of any drug is a OK..IT IS NON CRIME…NOBODY WILL GET CHARGE FOR POSSESSION for personal use and the SC has already established the TEST…If the drugs in possession if for use or is for trafficking…the very Famous “OAKES Test” Striking out the law (reverse onus) presuming that the accused with so much so drugs in his possession is guilty of Trafficking…no Sir, Said the SC..the Crown must prove that he is a Trafficker…beyond any doubt and must have the quantity of drugs to be guilty of being the Lord of traffickers…might as well legalized shabu too…so it will be pharmaceutically prepared and pure and regulated…

Ellen, for a while now we are “tolerated” to grow a few plants of Cannabis for our personal use but not for trafficking…Right now anticipating the legalization of Cannabis this April of 2017, Dispensing Clinic are popping up like Roses in the Spring…but we still don’t know how the Substance will be sold to the Public..Medicinal Marijuana is mostly sold on line and the Postal Service has the exclusive contract for Delivery…there are rumours that it will be sold in the Govt solely owned Liquour Store which will sold only to legal age..like alcohol…

Some of the issues the Ministry of health and justice are ironing out is how much or when to be considered DUI and will it be a criminal offence or traffic offence…Impairment by Alcohol is criminal Offence…meaning limited mobility, until pardoned and a minimum of 5 years wait before qualifying…

But one thing for Sure… we will not have to fear of getting shoot while taking a sniff or lighting a joint from our cops..And CAMH (centre for addiction and mental health) is always there if anyone wanted to get rid of the habit…for the abusers only

“Perhaps Duterte’s landslide election has made his ego swell to such an extent he has grown delusional. Whatever the case, his regime’s wanton bloodlust is neither the stuff of intelligent policymaking nor good governance. It’s murder, pure and simple. The rise of Duterte’s authoritarian populism is certain and, like it or not, “average Filipinos” will remain the regime’s victims.”

  8. Chi: I posted that same article by Manjit Bhatia 5 blog posts back (dun sa Cutting the Nose to Spite the Face) kasama yung cartoon ng TOMO News na ginawang clown si PDiggy. Dito ko na-realize kung paano nawalan ng respeto ang foreign media sa pangulo natin.

“The Filipino People will survive Duterte”

Kung hindi pa tayo tuluyang naibenta sa China, we will survive.
Kung hindi siya kakainin ng tuluyan ng maling ideolohiya gaya ng ideolohiya ng mga Tiamson at Joma Sison, we will survive.
Ito ang maganda, kung ititikon niya bibig niya, we will survive.

Golberg at #11 for sure the Filipino nation will survive all kinds of adversity including what nature dishes out..it has survived the devastation of Yolanda, the daily gridlocks of traffic congestion, the Flooding, and the child poverty, and maternal health…Duterte at most will last his six years terms..But the victims of his WAR ON DRUGS WERE ALSO Filipinos, his very own people and no Longer SURVIVING…

Ellen and tongue, dyan natigok ang FB ko. 🙂

  12. That’s why I try to avoid FB. I moved to reddit instead. Most of the exchanges there are more intellectual and free from the usual Dutertards’ and Yellowtards’ lynch mobs that dominate political posts of local newsgroups. Further almost all discussions are in English so you won’t read those “obosen mga adik” remarks.
