Duterte’s debut in the international stage a disaster

Whatever one’s political leaning is, every Filipino wants to be proud of the President when he appears in the world stage.

He represents the Filipino people. His success is our success. His embarrassment is our embarrassment.

The 2016 Asean summit in Vientiane, Laos was President Duterte’s first official foreign trip. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the other world leaders, it was an opportunity for him to show the world his remarkable transition from city mayor to president of one of the Asia’s vibrant democracy.

As Philippine president, he had a prominent role in Laos Asean meeting because next year it will be the Philippines’ turn to host the summit of the 10-country regional grouping to be followed by meeting of leaders of ASEAN’s 10 dialogue partners which include China, Japan, South Korea , and the United States.

But he wasted that opportunity by his offensive remarks made on the eve of the summit directed to the leader of the world’s superpower whom he had not yet met in person and had not said anything bad about him.

The regrettable thing about it is that, those disgusting remarks were not warranted.

The question by Reuters’ Jerome Morales was hardly provocative. He merely asked: “Sir, there have been concerns on extrajudicial killings, sir, and you will meet leaders. Any line of communication that we have prepared to address this issue in front of other foreign leaders?”
Duterte asked if it’s about extrajudicial killings and Morales replied in the affirmative adding “human rights.”

Duterte asked, “To whom shall I address myself to and who will be asking the questions, may I know?

Morales replied, “Like Obama, sir.”

What got into him? Pres. Duterte curses Obama in a press conference before he left for the Asean 2016 summit in Laos.
What got into him? Pres. Duterte curses Obama in a press conference before he left for the Asean 2016 summit in Laos.

Duterte got fired up and launched a lecture on the Philippines no longer a colony of the U.S. “I do not respond to anybody but to the people of the Republic of the Philippines. Wala akong pakialam sa kanya. Who is he? “

He went on and on, cursing: “Putang-ina, mumurahin kita diyan sa forum na iyan. Huwag mo akong ganunin. Tell that to everybody.”

He threatened to kick Obama and invited journalsits to join him in Laos so they would see him do it in front of them: “Hindi ako bilib diyan sa America. Gusto mo sipain ko pa iyan sa harap mo eh. Pumunta kayo doon.”

He said he will not discuss with other leaders in Laos the state of lawlessness, which he declared following the night market bombing in Davao Friday night.

“I will not discuss it with them…It’s an internal affair which nobody but nobody should interfere including the so-called judicial killing of the drug lords and the apparatus/members of the drug syndicates,” he said.

Duterte also said he did not want “to pick a quarrel with Obama.”

“But certainly, I would not appear to be beholden to anybody. I only am answerable, again, to the Filipino people who elected me as President. Period. Nobody but nobody should interfere. This is an independent country, nobody has the right to lecture on me. God, do not do it. “

He warned: “Magkababuyan tayo doon ‘pagginawa mo sa akin iyan.”

After the White House cancelled the meeting with him Duterte, issued a statement read by Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella. It read: “While the immediate cause was my strong comments to certain press questions that elicited concern and distress, we also regret it came across as a personal attack on the US President.”

He said his primary intention in his statements was “ to chart an independent foreign policy while promoting closer ties with all nations, especially the US with which we have a had a long standing partnership.”

An independent foreign policy is enshrined in the Constitution. Everybody is behind the President in implementing it. And it is best done with civility. The Filipino people are not “bastos.”

It’s a pity that Duterte’s idol, Russian President Vladimir Putin was not the one who represented Russia in the Laos summit. Duterte was scheduled to meet with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Duterte might learn from one of the quotes attributed to Putin: “When people cross the boundary of good manners, this attests to their weakness not their strength.”

  2. chi chi

I like Obama more when he kept silent against our fool and just said “he is a very colorful character” to answer a question. Obama stands ‘taller’ pa.

  3. chi chi

    Thanks Ellen for this article.

  4. Mike Mike

Funny how his loyalists try to defend him by saying that Duterte is not actually cussing at Obama. I just don’t know what they meant by that. If it’s not Obama? Then who? The media? America? And about the “sisipain ko iyan..” It’s not Obama daw? So sinong sisipain niya? Hangin?

Si Abe ang sabi “he is quite famous in Japan.”

I guess this is the kind of president that we are compelled to withstand for the next 6 years… sad but true… 🙁

Why his hands on his pockets..??

If someone always puts his hands in his pockets then this person might be lacking self confidence because he always feels uncomfortable around other people.

    Is it true..??

  9. Golberg Golberg

    #8 I heard its true.

Or, he might have left his balls in the Philippines. He’s trying to look for it. That is why his hands are in his pocket.

Duterte ‘shocks’ summit meeting with tirade vs US

Setting aside a prepared speech, Duterte spoke for more than five minutes about human rights and his campaign against drugs during the East Asian Summit in the Laotian capital of Vientiane, according to one Indonesian diplomat at the meeting.

“Let me tell you about human rights,” the diplomat quoted Duterte as saying while displaying a picture of Filipinos killed by American soldiers about a century ago.

“This is my ancestors being killed, so why now we are talking about human rights? We have to talk of the full spectrum of human rights.”

Duterte launched into a tirade about US military killings in the Philippines when it was an American colony from 1898 to 1946, according to three diplomats that Agence France-Presse spoke with who were in the room.

“The Philippine president showed a picture of the killings of American soldiers in the past and the president said: ‘This is my ancestor they killed. Why now we are talking about human rights,” an Indonesian delegate said.

The delegate described the atmosphere in the room as “quiet and shocked.”

I did shake hands with President Duterte last night,” Obama told a press conference, “I don’t take these kinds of things personally.”

Obama added…“I think it’s just a habit, a way of speaking for him,”.

For those who think and still believed that Duterte made remarks of insults against the US President ( the Journalist who asked Duterte made an imaginary scenario. A scenario of fantasy. Now everyone makes a fuss about a fantasy..a dream..a false precept) ..I say think again….because all your tirade boils to nothing.

Come to think again….Duterte was chosen to chair next year’s ASEAN summit.

The Philippines was chosen to chair the 2017 ASEAN summit, not Duterte per se.

  17. chi chi

Obama and Duterte shaked hands and exchanged kaplastikan, that’s a must participants do in summits.
The fact that Obama cancelled his meeting with Duterte meant the Pinas president was not ready to discuss substantial issues with him. 🙂
Magaling talaga si Obama sa diplomacy, he made use of his words to the max in easing the tension at hindi mapahiya si Digong.
When Digong presented the photo and mentioned the killing of “his ancestors” by the Americans between 1896-1946 American colonization, he himself brought the issue he didn’t want Obama to touch, the human rights.
Buti hindi siya binalikan ni Obama, ‘and why is that relevant to today’s pressing issues?

Ito yung comment: “HE HAS A BRAIN?”

    Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

  19. chi chi

Hahahahahaha! Mas gusto ko yan, Golberg.

  20. Ayos pa rin si Duterte. Intindihin lang muna anuman ang sabihin niya.

The fact is the media made a really bad translation (probably intentional). The international media is starting to understand it now. Where’s the admission of the media for their mistake?

  22. roc roc

it’s much the same way we appreciated a village idiot, pinas was noticed for the wrong reason. and was that all the contribution digong brought to asean meeting?

  23. roc roc

we got world wide attention when we won the hague’s court tribunal, and china’s 9 dash line was deemed illegal, walang basehan. tapos, ito si digong, talking much rubbish, when he could have pushed for economic development, boost tourism and create goodwill among our allies, instead of ill will and bad feeling. may mental sickness yata.

  24. Achilles Achilles

Someone commented that the Philippines was chosen to chair the ASEAN Summit 2017 and not Duterte per se. Or do you mean host? yes the whole archipelago can host but to chair means only pertains to one particular person and no other than the President. The whole country cannot chair a summit but only its President and even if he is not physically present the representation still addresses in behalf of the President who stands for the country and no other than Duterte. How did Laos address the chairmanship of their country??…”H.E. Thongloun SISOULITH, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR chaired the Summits between ASEAN and Dialogue Partners and the ASEAN Plus Three Summit

H.E. Thongloun SISOULITH, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR continued to chair the Summits between ASEAN and its Dialogue Partners, namely China, Japan, ROK, Australia, ASEAN-UN Summit and the ASEAN Plus Three Summit on 7 September 2016, at the National Convention Centre (NCC) in Vientiane, Lao PDR.”

If you still believed that chairmanship of a summit means the whole archipelago since you say it is Philippines the tell me who will sit on the summit to represent Luzon? Visayas and Mindanao? who will sit to chair the summit for the Filipinos abroad? Think about that if Duterte is not the one who was given the chairmanship as a President and instead the whole country chairs the entire summit. It doesn’t make sense.

Sorry to pierce your heel, Achilles. Argumentum ad absurdum, he he he. I rest my case.

  26. #18, Achilles, Duterte was not “chosen” to chair Asean 2017.

According to Article 31 of the ASEAN Charter, the Chairmanship of ASEAN shall rotate annually, based on the alphabetical order of the English names of Member States. A Member State assuming the Chairmanship shall chair the ASEAN Summit and related summits, the ASEAN Coordinating Council, the three ASEAN Community Councils, relevant ASEAN Sectoral Ministerial Bodies and senior officials, and the Committee of Permanent Representatives.

Please go to this site para maintindihan mo kahit sino ang presidente ngayon taon, Philippines ang chairman.

  27. The Philippines has hosted ASEAN summits three times: 1987 (Cory Aquino); 1999 (Joseph Estrada);2006 (Gloria Arroyo).

May sinusunod na guidelines, walang bidding, walang botohan.

  28. Here’s a post by Rachel Khan in Facebook para lalong maintindihan:

FYI to the uninformed: the hosting of the ASEAN is not voted upon by the members nor is it due to the popularity or infamy of its leader. The members of the ASEAN take turns to lead the summit and next year falls on the Philippines regardless of who is President….(or in this case, inspite of)

Naglulundag pa mandin si DAF Sec. Yasay at Alan Cayetano for the HONOR their big boss was accorded by the Asean. 🙂

When asked how Yasay rates PDutz in his performance of his first international summit attended, 8.5 daw out of 10. Yahooooo!

Today, after reading soo much about the drug wars that is soo brutal it is so unbelievable, our health ministry has come up with this idea, perhaps…joke only…but this one is real…note that Cannabis been legal for Medicinal use for quite sometimes and will be legalised for Recreational use in April of 2017..(rules and guidelines are being formulated by the Health and Justice ministries)..
    ………

    From Today’s news…
VANCOUVER — Health Canada has amended regulations allowing doctors to prescribe heroin to people who are severely addicted to opioids.

The government says the country is facing an opioid overdose crisis and health-care providers need help in treating patients suffering from chronic dependency.

The change to the former Conservative government’s legislation means pharmaceutical-grade heroin can be prescribed under a special-access program in cases where traditional treatment has failed.

Pls Note..that Opioids are regulated medications.. Oxicodone and Oxycotin are very addictive opioids…

we became disenchanted with ngoyngoy, his cabinet and his allies for their incompetence in handling and addressing lawlessness, corruption and widespread poverty and now, here is a man who does all the cleaning of mess left behind by his predecessor and those who came before him but still not contented and call him an embarassment?

the widespread of illegal drugs was clearly due to the corrupt ways of past leaders who did nothing to contain this menace.

The question is this. At least dalawang bata 5 and 6 years old ay timaman ng bala, patay!!!
