A lovely New Year even with Yolanda!

Yolanda was very much in our mind as we bid goodbye to 2013 and welcomed 2014.

Our place in Guisijan, Laua-an, Antique was one of those hit by Yolanda. Not as bad as Leyte and Samar but there was still a lot of repairing and fixing to do.

My mother's langka tree was no match to Yolanda's fury.

So was this mango tree at our backyard.

Chainsaw service is in demand to clear Yolanda's ruins.

We gathered the sawdust and put it in a compost pit.

What do we do with these cut tree trunks and branches?

Isn't this garden set lovely? Thanks to Yolanda. The bromeliad survived Yolanda and as if in triumph, it bloomed.

May God’s blessings come in abundance this year we are welcoming and other years to come.

I’ve always loved your garden, how it’s not so contrived and everything grows and blooms naturally!

  2. Thanks, Minnie.

Take note of the kamias tree next to the garden set. Ang daming bunga.

First time I see Minnie around here. The name sounds mine, “Mannie”. I hope readers don’t mistake me for her.

    Ellen,

It is like a “war zone” the aftermath of Haiyan and here are some of the photos the aftermath of the Ice Storm we have had recently…http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/ice_storm.html

The more than Hundred year old Tree on our back year was no match to the Ice Build up and branches snapped like sticks and we were out of power for Nine cold nights and it all electricians and emergency personnel were busy restoring power and took them up to 11 days to restore all power to more than 300000 thousands customers…the total estimated cost to the City is $75 millions for cleanup and restoration and countless millions for repair to house and electrical repairs which partly will be absorbed by home insurance…my total bill summed up to $10 grands for the tree clean up and electrical repairs and the home damaged is not assessed yet, but insignificant since the branches mostly hit the ground.

The only good thing is no fatalities related to the Ice Storm as the public heed the warming to stay indoor and avoid driving if not absolutely necessary..

I was out of the country and returned only for the last two days of outages and for the First time experience what it was to be in the Dark and without Heat in a very cold winter. Cold stay with my niece, but decided to stay and live like an Eskimo for two days and it was not bad at all, if properly dressed…

Ellen, ganyan mga upuan ko sa bundok dito. 🙂
Hinayang ako sa langka ng nanay mo, sayang.
Yolanda gave you a chance to landscape your property anew.

Correction to my post @ # 5.. the estimated $75 millions expense is for the clean up of fallen trees and branches at 25 and the long Term repair of the City Tree Canopy which was badly damaged by the Ice Storm that will affect the environment if not repaired..the cost of reconnecting the power is estimated at $1 million per day of outages and it lasted 11 days…That was a record Ice Storm never happened before and snapping even the strongest tree like a piece of match stick is something that only seeing is to believe what nature is capable of doing.

And of course just like Tacloban, the City Government was caught Flatfooted…Its Utility CEO Confidently assured the public that power will be restored within 72 hours without even assessing the Magnitude of the Damage, but to his Credit, he did not spare any expense and effort to restore power after making the initial booboo. Including requesting assistance from out of town and non-stop operation even during the holiday.

And now, the Pruning of the trees, replanting, and it will take a few years to make the City looks as green as it was before the Storm.

Vic, could you update us on Toronto Mayor Ford’s case? Like the Napoles Pork Barrel case that was almost forgotten due to the recent Yolanda typhoon, the Ontario power outage could have temporarily stopped Mayor Ford’s investigation and media publicity. Thanks and Happy New Year.

  9. vic vic

Mannie, Mayor Ford has filed for next year Election and he will be running for Re-election…(to be honest, he is a very good Mayor when it comes to Governance) so far he is not disqualified…The Outages did not stop the publicity at all, and the investigation is a Police issue and the public will only be updated if there is new development..As you know, Mayor Ford is a very wealthy man and without evidence of his alleged crimes, he can sue anyone for civil damages and so far the Media has already did its part by exposing his Crack addiction, and alcoholism, and other vices. The allegation of his involvement in the Murder of one of the Dixon Guys where he was seen with in the Video is still have to be supported with evidence and so far there is no charges in court related to that case. The case was being investigated by a Canada wide police investigation.

Anyway, the News will be in the frontline of CNN as the Mayor loves the Publicity…so much…His likely very strong opponent is Olivia Chow, the widow of the late New Democrats Leader Jack Leaton and also a former Socialist MP…she is very popular and a very talented and intelligent, of Chinese descent (from Hong Kong)And I guarantee this will be an interesting election, in Oct 27 this year.

Mayor Ford is indeed popular in Toronto and I think the people of city like him. Olivia Chow is a strong opponent being the wife of the late NDP (?) leader. Was it a certain Jack? She gets the visible minority votes especially Chinese and Asians. It’s going to be a good fight. As for the evidences against Ford, were not those videos enough evidences? Videos don’t lie.

  11. vic vic

Videos and any recording is not an acceptable evidence unless supported by other corroborating evidence..it is used as an Aid for investigation otherwise it will be all over the place and just forget the cops.

And by the way, smoking pot unless caught by the cops with evidence and not by Video will not stand up in court..actually smoking pot alone or crack will not return a conviction in our courts but trafficking will…The rule is never to lay charges unless there is a strong prospect of Convictions or wait until there are enough evidence…usually for serious crimes there is no Statute of limitation so it could take 10, 20 years the cops may have to be patience or waste the taxpayers money and their time…

In the case of the video, there were allegations that Mayor ford offered to buy the video but is offering only $5000 and a truck while the person who had possession was asking $150 thousands..and the video is now before the Court and the media can no longer comment on that issue.

By the way Olivia Chow is still an MP and the it was Jack Layton who was the Official Opposition leader.

sayang talaga ang langka at mangga. this reminds me of a city ordinanance in oslo to secure permission to cut trees of certain age and diameter. kahit na natural disaster ay sayang pa rin.
