No People Power seen whatever the Senate verdict on Corona

Pro and anti Corona rallies at the SC. Thanks to Inquirer for photo.
There will not be a repeat of EDSA DOS, the “civil society”-induced activity in 2001 that led to the ouster of elected president Joseph Estrada and the installation of Gloria Arroyo in Malacañang, whatever would be the decision of the senator-judges in the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona.

It is worthy to note that many of the people that helped Arroyo assume the presidency without election in 2001 are now with the Aquino administration, which is pursuing the impeachment of Corona, Arroyo’s midnight appointee as chief justice.

The expectation of public acceptance of the senator-judges’ verdict on Corona is once again affirmed in a survey, this time by Pulse Asia.

Conducted from Feb. 26 to March 9, 2012, the Pulse Asia Ulat ng Bayan survey covered 1,200 respondents nationwide. The period of the survey covered the wrapping up of the prosecution of their presentation of evidence after they decided to drop five of the eight items in the Articles of Impeachment. The Defense team started their presentation of witnesses March 12.

In the survey, Pulse Asia asked respondents their opinion on possible actions of the people on whatever decision the Senate would make in the Corona impeachment.

Majority (58 percent) said “their countrymen will accept and respect the Senate’s decision whether most of the people like it or not.”

Thirty-four said majority of the Filipinos will respect or accept only the decision that they like. It didn’t say, however, what they would do.

Eight percent said they “don’t know” what the people would do.

Pulse Asia’s findings jibe with the survey conducted by the group of Pedro “Junie” Laylo, Jr. conducted Jan. 28 through Feb. 6, 2012 which showed that an overwhelming majority of Filipinos (86 percent) will respect whatever decision the Senate, as an impeachment court, will make on Corona’s case.

Eight percent, the Laylo report said will join rallies if the Chief Justice is absolved, while four percent will join rallies if he is impeached. Two percent were undecided.

Several factors contribute to the expected easy acceptance by the public of whatever the impeachment court’s decision would be.

One, it’s not the president who is on the dock.

Two, life is difficult these days and the poor, who compose majority of the Filipino people, will not spend time and money to go out to question the senator-judges’ decision.

Three, the middle-class, who formed most of the EDSA Dos crowd, would rather do their protest on Facebook and Twitter.

Also, it’s easy for the public to accept the senators’ verdict because as the Pulse Asia’s survey showed, most Filipinos (69 percent) expect the senators to be fair and impartial. A lot less, 22 percent, say the, senator-judges will not be fair while nine percent are undecided.

Of course, the Chief Justice is not as important as the President after all.

  2. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

69% believe the senators will be impartial. This is good and bad.

Good because it seems the Senate court so far has projected a generally fair image. I emphasize the word ‘generally’.. because there are characters in that court that are clearly unfair and untrustworthy.

But such a high trust in the Senate could turn bad if those who believe in the senators’ fairness get suddenly disappointed if the Senate comes out with a perceived unfair verdict in the end.

  3. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

…but again, yes, maybe the Chief Justice position is not perceived by the public as critical as the position of the President. This is bad, if so.

  13. ningcho ningcho

maybe no people power but the senators-judges who seeks re election on 2013 will feel the power of the people if they will go against the will of the people.

the defense got what they wanted by putting atty diaz on the witness stand. delaying the proceedings, shifting the attention of the people to the real issue, make the prosecution look bad. and mirriam is, how shall i put it? her normal self again??? screaming like a banshee. poor atty diaz.

  15. Tangina, the issue didn’t even have bearing on the impeachment complaint. The formal complaint didn’t mention there were 45 titles, did it? So what’s the big deal all about?

Sabi sila ng sabi, walang pakialam ang media dito, kesyo they cannot be swayed by any survey, tapos nagwawala sila sa napulot nila sa media? They wasted 4 hours of my life this afternoon and of million other Pinoys’ who watched it.

Punyeta, they were barking at the wrong tree, did it help them help Corona? Did their badgering of this witness help explain why Corona did not declare his PSBank pesos and dollars? Did it make Corona harder to convict?

They merely prolonged the non-issue and exposed to the whole world how small minded these senators were.

  16. chi chi

Gosh, why don’t these pea-brained senators focus on the real issue of Corona not declaring the truth in his SALN? Diaz has nothing to do with anything, nakukuha halos lahat sa internet ang materials, raw or not.

Corona said he will fight till they kingdom come kaya yan ang strategy ng defense at ng mga senador na pabor kay Corona… stretching the days of trial to no end until the kapinuyan get tired of the issues knowing very well how easy pinoys forget.

  20. Oblak Oblak

  21. parasabayan parasabayan

I see nothing wrong with the list of properties given to the prosecution. Dapat lang, the prosecution investigated the properties on the list first before releasing their findings.

Deeds are public records and can be accessed anytime.

Even the cancelled deeds should be investigated coz if the Corona’s conveyed these properties, the Coronas are still parties to the transaction. The search engine will not just pick up information just like that unless the Corona’s names are at some point written somewhere. These cancelled deeds should still be investigated. Maybe the Coronas owned the properties at some point.

These probing into these properties wasted a lot of time! The bank accounts, pesos and dollars, should be more important than these cancelled properties.

  22. parasabayan parasabayan

Miriam, Joker, Jingoy,Pia and Angara already showed their colors from the very beginning. If the Filipinos are in their pathetic economic conditions now, blame your elected and appointed higher officials coz they suck you dry! They steal and they can get away with it!

    EXACTO!

    Gusto lang palabasin na

Watching the snippet of Joker grilling the LRA admin was like watching an illogical movie. Here is the supposedly intelligent guy asking the resource what happen. When the resource explains in plain simply english, Joker would not hear any of it. Nanloloko na lang daw.

The LRA admin did not say Corona has these 45 properties. What he clearly said was running a search shows 45 properties related to the Corona couple. And they are related. So it was and as simple as i can get it from the LRA admin, a historical search too.

And i think nga wala naman binaggit na 45 properties is what is being charged against Corona in the court. What is being charges was that Corona has more properties that he would admit.

And obviously from that research as well as Corona’s camp own admission, there were properties that were sold too. So two facts comes along with it:

    (1) Corona and his wife did have some of the properties related to him at one point (or that they were company related properties) which mean LRA admin is not lying or deceiving people;

    (2) Corona was the one deceiving the people when he did not include valid properties in any of his SALN. If he did like with Marikina property in ’92, then bakit parang kulang kulang or magulo.

And then bringing up the LRA admin is Aquino’s classmate is almost stupid. So kung naging kaklase ko yung LTO branch chief sa La Loma noong Grade 1, does that mean i get to see all records on his office?

i think Pia and Angara will vote to convict. Pia will vote with her bro, and being in the same party as Villar, they may talk about it. (Villar recently said he is supporting Aquino, hint hint to the admin for favors yan). Angara has his son as prosecutor. They are just being fair the way i see it.

i hope Jinggoy votes to convict. Group vote kasi yan, Jinggoy, Enrile, and Gringo.

Assuming you are correct then Corona gets scot-free because its Miriam, Joker, Pia, +Bro (?), Villar (?), Angara, Jinggoy, Enrile (?), and Gringo (?). That puts the possiblity of 9.

  26. xman xman

Sabi ni Mr. Clean, it took him three days to get the queries in Coronas properties from their computer system,,,whaaahhhhh?

    Joke, joke, joke….

  28. xman xman

“This CJ’s defense lawyers are really brilliant but in a bad way. They have reinvented the law of economics.”

Tanga yong commenter na yon dahil ang law of economics is not the same as law of accounting nor it is a subset of economics.

  29. xman xman

“The testimony of returning defense witness Carmina Cruz, customer relations head of Alveo Land, the developer of The Columns-Ayala condominium where the Coronas own the single-bedroom unit subject of the current dispute, bolstered the position of the defense that the Coronas properly and timely declared such property only in their 2010 SALn.”

  31. parasabayan parasabayan

Impeaching a cheat who knows all the tricks of the trade (using all the laws to protect himself) is not easy. The prosecution should have prepared better.

What Corona did all these years that he is in a high and powerful position is to leverage on the acquisition of assets, using his family members or maybe even friends as well. Those who were on the list of the 45 properties could be legitimately his friends and distant relatives. Probe deeper prosecution. Now that you are on break for at least five weeks, probe deeper. Do not give up easily. There may be a missing links somewhere. See if those people on the list were somehow related to the Coronas by affinity or in business. Investigate, investigate, investigate!

  32. parasabayan parasabayan

For all we know, the names on the list could even be one of Corona’s clients who bartered land with the settling of his/her/their case. Anybody can be a “dummy”. These dummies wont talk coz if they do, their families will be hostaged.

  33. parasabayan parasabayan

The worst that can happen is for Corona to continue looting more money and properties coz he gets to keep his position. I do not think any crazy powerful group would rally behind him if he gets impeached by the senate. Maliban na lang kay Brenda at Joker who really defend Corona like CRAZY! They are so passionately CRAZY to a point of saying that Corona is an “INNOCENT” man! Talk about fairness. I do not see this in these two well fed (by the pandak) senator-judges. It makes me wonder if Brenda got her International judge position through the clout of the pandak. Money speaks even if you are no longer in power! Malamang maraming utang na loob si Brenda kay pandak for her to act like a MANIAC in defending Corona!

Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

..and why delay? To cool off the crowd, to conduct a media and PR campaign. To manipulate the records, to find more liars to witness, to entice at least 8 jurors with offers they can’t refuse, etc, etc.

Buhay pa yata ang asawa ni Brenda. How can he put up with her BIG MOUTH?

  39. parasabayan parasabayan

Phil, tama ka, that is the strategy, PROLONG the hearing. Nandyan na ang mga horse traders! “What is for me?” and tanong ng bawat isa. If pandak’s clout is still very much in place, medyo mahal ang tawaran dyan. Pandak will pay very high coz Corona’s acquittal is the key to her freedom. So to her, she will have to pay big to keep Corona in his position. Maraming “behind the scene” negotiations yan!

  40. chijap chijap

@xman isa ka pa tulad ni Jimeno.

So to you, an asset which you acquired is not an asset because you acquired it through a loan? (In her excuse, kaya daw dapat sa liability column lang yung condo).

So maybe you should take up accounting 101 as well.

  41. xman xman

Ang sisihin nyo yang si Noynoy at yong mga bataan nya na walang ginawa sila kundi mag Noynoying for the last two years.

  42. xman xman

Eh si Noynoy ang pork barrel nya for just one year ay 68 BILLION pesos plus another 68 BILLION pesos pork barrel for the year 2012.

Ang 100 Million pesos na ninakaw ni Corona for the last 10 years o yong 136 Billion na ninakaw ni Noynoy plus 4 more years of Billions for Noynoy?

Dapat lang talaga na walang people’s power whatever the decision of the Senate would be. From the beginning that people power was a farce, a product of oligarch controlled movement that even until now has not proven anything concrete for the general welfare of the poor, the poorest of the Filipino people or even the Middle Class for that matter, the working class. We continue to exist on the basis of false propaganda of our government. Puro kaplastikan, puro papogihan, puro kalechehan. Alin, tingnan nyo nga whats happening outside the Senate, the Malacanang, the Congress.

  44. parasabayan parasabayan

This reminds me of the the famous MAYUGA REPORT when it was announced clearing all the Garci generals who supposedly rigged the 2005 elections for the pandak. The same timing, kwaresma din noon. Itong mga GANG OF 8 in in the SC nagpapakitang gilas, mga untouchables. Can we expect any justice? Just tiis na lang kayo if this hoodlums in robes prevail!

Hindi ako noynoyer. All I can say is that, in my last trip to PI, nakita ko ang mga construction sa roads na sobrang haba.

  59. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Incredible! Cuevas lost his cool and practically berated Senator Recto this afternoon. He was scolding the senator for jumping to unfounded conclusions. And Recto was just asking questions to clarify things in his mind.

If it were the prosecution who behaved like that, they would have been cited in contempt, insulted, etc, etc. But when it is Cuevas he gets away with it.

Cuevas is getting short tempered. He is thrashing around… in panic mode. Desperado na. Nowhere to turn. No way out. All their explanations just get the Coronas in deeper trouble, like in quicksand. Lies upon lies gets them nowhere.

But that is not my point. My point is why is Cuevas allowed by the senators to behave like that and not get penalized or disciplined? Such a blatant bias against the prosecution and such obvious fear of Cuevas.

    Such idiocy from this bunch.

Lito Atienza is an idiot or a liar.

When a person comes to you representing a corporation, you of course (with correct credential) entertain discussion with the representative.

However if you issue the cheque, you issue it to the corporation, which owns and is the seller, not to the agent or representative.

Ikaw ba, when you buy a condo, sa broker ka ba nagbabayad or sa Developer?

Enrile had to step in and scold Atienza.

The discussion is at around the 15 minute mark at this link http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/video/nation/03/22/12/cristina-corona-was-basa-guidotes-agent

  63. Parang nakikita ko na! Si Sister Flory kaya ang heroine?

“In the following spirit drawing, we invoked the ancestors to give their take on the outcome of the Corona impeachment trial in the Philippines. This was done January 16, 2012 at Brooklyn, New York.

    http://sanpascualcentennialplus.net/2012/03/21/san-pascual-baylon-divination-the-world-premier/

“There is a figure of a creature lying face up, incapacitated and seemingly lifeless, indicating Corona himself. To the left is a female figure with hair morphing into a flag, indicating a heroine As in a female hero will emerge. Also on the bottom left is a chicken running shocked or in a state of agitation.”

Corona co-mingled the wife’s corporation’s money with his.

When they deposited the big sum of money in the thief’s bank accounts, the money was not held in TRUST anymore. If indeed the intent was to treat the large sum as money in trust for the corporaton, nagbukas dapat sila ng separate na bank account labelled as such not in the thief justice’s name but in Christina’s name and it could have been labelled as the corporation’s money. The intent to own that money as their own is glaring. This is committing a crime and poised to get away with it!

  65. parasabayan parasabayan

The thief justice is not even in the corporation’s board, unless gagawa na ngayon si Christina ng isang resolution to that effect. He is not authorized to hold that money!

    Where did P34.7M go?

Enrile/impeachment court still does not know.

Sabi ni Recto: ” …based on the documents the senators have seen, BGEI’s P34.7 million was initially deposited in Landbank.

Cuevas, who “remained coy on where the money went”, said: “That is not clear, your honor. There is an allegation, but there is no evidence to that effect.”
    __

  67. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

    #75:

    Chi, agree.

Cuevas fell ill.. vertigo daw. So who wouldn’t get dizzy and ill-tempered trying to come up with palusots that crumble at the mere whiff of the winds.

Cuevas’s greatest fear is putting Renato and Cristina on the stand.

When the whole nation is watching your legal performance (former SC justice ka pa naman)and your reputation as hot shot lawyer seems to be crumbling around you, you get desperate.. and start snarling and accusing those who ask even mere clarifying questions of you.. as unfair.

And then you threaten to walk or call for a mistrial? Is that the last option?

  68. chi chi

Oo nga, Phil. It is evident that the loooong trial is taking its toll on old Cuevas’ health. Besides that, he easily becomes grumpy and pikon.

Imagine nga naman, his reputation at stake here. I can see this Corona case as Cuevas’ waterloo.

The defense is clearly lost, and at a loss these days. Even the Harvardian Jimeno becomes bobo.

  69. chijap chijap

don’t count the defense just out yet. it all boils down to the numbers.

  70. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Yes, that’s true. all they need is 8 votes.

There’s Joker, Miriam, Marcos… sure na sure na yan.

    5 na lang.

  71. Don’t be sure of Miriam. Remember PNoy nominated her to the International Criminal Court.

  72. chi chi
