We will miss Sen. Miriam

There is no truth to the malicious talk that Malacañang ordered the Department of Foreign Affairs to work hard for Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago election to the International Criminal Court because they are worried that she would block the conviction of Chief Justice Renato Corona who was impeached by the House of Representatives last Monday.

Santiago was elected Tuesday as judge in the International Criminal Court, the female judge from a developing Asian country to hold a seat in that international body.

“I will be the first Filipino to sit there. Plus, I will be the first Asian from a developing country. So this is an honor for the Philippines actually and for President Aquino who nominated me,” Santiago said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel.

Reports said she topped first round with 79 out of 104 votes, making her the first to be elected out of 18 candidates vying for 6 seats in the ICC Judicial Division.

“It’s really an achievement of our people there in the UN. It’s really our Department of Foreign Affairs that needs to be congratulated,” she said.

We will miss Miriam and her colorful quotes.

So quotable is she that there are several websites that contains her unforgettable quotes. Number one is her calling a congressman who delivered a privilege speech criticizing criticizing her “fungus face.”
We love her for saying things we would like to say but could not muster the courage to do so like when she said during the Senate hearing on the $329-million NBN deal that: “China invented civilization in the East, but as well it invented corruption for all of human civilization.”

She had to apologize for that later but the point was made.

That’s another admirable thing about Miriam. She does not hesitate to apologize or take back her words if she realized she had erred. Like when she said at the height of EDSA Tres, “I will jump headfirst from a helicopter in Luneta if Estrada gets removed from power.” When Estrada was indeed ousted, she said, “I lied”. Funny, isn’t it?”

When her name was taken off from the shortlist of candidates to be chief justice of the Supreme Court, she unleashed an avalanche of adjectives: “I am irate. I am foaming at the mouth. I’m homicidal. I’m suicidal. I’m humiliated, debased, degraded. And not only that, I feel like throwing up to be living my middle years in a country of this nature. I am nauseated. I spit in the face of Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban and his cohorts in the Supreme Court.”

She created a tempest when she was head of the Commission on Immigration and Deportation. Asked if she got death threats, she replied, “I eat death threats for breakfast!” She added, “Death is only a state of thermodynamic equilibrium!”

But good news. Miriam said she will not be immediately leaving the Philippine Senate.

In an interview with ABS-CBN, she said, “I don’t have to resign immediately. People think that once I am elected I have to take the first plane out to The Hague and sit in a court. No. I will take my oath of office in March together with 6 other new judges.” The post has a term of nine years.

Santiago explained that the new ICC judges cannot assume office immediately “until we are officially called to report for work”.

“There are 18 judges in the ICC. The rule is, once a judge has participated in the trial of a case, he has to stay beyond his retirement date, until after the trial is finished.”

“That is why I will not leave the Philippine Senate immediately. I might stay for 6 months or a year or more. I can continue my work in the Senate but once I am called to The Hague I will resign,” she said.

The Philippine Senate will never be the same without Sen. Miriam Santiago.

Hahaha! 🙂

I will surely miss Miriam’s body gestures and kakuwanan, hehehe! She’s a pride to us pinoys by bagging the ICC post.

We will miss her humor for sure!

When she ran again for the senate, she affiliated herself with all parties. That says it all. She has no loyalty to anyone but herself. It also means she is independent. She may have been seen much too many times with the pandak but I do not think she protected the pandak when she was wrong.

If Corona’s impeachment is weak, she will not hesitate to vote against the impeachment.

Miriam for sure will spice up the international court room. The international judges will actually be amused and not irked just like we do.

Well, good luck to Miriam aka BRENDA.
Sana naman ay huwag ka magkalat doon.

Good riddance anyway, minus one vote for Corona during his impeachment. Yehey!

  9. She will be sitting on a tribunal that will be dealing with the most heinous of all crimes in the entire history. These include:

Financial Tyranny involving thousands of $Trillion
    – Bogus War on Terror
    – Medical Conspiracy

I don’t think magkakalat siya doon. She’s just bored as hell trying to please highly brainwashed populace.

Amen. Huwag naman sana siyang mag “foaming in the mouth.”

You underestimate the Filipino people, and you overestimate the powers of whoever that is that can brainwash a populace. If you’re familiar at all with psychology you’ll even say its downright impossible.
Do you even know that its easier to hypnotize intelligent people than dunces?

One very important question to be asked is “what does her psychiatrist say about her ability to cope with stress?”

Sure, we are proud of her achievement. But for how long?

At any rate, we wish her luck and good mental, emotional health.

No doubt she’s an interesting character. And has authored and supported significant bills during her more lucid moments. But one cannot easily forget her rabid support of Erap particularly during his impeachment trial . And her immediate embrace of pandak (and later full support) after recognizing her evil forces triumphed in the end. She was even included in almost all foreign junk tours of pandak. And she continues to rant off advice to pandak, and publicly in the media at that, how to legally escape from the cases she’s facing (even advising her to go to UN Human Rights Commission, hire ‘better’ lawyers – like Mendoza perhaps?). She’s not really that far off from other dirty politicians. Her ‘officially-declared ‘networth (as of 2009) is about P87 million, which should raise some questions. And I don’t find her public outbursts funny. If at all, they are merely symptoms of psychological imbalance.

Miriam is the Philippines’ contribution to the world….of comedy. The ICC will be renamed The Insanely Comic Court, emphasis on insane.

But it’s good that Miriam is going away. She has been a cruel joke on the Filipino for too long.

“The Philippine Senate will never be the same without Sen. Miriam Santiago.”

    Thank God!

    Goodluck to Miriam again.

All the best to Miriam……<3 🙂

Miriam is the first Asian and Pinoy to sit at ICC.

I will miss her. She has great sound bytes. Someone very close to me, took the same flight she had from New York. They were quite impressed with her_albeit, they were unanimous in saying that her giggles and antics were missing during the long flight. She was very accommodating and game in posing for photo souvenirs. Also Heart E. was with her who impressed co-passengers as well.
In order not to miss Sen. Miriam too much, I am hoping that she would update us from time to time of cases she is hearing, especially those involving dictators and crimes against humanity.
    Congratulations Sen. Miriam. Godspeed.

Hi Chi. Heart Evangelista, a constant companion of Sen. Miriam, especially in her RH Bill tour of campus and other fora. Perhaps she is showing the ropes to Heart, in case she jumps into the political arena.

  20. kapatid kapatid

    Thanks Ellen. Yeah movie actress.

Salamat Ellen at kapatid! Good for Heart E., may she learn the good side of politics from her mentor Miriam. 🙂
