China fired at Filipino fishermen in Jackson atoll

Update:

Portion of the June 4, 2011 Statement of the Department of Foreign Affairs On the Presence of Chinese Vessels In the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea)

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) conveyed to the Chinese Embassy on June 2 its protest over the increasing presence and activities of Chinese vessels including naval assets in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

The DFA noted that these actions of Chinese vessels hamper the normal and legitimate fishing activities of the Filipino fishermen in the area and undermines the peace and stability of the region.

The actions of the Chinese vessels in Philippine waters are serious violations of Philippine sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction and also violate the ASEAN-China Declaration of Conduct on the South China Sea.

June 2, 2011 Statement from the Chinese Embassy in Manila:

China holds a clear and consistent position on the South China Sea issue. The reported “incursion of Chinese ships” is not true. It’s only China’s marine research ship conducting normal maritime research activities on the South China Sea.

Placemark on Google map shows location of Jackson atoll in the disputed Spratlys group of islands.Jackson Atoll is 140 NM from Palawan
“This is Chinese Warship 560. You are in the China territory. Leave the area immediately.”

Upon hearing this warning through a marine band radio, three Philippine boats fishing in Quirino, or Jackson atoll, a Philippine-claimed islet off Palawan in the disputed Spratly Islands, scampered away.

But the Chinese warship still fired three shots at the vessels F/V Jaime DLS, F/V Mama Lydia DLS and F/V Maricris 12. The Philippine Navy later identified the Chinese warship as Dongguan, a Jianghu-V Class missile frigate.

The incident in the South China Sea happened on Feb. 25—before March when the Philippine-commissioned seismic vessel was reportedly harassed in Reed Bank in western Palawan and before the Chinese vessels laid steel posts and a buoy in May in the Amy Douglas (Iroquois) Bank southwest of Reed Bank which Manila said is within its 200-mile exclusive economic zone.

This is really alarming but expected from China the bully who is known to flex its muscles whenever they want to occupy a territory, e.g. Taiwan, Hongkong, Mongolia, Tibet. Lahat ng borders kanila.

Ganyan ang ginawa nila sa Tibet even if the conflict was not yet settled out, ginawan na nila ng mga structures from the remotest areas to Lhasa, patay lahat ang magreklamo na nasa loob ng Tibet.

It won’t be long when the contested areas are already China, and just what happened to Sabah goodbye na lang if the leadership will not assert its claim.

Swapang!

A warship firing on fishing vessels? I say this is pure muscle flexing by a bully! Our bright kids from the DFA should now have the chance to earn their money by thinking, strategizing and recommending to Prez Noy on what should be done to stop this In-your-face bullying! The UN is there, The International Court is there, etc. I say we should use ALL venues to redress our grievance to this greedy bully! I hate Bullies!

  3. Becky Becky

Agree with Guido. I hate bullies too.

If we don’t have the arms, we have the voice. DFA is correct in doing all these protests.

Unlike before when we purposely closed our eyes because GMA was thinking of the mapagkaperahan with the Chinese, now we are not keeping quiet.

    Phil Cruz – June 3, 2011 5:46 pm

Are you expecting any? Take note those representing the left are true blooded natural born pinoys. Who do you think fund them? They are, if given the opportunity to govern, with similar characteristics like our government in different forms. It all depends on who leads and objectives when governing.
In my view, China’s claim to the islands is historic and the rest claimants, including our country, is based on borders, being part of palawan, in the case for our country. Vietnam has also historical claim including Taiwan being china with a different government. Don’t know about brunei. Trouble comes when one country claims it all knowing it difficult to really determine and define borders. With history included to the mix. it clouds the whole issue. Best way to really handle this is too share these islands between claimants or divide it. Question is how? and who will be partial enought for everyone to benefit.
Hope our country will assert it rights and continue to assert until such time we can or partial enough to participate in a collective sharing of the islands when agreed on by all claimants. Diplomatic protest is not enough, we have to work hard and focus to be always proactive to assert our rights. UN can’t do anything. History have shown it. Even US can’t, its not in their interest or capability to do so at this time. Only us pinoys can and we should intelligently.

If I may, what exactly do you have in mind olan? Thanks!

  12. olan olan

My two cents…We are only claiming what are ours, and not the whole things and we should be very clear about it to China and the whole world in any forum possible. We should stand on our ground and let the whole world know that China is wrong in their claim and that they are bullying us to submission by not letting us do things that we should in our islands. We should do this and expose China diplomatically. Put them on the spot using diplomacy as they use diplomacy defining their claim and at the same time chase us away from our islands using threats and military might. We should also involve other countries, get their sympathy and support on our side while we build. Make them understand that we are a sovereign worth supporting. In any case, time will come we have to rise up to depend what is ours whether we can or not.

  13. Guido Guido

Thanks olan! My line of thinking too, although how I wish we have our own fleet of warships e.g. cruisers, destroyers, carriers, subs, but then if we have those, I am sure China wouldn’t be bullying us anymore and we wouldn’t be humiliated every now and then!

It is also worth mentioning that that there is an increase in number of fresh PMA graduates electing to join the Phil Navy so it would help when push comes to shove, “whether we can or not”!

If Chinas’ claim is indeed historic, then it can also claim the entire s.e. asia, japan and california. We are going against a permanent member of the security council.

China always claims history about every claim. They can always support such if any leader is as ganid as gloria macapal arroyo. Konting pera lang, lusot na. May aangal ba, hmmmmm?

Me too yun nga lang tayo wala tayo nun. But If our military is intelligent, i think we can still depend our islands using shoulder fired missiles (stingers) against their aircrafts, mines against their installation, snipers against their foot soldiers, and fast craft to escape their navy’s. The islands are small and uninhabited, no one lives there. We just need to sabotage whatever the aggresor is doing in our territories. If they build, we destroy! we’ll make them pay and spend resources after resources! and let the rest of our kapinuyan, americans and Nato depend palawan.

Training is key and cooperation with the vietnamese and the malaysians. But it’s always much better di na humantong dito.

  23. Statement of the Department of Foreign Affairs On the Presence of Chinese Vessels In the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) conveyed to the Chinese Embassy on June 2 its protest over the increasing presence and activities of Chinese vessels including naval assets in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).
This protest follows a series of protests already filed by the DFA since the Reed Bank incident in March.
As a matter of course, the DFA files verbal or written protests as soon as it receives confirmed and actionable reports from the Department of National Defense.

Nevertheless, both sides agreed to keep the channels of communication open and continue dialogue on the South China Sea issue.

    Mr. Olan, Mr. Guido,

Training of our military and cooperation with any other country are not enough to deter the Insiks from bullying the Pinas if soldiers, most especially some generals are not thinking of fattening their own pockets in preparation for their retirement.

Mas maige sigurong bigyang diin natin ang COMMITTED SERVICE AND LOVE OF COUNTRY para mas magkaroon ng kulay ang ating pakikibaka upang mapangalagaan ang ating soberenya.

In some news report, China denied that it deployed naval vessels.

Simple lang yan. Buy some of those video monitors that they install in the malls, and in parking lots. Try to buy the ones with the highest resolution, and find those with zoom capability. Mayroong mga home type monitors that can be viewed on the net.

Dahil poor tayo, we can emulate other poor warriors. Sabi ng isang rebelde laban kay Qaddafi, google earth daw ang gamit nila to look for Qaddafi’s troops. Totoo naman, yung paid account can give you real time pics.

China is particular about its image. But if it faces the prospect of losing face, it may be deterred.

He who chooses the weapons wins the fight.

The problem with China is that inspite of being an economic giant, it still find ways to save its resources by turning to weaker territories’ premises. Just like the US it hated so much, China wants its presence in the region always felt.

Are you sure? I doubt that they HATE the US so much. maybe more like competing power, else walang economic cooperation, technology transfer, etc. similar to the ex-soviet-US cold war era.

Sometime one has to understand point of view of others inorder to know them and/or reach an understanding with them. I don not think China is really like that. they have a chance to takeover Combodia and Vietnam but they did’nt. They went in North Korea but they withdraw. They are staking their claim on the island as we do together with Vietnam, malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan. They have not yet enforce their will on the islands. But I will not be surprise that if they want to they can.

  33. MPRivera MPRivera

The fact is that the Philippines is militarily WEAK in all aspects. As I have said it before, Pinas has an air force without planes, a navy without ships, and an ill-equipped army under fire and led by (some ) generals who dabble in “fund conversions” (thanks to massive corruption in the armed forces).
Under these trying times, we have to make do with what we have and stop looking across the Pacific for Uncle Sam. Because we obviously cannot be offensively aggressive to ward off advances made by China, at least let us stand our ground by any means possible at our immediate disposal
with a firm resolve that we will not be bulied. If diplomacy is the only way to go, then so be it. If (at all) an armed conflict is initiated and cannot be avoided, then it is but natural for a knee-jerk reaction on our part and stand firm on it. That way, the international comunity will surely take notice. The Vietnamese stood their ground in their “pajamas” against America and won. Am I to believe that Vietnam is a lot tougher than us ?
