Update: Social Services Secretary wrote Manny V. Pangilinan, owner of TV5
I’m in a dilemma about posting this very cruel video here because it’s like adding to the humiliation of Jan-jan. But at the same time, we cannot be talking and enjoining people to join hands in putting a stop to this deplorable practice without showing the incident.
I’m reposting here the letter of Cathy Babao-Guballa about the incident.
I captured a shot in the video. If you want to see the whole video here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YRCxh9q64w. It was too painful for me.
Dearest Jan-jan,
My heart broke as I watched you cry on television. You should never have been there in the first place.
There are many people to blame for the humiliation that you went through. What took place should have never happened if people had… been doing their jobs, if people had only known better. First of all, I cannot understand how your tita would teach you to dance that way!! You are only six years old and what do you know about the world? I’m sure you are a very bright, sensitive, and talented little boy, that much I could see.
That’s another reason why it was so painful for me to watch you suffer. You were, in fact, the only one in that studio who knew that what was happening was so very wrong. You rely on your parents and your guardians to take care of you. They need to ensure that you grow up to become healthy in mind, body and spirit. But by allowing you to suffer that way, they miserably failed you.
It’s not all about the money, Jan-jan. The dignity of every child must be upheld. By allowing you to perform that way, they trampled on you and made you feel so small. I could see the fear and embarrassment in your eyes. It was undeniable. If there was only some way to rescue you from that moment, I’m sure every parent worth their salt would have done so.
Poverty must never be an excuse to humiliate people. A child must be allowed to be a child. This terrible experience has probably left a mark on your soul and my prayer is that you will not be damaged by it forever. And this is why this insanity has to stop.
I have no explanation for the way that the crowd treated you that evening. I feel very sad at what we have become as a people. That these adults would actually find it entertaining to see a young boy like you shamed that way. That these so-called adults did not see beyond the lewd gyrations to see the little boy with warm tears running down his face. It pains me that we have become so desensitized as a people, that we would allow a child to suffer that way. But for me, the biggest fault that evening falls on Willie Revillame’s shoulders. I have no explanation for what possessed him to egg on the crowd, to say those words to you, to liken you to a burlesk dancer. Willie had the power in that moment to stop, no, to prevent you from even performing your dance number. Had he done so, he may have even redeemed himself in a way. But what did he do? He gave you the money that you perhaps came for so that you could give it to your parents who for the life of me perhaps did not know any better than to send you there. And he egged you on…
Willie, a parent many times over, and a grandfather – did he not see the faces of his children or of his grandson when he was egging you on to dance a second or a third time? That he found enjoyment in watching you, and poking fun at you as you cried and looked so miserable was to my mind inexcusable. You are a child, and you are supposed to be loved and protected. Your right to protection is provided for under the law. I am so sorry that we failed to do this for you.
The image of your face has been running through my head over the last couple of days. What happened to you that day must not go to waste. If we can save even one other child from having to go through what you had to endure then all these efforts we are now doing will not be in vain.
We can no longer turn back the hands of time and take away your pain, Jan-jan, but we can always give a deeper meaning to the humiliation you went through it by working together, hand in hand, to ensure that no other child, or minor, for that matter will ever have to suffer the way you did on national television.
I hope someday when you recall this moment, it will no longer bring you shame. Your tears will not go to waste. In doing what you did, before millions of people in and out of the studio, you woke us all up and in the process, perhaps saved so many other children from ever having to go through what you did. You are a brave little boy Jan-jan, always remember that.

Ellen,
Just saw the video. I’ve never seen this show nor its host (I suppose the host is that ugly, revolting man called Willing Willie?) before except on this vid clip. Is that a Philippine variety show for the general public? If so, I found it incredibly absurd and absolutely nauseating.
Encouraging a child to perform a lurid dance like a stripteaser for a fee is similar to committing child abuse and child pornography. And it went on and on and on and on!!! The host humiliated and abused that child, and for what? What was so funny about that? It was an immoral act in the extreme.
The worst part was the host announcing to the audience, and I suppose to people in homes watching the show that JanJan had to perform the lewd dance as some kind of a job — for which the kid was rewarded with money, because his family was poor was disgusting in the extreme. That’s child abuse akin to molestation!!! And the audience, who I suppose represent the average Filipinos of today, the disgusting audience, found that funny! Extraordinary morals! No wonder the average and common Pinoy hasn’t risen above the mud they live in — they have no sense of decency.
The title of this article should be: “Willie, why did you publicly molest JanJan?”
If that sequence had taken place in a private room, i.e., Wille, an adult male, making the child, particularly a 6-year old boy, do a lewd and sexually-charged dance to the beat of some execrable music for a fee, the adult male could be suspected and open to charges of paedophilia and attempted sexual molestation on a minor.
Ellen, is this the same fellow who was hosting a show that killed many people in the audience (can’t remember exactly what happened anymore)? I think you posted something about this Willie pervert…
Another title for this article: Willie, the pervert!
I was surprised to see that the audience seemed to heve enjoyed the show. They should have walked out…at ang mga magulang naman seemed proud sa ginawa ng kanilang anak…does wily willie have a sense of decency in him?..mukhang walang wala…his sense of humor? seems to be so low…bata lang si Jan Jan and someday he will realize what he did…and I will not be surprised if willie will go to the gutters…ang dapat mapahiya million times over ay si Willie at makakarma siya…he has fathered a couple of children…this thing that he did will someday boomerang on him..and his kawawang mga anak at apo…magbabayad din si Willie…in the mean time let him enjoy his love for money, let him enjoy his thing…everything happens for a reason and something good will come out of it…babagsak rin yon si Willie and Jan Jan ikaw ang magtatagumpay sa huli..
well, its the fault of abs cbn, they should have nipped it in the bud during the bruohaha with sucaldito, its the fault of the viewing public supporting the sponsors and the show, what do you expect, its a 3rd world country
The poor is almost irrelevant here actually!
This particular sequence should be used to nail the bastard because it was all about child abuse with implicit sexual connotations, the exploitation of a 6-year old child for entertainment! (For the life of me, what was so funny about that show anyway) What is equally disgusting is that this show attempts to trivialise the idea that perverting a child is normal in the Philippines! That it’s normal for a 6-year old child to perform sexually-charged dances for a fee! That is what this country should revolt against!
The boy was manipulated into doing it and encouraged by those running the show. The boy was not proud of what he did for sure.
Rudolfo — where I sit, dampot kaagad siya ng pulis!
Martina,
I think you are right “The boy was not proud of what he did for sure.” Actually the revolting and pervert host acknowledge the child was in tears because he realised how hard it was to work for a living or to earn a wage… But he didn’t have to be complicit in exploiting a child doing sexually charged performance for his entertainment and the entertainment of equally pervert and revolting adults!
Many many years ago, I had a weekly TV show (govt TV) in Pinas (during martial law) and my producers decided to create a noon-time show for me with another teen-ager (I think his purpose was to kind of compete with a show that was hosted by Tina Revilla if I remember rightly) related to food eating contest with Johny Wilson and Bert Marcelo as co-hosts. I think I did 6 shows but felt couldn’t hide my disgust of the theme and the format and duly resigned and left the country for good. My producers who probably wanted to build me up were aghast but I told them that I found nothing remotely entertaining in making poor people compete in eating the most food. I simply abhor all forms of entertainment that cater to debauchery.

certainly, child protection is needed here…
notice the trigger of the boy’s crying? it’s the music…and then the dance which can be perceived as an act beyond the free will of the child.
i hope ma’am cathy has elevated this case to child protection agencies. i believe she is aware of this considering she’s an advocate of children’s health (i expect psychological health included).
anyway, i’ll presume this case will not go lightly to ma’am cathy considering she’s already part of mtrcb (if my google search is correct):

Baycas2, is that so?
Good… Cathy must focus on the issue here. It is the public exploitation of a child, the potential corruption of minors, trivialising acts of perversion by an adult/s on a child in public, etc etc.
this is a plain and simple case of child abuse…exploiitation of children in the third world…abs/cbn should drop out all of Willie;s programs no matter how many millions of money he may bring into their business…and the sponsors of hisn show should witdhraw from their sponsorship….and if they don’t, don’t use and buy their products…madlang pipol you can do it…boycott willie;s shows…hindi nakakatawa at nakakatuwa ang show ni Willie..have more shows that would entertain..kung walang mag sponsor sa program ni Willie babagsak rin ‘yon,,,ABS/CBN have better taste than that in entertainmnet…Boycott! boycott!boycott!
A show should be pulled off the air with finality, the producers and the host slapped with fines and even charged in court when it features a debauched adult feasting on and deriving great satisfaction out of the misery of a 6-year old child pushed to perform lurid, sexually-charged dance for a fee! As someone on Facebook said, that’s stepping into paedophilia territory!
Will lie R evil la me… kaya walang konsesya talaga!
Ganito na ba kababa ang moral ng mga pinoy? and yet we aspire to become a great nation?Righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any people.
Willie must be banned forever. He has done so much damage to the entertainment industry and the poor. He keeps exploiting the poor. Many have died and suffered because of him.
The parents are also to blame for allowing their kids with some even pushing them to join the singing or dancing contests for money. If these kids are lucky to be selected, they forgo their studies. Parents don’t mind as long as their kids make money for them.
I’m at a loss here, I couldn’t stop my tears from falling, while looking at the video, I can’t even finish it. I have young boys of my own. I just couldn’t comprehend how people can allow this, most are even laughing.
Have we really fallen this low? May God forgive us all, and what is the CBCP doing about this?
Hi all,
Tama si Rudolfo, it’s a Channel 5 or TV5 show, and not ABS-CBN with Janjan performed on Willing Willie aired last March 12, 2011.
I too have a son and it’s revolting what they did to Janjan. I think MTRCB and the Child Protection Agencies concerned should step into this matter…
Jug, re “I’m at a loss here, I couldn’t stop my tears from falling, while looking at the video,” — my skin was crawling as I watched it. And I must have looked a sight with my eyes ready to pop out of their sockets in disgust, as it went on and on and on.
Sira ulo at ogag talaga yang Willie na yan. One thing I observed in the video. I think there’s a gov’t official (couldn’t recall his name) among the audience laughing uncontrollably and at one point wiping his tears. Another thing, why co-host Shalani (PNoy’s ex) allow this to happen knowing her as someone who’s decent and all?
Pathetic! Parang binugaw nila ang bata. Grabe talaga!
when will the authorities put a stop to willie revillame and those like him who do not observe basic respect for others – poor or rich, young or old, with or without handicap, good-looking or not?
btw, under sec 3b of ra7610, child abuse refers to the maltreatment, whether habitual or not, of the child which includes any of the following:
(1) Psychological and physical abuse, neglect, cruelty, sexual abuse and emotional maltreatment;
(2) Any act by deeds or words which debases, degrades or demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of a child as a human being;
(3) Unreasonable deprivation of his basic needs for survival, such as food and shelter; or
(4) Failure to immediately give medical treatment to an injured child resulting in serious impairment of his growth and development or in his permanent incapacity or death.
under (1) and (2) above, the show and its members can be deemed guilty of child abuse.
Thank you Ellen for posting the letter of Cathy Babao Guballa. The video was really very revolting and very revealing. Revolting in a way that they took advantage of the innocence of the boy. He may not have totally understood the sexual lewdness in the dancing, but since there were tears during the dancing it just showed that he was not happy doing it.
It was also revealing that the adults in the audience were cheering the boy and asking him to do more of the dancing. It appears that we have not matured, we could not even discern what is proper and respectable for a six year old child.
Since it is already in the You Tube, Jan Jan is already scarred for life for a sum of P10,000.
The DSWD, CHR, MTCRB and even the Church must take action on this otherwise there will be other Jan Jans that will be in the show because there are parents who might be interested in selling the decency of their son or daughter for short time of fame and for a measly sum of money.
The last time I had viewed that Willie was way, way back during the interview of kids, young boys and he keep insisting what were their fathers’ jobs? One of the boys just could not give an answer and he keep insisting and you could feel the hurt inside that boy…he may have not known his father or had a very sad experience with him..nobody knew…and the other before that was the performance of the kids doing the difficult number of break-dancing after just days of being circumcised..I could swear that I could reach that fellow that momnent of time, he may not be around to this to jan jan. and that stampede.
Didn’t the church condemn this show of Willie?… I hope hindi sila nanuod..By church, hindi lang Catholics…how about the other religious group? wala ba silang action na gagawin with regards to such entertainment? o baka nag enjoy at nagtawa rin sila sa kannilang pinanuod…boycott Willie…don’t use his pabango..mabahong mabaho yon perfume (Willie ba ang trademark?). ilaglag ang kanyang show.don’t patronize the prodcut he endorses…ilaglag siya sa kanyang Willie Tower…for balikbayans don’t buy units in that complex…ibagsak ang entertainment shows kasama ang mga company sponsors…madlang pipol show your power…ibagsak ang programa ni Willie…sponsors pull out your ads..kaya ganyan si Willie, kasi dahil rin sa inyo mga sponsors..boycott Willie’s shows! boycott the products he endorses…boycott! boycott! boycott!
I wish that after Revillame’s inhuman treatment of this little boy, the TVworld and advertisers would finally put him to rest. Good thinking pinoys should pressure them to drop ugly Willie for the sake of pinoys sanity. Kung hindi, ang buong kapinuyan watching his show will turn into retards and inutile…valueless like uncivilized Willie.
That sweet lovely girl Shalani (with beautiful ladies Ellen and Charmaine in a photo at FB) must resign as co-host of Revillame pronto or she will be molested and corrupted by this television monster soon.
Never did I watch ugly Willie, picture pa lang sa online news nakakasuka na!
Who’s employing that ugly pig ba, si Manny Pangilinan (channel 5)? If so, MP must kill him na!
To the parents, please don’t force your kids to perform…let them enjoy being children.
Willie is a pathetic piece of S**T!!! A low life who preys on the weak and the poor. He should be banned from TV and the viewing public!!! Really disgusting!!!
I’m really appalled at by the way his supporters are defending him. They say it’s all for fun, that his detractors are getting back at him for the ratings. WTF! A kid is being humiliated in public and they say it’s for fun? fun for whom? It’s not about network wars anymore, it’s CHILD ABUSE!!!

Social Services Secretary Dinky Soliman wrote to Manny Pangilinan, owner of TV5:
March 28, 2011
MR. MANNY V. PANGILINAN
Chairman
ABC Development Corporation
Dear Mr. Pangilinan:
This is with regard to the 12 March 2011 episode of your show “Willing Willie”, which was brought to my attention by several concerned citizens and groups. In the said episode, a six year-old boy named Jan-Jan Estrada was made to repeatedly perform dance moves usually done by adult dancers in indecent shows. The poor child was in tears and looked scared the entire time, as show host Willie Revillame poked fun at him and the audience laughed and cheered.
Under Republic Act No. 7610, also known as “Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act”, the term “child abuse” includes the following acts: “psychological and physical abuse, neglect, cruelty, sexual abuse and emotional maltreatment,” and “any act by deeds or words which debases, degrades or demeans the intrinsic worth and dignity of the child as a human being.”
Given that definition, it is unmistakable that what happened last 12 March 2011 to Jan-Jan Estrada was child abuse.
Persuading a little child to dance sexy adult dances in exchange for a measly sum, while he is being laughed at and ridiculed will definitely traumatize the child. What kind of values are we teaching our children through these shows, especially after Willie Revillame pushed Jan-Jan to do something against his will and then told him that it’s alright because he will receive money in exchange for it?
Given the foregoing, I am requesting that:
(1) Young children not be allowed to appear in Willing Willie and other similar shows in the network that cashes in on poverty;
(2) Host Willie Revillame be rebuked for his insensitive and deplorable actions.
There are limits to children appearing on television, and clearly, your 12 March 2011 episode did not respect the rights of the child and traumatized the six year-old boy. I also wish to raise my concern that the show tends to cash in on the plight of the poor. There are other ways of helping the poor without having to degrade their dignity and earn money out of it.
I hope you can act on this swiftly and I would appreciate a response from your good office.
Thank you.
Very truly yours,
(sgd.)

Let’s wait and see what DSWD Dinky Soliman’s action plan to ban child abuse and public humiliation in TV shows.

GMA-7″s interview with the father of Jan-jan:
Jan-Jan’s father speaks: ‘Maraming natuwa’
Most of the criticism about boy “macho dancer” Jan-Jan was aimed at TV host Willie Revillame, but a few angry reactions referred to the child’s parents who permitted him to be laughed at and humiliated on national TV.
GMA News Online tracked down Jan-Jan’s father, Jojo Estrada, a salon owner from Quezon City, who saw nothing wrong with the spectacle that earned his son a tidy P10,000, which was spent on a new Portable Sony PlayStation and bike.
On his son’s dance:
“Talent ‘yun ng anak ko, simula nung 4 years old sinasayaw nila ‘yun, kahit sa school pa. Ako’y tuwang-tuwa. Napaluha ako sa tuwa.”
On why the kid was crying and not smiling:
“Hindi siya naka-smile kasi wala siyang ngipin. Kaya naman siya umiyak kasi
natatakot siya kay Kapre Balingit!”
On the supposed ‘bastos’ nature of Jan-Jan’s gyrations:
“Sa akin hindi bastos. Basta sayaw ‘yan. Hindi alam ng bata kung bastos. Hindi
bastos ‘yun sa magulang. Kaya gusto ko makaahon sa hirap. Maging artista di ba?”
On the public reaction:
“Maraming natutuwa.
Willing Willie. Ganun katindi! Pasalamat nga ako kay Willie.”
On the P10,000 prize money:
“Tuwang-tuwa ‘yung bata.
I agree, pero to take advantage of their weaknesses is not the right thing to do. They (TV 5) have all the means to make things right, to make a difference. But sadly, they didn’t. 🙁
Tongue, when Willie saw the nature of the kid’s dance he should have stopped and did not ask Jan jan to dance again and again. It is the repetitive dancing and cheering on that made me puke.
I also realize that this is not just the fault of one but a collective one. This will just be another “macarena” and “otso-otso”, mawawala rin sa uso. It is too bad that Jan-jan became the face of this “dirty dancing” for kids his age.
That’s showbiz.
Will this event bring down the ratings of Willie’s show? No.
Will the studio audience stop coming to Willie’s shows? No.
Will organizers from the Pinoy communities abroad, especially in the US, stop bringing Willie’s circus there? No.
Tanong ko uli, nasaan ang problema?
I seldom watch this program unless I pass it when switching channels, but the other night (Monday?), SEVEN people EACH won, listen, ONE MILLION CASH, One SUV of an unpopular brand, and a house and lot package, courtesy of Villar’s Camella Homes. Villar was there to award the keys.
You think his fans would listen to our criticisms? You believe his regular watchers will switch over to Kris Aquino’s Price is Right because of some kid’s tasteless snake dance? And forego the chance of winning the next P1M cash-SUV-House and lot package?
I don’t think so.
Tongue, right on! By all means, let the show award cash prizes all they want, I’m all for it. In fact, adults can pretty much do what they want among themselves, denigrate, exploit, abuse each other, host could do what he wants etc., but to me there must be a condition sine qua non , adults should leave out certain sequences that involve inappropriate or as you say, tasteless sequences that directly involve 6-year olds.

Tongue, let them enjoy their kind of entertainment. But they should not involve minors doing inappropriate acts. There’s a law against it.
This is where the producer comes in. A stern warning from the producer should put the star in his place.
Note the many endorsement deals that were rescinded because the star no longer had a “wholesome” image – Michael Jackson, Kobe Bryant, Lindsay Lohan, etc.
Ganyan din sa pulitika, Don Imus, Howard Stern, etc.
Lately, you have Charlie Sheen.
Exactly, sax. If you want positive response, hit them where it hurts most. The advertisers can be forced to shy away by boycott.
But this has happened before, civil society threatens with boycott, but they don’t have the muscle to make it happen. In the end, things remain the same. The tweets and blogs don’t matter to advertisers, Nielsen surveys do.
Erap was unpopular with the upper crust they did everything to prevent him from winning but the masa were all for him. They resorted to unconstitutional means it turned out worse.
The masa will take Willie’s side on this I think, however much Tweets and status updates the “noisy minority” can manage to put out.
Those lower social classes are turning monolithic faster than the upper levels can merge their (self?) interest groups.
No one has answered my question, “nasaan ang problema”?

Oh yeah, and be more tolerable with the minors doing the same thing on another channel?
What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
Of course, it’s tasteless. It’s a six year old fully-clothed male gyrating while crying.
It’s different when you see Christine Reyes gyrating, boobs half-exposed, in scanty bottoms, teasing you with her shiny lips and sleepy eyes dancing to Usher. Instant woody, right there. Tasteless? NO. Delicious? YES!
My suggestion: For his penance, ask this pervert show host to dance the same dance he prodded the 6-yr old to do on national TV but attired only a g-string; he must do it continuously for the entire duration of his show.
I took a good look of the picture shown of Willie ang Jan jan…and noticed this contrast…willie na willing wili at tuwang tuwa..and jan jan na malungkot ang mukha at napapaiyak na..hy op talaga itong si willy willie…
nakakatuwa, daming mga madramang pinoy dito. kesyo malaswa etc..dami rin sumawsaw…lumabas na naman ang mga galit or inggit kay willie. ha ha ha thats phil. t.v. shows.
