Thoughts on 25 years after 1986 People Power

We are commemorating the 1986 People Power revolution, many refer to as EDSA 1.

If we refer to EDSA I and EDSA 2 as a gathering of people on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, that long stretch of road from Pasay City to Caloocan City, I would agree that’s accurate. Then we should also call the assembly of masses in the last days of April 2001 that culminated in the assault of Malacanang on May 1, 2001 EDSA 3. The crowd in April 2001 was definitely bigger than the civil society groups that ousted an elected president, Joseph Estrada, in Jan 2001 and installed in Malacanang Gloria Arroyo that turned out to be worse than Estrada in corruption and perversion of the law.

But if we mean the gathering of people yearning for a government that would serve the interest of the people rather than the selfish interest of the few in power, then there is only one EDSA – the 1986 gathering of people on EDSA from the gate of Camp Crame down to Ortigas Avenue to protect then Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile and then chief of the Philippine Constabulary Fidel Ramos who announced their withdrawal of support from then President Ferdinand Marcos, who had declared martial law and changed the Constitution to perpetuate himself, his wife and his group of cronies in power.

The most asked question as we celebrate 1986 People Power, did we achieve the dreams that brought us into a state of euphoria 25 years ago?

There is no question that democracy was restored with the ouster of Marcos and assumption by Cory Aquino of the presidency. Elections may not be the cleanest and orderly, but definitely there much more people participation than elections during the Marcos regime.

The number one beneficiary of the EDSA1 was media, which was of the casualties when Marcos declared martial law in September 1972.The control by Marcos of media underscored his recognition of the power of media for political change.

The essence of democracy is people participation. Democracy is only as strong as its people and media empowers people with information that helps them make choices.

The return of democracy restored press freedom. But protecting it is another thing.
Today media is being assaulted not only from outside forces (killing of journalists, the most blatant of which was the Ampatuan massacre, libel suits) but also from within in terms of degradation in quality of reporting and violation of ethics.

We have wasted a lot of the 25 years since we restored democracy in the country. As long as millions of Filipinos still live in poverty, we cannot say that we have achieved the dreams of EDSA 1.

Vice President Jejomar Binay’s reflection on EDSA1 touches on democracy and poverty. Excerpts:

“I will not tire of saying again and again: Democracy is nothing if it is not also democratizing wealth. Democracy cannot thrive in a society whose population groans in abject poverty.

“Every brilliant idea from anywhere, of whatever political color, all our minds and all our passions, must be put together in a strategy or program to address poverty. Right now I could think of these five approaches:

• An efficient bureaucracy that works like a well-oiled machine, starting with competent and caring front line services.

• Efficient systems and policies to make it easier for business and industry to prosper, and to attract more investment.

• The efficient utilization of national and local budgets to address the key concerns of the country – education, health, livelihood, disaster management, good local governance, and so on.

• Efficient stewardship of our natural resources so truly benefit our people while assuring the sustainability of the environment.

• Efficient implementation of our security objectives, with the military and the police free from political pressures, able to discharge their functions to the full, and focused solely on protecting our citizens.

“In other words, you have to do just about everything. Anyone wanting to take on the daunting responsibility of leading this country must consider everything.”

    well said,totally agree!

Also something must be done to lower the rate of Electricity as it discourage investment in the country (other factors equal) and would rather pick the neigbouring countries where it is cheaper…and it also make the country products soo costly other than stranggling the consumers even further…is this one of the EDSA spillover?

  3. vic,
the electric companies would attribute most of it as distribution loss or something, there is so much leeching from source to endusers and they charge that on top of regular fees. then maybe our power generation infrastructure is not as efficient we would like, maybe its time we went nuclear? Japan has several considering they are in a more earthquake prone area as we are.
the cost of power will certainly affect our BPOs and hamper local manufacturing industries.
we may need some transparency here, after Reyes less than stellar handling of the DOE, we’re still at a loss as to what we really need to do.

  4. Its not the EDSA, its what we do with our freedom that matters.

THE FILIPINO IS WORTH DYING FOR.

  7. I have to give it to Libya’s current crop of street protesters. They have not been cowed by automatic gunfire, planing in of African mercenaries, Chopper gunships and pro-government goons and soldiers firing at unarmed people. Thank God the fighter pilots refused to bomb/strafe the rallyists and defected to Malta instead.

It sure makes our EDSA revos just one big picnic after another.

An efficient bureaucracy that works like a well-oiled machine, starting with competent and caring front line services.—Sa dami nito at sa dami ng mga mapagsamantalang tao, lumala ang kurapsyon sa Pinas.

    • Efficient systems and policies to make it easier for business and industry to prosper, and to attract more investment.—Sa dami ng foreign investors, natabunan na ang mga local investors.

    • The efficient utilization of national and local budgets to address the key concerns of the country – education, health, livelihood, disaster management, good local governance, and so on.—May mga generals na nangupit, kaya pati mortars e dud, combat boots butas, peace keeping forces nasa kubo lang. Mga kalsada lalo na highways hindi matino. Sa education, malayo yung noon sa ngayon. Saan na ba ang kabataan ngayon? Marami nasa facbook.

    • Efficient stewardship of our natural resources so truly benefit our people while assuring the sustainability of the environment.—Totoo ba ito? O ibang bansa ang nakikinabang?

    • Efficient implementation of our security objectives, with the military and the police free from political pressures, able to discharge their functions to the full, and focused solely on protecting our citizens.—Kaya pala may mga nag-alburutong sundalo. Ang dami kasing nangungupit. May euro generals pa.

  12. The blog entry summarized the gains of EDSA into only 2: restoration of free press and elections.

But even these two are not as we would have wanted them to be. Media with its AC-DC journalists, unruly presscons, and unethical practices negates many of the gains of the free press.

Elections, likewise have deteriorated in terms of violence, rampant and openly-practiced large-scale vote-buying and cheating, I am not wont to conclude that the recent automated polls reflected the true vote count.

We must admit now that we failed EDSA and therefore begin to act and correct the apathy and indifference that followed it immediately.

Gising na, Pinoy, naiwan ka na.

try basing your views with a historical perspective or at least research background, please check out this book and see a more detailed research work on the impact of the Marcos rule on the military and how it still affects us today.

Si Macoy, he slept with the enemies of the state.

I agree. Its time we take responsibility for our actions, the failure of this nation is ih our hands.

  16. For bonggang bonggang Bongbong, is he taking drugs? Cocaine maybe? The Philippines another Singapore? Why? Did Lee Kuan Yew have resort to torture, mass murders, rewarding the military to the point of spoiling them? what economic gains did we have during martial law?
His father was a bullshitter, articulate, talked high fallutin, and people believed him in the beginning, may mga “The Philippines can be Great Again!” and he behaved like he was royalty (his family also).
We should have another mantra ” Never Again.”
What we want from our leaders is less rhetorics, less high fallutin words, more transparency, more humble, down to earth, in your face, this is the real score kind of communication…

  17. bonggang bonggang Bongbong is a bit stupid really, even the Singaporeans will say that we can’t copy them because our population and geography is so much different! compare 90million to 4-5million? imagine the variance in control?
we can aspire to be like but not actually be…we have to come up with our own and not copy form our seatmates, hala ka, cheating na naman yan! 🙂

Simula 2004, one of the worse or the worst investment destination in Southeast Asia ang Pinas.

Eighty-five percent of companies said bureaucratic red tape was the “worst investment feature” of the Philippines, followed by economic instability (76%), inconsistency in policies (73%), government attitude (65%), poor transport infrastructure (57%), difficulties in remitting foreign currency and exchange rate volatility (53%), and political instability (51%).

“Best features” include worker education level, 90% of companies surveyed said. Also, ability to speak English (84%), quality and quantity of middle management and technical people (83%), and comfortable local lifestyle (82%).

  19. parasabayan parasabayan

Malas lang natin at ang mga sumunod na presidente kay Marcos eh inuna muna nag mga bulsa nila, except Cory but she was too much of a US president.

  20. parasabayan parasabayan

Yes, Marcos was corrupt but he was the one who had done most of our infrestructures. Lahat na ng presidente after him, what have they accomplished? Nothing!

  21. Meron din naman tt, sa mga export processing zones, dati may Epson, we have Dole, Unifruittie, Sumifru, etc in the south, a nice big P&G plant in Canlubang, Nestle is expanding its operations, and some others.
But how long will they stay operating under high costs? That goes for the BPOs also?
India has been courting these big plantations (Dole, Unifruittie, etc) for years now and aleady there are pilot plantations there, the government is offering subsidy on water and power lang naman…

  22. psb,
sad to say we haven’t had a good president yet, marcos like arroyo hid behind infrastructure budgets their real intent-looting. then its a cycle of clean up, it gets dirty again, clean up, etc, etc. we cannot justify martial law or marcos no matter what we do or say, it was a period of setbacks albeit full of window dressing, he controlled the institutions, no check and balance, even the media at some point, that alone speaks volumes.
what we have right now is to restore our institutions full independent functions, no manipulation, no coercion, with tranpareancy and accountability as the order of the day.

  23. Besides, its not healthy to always look back to the “good old days” there is no time like the present and its our call to make it better every day, every generation. I wouldn’t want to go back in time and live during the Marcos years, I’d rather shoot myself through the heart.

  24. parasabayan parasabayan

The old man, was trully nationalistic and he did the best he could. Sa kakakain ng bagoong, nagka-kidney trouble tuloy. Since he was so sick, his vain wife Imelda and her relatives and the generals ,the likes of Angie Reyes, Garcia and Ligot ( the Vers etc…) took over and ransacked the coffers. Siyempre, kahit na malapit ng mamatay si Marcos, he still had the command responsibility. Siya ang masama. But look at all the infrastructures he made? No one ever came close to what Marcos did? Like any dictator, he was ousted but until now, to me, Marcos was the only president who connected all our main islands by roads that were really built very well! Now, all the roads are good only for a few years. Isang bagyo lang sira na. The bridges too! Because the crooked local politicians hire contractors who would give them all the “cut” they could get, never mind the quality. As a matter of fact, these national and local politicians made a career out of milking all these projects. They really do not like to make lasting infrastructures because come budget time, they can not justify the budget they are asking for!

  25. You’re right jug. I forgot to type corporate farming as one of the bigger employment generating industries, especially in the rural areas.

Manufacturing though was hardest hit with China’s cheap (but more efficient) labor the textile, garment, and electronics industries alone lost millions of jobs due to plant shutdowns and transfers.

One investment source the previous administration has snubbed is Europe. Compared to our neighbors, European FDIs are near nil.

  26. parasabayan parasabayan

At least amy pagasa pa siguro tayo. I heard Pnoy say that he will be allocating 3.7 billion for the housing of our soldiers. Pnoy says, he will do this in 7 months. Sana naman matuloy.

  27. psb,
you may have a point there. i believe no one wakes up one day and says “hmmm, i think i’ll be the most corrupt president today!” I believe people generally are good and approach life with good intentions, somehow along the way, they become victims of circumstance.
My father was a marcos loyalist until he died, I had long discussions with him about this and he never relented, and He was my idol, so there must be something good about Marcos. My mother on the other hand, now she was more of a romantic, she was, and still is, an Eraptian.
We may have conflicting views, but I’m glad we still have the liberty to do so.

  28. Golberg Golberg

Simula 2004, one of the worse or the worst investment destination in Southeast Asia ang Pinas.—Ibig sabihin bago ang 2004 or atleast bago ang 21st century, puntahan ng foreign investors ang Pinas.

  29. One investment source the previous administration has snubbed is Europe. Compared to our neighbors, European FDIs are near nil.
    ————–
True! Look at our trade agreements, zero tariff for Asean, Japan, Korea, and even some China products but full duties from Europe! This is why I don’t understand why we still don’t look at Foreign Affairs as an integral part of economic development as a jump off point for trade?

    ————–

    Sad, but true Goldberg…

  32. Golberg Golberg

You’re right jug. I forgot to type corporate farming as one of the bigger employment generating industries, especially in the rural areas.—Ito ang isang bagay na napansin ko na ayaw nilang mangyari dito sa Pinas TT. Lumiliit yung pwedeng maging sakahan.

  33. parasabayan parasabayan

I would not say that I was a die hard Marcos fan. Not close. In the late 1970s, I travelled to all the barangays in region 2 to do a research. There, I saw all the new roads, electricity in even the remotest area. In each barangay, there was a doctor, nurse and midwife and medicines were provided free. That was when I appreciated what Marcos did to the local folks. Wala ding patayan nuon where I went. Nagka-amebiasis nga lang ako coz there were no decent eateries along the way.

  34. We may be doing something right at the moment, really clean up our act, then, when we’re sure our institutions are reliable, we go for more aggressive projects, infrastructure, efficiency systems, technology, manufacturing, etc, heck I wouldn’t mind if the government has to borrow more money for it as long as the funds are used responsibly.

  36. parasabayan parasabayan

The biggest deterrent to foreign investors are peace and order and the government red tape. Before a project is created, these companies will have to live with the fact that the president of the Philippines has a cut, the governor has a cut and the mayor too. If the business is in a barangay, pati yung barangay captain kailangang may cut. This is the business as usual practice of our government. I hope Pnoy stops this practice. Maybe we can trully move forward.

  37. goldberg,
in business we have to look for our niche, where we’re strong at, and it doesn’t have to be us kowtowing to the multinationals. as a columbian banana expert used to tell me “use the gringos money and technology to our advantage.”

  38. ..like what china did…

  39. Golberg Golberg

Really true Jug. That is how they operate.

  40. parasabayan parasabayan

The OFWs if given the right incentives can really put up small businesses. I hope all OFWs are taught how to invest their money rather than just spending all their hard earned money in consumer goods for their families. We have to start producing if we want to improve our economy. Kaso mo mas mura pa yung imported China products than those we can produce kaya ang tao, bibili na lang ng made in China.

Taiwan, in the late 70s had a way of selling their products efficiently. In every hotel room in town, they had business directories and a brochure of their products. All the produce of their farmers were brought to a central place and sold wholesale with a guaranteed mark up. They took care of their farmers. This is why they just leave the soil and squat in main cities. Becasue they do not have the skills to find a job, they end up as dope pushers and criminals.

  41. parasabayan parasabayan

Let us face it too, no matter how we try hard on anything else, we are still an agricultural country. Thailand was trained in our land to plant their number rice. Tayo, we wasted it! The likes of Joc joc Bolante robbed our farmers.

  42. Golberg Golberg

  44. parasabayan parasabayan

Jug, ang niche natin, OFWs for now. We produce good workers but we are very poor in producing entrepreneurs. Dito tayo mag-concentrate. We can harness the money of the OFWs. A lot of our OFWs would really like to eventually come home kaya lang kung hindi sila nakapagpundar ng kahit na ano, isang kahig isang tuka pa rin ang labas nila.

  45. parasabayan parasabayan

We need to have skills training.

May Green revolution pa.

  47. parasabayan parasabayan

Kaya nga Cocoy dapat ay may population control tayo. But the church does not want any population control. Kahit na sana man lang yung napapagusapan sa eskwela na ang isang tao, babae man o lalake ay dapat magisip isip muna ng pagkakabuhayan bago magka-pamilya. Just this basic thing first.

  48. PSb,

  50. Actually there were so many programs that were worthwhile during Marcos, and I particularly like the Filipino Ideology, if he was successful in persuading the people to accept this ideology that could have been a significant cultural change. The problem was the implementation and the compliance, now why did he have to resort to “forcing” these programs on the people, why there was a need to muzzle the media, taking over businesses, and trampling of human rights? Why was there a need to rule with an iron glove, instilling fear, and why the huge family deposits in foreign banks? Now that boggles the mind…

  52. Isagani Isagani

Jejomar’s EDSA1 reflections are the kind of stuff that one hopes for. It’s the kind of stuff that’s nice to hear. It’s the kind of stuff that is least understood and lifeless because it is not experienced. It is the kind of stuff that one dreams of having, like a big shiney car when all you make is 300 pesos a day. It is the kind of stuff that frustrates. Why? Because, they are just big empty words.

More rhetoric on this Edsa anniversary. More posturing. More promises. More Bull shit!

Treat your fellowmen as you would have them treat you. Follow the golden rule as it was intended. It’s what works. It’s that simple.

Unfortunately, instead of a linear cause and effect, its more like chaos theory on steroids, where one deed starts a complex chain reaction which is more unpredictable as the golden rule. Its a constant power struggle, of multiple agendas pushing for supremacy…we can only hope that the ones with the “good” agendas come to power, otherwise, god help us all…

We should be thankful that we still have our democracy although sometimes, “democrazy” ang labas.

I was in India in December and comparing what we have, malayo na ang narating natin. Ang hirap ng buhay sa India. I was in Morocco a few years ago, ganun din, mahirap ang buhay. But in Asia, we are lagging behind. Economically we were way ahead of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia etc. Ngayon kahit na ang Vietnam which was ravaged by war is even more progressive than us. Let us retrace where we erred and keep working on overhauling our government. Easier said than done. But collectively, we can do it!

Aquino said the government would build some 140,000 housing units for the military and the police until 2016.

Aquino disclosed the initial 20,000 housing units would be completed and turned over in six to eight months.

The President said the beneficiaries would only pay P200 a month for 25 years for a unit amounting P175,000 and which would increase to P844.20 in the 26th to 30th year.

For units with lofts costing P208, 000, the owners will start paying P300 a month for the first 25 years, and P934.20 from the 26th to 30th year.

“At present, our soldiers and police officers were paying anywhere from P2,000 to P5,000 (a month) for rent. Paying P200 and eventually P800 for option one will make them own the lot and the house,” the President said.

The size of the units would range from 21 to 40 square meters. The housing projects are located in Bocaue and San Jose del Monte in Bulacan; Biñan in Laguna; Trece Martirez in Cavite; and Montalban and Barras in Rizal.

The President, speaking in Filipino, said this was how the celebration of the silver anniversary of the bloodless EDSA People Power in 1986 must be done – to give back to the Armed Forces of the Philippines the protection, care and security they provided the Filipino people 25 years ago.

  76. And so we celebrate and exalt democracy to the highest heavens with our version of People Power as our own highest point, but great thinkers like Plato think democracy is a bad form of government

Plato understood that democracy is one of the worst forms of government because nothing guarantees that a ruler elected by people is virtuous enough to know what’s best for the masses. Only a philosopher would be truly compromised with people’s wellness as he would have been educated to know what to prioritize in a hierarchy of values. The uneducated masses are ignorant about the reality of the soul and therefore, they would not be able to make the right political decisions.

    ——————————————
    Plato on Aristocracy

It is very important to point out that, according to Plato’s philosophy, aristocracy is the best form of government as long as the ruler is totally compromised with the harmony of the population. Since the ruler would be truly virtuous, he would not want to rule in order to obtain status, power or accumulate wealth, but because he would know that the people need him to lead them towards growth and prosperity as Plato believed that the role of the philosophers is to serve humanity with their wisdom.

Did you know that Plato as well as Aristotle, defended slavery?

The Failures of EDSA 1 was that those who were expected to account for their misdeeds during the years of the Authoritarian Regime were allowed to get away without nary a scracth and it leavesa legacy to the suceeding Regimes and Political, Business and Public servants and even the members of society that “well, can do something and get away it, then why not”..and obviously the pattern had been set…and being in a Democracy aggravates the stuation…Lawyers have to make some good living too…

Jug, it is about time that we take care of our soldiers. Most of the lower ranks live in slums. I know so coz I saw these with my own two eyes. Nakita ko pa yung bata na months old lang drinking diluted coffee coz the family could not afford to buy milk.

I would also like to see a hi-rise building in metro manila for those serving in Camp Aguinaldo and Fort Bonifacio. Condos were built in Fort Bonifacio pero puro generals lang ang nakabili pati na yung mga families nila. There has to be a land and low cost building dedicated to these men in uniform. This was one of the demands of the Magdalos.

case in point he said :

    •Aristocracy – this is the best form of government, according to Plato, in which the ruler is a philosopher, someone whose soul has been educated through the contemplation of arts and the exercise of the intellect. Having studied philosophy, this ruler would know the true virtues and, therefore, he would be able to lead people towards wellness and prosperity. Since the ruler would be virtuous, he would not want to deceive and abuse the citizens;

    another point :

Did you know that Plato as well as Aristotle, defended slavery? Read Aristotle on Slavery to know why slavery is not wrong from the perspective of classical philosophy

    another point :

Plato believed with the Pythagoreans that the stars, planets, Sun and Moon moved around the Earth attached to the surface of crystalline spheres which slid over one another while circumscribed about the five regular solids. And as they moved past each other they created a sound in the cosmos called the music of the spheres.

I believe those who joined the 2 EDSA’s, at least most of them really wanted real change and were tired of their corrupt leaders. Ang kaso, they did not anticipate the vultures (politicians) lurking around them. Sabi nga nila, “same dog, different collar”. Tignan na lang niniyo ang mga kalaban ni Marcos, those so called “freedom fighters”, ano na at asan na sila ngayon? Ilan ang kanilang mansion? Luxury cars? Ilang beses sila bumiyahe sa US o Europa?

Volkswagen Beetle? P5,000 lang brand new. Lupa sa Pasay, P24/sqm. Napakasimple ng buhay, mura ang lahat.

    Ngayon?

  89. Tongue,

Gosh! You still remember that? Can’t remember that exactly but I remember Manila being clean; not much crime, people had access to health care and according to many people, there was food on the table for the poor and of course, people were a bit more disciplined.

One thing for sure, things were not messy. Of course, the commies had lots of problems but I don’t think that (Commies wanting to topple govt) changed even when Cory Aquino assumed power. Aquino freed lots of communists, eg., Sison, Jalandoni, Agcaoili et al but didn’t stop those guys causing mayhem. On the contrary, under Cory Aquino things got a lot more messy.

  90. And of course, people didn’t like the curfew but heck that didn’t stop us teenagers having a good time although didn’t do it in the streets.

Moreover, they said people weren’t allowed to travel abroad but heck we did.

At the beginning I believe Marcos did a good job — he wanted to dismantle the oligarchy but perhaps things got out of hand. I’ve lost track of the issues after 73-74 and frankly every time I went to visit during those years, Manila was absolutely great — even the countryside was simply fantastic. Today — shit all over the place!

  91. Now, contrast natin yung sinasabi nya na meeting ng LEDAC during Arroyo presidency, what happened with those meetings?

Now, ikaw ano pananaw mo rito. I think this is where they crafted the darn EO where nobody testifies against anybody even when there were whistleblowers na.

I went to Edsa 1. I did not join Edsa 2, but I’m not pro-Erap and not a fan of Arroyo either. I went to Edsa to effect a change because you can feel the sincerity ng mga nagpunta sa Edsa 1. You can feel the bravery of the Filipino then. You have a cause.

In Edsa 2, they have propaganda. If you were reading the Inquirer then, you will know what I’m talking about. They were talking of critical mass, of it not having enough to oust Erap, but time is of the essence so they took a gamble and ousted Erap because of Angie’s defection. Pure propaganda machine, I tell you. They tried to replicate the spirit of Edsa but you can feel no sincerity there. That’s what I feel then.

I still long for Edsa 1 where people were really one in heart, spirit, and presence with one cause, to free from bondage or yoke of the dictatorship.

  92. My ex-boss used to tell me a story — (ok, will sum it up) the company wanted to sell an executive aircraft to Marcos. The sales director was having a difficult time until one day he was brought to the golf course where Marcos played. There he met the president. He was introduced — he told him about his business. Marcos haggled like crazy and in the end said, that he didn’t like it because he found it much too expensive. And that was it. I met the said sales director 15 years ago who confirmed the story. He said that he was really impressed by the man.

(OK, that’s one story, many here probably have bad memories and stories of Martial Law under Marcos. Suffice to say that I didn’t. I had one hell of a good time!)

  93. Question today is: Is the Philippines better off today, decades adter the fall of Marcos?

  94. And my question, of course, includes not only today’s admin but also the ones before the current leadership.

  95. vonjovi2 vonjovi2

The sale of that goddamn military base was earmarked for the modernisation of the AFP.

What happened? They bloody sold the whole thing to admin cronies, the Army lost its base and the AFP is not yet modernised. That’s a lot of shit going about.

  98. parasabayan parasabayan

Anna, the sale of a portion of Fort Bonifacio while tabako was in office, now called the Global City was the one earmarked for modernization. The proceeds were probably used for the modernization of the mansions of a few including some generals, yet again. The condos supposedly built for the soldiers, the one I am referring to , I believe, is still a part of the camp. About 10 yrs or so ago, these were for sale for a million to 2 million. They were only about 24 sq m or so. For a couple, a unit was ok but for a family of 4 or more, they have to buy two adjacent units. And who could afford those prices? Only the generals and maybe some colonels.

  99. parasabayan parasabayan

  100. parasabayan parasabayan

Exactly Anna, the old Marcos was a good man. But the wife, forget it! I personally think she was the liability during the Marcos regime to gether with the vulture generals like Angie, Garcia and Ligot and her family whom she wanted to please so much “to belong”.

  101. Agree PSB! They say that behind every successful man is a woman but the reverse is true too: behind a failed man is a woman.

  102. Imelda was typical of a very ambitious woman from a poor and illegitimate background wanting to hit it big time in high society. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, except when greed and lust for “things that shine” got in the way, recipe for disaster.

I read Pedrosa’s book (still have my copy somewhere) The Untold Story of Imelda. She was both admirable in her determination as she was pathetic in her resoluteness to show that she was someone, as if money could buy genuine love and respect. What I don’t understand is why Marcos allowed things to get out of hand. He was a natural leader with immense intelligence; he should have known where and when to stop or at least to tell his wife to slow down. Didn’t he see that an unreasonable conjugal dictatorship was frowned upon and that it was not gonna go down well? History could have told him that.

Oh well… now all water under the bridge.

  103. But it’s also true that horrific abuses were committed by the military — members of the military revealed that to me a few years ago. Wonder if Marcos knew that first hand… He must have known, no way a man of sufficient intelligence could not have known that if you gave the military power over life and death, there was bound to be abuse.

  104. My thoughts after Edsa? Occured to me that our military high-ups are just as bad as the Burmese military!

  105. rose rose

In 1969 ang Fort Bonifacio ay isang military fort…ang mga bahay ay simple lang..ang mga offices ay “barracks” style ..Thirty years after ang Fort Bonifacio ay iba na..wala na ang mga barracks at high-rise na…noong 1969 ang mga nakatira sa Fort Bonfacio ay army families ngayon mga mayayaman na ang nakatira (well come to think of it..may mga military generals got rich)..progress? aywan ko…sino nga ba ang nagbenta ng Fort Bonifacio? at sino ba ang developer ng The Fort? The Ayalas? Ibang iba na talaga! What money can buy and change people indeed.

  106. Marcos was kicked out because he played the game too well.

Yes, there were cronies and there was Imelda. But there was a well defined Industrialization Roadmap, too, the implementation of which should have culminated by the switching on of the New Bataan Nuclear Power Plant in 1986 or thereabout.

A cheaper source of energy should have put us at par with Japan today, but we gave in to the whims of the Banksters who prefer that we continue to consume oil for their profits, in collusion with the Holy Church who have amassed our precious metals beforehand.

We continue to suffer because we refuse to accept the fact that the ROOT CAUSE of all that is Evil is the Church itself. Anybody who will stand up against this Evil will be dealt with swiftly like it did to JFK.

  107. If you think that since you can fill a ballot with your favorite celebrity, you are already empowered and living in a democratic society, you are dead wrong.

Democracy can only happen if each vote is of equal weight and value.

Would you agree that your Intelligent Vote be counted as one vote like the rest of the Idiot’s or the Misinformed Vote? How can we have a well rounded leader if that’s the case?

The system in place is designed to fail.

Anna, the first few years of martial law was good in general. People are more disciplined. They follow even the simplest laws like crossing on pedestrian lanes. Taxi driver’s are more courteous, and so were policemen. Yes there are some who are really corrupt, but not as rampant and as “garapal” as we have now.

It was only the last few years of Marcos in power that things started to go haywire. They say he wasn’t in control anymore during that time since he’s alleged to be sick and undergoing dialysis. It was his cabinet minister and Imelda who’s calling the shots.

Democracy was never restored with the ouster of Marcos, what Cory did was to install Yellowcracy.

  113. xman xman

The US Founding Fathers never created or subscribed to Democracy, in fact, they hated it so much. Why? In a Democracy, the majority vote rules even though that rules trample upon the rights of the minority. Democracy can be easily manipulated by people with money and power. The people can be slaughtered easily like a sheep.

The first charter of US created by their Founding Fathers never mentioned Democracy. The government that they created was not a democratic or democracy government but a REPUBLIC government as stated by Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founders.

So, what is a difference between a Democracy and a Republic government? I think I already explained the Democracy part above. The Republic government guarantees the right of the minority. The minority don’t need to follow what the majority wants, their rights are protected.

The US Founding Fathers used to joke about this Republic government that they created. They said that the sheep, the people, can be easily be slaughtered in a Democracy type of government but with a Republic government the sheep has a gun, to protect itself. It will not go down without a fight.

  115. at gusto nyong bumalik kay marcos?

    Toting,

I think you are misinterpreting nostalgia here: President Marcos is dead, very dead, more than dead, completely dead, absolutely terrifyingly dead as dead duck … no way you can go back to that era unless you believe his ghost is back and has decided to impose Martial Law again. 😉

  116. Hi Mike! Heard that too. But does anybody know when he began to be ill?

  117. Pinoys seem to be able to live and function well and become more or less disciplined when abroad. Perhaps, Pinoys, and Pinas, by extension, need a benevolent dictator like Lee Kuan Yew? Sad thing is that it’s terribly difficult to find that benevolent banana 🙁

  118. Or perhaps even the likes of Mahathir, the father of Modern Malaysia. He knew when to step down. PM Najib’s wife is much like Imelda. Her love for money, things that shine, abuse of power is phenomenal.

I remembered watching a tv show about Pinoy’s abroad. And in one segment, they were interviewing the owner of Goldilocks in LA. We know how Americans (including Fil-Ams) would clean up their table after eating in a fast food restaurant. But for unknown reasons, Pinoys after eating at Goldilocks in LA would just leave their tables without putting away their trash. Maybe they were thinking that “Pinoy naman ang may ari so ok lang”.

  124. Mike Mike

Someone ones told me that unlike Westerners, Asians in general are undiciplined and quite stubborn when it comes to following and obeying laws, that is why we need a “dictator” to rule on us.

  125. “Pinoy naman ang may ari so ok lang”.

    😀 😀 😀

    Mike,

Incidentally, a couple of days ago, I saw a group of women whom I recognised were Pinays because one of them said to another rather loudly while laughing, “Sira ulo!” to one in the group; they were walking leisurely downtown. Suddenly, one of them just threw a small bag of rubbish on the sidewalk. I ran up to her and told her in Tagalog that she dropped something. She exclaimed, “Ay Pilipina ka?” (I was tempted to say, no, “I’m Swedish!!! Can’t you see I’m blood, blue eyed and can speak Tagalog?” 🙂 🙂 🙂 but didn’t); she then said that it was rubbish (“basura lang”).

I told her what she had done was illegal and she should pick it up and throw it in a bin. “Ah ganun ba?” she said most innocently; one of the younger women in the group immediately picked it up (am sure they threw it somewhere on the sidewalk once beyond my view… hahahaha!)

    Ayayayayay!

  126. re #98/#99 Anna, psb, There is this line from your most recent “hero”, Angie Reyes, during a senate investigation on the AFP modernization fund during Gloria’s time. He was asked, “What happened to the proceeds of the sale of Fort Bonifacio which was supposed to fund the AFP’s modernization?”

Without hesitation, his reply was, “You may not see it but it’s there”. David Copperfield or David Blaine could learn a lesson or two from him in making 4 Billion Pesos invisible had he not committed suicide.

These figures are kept fresh in memory because this topic keeps popping up in family gatherings. We remind each other how we, a modest lower middle class family, endured sending children to exclusive schools, sans all the comforts of a well-furnished rented dwelling, but still afforded regular weekend strolls and shopping despite my dad’s meager salary which is barely above minimum. It all boils down to prices.

At today’s standards, we would by now be wallowing in poverty given the same income level.

  129. People during those decades (60s-70s) then wore tailored clothes, RTW was Eloy’s (2nd hand) stuff. Modistas and Sastres made good money working in their home-based “Tailoring and Haberdashery”. People in the commercial districts of Cubao, Carriedo, Baclaran, and Escolta wear their Sunday best and the streets were absolutely litter-free. My first-ever RTW was a Levi’s denim pants and jackets bought for P70 each at Cubao when I was in Grade 6. The jacket was too big (US Small) for me I wore it even through college, haha. Do you F’in believe the price? A similar set of China-made but sold in the US these days would fetch around P5,000.

  130. My mother is pretty nostalgic too of the early martial law years — she likes to say that her house didn’t get burgled and that drivers were less unruly, didn’t unnecessarily go honk honk with their cars… 😀 😀 😀

  135. Bongbong must be smoking something of the cannabis variety or out of his mind like his mother. He should first look at history before mouthing anything so stupid! Marcos actually drove the country to the ground and during the pre Marcos era we were ahead of Singapore! Marcos type distatorship/cronyism and supposed massive infrastructure build up was just a window dressing and a means of looting the government legally an so many people were hoodwinked.

    ———————–
FACT: THE year Ferdinand Marcos was elected president of the Philippines was also the year neighboring country Singapore became an independent country. This was 1965.

When Marcos took over Malacañang, the exchange rate was P2 for one US dollar. The Philippines in the 1960s, it has often been said, was next only to Japan as the most progressive country in Asia.

That was the time when the Korean peninsula lay in ruins after a devastating civil war. Malaysia and Indonesia were infant nations only then emerging from European colonial rule. And Singapore, as its eventual leader Lee Kwan Yew likes to point out, was a tiny, backwater fishing village with no natural resources, barely functioning social institutions and a volatile ethnic mix.

Marcos’ son and namesake, Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., let loose with the observation that had his father not been driven out of power and his plans for the country thus scuttled, the Philippines would have become “another Singapore” by now. The senator uttered the statement with a straight face, so we can presume that he was serious.

The statement can be interpreted in two ways: One, Marcos Jr. has no idea that before his father ran the country to the ground, the Philippines was, in fact, ahead of Singapore. Two, he meant exactly what he said: Marcos did have plans to turn the country into “another Singapore”—the tiny, backwater fishing village of long ago—hence the Philippines’ tailspin from Asian powerhouse to Asian basket case in two decades of Marcos-style “benevolent dictatorship.”

  136. Lets read what Lee Kuan Yew had to say about Marcos Sr!

    ——————————
In his memoir published in 2000, Lee recalled how he once told former US Vice President Walter Mondale that Marcos “might have started off as a hero but ended up a crook.” Lee also dismissed Marcos as a “self-indulgent ageing ruler who allowed his wife and cronies to clean out the country through ingenious monopolies and put the government heavily in debt.”

  137. The leader of the Asian powerhouse had something to say about the EDSA 2 also…

Singapore’s Lee: Philippine Change No Boost For Democracy

SINGAPORE (AP)–The change of power in the Philippines was no boost for democracy because it was done outside the constitution, but the Southeast Asian country can expect investment to flow back in, Singapore elder statesman Lee Kuan Yew said Monday.

“I think there’s an immediate sense of relief, so capital will flow back, but cautiously, because the problems are not over,” Lee said in an interview.

Philippine President Joseph Estrada was forced from office on Saturday, days after his impeachment trial collapsed. The Supreme Court named Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo -who had been vice president – as president after the army withdrew support for Estrada.

“I would have preferred that Estrada could be removed in a constitutional way in the Senate,” said Lee, the 77-year-old founder of the modern city-state of Singapore, whose views are often sought by world leaders.

“That’s an assumption of power here which isn’t in the constitution. So I don’t think it was a plus for the democratic system,” he added.

    http://getrealphilippines.com/legacy/agr-disagr/12-2-lky.html

So the hero Angelo Reyes had cause for regrets? with all his credentials attesting to his brilliance, sound judgment, and patriotism – he was a dismal failure in the fight for democracy.

  138. “I would have preferred that Estrada could be removed in a constitutional way in the Senate,” said Lee, the 77-year-old founder of the modern city-state of Singapore, whose views are often sought by world leaders.

Exactly! That’s wisdom! You cannot tamper with the Constitution and believe that the foundations of the Republic will survive that kind of beating. There’s one hell of a lot to pay when so-called do-gooders in the so-called evil society whose hatred for Estrada supplanted their brains so badly that they created a monster!

You cannot right a wrong by doing another wrong!

  139. Golberg Golberg

  140. “That’s an assumption of power here which isn’t in the constitution. So I don’t think it was a plus for the democratic system,” he added.

And those who were peeing in their pants in glee over the toppling of Estrada in the so-called Edsa 2 through extra-constitutional means must bow their heads in shame (and I mean that for all who are dead and alive!)

The first one who must burn in hell for playing the evil prince of the Church is Cardinal Sin! Second one, ex-President Cory Aquino, next, Chief Injustice Davide, and of course, Arroyo and her band of military bandits including opinion writers in various newspapers who were all complicit in righting a wrong by doing a major wrong!

  143. Gloria’s reign didn’t exactly drive the country to the ground. We made some considerable gains, and we can’t overlook how her leadership steered the country through the financial crises. Gloria had her strengths and her weaknesses, unfortunately she crossed the line too many times and believed by buying protection, she can get away with it. She said “sorry” but did not step down, which was frustrating, because normally if you are a leader and you betrayed the trust of your people, you have to consider yourself unfit to lead and abdicate your position to allow the organization to choose a better leader.
I believe all our leaders contributed to the good of the whole in some way or another but unfortunately there seems to be no continuity from one administration to the next. Its like every president wants to start something new every six years, and every president is solving the problems left behind by the previous one. Could it have been possible to determine which programs/systems/projects were worth maintaining or continuing and which were worth stopping?

  144. Says Jug:

Bongbong…should first look at history before mouthing anything so stupid! Marcos actually drove the country to the ground and during the pre Marcos era we were ahead of Singapore! I would have appreciated you and Monsod explaining what went wrong. Marcos’ economic blueprint seems to me sound. He was building schools, dams, expressways, bridges, hospitals, centers for culture and the arts, power plants, telecommunications etc. on a scale unmatched before and after his administration. He was setting up his ambitious 11(?) major industrial projects to industrialize the nation. Also, there was his programs for food self-sufficiency. I have yet to hear someone say kalokohan lang mga iyan. You say this was a means to cover up the massive looting but his budget for all of 21 years was comparably tight. (Do you know how much was Cory’s budget for all her six years compared to his?!) I mean, its almost like magic ala David Copperfield . You are building Pantabangan Dam, San Juanico Bridge, BNPP, LRT and many more, aside from paying the salaries of a huge bureaucracy and he is plundering in the billions of dollars all at the same time!! His plunder was at first estimated at 30B dollars, has since been scaled down to 10B dollars, but do you understand how huge that amount is?! It is equivalent to FIVE Bataan Nuclear Power Plants. Now, I challenge anyone who knows government budgeting and finance how the hell anyone could do that without leaving a trail at all on financial documents. No, you leave not a trail, but a highway, a ten-lane highway… There would be a mountain of documents left to hang to teach the Garcias and the Arroyos how not to get caught.

    But yes, something went wrong…

Wow. I love Maria Reesa’s thoughts on EDSA 1. To quote the juicy bit:

People power in the Philippines became a political tool, brandished by its people and its symbol, Corazon Aquino. She led mass protests against her three successors: fighting charter change under President Fidel Ramos; successfully deposing President Joseph Estrada in a second people power uprising which bastardized its meaning because he was a democratically elected leader; helping install President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, then later calling for protests against her.

  148. parasabayan parasabayan

Jug, so now, confirmed pa ng ibang leader na si Imeldific was one of the big reasons of the old Marcoses’ downfall.

I was watching the EDSA 1 story on TV and they showed the room where it looked like a hospital room. This was the room where the Apo had to be treated. If you can recall ( I do not know how old you were then) everytime a tv update was flashed, only a still photo of Marcos was shown and just his voice but the voice was that of a very sick man.

The greatest fault of Marcos was, he should have stepped down when he felt that he was already too ill to manange the country. It would have prevented Imelda, the generals and their cronies to destroy all the early accomplishements of Marcos then. Marcos could have just allowed real elections to take place and let the people decide whom they wanted to lead them.

  149. parasabayan parasabayan

I heard that the “blueprints” of the road to self reliance authored by Marcos is still being followed (although silently) by the succeeding leaders.

  150. PSB,

Certainly began during the time of FVR and of course, during the time of putot (don’t know how much she pocketed everytime she read the ‘blueprint’ though). I don’t know if the current dispensation will follow the Marcos self-reliance blueprint.

  151. PSB,

We know how his mother hated Marcos. She went on a vindictive spree, I hope the son is not going to be like that.

  152. parasabayan parasabayan

Anna, we never know if Bongbong will be like his father. He had his share of mischiefs when he was young. I do not think he is as brilliant as his dad though. The Apo was, I thought, the best we ever had until his regime was mismanaged in the end. For the young ones who just now rely on the whitewashed stories about the Marcos regime, they will never know the truth about Marcos. I knew what he did and I know what destroyed him, first hand and not from what I just read. I was old enough then to discern what was going on.

  153. parasabayan parasabayan

Yes Anna, I heard that too, about the unwelcomed Imelda. But Ferdie was so in love with her, I guess. Part of it was probably the compassion for what she had to go through from birth that Ferdie had to fill in the void. Well, this compassion became the nail that sealed his coffin, both from public service and maybe in his real life. SAyang talaga si Marcos.

  154. But Ferdie was so in love with her, I guess.

    Hahahahah! Can bet he was.

But know what, PSB, I bet Bongbong Marcos, despite his mischiefs (agree with you, he did and sometimes better to do them while young than the other way around), had got a higher IQ than our dearly beloved annointed saviour, Saint Benigno Aquino Jr (can’t ever remember if he’s junior.)

  155. NFA,

Must say, am not a fan of Ressa but that article was excellent.

What she says here is absolutely dead on!

Mrs Aquino’s attempts to rekindle people power and repeat her extra-constitutional triumph challenged her primary legacy — democracy — and further weakened the fledgling institutions she left behind.

  156. and further weakened the fledgling institutions she left behind.

And that is one of Edsa 1’s “triumphs”.

  157. The greatest fault of Marcos was, he should have stepped down when he felt that he was already too ill to manange the country. It would have prevented Imelda, the generals and their cronies to destroy all the early accomplishements of Marcos then.

…about Over population, Family planning, and the church…

    – “As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”

Dapat maging FRUITFUL o maging mabunga muna…then tsaka yung multiply. Hindi yan naiintindihan ng mga kaparian!

Marcos is the ONLY president that has a VISION for the future of the Philippines, so far. During his time, he has already projects that will benefit the Filipino people. Yes umutang nga siya but we saw kung saan-saang projects and infrastructures yun napunta, not to mention modern specialized hospitals na pinakikinabangan natin. After almost THIRTY (30) YEARS, ano-ano na ba ang nadagdag?

(Deceased uncle was one of the journalists covering the Apo then, and the one who translated into Pilipino the ex prez’ two books on (hala di ko ma-recall, yun makapal na may rebolusyon sa title yata).

I am in Grade 6 nang i-declare ang Martial Law. And I have NO PROBLEM whatsoever siguro dahil hindi naman ako aktibista at abiding citizen naman. In fact mas gusto ko pa nga dahil tahimik, malinis at maayos. At least mas safe pa.

  167. parasabayan parasabayan

For those of us who had witnessed what really went on then during the Marcos era somehow appreciated the things Marcos did. Yung mga kabataan lang noon na musmos pa at walang malay are the ones now condemning the Marcos era. Yun lang kasi ang nababasa nila at napagkukuwentuhan over the years.

If you can remember, we had the finest Folk Arts theater in Southeast Asia then, the Heart Center, Kidney Center etc. These roads are still being used now. But in some localities, they took out these roads and replaced them with the cheap masonry so every year these roads need to be replaced. These road projects become the biggest source of corruption in local politics. These are part of the local budgets.

Also, I knew that the people he hunted down were the suspected criminals, activists etc. He actually cleaned the streets then. So the 70,000 or so who disappeared then could have been with the left or were connected to street gangs. But I heard that when he was no longer in control, this was no longer the case. Even innocent people were arrested.

  168. rose rose

Ang sabi ng nakakatanda sa akin…na Marcos was sp smitten sa ganda ni Imelda in one week time they got married..at that time Imelda just won the Miss Manila Beauty Contest…some say political strategy rin kasi si Marcos who aimed for the presidency need support from the Visayas..and Imelda was the niece of the then Speaker Daniel Romualdez..thus the history of their love story..ang tadhana nga naman.. si Imelda naman daw ay promdi..at ang nanay daw niya ay isang katulong (labandera?) lamang..thus the from rags to riches…I don’t know if this is true but that seems to be the kutso-kutso (tsismis)..kung baga para na rin siyang nanalo sa lotto (sweepsakes)

  169. luzviminda luzviminda

    Chi, Anna,

  170. luzviminda luzviminda

Also, I knew that the people he hunted down were the suspected criminals, activists etc….

    PSB,

The threat of Communism is REAL at that time. During my college days at Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, nagkaka-abutan secretly ng mga slips of paper inviting students to attend a ‘seminar’, at a place ‘near’ Manila Cathedral. (That is why I also believed Cardinal Sin coddled those commies). Ilang beses akong naabutan ng papel. But I always ignored the invitations dahil concentrated ako na makatapos ng pag-aaral.

  171. PSB,

“Yung mga kabataan lang noon na musmos pa at walang malay are the ones now condemning the Marcos era. Yun lang kasi ang nababasa nila at napagkukuwentuhan over the years.”

Funny you say that because the daughter (of a very good journalist friend of mine who was jailed by Marcos for 3 months on the day martial law was declared) who was born after Martial Law was declared, is a staunch critic of Marcos to this day often repeating what her father had said: “Marcos was a blood-thirsty criminal.” When I asked her what made her think so, she pointed to her Dad’s incarceration.

I had to explain to her that considering that her Dad was one of the most horrendous no-holds-barred Marcos and Imelda critic before martial law, his being jailed for 3 months was lenient compared to what he could have experienced under Mao or under some totalitarian regime elsewhere and I cited Chile, Cuba, Russia, etc.

In fact her father was allowed to write after his incarceration and to set up another publication during martial law. He became an important person in the journalism world which he enjoyed even after Marcos was deposed. So, based on that lenient 3-month incarceration, I reminded her that calling Marcos a blood-thirsty criminal was hardly justified.

  172. “The threat of Communism is REAL at that time.”

    That’s very true, Luz.

Joma himself admitted as much. They were getting hordes of help in cash and in kind from Mao Tse Tung (Joma revealed this in a comprehensive interview). In fact, Joma had to send his children to mainland China (where they eventually grew up) so he could spread terror across the country without worrying about his family. And, remember, the NPA tactical commander was a former PMAer, Lt Victor Corpuz.

  173. Luz,

“Dahil ba alam na nila na hindi si Macoy at kung sino ang tunay na master-mind?”

Oo nga ano… I’m sure Ferdinand E Marcos didn’t order the killing of Aquino. The man was far too brilliant a tactician to have his main opponent killed — he knew that would make him a martyr.

  174. “By the way, ang alam ko ay inimbitahan ni Macoy si NInoy na makipagtulungan sa kanyang gobyerno na tinanggihan naman ni NIyoy.”

I heard that too… they even had a chat in the palace about it but of course, Aquino knew that if he did, he would lose out because he had presidential ambitions.

Saw a video of Kris Aquino and Bongbong Marcos talking about it.

  175. luzviminda luzviminda

    Anna,

Marcos and Ninoy are Fraternity brothers. Di niya kayang ipapatay siya. Kaya nga pinag-abroad na lang niya si Ninoy sa America eh even though the court convicted Ninoy guilty of the cases charged against him.

  176. luzviminda luzviminda

Ninoy was suspected of having associations with Communists. One reason maybe bacause Bernabe Buscayno aka Kumander Dante is a worker at Hacienda Luisita.

  177. Luz,

In fact, it’s been said that he was tipped by members of the CPP about the bomb that was going to blow off in Plaza Miranda and that’s why he wasn’t there. Of course, this is rumour. Only Joma Sison can confirm that.

For years and years and years, everyone and anyone accused Marcos of having done it. Only to discover that it was the Communist Party of the Philippines that actually committed that horrible crime.

  178. parasabayan parasabayan

Luz, I heard that too that Ninoy was one of the com-leaders and that he too was really terminally ill when he came back to PI. Only God knows who the real killers are. For all we know they still wield power one way or the other.

  179. luzviminda luzviminda

    Anna,

They made people believed that lie, so people would blame Marcos. The old Salonga knew the truth that it was the CPP who did it. I saw him said that in a TV interview.

    PSB,

There is a rumor that Ninoy has cancer and was given only so much time to live. (Maybe someone should get his last medical records to confirm). Kaya there is this story about the CIA conspiracy. Dahil Marcos and the US govt had a falling-out and US is not getting what they wanted, and McCoy is getting friendly with Russia. US wants to drop Marcos. Maybe Ninoy knew the ‘planned scenario’ at the Tarmac. Ninoy is hero, Marcos to is to blame. Then People Power. I don’t know how true this is. The family of Gen. Ver said that Ver has documents to show. The Vers are one of the people who wants to reopen the case of Ninoy-Galman to clear their name, and to get to know the truth.

  181. Wow! That’s some food for thought you’ve got there girls!

  182. luzviminda luzviminda

“Luz, I heard that too that Ninoy was one of the com-leaders”

    PSB,

  183. luzviminda luzviminda

    Anna,

Maybe Marcos knew that there is really ‘threat’ on Ninoy’s life from some quarters kaya ayaw niyang bumalik ito sa Pinas. Well, if true the question is sino-sino pang Pinoy ang kasama sa mga planners and players?

  184. Btw, girls, I was just reading The Daily Tribune edito and couldn’t help but roar in laughter…

The peace dove going straight for Noynoy’s head at the Edsa I event could be a divine message with the dove representing God’s hand movement.

It may have been God’s way of saying, “cut the crap Noynoy.”

    Hahahahaha!

Is it true that a dove landed on his head? By accident or design as in they put some bird feed on his head to attract the pigeon?

  185. luzviminda luzviminda

Baka akala eh bird’s nest yung bumbunana ni PNoy. Hahaha!

  186. chi chi

  187. chi chi

#174 Anna. Asus, ganun pala ang ginawa ni Joma!

  188. rose rose

akala ng calapati landing field..Noynoy Aquino Airport…

  189. parasabayan parasabayan

Akala ko si putot lang ang annointed to be a leader kuno pati rin pala itong si Pnoy.

I laughed when I read the last part Anna!

  190. parasabayan parasabayan

Whoever killed Ninoy was the one who got the most benefit from the presidency of Cory. Whoever he or she is, makakarma din siya.

  191. chi chi

psb, kung ganyan maituturo ko na! 🙂

  192. Make no mistake, Marcos belonged to the sames ranks as Mubarak, Khadafi, Idi Amin, and countless others. He was even judged by other leaders ie LKY as a crook. He started the business of jailing students, media, opposition, even the “bartilina” treatment of his so called enemies of the state. He labeled those who opposed him as “communists” and unfortunately some people here believed him.

All these EDSA bashing reminds me of the greated EDSA basher of them all – Gloria Arroyo, when she proclaimed that “the world will not tolerate another EDSA!” so be careful less you be lulled into this line of thinking…that the efforts of EDSA was for nought and the Filipino people are incapable of doing anything right, that we cannot change, that things are worst now and will even get even worst. This is a dangerous but effective ploy, to lull the people into apathy…lets allow ourselves to be grateful of the blessings we are having right now, lets just give a simple “thank you” to the people who made sacrifices so we can enjoy our freedom today no matter how insignificant some of you may see it. Allow us to celebrate our victories, because contrary to so many nay sayers here that believe Filipinos are a bunch of losers who will always never amount to much, and deserve to wallow in defeat and self pity – we say no, we were born to succeed, to toast victories! If we have to spend our whole lives proving to you and the whole world that you are wrong, we will…so we take your criticisms with a grain of salt and start to roll up our sleeves and get down to work…

  193. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

Wouldn’t it be the height of irony if the Arab people who are now staging their own people power revolutions and shifts from autocracy to democracy are able to make their democracy work much better and do it much faster than us?

  194. Phil Cruz Phil Cruz

The Middle East events are another milestone against which the Philippines can measure itself against. It is my prayer and hope that we do not get left behind again by this Arabic region just as we have been left behind by our neighbors in ASEAN.

This is not just an urgent challenge to Noynoy but to us all who are just as responsible as he is in making our democratic institutions work..and making those institutions pull us out of the mire of poverty.

  195. My thoughts exactly, Phil.

We have always been blessed with so several opportunities and even inherent resources, we must not squander them…

  196. luzviminda luzviminda

    “…we must not squander them”

    Jug,

Yan nga ang problema sa Pinas eh, we, especially our leaders squander them… They do not really care about the plight of the Filipinos.

  197. luzviminda luzviminda

In these times of uncertainties and trouble around the world, eh dapat na pagtuunan natin ang SELF-SUFFICIENCY ng bansa, lalo na sa Agrikultura at Industriyalismo. Hindi tayo pwede umasa sa ibang bansa. Pag may event na hindi na tayo makapa-import ng bigas, langis, asukal, at iba pa na ini-aasa natin sa ibang bansa eh pihadong lugmok, lupaypay, o kaya eh tepok na tayo nyan.

  198. Yan nga ang problema sa Pinas eh, we, especially our leaders squander them… They do not really care about the plight of the Filipinos.
    —————————

Luz, if you ask me, this is our main problem, the root cause of all the root causes. When they say that success is the result when opportunity meets preparedness – we fumble every time…

  199. For the all the EDSA bashers out there, here’s something from the greatest basher of them all, unfortunately so many people agree with her lately…she was right, put her back in power! 🙂

    ————————
    President insists: World will not
forgive PINOYS for people power 3

President Gloria Arroyo on Monday repeated her warning on mounting another people power – that the world will not forgive it.

Her statement, similar to what she said Sunday, came on the 22nd anniversary of the first people power.

“The world has permitted the EDSA People Power 2, but the world will not forgive Filipinos for having EDSA People Power 3,” President Arroyo said at an activity in Cavite.

Shut up midget! If there is anyone else who may be thinking about another EDSA, ikaw lang yun coz you are the only ambitios one to topple Pnoy. You are the only wicked one. My take is, once the Malditas is taken out from the Ombudsman and cases may be filed against her, her fatso hubby and horsie kids, she will start de-stabilization of Pnoy’s government. We all know now that all these staged crimes are just to get more grant money from the US, EU, Australia and other first world countries. The putot has all the capability to de-stabilize Pnoy. She knows how to bribe people (AFP, the tongressmen, the senatongs-bato bato sa langit ang matamaan huwag magagalit). With all the stolen money she hid in offshore banks, she can very well do another de-stabilization. Tahimik lang siya ngayon coz all the connections leading to her opt to keep quiet and those who can no longer hold off on divulging the truth just kill themselves. Maswerte pa rin si putot. Not for long putot!

  202. Shut up midget!

In unison with you there, PSB!!!
