Aquino criticized for buying luxury sportscar

From ABS-CBN, Agence France-Presse:

Aquino's P4.5 M source of joy
President Benigno Aquino III said Thursday he had splashed out on a luxury Porsche sportscar, sparking criticism in a country where a third of the population live on less than a dollar a day.

“It appeared to be out of character. He had campaigned against luxury cars and here he is buying a Porsche,” Milo Tanchuling, secretary general of the activist group Freedom from Debt Coalition, told AFP.

President Aquino yesterday said there is nothing wrong if he bought a 2007 model white Porsche at a cost of P4.5 million late last year which he said was his own money.

Aquino, in a chance interview after the oath-taking ceremony of the Liga ng mga Barangay members at the SMX Convention Center, said he is only enjoying and spending his money the way he wants it.

“There is a danger that it will be viewed by many as a sign of extravagance and an unnecessary flaunting of wealth amid massive poverty.”

Local press cited a recent Aquino order banning government units from buying luxury cars as service vehicles.

The 50-year-old bachelor said he sold his old BMW and took out a personal loan to buy the Porsche, which he said allowed him a relaxing drive amid his gargantuan responsibilities.

“I was happy with the deal because its mileage was less than 10,000 kilometers,” Aquino said of the pre-owned vehicle, which local news reports said was a white entry-level model worth P4.5 million ($102,000).

Good car, bad taste?
Aquino’s spokesman, Edwin Lacierda, defended his boss, saying the car’s value had depreciated substantially compared with a brand-new Porsche.

“If it was not depreciated, the president wouldn’t even buy it, wouldn’t even consider it,” Lacierda said.

Aquino won a landslide victory in the May election last year on an anti-corruption pledge of clean government and an end to wasteful spending that he said was the cause of widespread poverty.

Aquino has been known to take the wheel from his personal driver in the past during provincial trips, and once said he considered long drives on smooth highways as among the small luxuries he enjoys.

Lead by example

For his part, Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares, reminded Aquino that he should view himself as a model for other public officials.

“As the president, calling for austerity and asking people to tighten their belts, cutting the budget on various expenses, he should lead by example by not buying a luxury car which many couldn’t even pronounce correctly,” he said in a statement.

Colmenares is the 9th poorest member in the previous House of Representatives with a P1.1 million net worth as reported last June 2010.

“Para sa isang katulad ko na nakatira sa isang maliit na one-bedroom apartment na katulad nito, nakakalula ang Porsche,” he said.

Aquino, last December 2010, issued Memorandum Circular No. 9 prohibiting any government agency from purchasing luxury vehicles.

Colmenares, however, admitted that Aquino, as an individual, can buy whatever he wants as long as he is not using public funds.

“It’s his money, it’s his right. Wala akong karapatang sabihin sa kanya kung anong bibilhin niya, kung anong hindi niya bibilhin as long as it’s not public fund’s, it’s his money, it’s his right. So I guess he can decide kung saan niya gagastusin ang kaniyang pera,” said Colmenares.

‘Of bad taste’

The president also received negative comments from the public. Some of them voiced their criticism through radio and social media.

“Siyempre sa gitna ng kahirapan, kalamidad at milyon-milyon na ang nagugutom, hindi katalinuhan ang bumili ng ganito. Presidente pa naman siya,” Bernard of Mandaluyong texted to dzMM’s SRO radio show.

“Did it ever occur that spending on a Porsche, even if it’s from his own fund at a time of calamity and spiraling prices, his decision is bad taste?” an unnamed texter said.

“Ang dami na ngang naghihirap afford pa nyang bumili ng luxury car. Parang awa naman sa mga naglulok sa kanya sa puwesto,” texted Enrique of San Fernando, Pampanga.

“’Yan pla wLang pera.. yan pala ung walang pangkampanya.. hahaha pakitang tao lng pla toh e.. banat ng banat kay gma xa dn pla..^_^,” posted James Santiago on Facebook.

But there are others who defended Aquino.

“The public should give the president a break for owning his Porsche, he bought it with his own money, unlike the others. Who they are?” texted Gerald of Makati.

“Puwede ba. Pagbigyan ang matandang binata. Di naman nangutang. Kanyang pera naman. Saan ang problema?” posted Delia Respicio Hernandez on Facebook.

“Ano naman masama kung bumili sya? unang una kaya naman niya bumili ng 3rd hand na sasakyan… hindi naman cguro tama na porke pangulo na natin siya wala na syang karapatan bumili ng gusto niya. Bumili sya ng gusto niya as long as sariling pera niya un gamit niya walang problema yan…” posted Richard Trasmonte.

He added that his decision should not affect his administration’s austerity campaign.

“Unang-una…third hand iyan. Pangalawa, hindi gobyerno ang nagbayad diyan. Ibinenta ko iyung isang sasakyan ko at nagkataon ho meron namang buyer at iyun ang ginagamit ko dito sa sasakyang ito,” he said referring to the BMW which he bought through a car loan while he was still a senator. He completed his loan payments last year.

The President admitted he probably would have less time to drive the Porsche citing that it probably would run less than the 10,000 mileage that it has already run under its previous owner.

“Wala namang nag-object ng nag-bike ako para gumanda ang kalusugan ko. Wala naman sigurong mag-o-object na minsan-misan ay ngingiti naman ako sa harap ng problemang iniwan sa akin na ginagawa ko sa kasalukuyan. Ano ho bang masama sa habang may kakayahan pa akong mag maneho ng ganung klaseng sasakyan dahil siguro naman pagbababa ko in 10 years from now, iba na iyung ating mga reflexes,” he said.

Aquino first drove the Porsche from Bahay Pangarap in Manila to Makati where he attended the Christmas party of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said Aquino is entitled to spend his own money anyway he wants to.

“It is a private purchase. If it was not depreciated, the President would not buy it. He would not even consider it.”

Lacierda said it is not surprising that Aquino bought himself a Porsche since, apart from shooting and reading, “part of his interests is cars.”

  3. I’m more concerned about his incompetence in governance rather than his purchase of this Porsche.

  6. Btw, Where did he get the money?

Pardon my asking this but where I sit, it’s a question that’s usually asked particularly if the politician does not have the salary to match the purchase of a certain item. Even if the politician is said to be “rich”, it’s a question that’s also asked, all in the spirit of transparency. If the person cannot explain it, then the Financial brigade starts their investigation discreetly. The voting public here want to make sure that no campaign money was funneled into the personal account of a politician because that would be not only unethical, it would be illegal.

So lucky you are folks in Pinas that govt financial investigators can be easily bought!

  7. So lucky you are in Pinas that the rich can bribe their way out of difficulties… 🙁

  8. henry90 henry90

So, he previously owns a BMW, nobody complained. Now, he sold that BMW and bought a third-hand(?) Porsche with the proceeds and someone is crying bloody hell? WTF? 😛

  9. Henry, a bmw is not a porsche… a porsche represents ostentation. My neighbour who is head of a security unit here has a bmw… it’s much like a benz around here. (I personally wouldn’t be caught dead driving a BMW, much prefer English cars 😛 , too nouveau riche… 😛 but that’s me.)

  10. I’d rather drive either a mini or an armoured Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue LHD (a favourite vehicle among farmers and hunters)

  11. If you really look at it closely, buying this 3rd hand car and at this price – the guy could be considered a cheapskate in our chinese community. SUVs cost a lot more. Looks can be deceiving. 🙂

  12. chi chi

    I agree with Ellen (#3).

As long as he acquired his P4.5M toy with his own money, I don’t see anything wrong with him enjoying it.

I’ve seen a lot of pinoys having more expensive cars lalo yung mahihilig sa kotse.

  14. chi chi

Actually, the latest of that model is about $70K bare. 🙂

  15. marc marc

Hurrah, the President bought a third hand Porsche!!!

May this translate to well maintained roads.

The President can expect a smooth ride going to Tarlac with the SCTEx. But I pray that the he drive the Porsche to other provinces (Visayas? Mindanao?), that his visits by car will bring more roads, more well maintained roads in the provinces.

  16. Anyway, as I said in a post on FB:

“In a sense, the cost of this 2nd hand car is reasonable. It’s just a little more than the cost of a brand new Volvo70 where I sit but a Porsche represents something else because it represents ostentation, needless luxury in the eyes of people particularly in a country where there is a vast number of really impoverished people.

Cost is not quite the issue but perception. It’s like some member of an NGO visiting a slum area in full jewelry regalia, diamonds and all.”

Pinas roads remind me of Harare (in Zimbabwe) roads 🙂 … but there are very expensive cars rolling on those Harare roads, sometimes a fleet of benzes and sometimes Rolls Royces… most of them owned by Mugabe.

  17. Ellen,

Speaking of competence in governance, here’s some good news:

Angry De Lima asks for sanction vs Ombudsman execs over Garcia plea-bargain deal – INQUIRER.net, Phi
    newsinfo.inquirer.net
MANILA, Philippines The lower officers of the Office of the Ombudsman should be subjected to disciplinary action for entering into the questionable plea-bargain agreement with former AFP comptroller Gen. Carlos Garcia, Justice Secretary Leila De Lima said.
    …/…
The Ombudsman can only be removed by impeachment. But the Office of the President has disciplinary powers over lower officers of the Office of the Ombudsman,” De Lima said.

There you are! So, there should be no problem. Aquino can kick asses and kick them hard he must. He can and must discipline them until they piss water! I’m sure he can do that with utmost competence. 😉

  18. henry90 henry90

    Anna:

A BMW is a BMW is a BMW in the Philippines. Jug is right. One thing though. He should not be seen driving it in highways. If the itch needs to be scratched, do it somewhere where he wouldn’t be seen in public.

  19. If the itch needs to be scratched, do it somewhere where he wouldn’t be seen in public.

Heh… agree! Besides, how on earth do you drive a fast car on roads like Pinas’ roads? Doesn’t make sense… I complain a lot driving on the highway here because of the cracks resulting from snow freeze as they can cause damage to the car and also because I am forced to slow down to turtlish 110kms/hr, what more in Pinas. (Sometimes I curse under my breath comparing the roads here to Pinas roads. 😀 😀 😀 )

  20. Belgian public works dept I suspect are much like DPWH in Pinas — corrupt! They put cheap stuff on the highway so you see cracks on the road after a long snow freeze. (That’s why I often curse the blasted Belgian govt and compare them to Pinoy govt.)

  21. What’s 4.5MPesos in dollars? 100K? (75K Euros?) Aquino got his car cheap!

Just checked out a website in Belgium: http://fr.autoscout24.be/details.aspx?id=185401350&extcidm=7918a0040172840&quid=510538294S900392T&gkid=x

    2nd hand Porshce:

Prix de vente (Sale price) : € 92.900,-

    Type de carrosserie : Coupé
    Kilométrage : 7.200 km
    1ère immatriculation : 09/2008
    Puissance: 353 kW (480 CH)
    Carburant : Essence
Couleur extérieure : CARRARA WIT [White Carrara]

  22. A second hand 2008 BMW depending on the model of course costs much less than a Porsche even if Porsche is 2007 model, example:

    BMW 3-Series 318I Executive Efficient Dynamic € 24,950

    BMW 3-Series Sedan 335i High Executive Automation € 39,895
    http://www.autotrack.nl/tweedehands/bmw/3-serie/6683919

Even a 2010 model of BMW is still much cheaper where I sit, example:

my sis got aBMW328xdrive 2009 at $40 grand (click my handle) and it is fast and very agile…i drove it like crazy along new jersey turnpike only to find out that i left my license in my own Mazda 5..(30 grand GT model, and I love it, it is built on Volvo s-40 platform). I check the Porshes prices and it start at $92 for just a plain 911 up to double and for the targas and speedsters, got to go to the dealers or send for the qoute…for me I prefer the BMW handling and performance especially their midsize 5 series, but that too is very expensive…plus our tax here is 13% on top of the negotiated price no such thing as luxury taxes.

  24. Hi Vic,

Just clicked your handle… a pretty car your sister has there. I recognise that a BMW is very very robust and hugely reliable car, classier too than a Benz (equivalent models of course) but I’m a bit of snob 😉 😛 in that I don’t like a BMW because every Tom, Dick and Harry here where I sit (security guards and butchers and whoever could get a car loan which is almost anybody and everybody) drives one roaring like they are in a Ferrari 🙂 so I usually prefer the English car, eg., a Jaguar, which was my previous car some 7 years ago when the kiddies were small; a Jaguar is bit more sedate but equally nice and robust. My husband has an English sports car and has always had only English sports cars (sadly they are getting very expensive to maintain); I think they are as pretty as a regular Porsche anyway. Today, I drive a Volvo70 because it’s a very good family car, enormous storage space in the boot, equally robust and hugely reliable much like a BMW — price is almost the same anyway.

  26. Vic, 13% Tax only? Wow!!! VAT here for cars is 21% here and these cars aren’t even imported because they come from the EU!!!

  27. Tedanz Tedanz

Puweeeeee……!!!!!

  28. henry90 henry90

    Pareng Tedanz:

Huwag mong masyado pahirapan sarili mo. hehehe. May nagreklamo ba? Mas mahal yun. Sa mga hindi nakakaunawa. Hindi bago yang Porsche. Segunda mano. Puweeee! hehehe. 😛

  29. vic vic

Anna, yes we just pay 8 for the province and 5 for the Federal, but that is never ending sales and services tax.. buying a used car, you still pay another 13% on top even if it is only a hundre dollars + 13 or the ministry oftransport will figure it out for you if you don`t have a deed of sale..Gifts and inheritance are not taxed though, but should be from close relatives.

BMW is much preferred here because of its handling even in show and most comes in 4 wheel drive so does the Mercedes 4matic..i drive the Mazda mini van since i have to carry the whole family most of the time..six seaters and it quite good in highway…my sis also drives the RAV 4 for heavy snow and in NY one get stolen or involves in collision anytime..so it is better to have two all the time…

  30. Mike Mike

PNoy’s purchase of a Porsche is none issue as far as I’m concerned. Agree with Ellen’s post #3. But having said that, you also cannot fault those who criticized him for his Porsche, especially his poor kababayans who can’t even afford to buy a motorcycle.

  31. Tedanz Tedanz

    Pareng Henry,

  33. Tedanz Tedanz

    Pareng Henry,

    2. We allow a purchase of a Porsche of someone who criticized the previous govt for 1 dinner that did not cost her a cent, for someone who said, “I am one of you” with the wangwang statement and the NY hotdog photo-op, for someone who promised a different kind of govt? With too much playtime, parties, drunken sprees, PSP with no time to visit the flood victims? Is it so wrong to demand more from the highest office of the land?

    6. Can you imagine what citizens of the UK or US would do if their leader makes a lavish purchase like a luxury sportscar, takes it for a spin in Subic at a time there are flood victims, a looming rice crisis, $940,000 to pay HK for the bus hostage victims, urban poor groups who have not had their appt for 4 months, a general who plundered millions and gets away with a slap on the wrist, an increase of 3M Filipinos hungrier than last year, increase in gas, toll, food and transportation prices?

It is only right that penoy be criticized. Failure in delikadesa, but it’s nobody’s business if penoy indulges himself with an old Porsche. Only thing is it would certainly be difficult for him to ride this car with a blond/otherwise in a bikini to the beach, if there would be takers.

He must have a lot of idle time in his hands to be daydreaming. He may be tiring of being president. That’s probably why Mar R. has been commissioned.

    TOY STORY

It’s Friday! Another work week is almost over! And what a week for Filipinos! Gas prices have gone up. The proposed MRT and LRT fare hike has been approved. And the President has a new sports car!

    New Toy

Something new is making President Aquino smile these days. For a change, it’s not a new date.

Reports say President Aquino ditched his BMW for a Porsche. And then, he felt weird. You know… he’s used to being ditched, not the other way around.

The President’s got a new toy, a 2007 model Porsche. When the new toy was delivered last December, did you know what he did first? He returned Joshua’s PSP.

I don’t think he stole money from the state coffers to buy the Porsche — don’t thinki any of the sort but what would be good is for him to account for the purchase. He is the president of the Philippines who campaigned on a platform of truth and transparency.

He must show where he got the funds to buy a Porsche. If he does, he can call every single member of the political world to account too for every expenditure they make that’s not in keeping with what they earn or make.

If he is indeed very rich and has the means to buy a multi-million peso high performance car (let’s forget about the propriety of driving around in a Porsche in a city where slums abound), it would be quite easy for him to account for the purchase. He must lead by example…

I would demand of Merkel the same thing in Germany (where Porsches are fairly ordinary but they are not in Pinas, or am I wrong? That Porsches are a dime a dozen in Pinas now?)

He could show his income tax return to prove that he has or had the income to pay for this kind of car. It would be setting the right example. Tax evasion can be resolved if ordinary people can be challenged to prove that their income is legit and that they pay the right income tax.

  59. President must lead by example. He then can call every politico in town to do the same. Show that whatever luxury purchase they make comes from income that is legit and for which they’ve paid appropriate taxes. An extraordinary opportunity for Aquino to inspire everyone to show proof that the’re not tax evaders. He must be able to defend his multi-milluon purchase purchase concretely and not with some general propaganda line “We’re rich and can pay for it!” (Heard that one from Mikey Arroyo, remember?)

so far, A de B’s comments 69=71 are the only positive ones I read in this thread. Leadership by example can be demonstrated even if driving a Porsche, an effective way also to open the flood gates to sweep tax evaders
    to jail.

Malacanang should now publish all pertinent documents. Deeds of Sale, Affidavits, official receipts of Taxes
paid, etc. Let P Noy open his bowels to the dogs so they may be asked tio also open theirs. That’s
    Transparency.

  62. Thanks, Humus!

And thanks Mike and Chi for the reply on where he got the money to pay for sports car. So, he must be greatly in debt now… geez!

I find all these discussions interesting.

Why don’t we make it a Comelec requirement that before any candidate runs for public office, he/she should promise to buy only the cheapest car in the market.

Ahh…but the thousands of tricycle drivers would find even that a bit luxurious. So how about they can only buy third hand tricycles?

@75: As henry90 articulated in the next tread….most of these politicians conceal their expensive cars or houses masquerading them as owned by relatives. These are talents acquired in congress and senate…or even before they’re elected…it’s a natural mental ability.
