Which early evening show did you watch last Monday?
Although there’s GMA-7’s “24 Oras”, the question refers to last Monday night’s battle royale between ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol and ABC-5’s Willing Willie.
Last Monday’s episode of TV Patrol marked the returned of Noli de Castro and Korina Sanchez-Roxas to the prime time news cast. Over at TV-5, it was the debut of Valenzuela councilor Shalani Soledad as co-host of Willie Revillame.
TV Patrol features an ex-vice president, an ex-congressman and wife of an ex-senator. Last Monday’s contest was also dubbed as the battle between ex-future first ladies. If you have no idea why “ex-future first ladies”, I suggest you click to goggle.
TV 5 claimed according to Nielsen, the firm that tracks TV viewership, Willing Willie trounced TV patrol with 11.6 percent share of the audience tying with GMA-7 24 Oras. TV Patrol got 10.7% of early evening audience.
That’s believable because I asked five of my friends what they watched last Monday and all of them answered: Shalani.
In the beginning, I was shifting to both channels: ABC-5 and ABS-CBN. But every time, I shifted to TV Patrol, it was de Castro on the screen. I had to shift back to Shalani.
De Castro has no credibility to me. Yes, of course, he just reads the news. But it is important that the one reading the news has credibility.
How can de Castro have credibility when he closed his eyes to the blatant tampering of election result by Gloria Arroyo in 2004. He kept quiet in the many anomalies about the Arroyo administration, among them the NBN/ZTE deal and the fertilizer scam? And he is back in TV broadcast?
Now, how was Shalani as TV host? Not so exciting as a TV variety show host but she looked natural and lovely. When she came out in that white tent dress, she was a picture of freshness and dignity amid those scantily-clad dancers.
She was obviously nervous so I can let pass her inane question to one of the contestants: “Ano ang masasabi mo ?” She was formerly a reporter , I expected better questions. She should learn from Willie who knows how to ask simple questions that make the masses feel cared like, “Saan pa kayo nanggaling? Ilang oras ang binyahe nyo bago kayo makarating dito? Sino ang naiwan sa bahay? Nanoood ba sila?”
On the second night, she was till a passive presence in the show, sticking to her rehearsed lines. The hyperactive tempo of the show suddenly slows down when its her turn. She has to be more than just a lovely presence in a game show to make her worth watching.
I am not a fan of Willie Revillame. I don’t like the culture of idiocy that he propagates. But I have to recognize that he has indeed shaken the smugness of the two giant TV new networks. His and TV-5’s idea of putting an entertainment show in a time slot traditionally reserved for news was a bold move and time will tell whether he was more attuned to the sentiments of the viewing public. If we are to base it on the Nielsen tracking which was carried by Philippine Star’s Billy Esposo in his column, “Willing-Willie” is doing well gaining for TV 5 double digit rating in Metro Manila which it never experienced in its 20 years of existence.
The Nielsen Oct 29 over night report, according to Esposo, showed TV Patrol in the national level leading with 13.0% (ranked #5) followed by 24 Oras with 10.4% (#8) and Willing Willie with 7.1% (#19).
In Mega Metro Manila, it’s 24 Oras ahead with 10.8% (# 8), TV Patrol with 9.0% (#13), and Willing Willie closing in, only one point behind, with 8% (# 15). GMA-7 and especially ABS-CBN have reasons to worry about.
how did willie start out? he seems like a guy who’s come a long way…i didnt even notice him come up like the tito, vic and joey guys – he seemed like a mushroom to me, you know, you just see them one morning in places they werent there before…
Hahaha!!!
Liz is very classy. Stylist and very good friend of Kris Aquino.
i heard that teachers now take their students on field trips to inane tv shows like wowowee, eat bulaga, and now willing-willie whereas in my time, we were taken on field trips to museums, zoos, and historical landmarks. hurrah for philippine basic education!
Swerte lang ni Willie at sinalo siya ni MVP, the guy with the Midas touch.
I think one of the reasons why Maria Ressa resigned from ABS CBN was because she disagreed with management on the Noli & Korina comeback.
By the way, what happens now to Karen Davilla and Julius Babao? Are they still with the network?
Oh, thanks Ellen. Happy na siguro si Kris nyan. 🙂
I’m not Willie’s fan and will never be. I can’t stand his attitude. ABS-CBN was so good to him but look at what he did to them. He should be reminded to never bite the hands that fed him big time.
I have no problem with Shalani but Liz Uy is a nice and decent person as well.
Mel Tiangco obviously can’t compete with Willie’s scantily clad babes. I wonder whether Korina can.
Sometimes curiosity is the beginning of big things to come. The public reception of Shalani, is somewhat expected considering that she’s the “ex” of someone called Noynoy.
Being a newcomer in the field of showbiz, it’s acceptable to see her somewhat hesitant to say or do things. Now it all depends on her stage performance if the reception will continue on a roll or stagnate or worse decline; but then again, she’s in good company in the person of a proven successful host, although personally never a fan of him.
I am beginning to feel like a fan and I wish her success to
succeed in her new “career”.
As Noynoy said, “Good luck to her”.
Shalani gave a whole new meaning of “public service” when she consented for the job as co-host in the profit-oriented entertainment show…
Puede na rin siguro ang definition…IF there really is no talent fee for her to speak of…
Politics and showbiz are synonymous in Pinas, talaga naman!
Willie thought he was untouchable and dared to challenge the giants of ABS-CBN. He was actually the protege of Kabayan Noli de Castro’s wife who’s very influential with the big bosses. But when he challenged and insulted the management on nationwide TV, that was the last straw.
Willie was a street bump and still behave like one today. Babaero na bastos pa. He’s identified with shady characters too. Good thing he got away with that car smuggling case. He’s also into partnership with alleged crook presidential losing candidate Manny Villar.
Shalani is a nice decent woman. What made her decide to join Willie in the show puzzles me. Willie is known to have flirted with his female talents in his programs. Shalani better watch out with this bad boy.
I feel sorry for Karen. She’s such a great talent. Sino naman ang hindi masasaktan. But she needs to be professional enough to respect the management decision. Otherwise, she can move on. I’m sure other stations like TV5 are more than willing to take her in. I personally don’t agree Noli de Castro returning as anchor man. He doesn’t need the talent fee. He doesn’t need the job. Sobrang yaman na iyan. But most of all, he has lost credibility by being implicated in some scandals like the Legacy Plan and Pag-ibig loans. That’s only my opinion, though.
Just watched the show on youtube. Uhm, no comment…. hehehe 😉
Yes Perl, dapat palitan si Mike Enriquez. There are times parang kina-kain niya ang kanyang mga sinasabi. Na parang nabubulol. That is why I seldom watch 24 Oras. I like Saksi.
Failon and Sanchez should have been enough.
Is Ging Reyes calling the shots already, Ellen?
I’m watching willie’s new show now, first time i saw shalani hosting…funny, usually i like to watch the scantily clad women…but i think i’m in love…who wouldn’t be? good thing i wasn’t in noynoy’s shoes, i would’ve given up the presidency just to be with her… 🙂
good grief…i can save a lot of money watching this show, no need to go to quezon av or roxas boulevard anymore…
Shalani vs. Korina. Both P.Noy’s ex-GFs.
From Redge Sarniento:
I think Venus Raj is better in showbiz if she wants to pursue this career.
The more you look at her, the more you like her.
Willing Willie…a spring_board to higher position? Bordering on the unethical behavior? Let’s wait for the coming polls…
Maganda lang siya…at disimulado…
I met Shalani personally and even had a picture with her…heh, heh, heh. She is tall, makinis and demure. She has the qualities, physically, to be an actress or be in the show business. Sa malaunan, she will get better. She deserves to pursue any profession she wants.
Mabilis talaga itong si Willie. Nakita niya kaagad ang potential boost sa kanyang new show, no other than the ex-First Lady to be sana.
It is also a fact that the show business is a spring board to BIG politics…Erap, Jingoy,Revilla, Lapid etc. Ni hindi mo nga nakitang nag-ikot yan noong election campaign period, yet they overwhelmingly won. Libre na ang ads nila because of their screen exposure.
Shalani has political ambitions. She knows how to start on the right foot. Good for her.
Maganda lang siya…at disimulado… baycas
May ibig kang sabihin, baycas? I-tweet mo sa akin. 🙂
Willie thought he was untouchable and dared to challenge the giants of ABS-CBN.
ANOTHER personality whose “objectivity” or objective presence seems out-of-place is Valenzuela City councilor Shalani Soledad, who, according to rumors, is already the “former” girlfriend of President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
Soledad made headlines when she agreed to join the show “Willing Willie” as the co-host of the hyperactive and controversial Willie Revillame. Since Revillame was a vocal supporter of defeated presidential candidate Sen. Manny Villar, Soledad’s coming on board cannot but be tainted with political overtones.
There have even been rumors that Revillame is talking to James Yap, the basketball star and former spouse of P-Noy’s sister Kris, to convince him to join “Willing Willie,” too. In which case, the show might as well be headlined “the home of discarded Aquino loves.”
Surely Soledad and Yap realize that they were (or are being) recruited not for their scintillating personalities and celebrity alone, but also for their (broken) “ties” to the President. In which case they might well ask why they should allow themselves to be used in such a manner.
From Mariano Calvenia:
