Our efforts to get clarification on why Hongkong Chief Executive Donald Tsang was not able to talk with President Aquino during last Monday’s hostage-taking crisis has led us to more confusion.
In his press conference Monday evening, after eight of the 22 Hongkong nationals on a sightseeing visit to the Philippines ended up dead when a dismissed policemen held them hostage for 12 hours, Tsang said “since 4pm” he had been trying to call up Aquino “but all efforts failed.”
The tragedy has resulted in diplomatic fall-outs. The Philippine consulate in Hongkong has been a scene of emotional protests from Hongkong nationals. Philippine Airlines and Manila hotels have reported cancellation of tourists reservations.
Beijing has refused to receive the top-level delegation (Vice President Jejomar Binay, Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, and Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda) being sent by Aquino until such time that investigation on the tragedy is completed.
The three officials were supposed to have left Thursday for Hongkong and Beijing. Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Jiang Yu “We believe that the most urgent task is to have a complete investigation of the matter as soon as possible.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs had to come out with a statement that “While the delegation is ready to leave anytime, there is an understanding between both sides that the Philippine delegation will bring a full report of Monday’s incident.”
After last Monday’s debacle, the Aquino government seems hardpressed to repair the diplomatic strain with economic giant China, and its prosperous administrative region. Informed by media about Tsang’s statement in his press conference held first hours of Tuesday, Aquino professed that he did not know about Tsang’s call. To make up for that lapse, Aquino called up Tsang the next day.
We inquired what really happened to have caused what we consider a serious diplomatic blunder and we were told by a Malacañang official, who declined to be named, that while monitoring Monday’s hostage situation, Aquino told his staff that he won’t be taking any calls unless it’s extremely important.
The official said when Tsang called, the one who took the call didn’t know who Donald Tsang is. Following the President’s instruction, the staff member did not pass on the call to Aquino.
Secretary Ricky Carandang, one of the two heads of the Aquino’s Communication office, clarified yesterday that the aide who got the call from the office of Donald Tsang knew who he is but they wanted to make sure of the authenticity of the caller because it was made
through the Malacañang trunk line without prior notice.
Aquino’s aide told Tsang’s aide to “put the phone down and we will call you through our foreign minister.”’
Carandang said Presidential spokesman Ed Lacierda called up the spokesman of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ed Malaya, to convey their request to set up a call between Tsang and Aquino.
My sources in the DFA said the Philippine Consul General in Hongkong, Claro Cristobal, also relayed the request of the office of Tsang for him to talk with Aquino.
It’s a mystery now why that request was not complied with. Was the request relayed to Malacañang? If Malacañang told Romulo’s office to call up Tsang, why was it not arranged when Hongkong was also trying to contact Aquino?
Carandang, in his explanation to Raissa Robles of the South China Morning Post, said they followed up the instruction to DFA to set up the call between Aquino and Tsang.“Lacierda tried to phone Malaya again three times but could not reach him,” he said.
Carandang said in the flurry of the hostage rescue fiasco, the call to Tsang was not attended to anymore until it was too late and the HK executive had already expressed his disappointment in a press conference.
We talked with Malaya about Malacañang’s claim of the DFA’s failure return Tsang’s call but he declined to give any comment.
South China Morning Post reported that Tsang said in a video posted on the internet that he was finally able to talk with Aquino last Tuesday: “The first thing he told me was that he was sorry for not having called me back [on Monday] because he was then busy commanding the operation.”
Just when we thought the bungling of Tsang’s Monday call to Aquino has been clarified, the Inquirer came out with a report yesterday headlined “Palace exec doubts HK chief called Aquino during hostage crisis.”
It was based in yesterday’s morning TV interview where Coloma, commenting on Aquino’s failure to take Tsang’s call said, “Di kapanipaniwala yan ’dahil accessible siya sa lahat ng oras [That is unbelievable because the President is accessible all the time],”
Coloma also said, “If [Tsang] called the office of the President, his call will be received. Even if the President left the Palace for a short while, he could still be reached because his mobile phones are with his aides,”
Coloma, in the afternoon, issued a statement saying Inquirer’s headline of the story “is not correct.”
He explained that “When I was interviewed over ABS-CBN this morning, I did not state nor imply any ‘doubts (that the) HK chief called (President) Aquino during (the) hostage crisis’ last Monday.
“The report quotes me as having said, ‘Di kapanipaniwala yan dahil ‘accessible’ siya sa lahat ng oras.’ (That is unbelievable because the President is accessible all the time).
“What I referred to as being unbelievable was the claim published in earlier newspaper reports that President Aquino was “inaccessible” at that time.”
A foreign diplomat who is closely monitoring news reports on last Monday’s tragedy said he is more confused now. We share his confusion.
“Beijing has refused to receive the three-man delegation (Vice President Jejomar Binay, Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, and Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda) being sent by Aquino until such time that investigation on the tragedy is completed.”
Nalintikan na! In toto…PNOy failed his first baptism of fire. Please dear Lord, don’t give him another one….until he’s prepared.
It’s better for those clowns to keep their mouths shut if they’re unsure of what they’re gonna say. Geeezzzz!!!
-Chi
You said it, Chi. That is what is happening to us.
It seems like all the kings men and all the kings horses are stumbling over each other…its time for the king to take the lead then…
Ellen, just an observation…apparently ay hindi dumaan sa diplomatic protocol ang high-level delegation ni PNOy kasi pinagsarhan sila ng pinto ng Beijing. Ayan ang napala nila sa kapo-protocol kay Tsang in times of the hostage crisis when communication between the two leaders of the country was paramount.
A true leader is flexible in times of needs especially when human beings lives are at stake. Que at presidente pa sila?
Hindi kaya obvious kina Carandang na ang call has got to do with the crisis so it has to be attended to right away? Did it not occur to them that Tsang and chinese people match? Sa panahon ng crisis, do away with protocols and just simply use common sense.
Spot on, martina! Common sense is the name of the game sometimes.
Secretary of Communication, Coloma, stated that Aquino was “accessible all the time” and doubted that Tsang called.
Secretary of Communication, Carandang, stated that at the time Tsang, Head of Government of HK, called his Pres. Aquino was at the meeting.
Even among themselves, these Secretaries are bungling their cover ups.
Beg your pardon, Mr. Carandang…what prior notice are you talking about, this was an EMERGENCY and to admit that the aide knew who Mr. Tsang was, then why not take the call or follow up the authentication very, very quickly.
Now, I would suggest to Pres. Aquino to let go these many spokespersons who in their very First test of integrity Failed Big time..their cover ups is showing its slips.
The first version of Malacañang stated that the one who received the call does not know who Tsang was and that’s why the call from the Head of Government of HK was never forwarded to Aquino.
Now, Carandang is saying that Aquino’s aide knew who Tsang was but not sure if it is really him that’s why call was not forwarded.
The Chinese newspaper said Malacañang contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs so that it could “set up a phone call through Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, in what would be diplomatic protocol.”
The newspaper also quoted presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda as saying he called DFA spokesman Ed Malaya to convey the request to arrange a conversation between Tsang and Aquino.
“No word came back, so Lacierda tried to phone Malaya again three times but could not reach him,” the newspaper said.

——–
The crisis lasted about 12 hours. It took Aquino three more hours before he showed up on TV.
In those 15 hours Malacañang was not able to have a communication with DFA Sec. Romulo and DFA spokesperson Ed Malaya so that they can arrange conversation between Aquino and Tsang.
Who are they kidding?
so many excuses, why are they not honest enough to accept that there was indeed communication lapses on the part of the government’s “Communication Group”? Two secretaries for a similar function yet this huge diplomatic blunder? How weak….
A very disappointing start, the Palace is blaming everybody when in fact they did nothing significant to pacify this sad incident. Weak choice of alter-egos, what more can we expect from a weak president?
Heads must roll and Pres Aquino must accept that heads must roll but fellow commenter Manuel Buencamino who also happens to be a blooger as well as a newspaper suggested that a “good pimp-slapping would suffice for now.”
In that case, Aquino must bitch slap the incompetent guys around him so hard — Romulo most especially, that will leave their ears ringing for a very very long time and so loud the bitch slapping will be heard from Luneta to Timbuktu.
When will Aquino realise that he’s got a blundering idiot for a foreign affairs secretary?
I’ll say it again: Sec Albert Romulo, as the foreign relations “expert” miserably and disgracefully failed to do his job. Why didn’t he insist that Aquino make contact with Tsang within the first 60 minutes of the siege to assure HK at the very least that RP govt was doing something to solve the impasse? He’s supposed to be the bloody foreign affairs expert!
Instead, he waited 5 hours (per reports) for Tsang’s aide’s to call back!!!! Good Lord! Why didn’t he initiate the blasted call instead?
Romulo’s excecrable non-performance has caused the Philippines, the RP presidency, Filipinos, etc., etc., untold international political damage.
Remember, this is the same guy who refused to stand up for or to support the claim of the poor WWII comfort women for fear of upsetting his moroni idea of balance of power in the region, i.e., Japan’s standing. The guy is total surrender shit. When will Aquino realise this?
Why, the guy can’t seem to think beyond his backside!
Goddammit! One didn’t need to be a protocol or foreign affairs expert to know this. All one’s got to do is to read newspapers and to mimick what other heads of state do under the circumstances. He didn’t even have to think from his backside as he’s been wont to do most of the time.
Aquino should send Romulo packing. He owes Romulo NOTHING!!! He owes the Filipino people plenty. It’s time for him to get up from his backside, not be lackadaisical and to crack the whip to retrieve a bit — just a bit, of national dignity from the rubbish bin. Heads must roll.
Manuel naman, with a major major faux pas committed by PNoy’s staff and Bert Romulo’s DFA, minor minor lang ang parusa?!
Gosh, with a high 88% approval rating of PNoy, baka bumulusok pababa yan without him showing major major progress and improvement in the way he handles his people.
Being a pinoy at heart as a reason to retain them would further show a weak weak PNoy’s leadership.
It is better to just NOT say anything for now! Lalo lang silang nagmumukhang tanga! Definitely heads must roll. The hostage fiasco is maybe so much for Robledo to handle. I am not fond of him but I know his capability to handle situations like these). Definitely Romulo should RESIGN or be terminated, pronto! Trabaho niya ito. If he did his job, there was not even a need for Tsang to call. The moment the situation turned ugly, Romulo should have put on his working clothes and went to Pnoy’s side to brief him to communicate with the HK leadership. Ang yes, Verzosa should resign as well. While it is true that the Manila PNP chief should be given the chance to do his job, when the situation became fluid, Verzosa should have been there for the addditional support. Something has to be done to Mayor Lim too who ordered the termination of Mendoza without due process and who ordered the arrest (?) of the brother. Kaya naman pala si Manila Vice Mayor Isko Moreno ang nasa front line coz Mayor Lim was the brains in the Mendozas miseries.
Uncle Sam is smiling…
PSB, Chi,
Agree — Versoza, who’s announced that he’s leaving in a few months anyway, must not let go without a hard, ringing pimp slap at the very least
Aquino must stop baby sitting Versoza. The guy is already a big boy (he’s proven it by pandering to the Aquino gallery during the campaign season) and is perfectly capable of looking out for himself for crying out loud!
The guy botched his job big time, failed his mission big time, was a perfect picture of ineptitude and incompetence big time, and today, those blasted command shortcomings outweighed his Aquino loyalty virtue.
Robredo must submit his resignation. We all believed he was an honourable man and so must show it for raison d’état. Up to Aquino to accept but he must appease the aggrieved. Tendering his resignation will be a good way to do it.
Attempting to do damage control by sending a so-called heavyweight delegation to HK and Beijing without a clear cut mission was clumsy in the extreme — it smacked of a knee jerk reaction and the Chinese saw through the ploy. Too early too soon — if Aquino had sacked a few heads in the morning following the carnage, maybe, the Chinese would have found the damage control move credible.
Aquino must remember that he’s got enemies left right and center — with sly Gloria pimping on the side, her team Gloria gloating all over (just read she wrote a letter to Tsand and to the Chinese Premier), he cannot procrastinate; he must show presidential mettle. Gloria and her bitch team will bury him alive and the Philippines with him if they can.
8 HK citizens killed and the whole Hongkong territory showed indignation and outrage led by their chief executive, in sharp contrast, 57 filipinos were massacred in maguindanao and former phil pres.gma treated ampatuan criminals like VIPs, because the criminals were her partner in crimes, and allowed the ampatuans to continue ordering killings of more filipinos, about time filipinos show indignation and outrage against criminals like the ampatuans, rep ronald singson, rep ecleo, rep mikey arroyo, gma, villar, etc…
Blunder after blunder after blunder. It’s getting to be depressing. Now these PNoy men are covering their asses and making more blunders all the way. And to think that all these errors are getting international attention. What a country. PNoy’s experts are no experts. They are playing with the country’s welfare and international goodwill. Actually they are squandering it needlessly. This incident has reach immeasurable proportions cabinet secretaries should be tendering their courtesy resignation to give PNoy some bargaining goodwill. If not, then we the people will suffer for their comedy of errors.
It now appears PNoy has not prepared himself to be a real President of RP. Sad to say I am fast losing my trust and faith in him this early. It shows he could easily be destabilized by his opposition, much worse he will play into their hands.
All they think about are themselves and would never admit their mistakes. There’s no love of country in them. In other countries given the same situation, they probably had already commited harakiri out of shame.
Good news naman tayo:
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/199451/rp-2q-gdp-grows-by-79-widest-since-2007
The Philippine economy expanded by 7.9 percent in the second quarter – or the last three months of the Arroyo administration – reflecting the widest quarterly growth since the second quarter of 2007, and compares with the 1.2 percent growth in the second quarter of 2009.
Agree with Anna, resignations are in order starting from the DILG chief to the DFA including the PNP. Sayang, I like Robredo. Coloma and Carandang should probably go too.
I worry about our OFWs in HK.
The growth was high too in the 2007 elections. Just the same, I am glad we economically grew. i just hope that the hostage incident will not pull the growth down this quarter.
“Beijing has refused to receive the top-level delegation (Vice President Jejomar Binay, Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo, and Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda) being sent by Aquino until such time that investigation on the tragedy is completed.”– I told you so.
I am not condoning the acts of Mendoza. I am just curious as to why this person went to the extreme. Who is this Kalaw that the policemen caught? Is he related to the politician? I hope he didnt use influence to kick the policemen out of the service. NAPOLCOM had already cleared the policemen of wrongdoing. Why did it reach the ombudsman?
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/199530/senate-panel-wants-hostage-takers-phone-record
mistake can not be corrected by another mistake, sec Robredo is one of the best cabinet member of P.Noy, those who were blaming him were taking advantage of this situation to further their selfish political agenda against the filipino people. Sen Zubiri cheated to gain senate seat, and other lapdogs of gma were exploiting this hostage taking to sabotage P.Noy’s good intention to serve people. Sen. Zubiri, Cong Lagman, Suarez were part of the evil regime of gma. Why don’t anyone of them say anything about drug trafficking crime of Rep Ronald Singson, torturer cop binayug, rapist and killer Ecleo in congress, etc..
Aquino wants strike force vs hostage-taking, other crises
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/199555/aquino-wants-strike-force-vs-hostage-taking-other-crises#
It was indeed a major, major faux pas which will further strain relationship with China. As a result, it will be a major, major problem for the fledgling Aquino administration.
Text message:
The worst thing that PNoy will do now in this present situation is if he tries to save the asses of his men (police, DILG, spokesman, DFA, etc…) who bungled on their jobs. Agree with Anna that heads should roll, no matter who’s.
No sacred cows, Mr. President. The whole world is watching.
Isagani – #36 August 27, 2010 11:44 am
Do you really need to categorize the Chinese people to make a comment? You sound like a bigot? Chekwa! Instik!
In all honesty, if China intends to conquer us or exploit our natural resources forcefully, they can do so in a matter of days and no allies of us can do anything about it. Even you. What happened is not something anyone can ignore. It has a very clear and bad implication to our relation with China and Hong Kong. Most Chinese who visits us appreciates us as tourist, and they are our guest. Many of our kababayan rely on them to live. In addition, there are many OFW in China and Hong Kong. Pati sila damay. May pagkukulang ang pinas sa nangyari as can be seen in the video footage! We too suffer from these people. I just hope pnoy will do the right thing. Sipain those who are responsible to include those in the Office of the Ombudsman who are careless and for mishandling the case of thepolice turned hostage taker! File administrative charges sa kapatid nito na gumawa ng eksena na nag palala ng situation, base on his comments. They put us all in an embarrassing and dangerous situation.
Peace!
China condemns draping of RP flag over hostage taker’s coffin
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/199565/china-condemns-draping-of-rp-flag-over-hostage-takers-coffin
The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines on Friday strongly condemned the draping of the Philippine flag over the coffin of dismissed police inspector Rolando Mendoza who killed eight Hong Kong tourists whom he held hostage in a bus in Manila on Monday.
In a phone interview with GMANews.TV, Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning head Ricky Carandang said the placing of the Philippine flag was done by Mendoza’s family and not by the Philippine government.
“This was an act of the family,” Carandang said. “Nobody from the government has ordered that.”
Pambihirang patay yan oh! Nakuha pang manginis!
Darn! Burahin yung “made in china na coffin”, pati yan pag-initan.
“In all honesty, if China intends to conquer us or exploit our natural resources forcefully, they can do so in a matter of days and no allies of us can do anything about it.” – olan
This will never happen, Uncle Sam will howl…besides, other foreigners already milked the island of it’s natural resources (minerals/lumber), natotoyo na ang pinas.
Never heard of “chekwa”. Use of Intsik is racist?
I think, all of these are weak up calls…..my food for thought.
~Isagani
RE: In addition, there are many OFW in China and Hong Kong. Pati sila damay. ~Olan
Well, there also milyon of .. in our country…so damay din sila?
Oblak, re your question #35.
Here’s the Inquirer story on Coloma’s TV interview. You can read the quotes.
http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/nation/view/20100826-288868/Palace-exec-doubts-HK-chief-called-Aquino-during-hostage-crisis
Palace exec doubts HK chief called Aquino during hostage crisis
By Christine O. Avendaño
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 11:07:00 08/26/2010
MANILA, Philippines – Reports that Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang had called President Benigno Aquino III at the height of Monday’s hostage crisis in Manila were “unbelievable” because the President was “accessible all the time,” a communication official of Malacanang said Thursday.
“Di kapanipaniwala yan ’dahil accessible siya sa lahat ng oras [That is unbelievable because the President is accessible all the time],” Secretary Herminio Coloma, head of the Presidential Communications and Operations Office, told ABS-CBN’s program “Umagang Kay Ganda”.
Coloma was reacting to Tsang’s reported frantic phone calls to Mr. Aquino last Monday and his complaint that he could not reach the Philippine leader.
“If [Tsang] called the office of the President, his call will be received. Even if the President left the Palace for a short while, he could still be reached because his mobile phones are with his aides,” Coloma said.
Palace official said that Mr. Aquino was not aware that Tsang had called him but when he learned about it, he called Hong Kong’s top official on Tuesday to express his government’s deep sorrow for the hostage crisis that ended with the death of eight Hong Kong tourists.
Still on Oblak’s query #35
Here’s the statement of Coloma issued later in the afternoon:
Statement of Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma on the Inquirer story on Pres. Aquino’s failure to take Donald Tsang’s call during the hostage crisis:
At the end of the day, we must remember that the hostage taker, bemedalled cop that he was (or not), was responsible for this tragedy.
The blundering idiots who were responsible with negotiating with him, i.e., police commander, mayor, PNP chief, DILG chief, mayor, etc., are equally to be blamed because they failed to appreciate the situation. After a few hours of stand off with no visible result — a police or military sniper should have taken him down. There was no choice, there were far too many hostages to even contemplate not taking him down as soon as it was physically possible, i.e., especially when he became visible to the naked eye.
Re: China condemns draping of RP flag over hostage taker’s coffin
They feel aggrieved and have the moral right to strongly condemn the act.
However, if the family did it, the govt is not to blame although what I find strange is that govt surrendered the body to the family so soon. Shouldn’t they have kept it in the city morgue for whatever?
“Aquino wants strike force vs hostage-taking, other crises”
Perl,
“wants strike force” ?
He should say, “I’m creating a strike force.” Gosh, he sounds do lally.
Why the cover up about PNoy’s whereabouts ? Something is fishy ? My guess is that PNoy was not on top of it. Even today, there is no deadline on the investigation being done by PNP. PNoy is passing on to media to censor itself — in a crisis ? Susmaryosep !!!
i think this crises had several stages and not all can be blamed on pnoy. but from the time the hostages were killed, everything rested on him and he should take the responsibility of the development.
Hiya norpil! Of course, “With great power comes great responsibility.”
Norphil, Noynoy admitted, not in a very direct manner, fault for what happened. He apologized for it, apologized to Tsang for not the inability to call him, even apologized for smiling when he was at the scene of the event, taking all the flacks from the international community and sadly from his countrymen. What else can he possibly do? Resign as president of the country?
maybe Rep Ronald Singson could be exchanged for the lives of the victims, anyway he is a member of the Phil House of Representatives, and he is now detained in Hongkong for drug trafficking. Filipinos would not mind to have one less criminal politician in their midst.
Thanks Ms. Ellen posts numbers 53 and 54. I re-read them after your post. Anyway, kung wala talaga, I will give the reporter the benefit of the doubt kaysa kay Coloma.
As far as the Hongkong Officials are concerned, pwede na kayang sabihing moot ang issue ng phone call mix up sa article na ito:
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/08/27/10/hong-kong-chief-says-aquino-has-apologized

This is the quote taken from the link above:
“President Aquino rang me up and he apologized for the event. He felt particularly sorrowful for what had happened and he also apologized that he could not return my call because he was totally engaged in supervising the operation,” he said in a video address on Friday.
———
“….could not return my call(Tsang’s call) because he was totally engaged in supervising the operation.”
So, Aquino received the call and knew it was HK’s Head of Government…..
Previously, Aquino said that he never knew that Tsang called until he saw him on TV closed to tears complaining about failed attempts to have conversation with Noynoy.
The call was never made by Noynoy to Tsang until after an ambassador or consul of HK/China paid him a visit the following day, the day after the massacre of hostages.
Noynoy could not even give a coherent lies…..lol

…its so sad also that some of our countrymen do not realize that insulting the president is insulting the country…spitting against the wind…tanga!
The chinese may be laughing at us or are looking at us with more contempt as they see how readily we mock our leaders and break apart after this crises…
…we should show a united front…no matter what…
Observer, the quote could be interpreted in different ways and you chose one of them. Either way, the Chinese officials understood the statement and accepted the apologies. The Chinese accepted the apologies and it is to them that the apologies were directed.
Or would you rather the President admit to the Chinese officials that President knew it was him calling but he would not like to talk to them and because of this he giving them lies all the time and the President should resign from office.
Is that the only way you can depend your incompetent President?
Give me a reason why your President is not lying?
Give me a reason why he does not deserve to be insulted by people around the world after putting many HK ofw in financial harm and probably more abuses from the people of HK?
Not only that, he put the Filipino race in shame.
Give me a coherent reason, please, mr. juggernaut.

I beg to disagree with you Ellen that there are more confusion now than ever. Actually, try to analyze things . .
We have to respond not react, we have to respond as a country, as a family…we must not alow our national pride to be trampled by foreigners and confused countrymen who have filipino blood but act as if they are foreigners…rotting fish smelling prostitutes like obverver here!
The problem with you mr. juggernaut, and other fanatics, is you never see it as a fault of your President, it is always the fault of someone else.
So, just because we are Filipinos, we should never insult the President after what he did to us?
Just because we are Filipinos, we should look the other way if your President made us a laughing stock of the world?

The term chekwa is about as pleasant as nigger, Jewboy, or faggot.
Sinamahan pa ng “bobo”.
Not a comment you’d expect from a fan of Steven Covey. Kasama ba yan sa seven habits?
Apparently, it is olan who practices the fifth habit “seek first to understand and then to be understood”.
————————————–
yes. correct ka dyan..but there are times when I want to be just plain human, to make mistakes, to get angy, to smash faces in, to stomp on somebody…short of taking a busload of slant eyes hostage!
I beg to disagree Mr. Observer. I support Noynoy as a President but it does not mean that I will turn blind when he commits a patently wrong act. In the other thread, I posted that I will not find any good reason if it was Noynoy who ordered the removal of the Filipino flag draped on the coffin of Mendoza. I consider that as patently wrong because Mendoza is a fellow Filipino.
In this particular crisis, aside from some unfavorable words from the Chinese, I am not aware of any worldwide condemnation by world leaders directed against the Philippine President for what happened. He may had been criticized by foreign media for his actions or perceived inactions during the hostage crisis but I haven’t read anything attributing the death of the Chinese tourists to the President.
Insult is a not a pleasant word. I consider the comments of some posters criticizing Noynoy as criticisms.
I agree with you that even as Filipinos we can insult the President and I did that when GMA was president. It is just that at this time, I find no reason yet to insult Aguino as president.
snv,
there are times, when i really just want to throw all the books out he window and just do a “huramentado” or whatever they do in the old days…
Jug, ang puso mo. Alalay lang compadre.
Please do.
Remember to do it at the Office of the Ombudsman.
Remember that the President you are defending is a Cojuangco on his mother’s side. A descendant of Ko Huang Ko, also a “slanteye”.
In fact, the mother of Benigno Aquino Sr. is Guadalupe Quiambao, obviously, also a “slant eye”.
The reason why I don’t find any reason to insult the current president is because he’s the only president I actually voted for…
..I boycotted most elections after college (because of a gf in lfs), I travel a lot after that, we didn’t really vote in arroyo after two years of erap and i wasn’t here during the time there was another election…
…so practically, Pnoy has been, and is the only president i ever had…and i’m not a good loser, by god he (we) must do well even if we have to move heaven and earth to do so!
n fact, the mother of Benigno Aquino Sr. is Guadalupe Quiambao, obviously, also a “slant eye”.

ooops. oo nga pala…the reason why the chinese community supported him…there you go again snv…
…i’m too emotionally charged right now to think straight…i better get some sleep…
…snv, “kittos”
Just because we are Filipinos, we should look the other way if your President made us a laughing stock of the world?
Pnoy is expressing humility and I do respect him for that and it’s the right thing to do! but don’t forget the facts, many times over, our own in government made us a laughing stock of this world. Sila ang numero unong nangbabalasubas sa atin for many many years dahilan sa kanilang aronganteng pamumuno! yun pala dilehensiya lang ang talagang motibo!
We can start by cleaning our government and I am hoping pnoy will do so!
The reason why I’m not insulting him is because he doesn’t deserve to be insulted. Criticise him perhaps, lampoon him, maybe, vent frustrations at him, why not? But insult him? I agree with Jug, we shouldn’t insult him. The man has been in office less than 60 days. He inherited a legacy that’s absolute rubbish, he’s surrounded by incompetent men, people who were suppose to help him run this nation.
Admittedly, the man’s command responsibility was severely tested and he failed in his first baptism of fire but to go as far as to insult him? I don’t know. Will that make us wiser? Grow taller in the eyes of the world? Make us more loveable to the Chinese? I’m not so sure.
If Aquino has publicly expressed deep apologies on behalf of the entire nation to the Chinese people, I believe he’s done what is humanely required of a president to do today. He must learn and learn fast and we must help him not by continued self flagellations or self-inflicting moral damage, bashing ourselves until we fight among ourselves, etc., but by telling him in no uncertain terms that we will not pardon him easily the second time around.
Be objective Jug. You can defend Pnoy all you want but his weaknesses are obviosly showing even sooner than we thought. It is not enough that a president has the heart and “integrity”. I want a president who looks at the problems and solves them. Not someone who always apologizes for his people and himself all the time. Come on, Pnoy, you have to be more decisive than that! If Pnoy’s men erred, he has to remove them! If he doesn’t, the plotters are going for another assault! Pretty soon, he may end up like Erap. The left hand should know what the right hand does. Remove the culprits from their posts.
It would be interesting to know who brought Mendoza to the bus and who was on the phone before he started shooting.
– jug
I don’t what to give it up either…hahaha

Ok, mr. juggernaut, I can read your reasoning now. That’s all I am asking for.
As to other commenters, like Oblak and Olan, I don’t mean to ignore you but I just don’t have time right now.
Goodnight.

where…the Office of the Ombudsman! I wish many will do not just jug!
It is fine with me, Observer. It is all for a healthy discussion.
Parasabayan, according to the police, the last call came from a landline phone and from a radio station, I am not sure if it was DZMM.
Kaya nga I keep saying, with the exception of Robredo, it was practically Gloria’s men running the show.
**************
Balikan ko yung Manila Pen incident, if the PNP (especially NCRPO’s Santiago) were so keen then on removing the media from the scene where two unarmed prominent people were about to be “neutralized”, how come they were lax in Luneta when it involved a heavily armed nut. Does it mean that the possibility of killing their targets was greater at the Pen than in Luneta? Or was it intentional that they made sure the whole Luneta event is covered live for the world to see?
Note, Santiago was in command in both incidents.
Hmmm… Tongue, what you have outlined seems to be an exciting opening of a conspiracy theory. Good Lord! But what on earth for? To embarass and discredit Aquino so that any planned prosecution of Gloria and company falls by the wayside?
Hmmm…
Games played in this ongoing reality show:
Authorities are playing the buck-passing, finger-pointing and blaming games.
The public is being amused by a very confusing game.
Will we be playing a crying game?
I like Robredo but I go with Anna’s logic that he has to resign. It’s up to Noynoy kung tanggapin o hindi. If JR won’t do it, OK din lang sa akin but for Gloria’s incompetents to stay… no no no!
Pnoy elite daw will create an “elite force”. Di ba nag-create na tayo niyan. But the force was not utilized in the hostage rescue. Ano ba yan. Panibagong gastos, training atbp.
Tongue, si Santiago kaya ang “mole” dito?
Perhaps, President Aquino should emulate this Russian football coach…
http://manilabaywatch.blogspot.com/2010/08/pres-aquino-could-certainly-emulate.html
Mas may ‘karanasan’sila doon. Tuta! lol 😛
This incident should wake up P Noy to his choice of cabinet members and people to help him the government.
Naawa na ako sa kanya but we have to admit, his performance in this crisis does not inspire confidence (I’m being kind). We are trying to piece together what was happening in Malacañang at the time of the crisis and it’s really worrisome.
And his bad choice of members of his cabinet were major, major factors in last Monday’s debacle and the continuing diplomatic crisis with China.
It’s not only DFA’s Romulo. He has an undersecretary for peace and order in DILG. Rico Puno. What was Puno doing? He was supposed to be in charge of the PNP.
Sana naman he has learned his lesson.
Henry, so far, following the events that transpired up to present I didn’t heard or read that some people are asking PNoy for his resignation (at least not here in P.I.). As I understood it, most are clamoring that heads should roll and PNoy isn’t one of them. In fact, most were asking PNoy to fire those people who bungled on their jobs no matter who gets “hurt”. Be it his allies who supported him in the last elections or not.
This is the time that we need our president the most and need to support him. But having said that, it doesn’t mean that we have to stop commenting, blogging, even critisizing about things we feel is not right with his policies, etc..
Ellen, Rico Puno the singer?
Edd,trabaho ko to find out the truth which we convey to the public to help them make informed decisions. Kapag totoo, everything falls into place. Kapag nagsisinungaling makikita mo ang gaps and lapses.
We are talking here of Donald’s Tsang call which P-Noy said he was not informed by his staff.
My story that the aide who got the call didn’t know who Tsang came from a Malacañang official. Klaro ang pagkasabi sa akin. Hindi ko version yun. Sa kanila galing yan.
The next day, medyo revised na ang kwento sa official version.
I don’t know where PDI or other newspapers got their story, which came later.
Still up to now, from published reports there are still gaps. I have talked to a few more people in pursuit of what is true and things are getting clearer as to what really happened. And nakaka-iyak ang katangahan.
I’ll write about it more lengthily later.
Rico E. Puno, not Rico J. Puno.
Rico E. Puno is P-Noy’s very good friend. They are both fond of guns and practice shooting (is this the right term?) is their hobby. Puno’s business is gun importation. He is close with many officials of the PNP.
P-Noy appointed him DILG secretary for peace and order. He is supposed to be in charge of the PNP.
I know where he was?

Presidente ka man o janitor. Par for the course ika nga.

Second that.
unending nga ang confusion na ito…kaya gaya ni observer who is now in rest…and hopefully in peace..can we move forwad and abangan na lang ang susunod na kabana…kung ano ang gagawin ngayon ni PNoy..
Ellen on the last line of your post #116, you posted the following:
“Nobody in Malacanang knew where Noynoy was during the crisis.”
That’s why on #117, I posted “I know where Noynoy was?”
May I ask, why did you delete it?
As you stated before, your source of info is directly from Malacanang, an A1 source.
Based on the last line that you deleted, that means Noynoy was not in a meeting as stated by Carandang and he told Tsang on his video address to his nation,“….could not return my call(Tsang’s call) because he(Noynoy) was totally engaged in supervising the operation.”
That means the meeting never occurred and never supervised the operation in any way, shape, or form.
Tsang’s video address to his nation
http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/nation/08/27/10/hong-kong-chief-says-aquino-has-apologized
it seems to be malacanang’s fault. it seems the aide who got the 1st call told tsang’s aide that the dfa will instead call them while the same aide (or someone else from malacanang) told the dfa that tsang’s office will call the dfa. so both tsang’s office and the dfa might have been waiting for the call.
perhaps the same thing happened to the 2nd call.
and now the gov’t can’t get their stories straight.
and so the bungling continues …
The kid who is seriously injured and is now confirmed at a Hong Kong hospital, was apparently hit by a blunt object. I sure hope this blunt object is the Axe that went awry. Anyways, these people, in my honest opinion should either be Fired or must tender their resignation. I would urge them to do the right thing and give PNoy some breathing space.
Sec. Tito Bert ROMULO ; Ed Malaya, Ricky Carandang, Sonny Coloma, Julia Abad (strong feeling she took Donald’s call), MPD – Magtibay (did so) Santiago (SWAT fiasco), DILG Robredo (I like you but you have to tender resignation) give PNoy option to accept or decline.
PNoy could have been asleep, which is not an excuse, but his inner circle a.k.a. cordon sanitaire, should be on their respective right frames of mind, to wake him up.
From my perspective, if ERAP has Midnight Cabinet of poker players and drinkers, GMA has Midnight cabinet of Drinkers and Corruptors, Plunderers and Philanderers, PNoy has Midnight cabinet of Vices _ Yosi Cabinet, Billiard Cabinet, Klasmeyt Cabinet, Practical Shooting Cabinet.
I could tell you, it is hard to be living in Hong Kong as a Filipino. What Filipinos in Hong Kong do is to apologize and explain, but from people in the streets of Hong Kong, they only have simple requests should have been done. Huwag na Paligoy-ligoy pa. Be straightforward with the facts. Apologize, Promise to do a fair and speedy investigation. I would also hope that they (PNP) could have extended for HKG forensic team to observe the Forensic investion of the bus. Merely as a matter of courtesy and transparency. Just to show that no cover up is being set.

X-man, there are many gaps in the info that I am getting from official themselves. I’m trying to put them together. Medyo mahirap because at this stage, takipan at hulugan na.
While we were trying to be clarified what really happened in that embarrassing incident, DFA Spokesman Ed Malaya declined to comment even as Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said that he called him up “three times but could not reach him.”
Last Friday, Malaya called me up to related his own recollection of events which I would not detail here for lack of space.
But this is what he can say about the Lacierda’s call that he was not able to take.”At round 9 p.m. called to convey the President’s guidance for the Secretary of Foreign Affairs to call by telephone the Hong Kong Chief Executive.
“I promptly relayed the message to the Secretary,” Malaya said, who was already at home. The instruction was for the Secretary to call Tsang, and not to arrange a call between the President and Tsang.
Malaya said he learned shortly thereafter that Romulo was able to talk to the Chinese Foreign Minister and then to the Hong Kong Chief Executive, and the Secretary promptly reported to the President by phone his talks with the two foreign officials.
Malaya said that he might have missed subsequent calls from Lacierda as he, together with other DFA officials, were busy attending to the Secretary and assisting him over the phone. He was also entertaining calls from members of the media.
He said, “A few things become apparent: one, these series of telephone calls occurred after the gruesome shootings had taken place; and two, the Lacierda-Malaya interactions were not part of the frantic calls made by Hong Kong officials that came in late afternoon through other channels, when the hostage crisis was still at a stand-off.”
“He was also entertaining calls from members of the media.”
There is a time for everything. In time of crisis ay dapat nakatutok ang mga communications line sa pagresolba ng problema. Pwede naman magbigay ng briefing at news update ang mga authorities sa media about the progress of the situation. And the actions of the media should not hinder the success of the operation. The media can record or document the events of the actual happenning but they should be discerning kung ano lang MUNA ang dapat ilabas sa ere in reaL time na hindi makakasama sa outcome ng situation.
Thanks for the update, Ellen.
