Hostage taking crisis is turning for the worse after relatives of the hostage taker were bodily arrested by the police.
The bus driver was able to escape from the bus. He was shouting “Patay na lahat”.
Police is now trying to break into the bus with mazo. It seem the hostage taker is alive.
8:43, ABS-CBN said hostage taker Capt Mendoza was killed in a police assault.
NCR PNP Chief Leocadio Santiago said the hostage taker’s relatives were not arrested. They were just isolated.
The arrest by the way sparked the shooting in the bus.
From Tongue-Twisted:
While waiting for Ellen’s post on the current hostage situation, I am reminded of a similar incident which happened 3 years ago, in almost the very same vicinity. The case was the hostage-taking by a failed politician-cum-philanthropist, Ducat, that looked very much “staged” by characters from the then administration senatorial slate Team Unity (TU).
Refresh your memories here: http://www.ellentordesillas.com/?p=1036
Seeing how the police manhandled the relatives of Capt. Mendoza, the hostage taker, I’m reminded of the case of Ted Failon when his wife committed suicide and he was a suspect.
His relatives were bodily taken out of the hospital from the bedside of his dying wife.
I’m more afraid of the police now.
We are live on CNN, BBC and AlJazeera. Nakakahiya.
Stand by mode ako…..
Just goes to show that the “authorities” are oh so incompetent in handling ANY emergency situation, whether floods or hostage taking such as this…sigh…
8:43 pm. ABS-CBN announced hostage taker killed in police assault.
There are alive hostages!
At least two of the hostages were killed.
Nag-pause lang ako, patay na!
Killed in assault or killed himself?
I am watching it live now. The hostage drama is now over. Nung ending lang yata nag-cordoned-off.
NCR PNP Chief Leocadio Santiago said “the relatives (of Capt Mendoza) were not arrested. They were just isolated.”
The arrest of the relatives triggered the shooting.
the police should have asked the driver who was able to escape how to open the doors from outside. it was pathetic seeing them unsuccessfully smashing the doors, windshield, and windows with a sledgehammer. shouldn’t they have equipped themselves with gas masks after releasing those tear gas canisters inside the bus?
with a 12 hours window from the start to the conclusion of the crisis, there should have been enough time to call in the Emergency Task Force or the Swat team if there is such team especially trained to deal with this kind of situation… this will be a team of very well-trained special unit that can deal in an emergency including negotiation, with sharpshooters and commando skilled cops that can break in and neutralize the hostage takers or take them out while making sure to protect the lives of innocent parties.
and only the best and the fittest of the force can qualify.
in my younger days, i was privileged to watch these men (during the old days only men joined the team) trained in the same range where i practiced and also gathered their casings for our own reloads and they practiced extensively in all kinds of weapons until they can shoot them to perfection. they were young and in very good physical fit and during their years of service were able to accomplish their missions with i believe with very rare use of their weapons. a very exclusive team, not too expensive to train an maintain and can save many innocent lives.
This incident should bring to the attention of P-Nyoy’s administration the importance to SECURITY, PEACE & ORDER. Kailngan itong top priority.
Relatives not arrested, only isolated. Why PNP was playing the hostage situation by getting in the psyche of Mendoza without anticipation of his actions? Wala bang professional hostage negotiator ang PNP? At hindi pa rin sila equipped technically. Hala, e di mental and technical capability nada ang PNP? Bigyan ng budget, huwag kokorapin ha!
Noynoy is a gun-addict. Maybe he will raise VAT by one-tenth-Percent so there will be more money to fund Pilipinas police negotiations and SWAT teams.
“…this will be a team of very well-trained special unit that can deal in an emergency including negotiation, with sharpshooters and commando skilled cops”-vic
Kaya nga sabi ko importante yung communication gadget for planning and executing the strategies. Decision na lang nung head of the police-negotiating team. Dumating yung SWAT Team pero di ko alam kung gaano sila trained on situations like this.
Text from my friend Bea:
“Have been watching. The police should not have provoked the hostage taker by arresting the family. He (Mendoza) saw this on the bus TV. He said, “Do not arrest my family.”
That’s what triggered his violent reaction. The police always fouls up things.
Text from my friend,Ace:
After the comical management of the tragic hostage-taking, after all the show off during hte drills, I may worry about national shame and negative effect to tourism.
I am more concerned with how our Miss Universe candidate would answer if asked about the competence of our police tomorrow.
Two hours have passed since the end of the hostage crisis, why is there no word from the President?
Media should also be blamed for airing the arrest of the brother, LIVE on TV.
BBC was asking/ wondering why media were allowed to broadcast live the hostage drama that just ended.
Travel advisory from HK:
http://www.sb.gov.hk/eng/ota/index.htm
This is what I do not understand. He — Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza was angry at the Office/Ombudsman or the PNP. So why didn’t he bring his Armalite to them?
Why shoot the Chinese tourists?
led on hijacked Philippine tourist bus (AP)
AP – A 12-hour hostage stand-off on a hijacked Philippine bus ended in bloodshed Monday, with officials saying at least seven Chinese tourists were dead along with the disgruntled ex-policeman who seized their vehicle in a bid to get his job back.
Tito Noy, wer r u na! Labas ka na……! Pinas needs ur comforting words….
Also, where is Manila Mayor Fred Lim? It’s Vice Mayor Ishko Moreno talking to the media.
Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said President Aquino is preparing to deliver a statement on the hostage crisis. he said the president was still consulting with police authorities.
PresiNoynoy fired the PAGASA chief for failure — typhoon-prediction. Tingnan natin what he says about Pilipinas Police.
PNoy is now on TV. Boy, he is talking nonsense. Duh????
Pati yung ABS CBS News Bandila, they have to cut it short yung press con ni PNoy. 😛
I was depending on you pa naman, Mike. 🙂
ABS CBN news
Hehehe 😛
Luzminda @m19..when the sharpshooter or sharpshooters in position for their kill, the decision to fire or not to fire is theirs and theirs alone…they are trained to make that decision and they will live on that decision…
I have this very “live” experience we seen how this unfolded before the country eyes some few years ago…The estranged husband shot his wife in downtown office and was making a getaway and took a lady hostage in the city main railway station, pointing a sawed-off 22 rifle in her head. negotiotion went for hours without any progress and one “false” move from the man a loud report was heard and the incident was concluded…it was later found out that the man rifle was jammed and may have been trying to clear it. and the sniper had to make his own decision, the life of the innocent hostage of the hostage taker…the choice was easy…and it was in national tv.
Former police officer Jimmy Santiago now a judge comes to mind.
I was impressed with Vice Mayor Isko Moreno, especially that very long interview with CNN. For someone long considered by opponents who are lawyers and other professionals as a mediocre local executive who banked on mere good looks and popularity to win elections, he’s gone a long way. He spoke near-perfect English even way better than the NCRPO chief also in CNN, a far cry from his Germspesyal days. I heard he was studying law. He was in the action right from the start and even managed a few hostages releases in the early hours up to the time the Ombudsman letter was delivered.
Meanwhile, Mayor Lim the ex-cop, was nowhere in sight.
Like Mike, #41 above, I also miss Jimmy Santiago who had experience in 20 such hostage negotiations, 6 of them ending with Santiago burying hot lead in between the hostage-takers’ eyes.
Wow! Daming expert dito! I was watching the whole drama on TV. It didn’t help that media was all over the place braoadcasting to the whole world what was goin on. Fine with me. But the coverage on the policeman brother was ill-advised. The cops have every right to remove him, hell, arrest him ! He was interfering with the negotiations! He agitated his brother on the celphone not to accept the Ombudsman’s letter and that started the fracas. They could have let the cops do their thing first and interview him later. He would not have been harmed bcoz the media knew he was being taken into police custody. What did u expect? Mayhem!
In my opinion, the police acquitted themselves very well, despite the obvious lack of of the needed equipment. Naging comedy tuloy yung assault nila. I would surmise, Mendoza shot only at those who tried to wrestle with the hostage-taker otherwise, he would have sprayed them all with bullets from his M16. The lack of the proper equipment, boy the windshield was really tough(made in Japan? 😛 ), proved the inadequacy of our police to respond to such situations. The media was clueless on the importance ok keeping such information from the hostage-taker. They just blah-blah-blahed their way and blamed the police for the fiasco. But did they ever conscientiously do their duty to at least not broadcast sensitive aspects of the event that triggered the killings. That cop was ready to fight it out as evidenced by the number of magazines and the other firearms he had with him. That SPO2 bother of him should be thrown the book! Sobrang paawa epek pa! Handa na raw siyang mamatay! Tarantado! And media coverage was a circus! Im sorry Mam Ellen pero some members of the media were as guilty as those whom they accused of incompetence!
Agree with Henry with regards to media coverage. Naging circus. 🙂
Mike:
The resignation of the Director, Manila Police should be demanded. As the ground/on-scene commander, command responsibility stops with him as a star rank officer. Doon pa lang sa crowd control, to include the media, bagsak na si Magtibay( PMA Class 78). It was in this aspect of the police operations that the police failed miserably and the one that proved disastrous. Guilty members of the media should be ashamed of themselves. Let this be a lesson to all!(Again?) Whenever u have a hostage-taker who is armed to the teeth, expect the worst! He could have resolved to himself already that he would take as many victims with him if things would not end well. It didn’t. And innocent victims are dead. Think of that for a second. Tsk.
Agree din ako kay Henry regarding windshield. Anak ng… ang tibay!!! 😛
Class ’78 na naman? nagkakalat pa rin?
HK disappointed:
http://globalnation.inquirer.net/news/breakingnews/view/20100823-288444/Hong-Kong-govt-disappointed-about-RP-hostage-siege
Henry, wala ba tayong mga sights na nakikita yung heat signatures para ma observe nila kung anong nangyayari sa dun sa loob ng bus or yung pinapasok nilang fibre optics mechanism para makita ang loob ng bus na yun? just like in the movies?
bakit wlang flashbangs? yung nakikita natin sa swat coverages on tv (US)?
Jug:
Di mo magagamit lahat yun doon. Maraming hostages sa loob ng bus. The assault team was at a disadvantage. All their moves were being telegraphed by media na namomonitor naman ni Mendo. The assault was stymied without this. It was just damn so frustrating watching the whole thing on tv. Daming nagmamarunong! Well, they got what they wanted! Anak ng pating!
And mind you, Mendoza picked the perfect place for the hostage-taking scenario with matching foreign tourists to boot. It ensured full media coverage. It was deliberate as it was well-planned. Advantage of the terrain na kaagad sa kanya. A shoot-out is never advisable in such a case. Assault should be the last resort if the hostages are harmed. The unfortunate result bore this out. Tragic indeed.
Pwede kaya yun? 🙂
Question is, are they (police) aware that the hostage taker is monitoring everything on TV? If so, sana they should have thought of disabling it or jamming the signal.
Mike:
There ought to be a law that would restrict media from covering during emergency situations. I remembered during the coups of Gringo et. al. where media was asked not to report on gov’t positions. Also, during the EDSA TRES incident, the gov’t of Gloria asked INC Net 25 to stop covering the protest of Erap’s loyalist.
Ito ang nagustuhan ko sa sagot ni P’Noy when asked to react on media coverage of the hostage taking incident:
“One would hope you have your self-policing mechanisms. In other countries, pwede pakiusapan ang media”
The Police itself could have blocked the Media Broadcast of the events by cordoning the area and it has all the authority to do so as it involves the safety of innocent lives. for goodness sake, the whole world press was able to honour the “blackout” request of the kidnapping of the CBC reporter in Afghanistan until she was “rescued” or her release was worked out. and not a single member of the Media whine or complaint if the Police block them from accessing the area under Police activities and instead wait for the Police Releases…it is about time for the Media to start co-operating and fully responsible and help make up for the shortcomings of the Police Authorities.
RE: …The unfortunate result bore this out. Tragic indeed.~ Henry90
bloods of many lives are in MERCEDITAS GUTIERREZ’S hand, the main cause of this tragedy was the unequal application of law or double standard of justice, the hostage taker couldn’t endure the fact that corrupt big fishes and criminals in gov’t are treated with kid’s globe and were enjoying their loots while force of law was applied against him, hostage taker got angry after reading letter from MERCEDITAS GUTIERREZ….
#44 henry : “But the coverage on the policeman brother was ill-advised. The cops have every right to remove him, hell, arrest him ! He was interfering with the negotiations! He agitated his brother on the celphone not to accept the Ombudsman’s letter and that started the fracas. ”
i agree with you henry, that’s putting things in proper perspective, the root cause of this is the rotten justice system and crooked ombudsman gutierrez
SWAT: Special Weapons and Tactics
Where were the weapons and the tactics?
One police officer candidly admitted on air that the SWAT unit don’t even have gas masks in their inventory. No assault rifles either for close combat and blitz attacks.
And speaking of raids/blitz attack, shouldn’t there be an element of surprise? They were around the bus for at least 30 minutes without anything much happening except masohin isa-isa yung mga bintana which Mendoza could monitor. I won’t be surprised kung may nahampas na ulo ng pasahero doon.
And crowd control. Ambulances had to weave through a thick crowd of uzis. Do you really need 80 policemen to surround the bus?
Do you wonder why our police become the object of ridicule and don’t get much sympathy? Kasi they are known for pushing their weight around – tatapang nila pag unarmed civilians o ordinaryong motorista ang katapat nila, pero pag kargado na ang kalaban e lumalabas na ang pagka patola nila. Puro porma! May nabalitaan na ba tayong pulis na nag-responde DURING a bank heist?
The media is another story. They will report anything basta maka-scoop lang but i won’t dwell on that for now. Many will agree that in yesterday’s unfortunate event, BOTH media and the police screwed up big time. I hope both learned from yesterday’s experience, but I highly doubt it. This won’t be the last time it will happen.
Like Cap. The wickedness you have done today can not be covered up by the goodness you have done yesterday.
Who’s’ who?!?
If there is irresponsible parenting next to that is irresponsible broadcasting?
Is it really necessary to aired live a very sensitive situation? Like hostage taking?
Yeah we saw how our officers reacted and it’s really!?!?
But at least communication and listening should be there with respect and most… using brain with heart.
Where was that? Many died and hurt.
You heard a broadcaster saying this and that detailing the situation and the exact location of the officers as well as them!?! Live! It’s really funny yet sacks… stupid.
Because all they want is to be on top they already forgot a lot of things, being human.
Television as an industry, an art form or a medium of communications. An entertainment, for us to learn not to be just and irresponsible.or some people, watching is part of everyday life, to feel relaxed or just be aware.
SWAT: Special Weapons and Tactics? no triggerman its actually SWAT: Sorry Wala Akong Training. The truth really was; these people who handled down the situation were not capable enough & amateur to their task. The lost of lives happened just like that, so sad.
RE: SWAT: Sorry Wala Akong Training.~DAN
“… some members of the media were as guilty as those whom they accused of incompetence!”-Henry90
I agree!
