CHR exec goes ballistic over media

Human Rights Commissioner Cecilia Quisumbing yesterday scolded a radio reporter for refusing to go into the bathroom with her, the only place, she said, where she could grant him the interview he had requested.
DzMM reporter Dennis Datu became the target of Quisumbing’s wrath when he did not comply with her instruction to go inside the bathroom so she could update him on the torture case the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) was investigating.
In a subsequent briefing, Quisumbing, herself a former broadcaster, scolded other members of the media as she tried to organize a press conference, prompting radio reporters to leave the room, according to Inquirer radio reporter Glen Juego, who attended the press conference.
The incident with Datu occurred in the morning when he had sought out the commissioner for a live interview with dzMM anchor Ted Failon.
Quisumbing, who said she was very busy, told Datu she could only do the interview inside the bathroom while she was putting on makeup. When the radio reporter did not follow her inside, she got mad.
“Dinuro ako (She scolded me),” was how Datu described the incident to fellow reporters.
According to Juego, Datu was very upset at how Quisumbing berated him.
Datu, Juego added, did not realize that Quisumbing had instructed him to follow her inside the bathroom.
Quisumbing said she was very busy handling the police and the witnesses in the torture incident and had wanted to multi-task by putting on her makeup and giving an interview.
Quisumbing also lamented that her tiff with Datu was aired in the media, saying it was sad that a journalist would use airtime for personal grief.
Juego said Quisumbing apparently got irked at other members of the media who also wanted to interview her in the conference room.
He said she snapped at a cameraman who asked her to look into the camera.
“Why are you telling me what to do? You should be the one to adjust,” Juego recalled Quisumbing as saying.
She told off a TV reporter for sitting in a chair that was reserved for commissioners. She also called the attention of another TV reporter for supposedly giving her dagger looks, Juego said.
Quisumbing said she was trying to keep order in the press briefing, which was why she was issuing instructions to the media.
“The least you can do is listen to me when I’m trying to arrange you,” she said.
Coco Quisumbing does not have a nice reputation in the diplomatic community. As in “not nice.”

I think Etta has not yet formally assumed the position although P-Noy has already announced her appointment. Coco is CHR officer-in-charge.

This incident would be a good topic ni Ted at Pinky on Monday. “Comm.” Etta was just interviewed by Ted sa DZMM, Thursday if I am not mistaken. Her appointment papers not yet signed, but PNoy himself made the announcement.

Who in his right mind would go anywhere alone with this woman? The bathroom of all places? A guy could get raped, accused of rape/harrassment, harrassed to give in, or even if you didn’t do anything – the chismis that follows getting caught with this woman in the bathroom would be humiliating…

We need somebody with that kind of demeanor in the CHR. How will you go against the military, police MoroLF or the npa if you are onion skinned? These groups will just take you for granted. NO FEAR!

in fairness to coco quisumbing she was able to rescue and protect the human rights of the torture victim’s wife from the police, and she was the first one who expressed outrage against the erring policemen. nevertheless, patience and understanding between Coco quisumbing and the press would have been practiced. News report focused on the incident with press by Quisumbing, instead of the main issue which was about human rights of torture victim and his wife, Coco Quisumbing is a good choice for CHR chair
