For his innovative “Kariton Klasrum” (pushcart classroom) Filipino educator Efren Peñalforida has been awarded by CNN as “2009 Hero of the Year.”
Peñaflorida was awarded during the CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. He received his award from American actress Eva Mendes.
He bested nine other nominees from different countries for the Hero of the Year award. The nominees were initially selected by a panel of 14 “Blue Panel” luminaries but the Hero of the Year award is given to the one with the most number of online votes in the CNN Heroes website.

Peñaflorida would be the first Filipino to become a nominee of the annual CNN Heroes awards and the first to Filipino to win the top prize.
The project, already in its third year, is a a tribute by the international news organization to selfless humanitarian acts of individuals from different countries.
In his acceptance speech, quoted by CNN, Peñaflorida said: “Our planet is filled with heroes, young and old, rich and poor, man, woman of different colors, shapes and sizes. We are one great tapestry. Each person has a hidden hero within, you just have to look inside you and search it in your heart, and be the hero to the next one in need.”
“So to each and every person inside in this theater and for those who are watching at home, the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed. Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell to my co-volunteers at Dynamic Teen Company 8586 Inc., you are the change that you dream as I am the change that I dream and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be.Mabuhay!”
Peñaflorida will receive $100,000. This will be used to fund his work in the Dynamic Teen Company, a volunteer organization that he put up to conduct his “Kariton Klasrum” program.
Peñaflorida’s program conducts weekly visits to poor and underserved areas in Cavite, north of Luzon, to teach young people basic lessons in Mathematics, English, and Science using only a specially designed pushcart.
In a previous interview, Peñaflorida said he will continue holding weekly lessons and hopes that it will encourage other people to lend time to help others in need.

Congratulations Efren! You are one hero worth emulating. Keep up the good work and don’t let those politicians use your good name for their own selfish agenda. If they tried to invite you, please do not accept, just say NO. And tell them to make their own kariton and push it over a cliff with them inside.

I watched the video over and over. It is really a heartwarming moment and Efren deserves the honor. His speech is very simple yet very powerful. More importantly, his delivery is punctuated with humility and selflessness.

The difference between Manny and Efren:
Boxing is Manny’s livelihood, He seeks fame and fortune and glory (Gloria?) through his boxing prowess. His winnings he bought himself beautiful mansions, jewelries, luxury cars and Krista.
Efren did it for the poor children so that they may have a better life for the future. Efren doesn’t gain any wealth. In fact the US$ 100k plus the US$ 25k he got earlier will be use as fund for the Dynamic Teen Company to further help those that are in need.
So who is the real hero, Manny or Efren? I’m not belittling Manny for he also gave us honor, but to say he is a hero is for me, way too much.
CNN Heroes is based on the criteria of accomplishment, impact and personal motivation for their service to others. Efren did it to serve others.

I agree with Mike. Hindi ko minamaliit ang nagawa ni Manny pero yun ang trabaho nya para kumita. Si Efren, trabaho nya teacher at sa labas ng oras ng pagtuturo, nagtutulak ng kariton para magturo uli.
Manny did it for money and fame. Efren did not.
Manny is full of himself. Efren is full of humility.

The write on Efren Penaflorida’s accomplishments and humility makes him a good candidate for the presidency. It’s too bad he is not yet of age to qualify for the position.
Sa aking sariling kuro-kuro, huwag natin silipin si Manny at si Efren sa iisang butas ng karayom. But we see them at the same light. They both brought honor for the Philippines albeit contrasting tapestries. One in sport and one in education. Forget for a moment that Manny gets paid for it. Naghahanap-buhay lang iyong tao.
Nobody paid any attention to Manny until his pugilistic conquests rejuvinated pride in the Filipino.
And like Manny, Efren was likewise initially invisible until his selfless outreach to bring the classroom to the needy Pinoy made the world aware of his noble advocacy. Two contrasting endeavors that carried the national colors to its lofty pedestal. Whether we regard them as heroes or not doesn’t really matter. What is important is that we now take greater pride in being Pinoys. And two simple everyday Pinoy mad it all possible. No thanks to any politico.
Teodoro vowed: “We will address the four faces of poverty: poverty of the mind, poverty of the pocket, poverty of the environment, and poverty of relationship.”
Gibo forgot one more poverty he must address,…the poverty of education. I suggest he takes a masteral course on the subject under the guidance of no less than EFREN PENAFLORIDA.
Tangna, daming comments kaagad ng manalo. At Cocoy’s Delight when he posted Efren’s need for votes; there were 12 conments but all 12 were off topic at di man lang pinagusapan. In Cocoy’s Politically Incorrect Blog; only four of us supported Efren to win – Joeseg, Chi, Cocoy and myself despite the many who proclaim to be members.

sorry…but not a second did i consider pakyaw a hero….he mught be a pound for pound flesh n blood, but whatever the outcome, everything is his and his alone, for his own choice and for his own satisfaction….never did he thought from the start na magpapaumbag sya para sa kapwa…Efren on the other hand, started his advocacy to give those seemless hopeless sector of our society a light of hope….and this is the truest essence of a HERO….

So kung gusto nating baguhin ang country natin, mag-i-start iyon sa puso natin. And then collectively, iyong pagbabago na iyon ay talagang magiging malaki,” he said.
And now that he is the recipient of the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year award, more poor and uneducated Filipino children will benefit from his award.
“Iyong 90% cash grant mapupunta sa Dynamic Teen Company. Iyong 10% sa church…. Nothing for me,” he said.
He said he was there as a representative of the children and the volunteers he works with.
“Nandito po ako para i-represent ang mga bata, iyong mga dedicated volunteers, iyong mentor ko, iyong selfless and hardworking Filipinos,” said Peñaflorida.
Peñaflorida may be a star to many, but for the 2009 CNN Hero of the Year, the real heroes are the volunteers.

Sigurado ako, kapag ni-recognize ang hindi mabilang na diplomang nakasabit sa mga dingding ng mansiyon mo, puwera pa ‘yung mga nakatago sa baul, nand’yan kaagad si goyang at sasabihing dapat kang tularan (pati na siya) sapagkat binigyan mo ng halaga ang value of getting the highest education, katulad din niya na meron ng minaster meron pang dinoctor na degree.
Hay, kawawang presidente (daw siya, eh nang-agaw lang naman at nandaya kaya hanggang ngayon ay nasa bahay na bato pa, bukod sa binili pa ang kanyang mga pagka-absuwelto sa impitsment), lahat na lamang ng taong sumikat ay pilit na sinasakyan ang karangalang natamo.
Anyway, up or down, left or right, nakakatuwa nga ang pagkapanalo ng ating kababayan. Biruin nga naman, with his meager resources maybe part of which is his earnings from his job, he can reach as many out of school children as he can together with his group to share his knowledge and teach the street children the value of education though in an informal way compared to the honorables who call themselves public servants but pocketing the funds intended for the welfare of our youth?
At one point, I believe we are just wasting our time blogging as a way of shouting our disgust over the abuses of those in power, but I think magiging dalahin din natin kung ipipikit na lamang natin ang ating mga eyes and not do something while these abusive government officials continue looting and get away with their crimes.
Mas lalong ipagwawalang care din ng mga opisyales na ito ang welfare ng ating neglected part of the society if all of us will shoulder their supposed to be responsibilities just to prove our heroes inside us.

Efren will not be a bastos kapag inimbitahan siya sa Malakanyang upang igawad sa kanya ang Lakandula Award ng mismong pinagpwepwetagang panggulo ng Pilipinas dahil hindi kalebel ng kanyang marangal na pagkatao ang bulok ng dangal ng mga hunyangong nangagsusumiksik sa lahat ng sulok ng pinagkakatakutang bahay na bato sa gilid ng maitim at mabahong ilog.

Reminds me of St. John Bosco. When he was a kid, he would gather the boys in his neighborhood, show them some magic tricks, do acrobatic stunts and did boxing/sparring with them so that they keep out of vices. He ended the day reading them verses from the Bible. Today, the Salesians of Don Bosco is the biggest religious congregation with the most number of priests.
Efren used books in his kariton to teach kids basic education, to keep them out of street gangs. Whether these kids continued on to study later in school or kept off the gangs, the important first step had been achieved – that the value of education must be instilled in every child’s mind and heart. What government does after Efren’s work is a more important aspect of the development of our citizens.
Sadly, this is were efforts of heroes like Efren are more often put to waste.
