The infighting in the Liberal Party which had caused the departure of one of its senatorial candidates, Sergio Osmeña III , stems from hype that the presidential bid of Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III is a battle of “good versus evil.”
Aquino was thrust into the presidential contest after the death of his mother, Cory, which saw a massive outpouring of grief for the most admired housewife –turned –president who inspired the nation to oust a well-entrenched dictator.
The nation’s grief over Cory’s passing was also seen by many as a yearning for decency in government because she had led protests against Gloria Arroyo’s corruption-riddled government.
Since Aquino’s s entry into the presidential race last September, which was made possible by the sliding down of Sen. Mar Roxas, the original LP presidential bet, he has been enjoying remarkable ratings: 44 per cent in Pulse Asia and 60 percent in Social Weather Station.
Aquino’s presidential bid has gained support from the youth and private groups whose members have expressed disdain for traditional politics of money and patronage and desire for “new politics” based on merit and integrity.
Aquino’s formidable lead in surveys has created a bandwagon that even traditional politicians want to join. Lakas-Kampi assets Batangas Governor Vilma Santos and her husband, Ralph Recto, former senator and Gloria Arroyo’s economic planning secretary until two months ago, were inducted into the LP last week.
Recto, who lost in his 2007 re-election bid, is now included in the LP senatorial ticket.
Explaining his decision of leaving the LP, Osmeña said he’d rather go it alone rather than be in the same ticket as Recto who, he said, “ does not fit the image what the party wants to project to the nation to show our goodwill … about new politics and decency in government.”
“ I would have a very big problem with any such candidate joining the slate,” Osmeña, who managed the presidential bid of Sen. Chiz Escudero before Aquino entered the presidential race.
Osmeña’s wife, Bettina, is a Lopez. The Lopezes , who own ABS-CBN, are close friends of the Aquinos.
Osmeña cited the Expanded Value Added Tax, which was the brainchild of Recto, as one of the sore points with the former Arroyo cabinet member. Roxas had also strongly opposed the E-Vat and many are wondering how the party would reconcile the candidates’ conflicting positions on that issue. Aquino, however, defended Recto saying the latter has an exemplary record in the Senate.
A source said when Osmeña raised the Recto issue with Drilon, the latter snapped at him, “If you have complaints, you are free to leave.” That’s what Osmeña did.
A LP insider said they are overwhelmed by everybody wanting to join them which should address their inadequacy of a nationwide machinery.
Yesterday, Arroyo loyalists Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte and his vice mayor, Herbert Bautista, defected to the LP. Also Caloocan Mayor Enrico Echieverri.
The other day, Roxas swore in Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, one of the original members of Lakas-Kampi, with a big number of local officials. Del Rosario is brother-in-law of businessman Antonio Floreindo, a crony of the late President Ferdinand Marcos . political arch enemy of Noynoy’s father, the late Benigno Aquino, Jr.
If not for the opposition of two LP senatorial candidates, Bukidnon Governor Jose Zubiri, father of Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, would have also joined the LP.
An LP source said former Bukidnon Rep. (1st district) Neric Acosta and Bukidnon Rep. (2nd district) TG Guingona III vehemently protested the defection of the older Zubiri, which was being entertained by some LP leaders.
There is a long history of Acosta-Zubiri rivalry for the first district of Bukidnon. In 2007, Zubiri’s protégé, Candido Pancrudo, Jr. won the congressional seat in the first district by a very slim margin over Acosta’s sister Malou. Acosta has a pending protest against Pancrudo’s election.
LP sources said the Zubiri promised to deliver Bukidnon’s about 600,000 votes to Noynoy and Mar “in a silver platter.”
Acosta said, “Is that our only criteria? What if Garci promised to deliver the votes in a silver platter, should we also take him in? What if convicted rapist Romy Jalosjos promised to deliver the votes of Zamboanga del Norte or Jocjoc Bolante promised to deliver the votes of Capiz, should we also take them in?”
Acosta said instead of being lured to compete the traditional way, he reminded his party mates to harness the power of the 60 per cent of the people who are putting their trust on Aquino to carry out political change.
Acosta said it was a good thing that Aquino put his foot down in the case of Bukidnon.
Butch Abad, Aquino’s campaign manager, admitted in a radio interview that there is a conflict within the party between those who believe that Noynoy has the obligation to his supporters to pursue “new” or reform politics and those who are being pragmatic and want to utilize the machinery of traditional politicians to secure the votes for Aquino and Roxas.
“It’s a delicate, difficult balancing act every day. Case to case,” Abad said.
One question I would like to ask GMA loyalists-now-Noynoy allies: how would they vote, if they were to decide to make Arroyo accountable for her crimes to the Filipino people?
I like what Osmena said of Recto and why he left LP, “[Recto] does not fit the image what the party wants to project to the nation to show our goodwill … about new politics and decency in government.”
1. The SWS Survey was conducted September 18-21, 2009. Preference for Noynoy was at 60%.
2. The Pulse Asia Survey was conducted October 22-30, 2009. Preference for Noynoy was at 44%.
3. The survey results were taken at different times, therefore this takes on the nature of a time-series.
4. As a time series, the survey results show that while Noynoy maintains a lead at 44% as of October 2009, this preference is lower than the 60% preference in September 2009. That means, a 16% decrease in approval.
“A source said when Osmeña raised the Recto issue with Drilon, the latter snapped at him, “If you have complaints, you are free to leave.””
Ganyan talaga yan, akala mo ay hari always in a “snapping” mood.
Gustong-gusto ko rin ang sinabi ni Serge tungkol kay Recto “not fit the image what the party wants to project to the nation to show our goodwill … about new politics and decency in government.””
“Acosta said it was a good thing that Aquino put his foot down in the case of Bukidnon.”
” Noynoy is not prepared for it (the presidency).”
FRANKLIN DRILON
EQ,
When did he say that?
Anna
When Mar Roxas was deciding whether to give up his bid for the presidency in favor of Noynoy.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.
Thanks EQ. I’ve never liked Drilon, the ultimate in tradpolitics.
The infighting and squabbling within the party will be Noynoy’s litmus test of his capability as a leader. He may be an honest politician but is he the statesman that our country needs remains to be seen.
From Ronald:
Look at the composition of the other parties also. . .parang chop suey din. . .Take NP for example. . . .I am not surprised. . .LP and NP are the two strongest parties in the perception of balimbings from Lakas as of now. . . Tingnan nyo rin ang kay Erap. . . . for as long na mahina ang political party system natin, iyan at iyan pa rin ang makikita natin tuwing eleksyon. .
Pasensiya na, am being just and fair to the wife and husband.
Hindi sila dapat pang pag-ukulan ng pansin after all their self serving loyalty and support to the panduck.
http://www.abante-tonite.com/issue/nov2009/opinions_out.htm
Balimbing at hunyango!
Oblak,
Noynoy tops surveys again, this time in Batangas and Davao City
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/177445/noynoy-tops-surveys-again-this-time-in-batangas-and-davao-city
Kaya parang bata.
It is imperative for Noynoy to show his mettle at this stage of his political journey.
Agree with Ace!
It is imperative for Noynoy to show his mettle at this stage of his political journey.
He doesn’t have to scream or to sound dictatorial — cool lang siya dapat and determined. He will be respected all the more.
He must be the ULTIMATE negotiator, i.e., to achieve win-win solution.
“Kaninang umaga, pag-on ko sa radyo, me ini-interview ni Joe Taruc. Pamilyar ‘yung boses . This is really funny! At times, reality is stranger than fiction.
Thanks Anna!
Another quote to ponder:
“I am more afraid of an army of one hundred sheep led by a lion than an army of one hundred lions led by a sheep.” ~Charles Maurice, Prince de Talleyrand-Périgord
Ace, I never actually liked Talleyrand but he had great intellect and was the ultimate pragmatist.
Ganyan talaga yan, akala mo ay hari always in a “snapping” mood. – Chi
Reminds me of stories that he bullied Violy (RIP) his wife.

But Noynoy can learn a lot from him especially in the art of diplomacy.
Completely agree, Ace. No doubt about it.
She’ll be an asset in any party. Si Ralph ang liability.
You mentioned E-VAT. Somebody reminded me in 2001 when he figures in cheating and eased out Honasan from no. 12. Honasan had to settle for number 13 that will finish the remaining term of Teofista Guingona who was appointed by Arroyo as her vice president.
One of the questions raised against Recto’s votes were from Turtle islands. The number of votes exceeded the registered voters in that island. The joke then was that it was the turtles that voted Recto senator.
There was an article in Newsbreak that dry run for “Hello Garci” was for the making of Recto as senator in 2001. The same operator that manufactured the fake election returns for Gloria Arroyo in 2004 to replace the genuine ERs in the ballot boxes being kept at the Batasan, was the same operator that made Recto senator in 2001.
It’s good that this thing came up. Mahalungkat nga yung stories na yan.
Did you see Caloocan Mayor Echieverri take his oath as LP? Real turnoff. But then he will deliver the votes for Noynoy and Mar.
Produkto rin ni Hello Garci si Recto. Ipagkalat!
I read that it was Ate Vi who insisted on a package deal.
I agree, Ms. Ellen, I saw Echieverri’s oath taking. Kakapigil halakhak. When his arms were raised, he looked like a fat monkey being carried away. The wonder of photoshop worked with Echieverri.
Regarding the topic that Recto’s 2001 win was the dry run for Hello Garci.
As if he suffers from a forever mid-life crisis. (V was a very nice woman, more intelligent than F twice over).
Another angle to consider why Serge does not like Ralph is the fact that he was appointed by Gloria as NEDA chief and like the three monkeys “he sees no evil, hears no evil and speaks no evil”,with regards to the anomalies involving the first couple.
If you will recall, Neri was NEDA chief when the ZTE controversy exploded, now you connect the dots…
Chi,
Yep… I liked V. She was intelligent (if not more intelligent than the hubby).
Chi: I read that it was Ate Vi who insisted on a package deal.
Chi, it’s in my article last Wednesday: The battle over Batangas votes.
Maybe Ralph told Vilma to insist on that.
Press statement of former Sen. Ralph Recto On Serge Osmena’s reported plan to bolt LP:
My service in government is of public record. It is one unstained by any charge of corruption or wrongdoing.
I have always been known to speak out my mind, be it in the floor of the House, committee rooms of the Senate, and inside Malacanang.
I opposed EO 464, CPR, Charter change, the national ID system, ang pagpaslang ng mga akbista, the State of Emergency proclamation, and in NEDA, the onerous provisions of the Laiban dam contract, the ZTE proposal, RFID, SICPA at marami pang iba.
I have never allowed my party affiliation to get in the way of my principles.
I have unfairly borne the blame on a tax measure as if it was an executive decree that I signed but it was a measure pushed by the World Bank, proposed by the Finance department, endorsed by Malacanang, originated in the House, approved by the Senate. This tax measure would not have passed without the support and cooperation of the members of Congress, including contributions made by Sen. Serge Osmeña.
I did not invent VAT; it was introduced to the country when I was still in college in 1988.
My position on taxes in general is that each has an expiry date. A tax for one era might not be needed in the next. From Day One, the next administration should set out the goals of plugging tax leakages, stopping smuggling, promoting honest procurement and curbing corruption so with more money in hand it can schedule the phasing down of tax rates, not only of VAT, but of income and business taxes.
I believe that a Noynoy Aquino administration will create a healthy economy, boost business confidence, and halt corruption, moves that will engender tax obedience among the people who after seeing that the taxes they pay are spent properly will be encouraged to pay the right taxes, thus generating enough revenues that could pave the way for the reduction of tax rates, which is the best dividend the people can get for honest governance.
Possible because Ralph was traumatized still with what happened to him last election.
MAGKA-IBIGAN SILA?! hehehe
Naiintindihan ko si Recto pagdating sa EVAT. Just like the initial VAT, talagang katakot takot na pag laban dito.
Oooops..Henry90, tama ka wala sa ABS-CBN newsmedia, PDI, and other media entities na kontrolado ng civil socialites, Pro-Yellow Fever and Hello Garci media practitioners yong gusto mong mabasa?
Kaya open your eyes Bro?

See…Mr.
Erap wins Subic.
(1)President Erap has edged out Noynoy Aquino and Manny Villar in getting the support of the influential Khonghun group of Subic, Zambales, the biggest town in that Region III province with 60,000 votes. Senior Provincial Board Member Joy Khonghun, Subic Vice Mayor Jun Guevara, Zambales ABC president and SP Member Oyie Pangan, SP Member J. V. Felarca from Castillejo and eight Subic town councilors took their oath Sunday, as PMP members before President Erap at his Polk Street residence in a ceremony witnessed by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada.
(2)LP Mayor Alex Aranas has joined President Erap to be the PMP candidate for Congress in the first district of Oriental Mindoro. Mayor Aranas has the distinction of building a modern P140 million public market from private donations.
(3)In Samar, former Rep. Catalino Figueroa is the PMP candidate for Congress.
(4)Former Rep. Anthony Miranda is running for mayor of Santiago City, Isabela under the PMP banner.
(5)Customs broker Edwin Santos has been chosen by President Erap as his candidate for mayor of Obando, Bulacan.
(6) Retired PNP General Efren Fernandez is the candidate of President Erap for mayor of Kalibo, Aklan.
Pahabol Mr. Henry90…!
In Camarines Norte, Vice Gov. Roy Padilla Jr. is running for governor under Erap with Senen Jerez as vice governor and Pamela Pardo as candidate for congresswoman for the 1st district of Camarines Norte.

I hope that we will have a CLEAN election in 2010. So be it.
Ang sa akin lang, he was already given a chance once, he blew it! Marahil, nandyan pa rin ang maraming suporta sa kanya but I doubt that it will be as overwhelming as the support Noynoy and Villar have in this upcoming election.
May the best man win!
He was trying hard to be a hero, pero hindi bumenta. Nagresign pa, hindi pa rin bumenta. Isip isip, well, ano ginagawa ni Vi, kaya hayan, buy one take one ang nangyari sa LP.
My service in government is of public record. It is one unstained by any charge of corruption or wrongdoing. -Recto
“Unstained”…it may be so because no one complained against him in court, dikit kasi siya sa kusina noon.
Completely agree with Ralphie that his service in government being a defender and supporter of the fake president until he jumped ship recently is of public record.
Balweg:
. .yun laang. . .
Chi, here”s what I wrote on Feb. 12, 2007 (http://www.ellentordesillas.com/?p=914):
The only missing spice for the dish that’s being cooked at the LP-Noynoy camp is Gloria Arroyo. She may not be there physically but her smell was so strong, scared the gentleman from Cebu that he dashed out for a quick get away.
Noynoy opted for their latest recruit Recto-Santos over one of the very first volunteer to join his camp. He chose quantity over quality. Recto was never an opposition. He was for Gloria all the way and so it is safe to say that he is a representative of Gloria in the LP camp and in case the LP wins, it’s still happy days for Gloria, Mike, Mikey and Dato. Kapag nanalo si Noy, it will be another gloria administration bearing the face of Noynoy.
To compare Recto and Osmena is a no brainer. This shows that something is wrong with his judgement. It’s a far cry from what his camp are trumpeting about the good versus evil. It’s all talk to win the votes of the people. But people always know when someone is speaking with passion and from the heart.
last time si Lacson dinidikit nyo kay Gloria ngayon naman si Noynoy… ano ba yan! ako’y nagugulumihan na sa inyo.. kayo’y nakakahelo! ano ba talga mga ate, kuya?
RE: Ang sa akin lang, he was already given a chance once, he blew it! Marahil, nandyan pa rin ang maraming suporta sa kanya but I doubt that it will be as overwhelming as the support Noynoy and Villar have in this upcoming election.
Well, Igan Parasabayan…tama ka, BUT kailangan maunawaan natin once and for all…ano ba talaga ang tunay na istorya sa likod ng conspiracy ng EDSA DOS thru the starring of Kardinal Makasalanan, AFP/PNP disgruntled general problems, Tita Cory a.k.a. “I am Sorry”, Tabaka & co., Gloria & her lapdogs, civil socialites a.k.a. elitista and bystanders Kapinuyan who supported GMA.
Batangueños’ will
Recto, in an interview over radio dzMM on Saturday, said that jumping to the LP, instead of joining his friend Sen. Manny Villar’s Nacionalista Party (NP) was the hardest political decision he has made.
He said that before he and Santos were formally sworn in as LP members, he had to call Villar to inform the NP standard bearer of his decision.
Recto insisted that it was their allies in Batangas who pushed them to run under the LP ticket. He said the political leaders told them to help Aquino in his presidential bid.
I saw how Noynoy inspired them),” he said.
He said negotiations between them and the LP lasted for about a month.

May news kay Erap care of E. Maceda.

Liberal Party is fast becoming the Mongrel party.
Perl, agree ako sa iyo. Si Noynoy pa ang ididikit kay GMA? Incredibly stupid!!!
Former Governor Sanchez took his oath as member of Villar’s NP. I may be reaching but could it be one of the reasons why LP invited/accommodated the Recto’s?
Hindi ko masyadong kakilala si Sanchez at nababasa ko lang na jueteng lord siya sa Batangas at yung muntik patayin allegedly by Rector’s brother and Magdalo members. Ang mga Batangueno dito ay maaring makakapagsabi kung between Recto and Sanchez, who is the lesser evil?
They’re both evil…as far as I’m concerned nobody should vote for them.
Statement of San Juan City Mayor Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito:
Senator Osmeña showed he is a man of principle.
In including Ralph Recto in its senatorial slate, the LP proved it is no difference from other parties employing politics of accommodation.
Accepting PaLaKa members will not fit the image LP wants to project. How can LP, which is supposed to be the “righteous” party, promote politicians who are in conflict with their own principles?
The message is acceptable. But coming from JV Ejercito?
Many thanks, Ellen.
So Recto lied that he did nothing wrong…recorded din pala ang turtle votes courtesy of Bello as ordered by the unana herself.
I’ll ask them to forward it…ikalat.
Ayos ang message ni JV if he didn’t know that his half-bro Jinggoy is cohorting with NP.

May news kay Erap care of E. Maceda.
Recto?
NO WAY….puro sila traydor at peste sa lipunan.
“Nahihirapan kasi silang i-Glue. – chi”
Hikhikhik!
maybe we’ll just have to accept that jumping ship is a fact of political life in a multi-party landscape, especially where the parties do not have solid principles and platforms. but, i’d like to say again that to shun acceptable people from the PGMA admin is a divisive attitude in an already divided nation. what should irk people are the marriages of political conveniences, where those who would have gladly stabbed each other in the back just a while ago are now carousing with each other.
