It was good to see those young military officers again assembled in one place, still speaking and yearning for reforms in government.
Their symbol, the sunburst, was everywhere. They wore it proud on their black shirts. It was also plastered on the walls of the UP Hostel where the Samahang Magdalo was holding its first national convention.
There were some 600 delegates representing 375 chapters all over the country.
In his written message, Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Samahang Magdalo chairman , exulted, “Tunay nga na makasaysayan ang araw na ito dahil idinadaraos natin ang kaganapang ito sa ilalim bng isang Administrasyon na pinipilit na gibain at basagin an gating grupo. Kailan lang, walang may lakas loob na madikit sa ating grupo at mismong ang ating simbolo ay iniiwasan dahil takot na makulong o mapag-initan.
“Subalit sa pagpunta ninyo ngayon, lahat kayo at taas-noong suot sa inyong dibdib an gating simbolo at buong tapang na lumahok bilang delegado ng 375 chapters na kumakatawan sa mahigit 40,000 miyembro sa buong bansa Dahil dito, ang araw na ito ay isang tagumpay para sa magdalo at unang hakbang para sa tagumpay ng sambayanang Pilipino.”
It was six years ago, July 27, 2003, when these young military officers made a mark in the Filipino’s consciousness. They occupied the Oakwood Hotel at the Makati Commercial Center, exposed the corruption and other shenanigans in the military and demanded the resignation of Gloria Arroyo.
The 19- hour siege didn’t cause the downfall of Arroyo. But the nameless group of military officers won the admiration of the public, who were silently outraged by Arroyo’s misgovernance. They planted the seed of open dissent which grew as Arroyo and her cohorts became more brazen in their corruption and trampling of the law.
The name “Magdalo” was not the group’s idea. What they had in mind was “Bagong Katipuneros” with the red sunburst as their symbol.
When an ANC executive producer saw the officers on the TV screen with their armbands, he remarked, “Doesn’t that look like the symbol of Emilio Aguinaldo’s Magdalo? “ For lack of a name to call the group, media used “Magdalo” and it stuck up to this day.
Rather than spend time and effort correcting media’s label, the group adopted it. When Trillanes, the group’s spokesman, ran for senator in 2007, he included “Magdalo” as one of his nick names.
Trillanes said the group’s decision to enter the political arena is in consonance with their desire for reforms in governance.
In deciding to support the presidential bid of Sen. Francis Escudero, the Samahang Magdalo showed that they are not easily swayed by public emotions. Former Air Force Lieutenant Ashley Acedillo, Magdalo Party secretary general said the party limited the choice to four opposition bets: Escudero, Benigno Aquino, III, Manuel Villar, and Joseph Estrada.
Acedillo said administration presidential bet, National Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., was excluded from the list because he has vowed to continue with the policies of the Arroyo administration if he wins.
“He made a statement that he will continue the policies of this administration. We have no business considering him because precisely, it is merely a continuation of the current dispensation which we want changed,” said Acedillo.
Acedillo said Escudero got 53.7 per cent.
Samahang Magdalo also decided to support the senatorial bids of Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim and Col. Ariel Querubin, who may be running under another party.
The group will venture into local politics. Acedillo will run for representative of the second district of Cebu City; Navy Ltsg James Layug in the second district of Taguig City; and Army Capt. Dante Langkit for the lone district of Kalinga province.
Marine Capt. Gary Alejano will run for mayor of Sipalay City in Negros Occidental.
“Dito susubukan nating basagin ang pag-hawak sa kapangyarihan ng mga tiwaling pulitiko na wala nang ginawa kundi proteksyunan ang kanilang interes,” Trillanes said.
His final message gives the public an idea of the group’s longterm plans: “Samantala, tuluyan nating palaganapin an gating hanay at darating din ang araw, na isang kapwa Magdalo ang ating isusulong sa pagka-Pangulo ng Pilipinas”.

Chiz led the impeachment against Gloria Arroyo inthe House of Representatives. His being ina-anak of Gloria has never been in the way of his opposing her corrupt administration.

Halo-halo party ang NPC ni Big Boss Danding Cojuangco. May panig kay Gloria Arroyo at isang panig ay nasa oposisyon. Ano ang nasa gitna? Ano ba talaga ang Nationalist People’s Coalition(NPC)? Siguro tactical alliance lang para sa longterm plans ng Magdalo group. Kung sabagay wala silang malaking datong para malawakang political campaign at makinarya. Magulo ang pulitika sa ating Inang Bayan. Tiyakin na hindi tuta ni Gloria ang susunod na pangulo.
Sana lang di sila nagkamali sa pinili nila. Sa totoo lang, kung sa “least” na kurakot sa mga presidentiables ngayon, si Chiz at si Noynoy lang ang pasok diyan. Ewan lang ha, baka magaling lang sila magtago ng kalokohan, pero sa ngayon wala pa naman na bubunyag sa mga kalokohan at pangaabuso nila sa bayan habang silaý na sa posisyon. Ang hirap talaga ng multiple choice, isa lang ang pwedeng piliin at di pwedeng all of the above o kayaý none of the above. Grrrr!!!
Escudero’s statement:
“I am very grateful to see that we still have a preponderance of men and women who are willing to sacrifice everything, even their life and liberty, for the greater good.
“Let me take this opportunity to also declare my unqualified support for Samahang Magdalo, its leaders and the ideals and principles the group stands for.
“We are no different from each other as I too advocate for change. With our new found unity, it is my fervent hope that we usher in a new brand of leadership in the country. One that will be more responsive to the needs of the people. One that will put an end to a cycle of corruption and exploitation.”

Dahil kung walang pagbabago sa kasalukuyang line-up, panalo na si Noynoy.

These young men are using their knowledge of and experience in the military to organise and get things going at a national level with great speed to boot, what I suppose, les moyens du bord (limited means). To think that most of the leaders are incarcerated. Hah! That should give our dear corrupt political leaders the shivers.
Good! They will give tradpols who have millions and millions in illicit fundings a real run for their money.
I notice they are throwing their support behind a young man, i.e., like them. Can only opine that these young men are out do something to change the political landscape — no more tradpols.

November is too late to find alignments. Then the candidates will be filing for their candidacy na. These candidates who will be filing for their candidacy can not even talk to anyone on their candidacy na. So the next time they can open their mouths will be in February na. Anna, the least Honasan can do is to help all these idealistic men pursue their political aspirations. Afterall, he was the one who partly caused their incarceration. Chiz. He is the only untainted name in the group.
He doesn’t have a Hacienda Luisita who abuses their workers. He doesn’t have a mother who allowed at least 25 farmers killed by “firing squad” at Mendiola. He doesn’t have a Kamag-anak Inc. led by an uncle. He is not a man who has a “no talk no mistake” attitude and who cannot make a decision by himself.
He is not a man who took advantage of his power and position to enter into lopsided contracts and loans in his favor with the government and he has no C-5 in his belt.
The only drawback is his being a godson of Gloria. But that’s only “circumstantial” and it’s not even a blood- relation unlike the Kamag-anak, Inc. He has already proven that it’s out of the question when he led the impeachment trials against the ninang. He has also proven his consistency as an opposition, and not a political opportunist who jumps from one group to another for political convenience.
Being a candidate backed- up by a big name businessman who happened to be the founder of his party is not a problem. Who are supporting the other candidates anyway? Except maybe for Villar who has a bottomless pile of money; Gibo who has the treasure of Malacanang and maybe a Garci; and Noynoy has on his side the big businesses, a giant TV station and various broadsheets who can easily twist and manipulate every news item in his favor. For Chiz, in a disadvantage position, he has to fight hard fair and square with the help of the growing Magdalo.
And being supported by a businessman and a godson of Gloria is not a hindrance to a good, transparent, honest and clean government. It’s on the character, sincerity and integrity of a person which by the way the Magdalos seen in Chiz.

To me, his being godson or whatever to Gloria is not an issue, not unless it has a tangible bearing on his actions.
On the whole, I have doubts about Chiz Escudero; to be fair, don’t know much about him save on what I’ve read here. Something bothers me about him — can’t explain it; eg., his decision to grant passing grades to students across the board because of Ondoy was a typical proactive action. Very little thought went through that declaration, like a teen-ager.
Reminds me of Gloria.
Chiz is a better choice among the crop of young politicians, at least he was a consistent oppositionist since 2001. Unlike others who were responsible for the installation of Evil Bitch like Villar, Noynoy, and others.

The choice is between two real oppositionists, Erap and Chiz.
Accusations against Chiz are all speculations; nothing is documented or proven, whereas the issues against Villar, Gibo and Noynoy are documented and proven facts or at least we know they are in fact. He should not have been even considered by the Magdalo group if they did not see any hope and belief in him, the same group that most of us here were praising to high heavens for their beliefs and principles. The Magdalos are not blind and deaf and they know what they are going into.
As to Erap his life is an open book, what you see in him is what you get. He is the most experienced and decisive among them and he will not be the type who will still be learning on the job. No trial and error sort of thing. It’s true he was convicted, but we also know that it’s all a result of political drama and a lutong macaw decision which was already decided even before the trial started. Proof: those judges who read the decision of Gloria were all given their dues. The only problem in him is his eligibility. His advance age is not too much a problem. The more you aged the wiser you become. Reagan was the oldest president of the US at age over 70, yet he turned out to be a good president.
Now those who say that all the major candidates are all the same, walang itulak-kabigin, walang mapagpilian dahil lahat sila ay masama, I don’t even suggest that you pick the lesser evil. If one can’t make a choice among them, either don’t go to the polls and vote or pick someone between Madrigal and Perlas. I heard they are also running but on empty.
After all The Philippines is a free country and everybody is entitled to their own opinion and free to vote whoever they consider worth the effort.

Ang nagustuhan ko lang sa ginawa ng grupong Magdalo, hindi sila nagpadala sa kung sino ang lamang sa survey o sino ang popular o kung sino ang maypera. Madali naman kasing sumakay na lang sa Noynoy-Mar “bandwagon” o sa Jeep ni Erap o makisayaw na lang sa saliw ng pera ni Manny at Willie ng Woowoowee!
Kinalimutan nila ang kanilang personal loyalties, friendships and vested interest at nagdesisyon sila base sa mga batayan na inaalala nilang dapat taglayin ng dapat maging Pangulo ng bansa: Character, Vision at Leadership.
In short, ginawa nila ang desisyon nila hindi base kung sino ang kilala o kaibigan nila o kung sino ang popular o makakatulong sa kanila o kung saan sila magkaka pera kungdi para sa bayan.
Naglatag sila ng processo at nagtalaga ng mga batayan para sa kanilang pagpili at sinunod nila iyon. Yun ang kahanga-hanga.
Siguro mayroon tayong pwedeng matutunan dito. Siguro, kung lahat tayo gagawin ang ginawa nila, baka may pag-asa pang maka ahon ang ating bayan.

Whoever said that Chiz didn’t make a strand against Arroyo. He was the one who led the impeachment against Arroyo. That’s why he has no CDF (pork barrel).
You also have to be wary of stories in the Tribune. That’s Erap’s newspaper. For a while also Villar.

NO CDF? Wow, mali yata yan. Sa mga ibang blogs, may mga nagsasabi na nagsinungaling si Chiz na sabi nga raw niya ay hindi siya nakatanggap ng pork barrel, at kanya nga raw wala siyang improvement na nagawa sa kanyang distrito. Nuon pa ito kanya hindi ko na gustong hanapin ang mga link. So mayroon talagang natanggap na pork barrel pero hindi alam kung saan napunta (maybe sa pocket). Well, maybe mayroong nakakaalam na reader dito na may authrority to tell, for the record, the truth about his pork barrel.
Why do we have to be forced to choose between Chiz and NoyNoy? Is there no one else? Choosing chiz is just like giving Gloria a new term…after all his talk and grandstanding against her, they meet after office and become mag ninang, see each other during birthdays, etc. If he wasn’t so damned critical about her I would have overlooked this detail but this is ridiculous!
We might as well field in Lacson for president, can’t anyone run for office without spending so much?
Does it really have to be this way? So people with good intentions have to get in bed with crooks inorder to get things done around here? If thats the case then let Gloria stay, its the same thing over and over again!
Chiz or Noynoy and others will embrace the system that supported them, grant some favors, and eventually all their good intentions watered down by rationalizations…

Anna, re Chiz’s “decision to grant passing grades to students across the board because of Ondoy was a typical proactive action. Very little thought went through that declaration, like a teen-ager.”
Chiz recommended that schoolchildren who were affected by tyhoon Ondoy would be given a passing grade just for that grading period. Because what would you do, fail them for that grading period because they were busy surviving the devastation? That’s what he said as double jeopardy.
Just for that grading period. Next grading period, they would have to make sure that they catch up. This is where the school’s support program should come in. They should help those children catch up.
The DepEd has adopted Chiz’ recommendation.
Bata pa si Chiz, trapo na. Sure he joined the call for GMA’s impeachment. When the time came to work, he sat on it. I’m very disappointed with the Magdalo, they believed in Chiz’s rhetoric. Di ba NPC yan? At the end of the day, si Danding pa rin ang amo niyan. His father did not join the call for GMA’s impeachment. They are obviously playing it safe. Win-win nga naman.

Magtatag ka ng sarili mong partido o grupo para wag mong e blame sa Magdalo kung bakit kay Chiz sila. INSECURE talaga ang mga taong hindi napili ng Magdalo.
Dugo ng pinoy laging paghihiganti kaya naman sa senado at kongresso walang natatapos na trabaho kundi laging nagtatalak.

He took the easy way out. No reflection there. Easiest thing to do, so give it to them kind of.
Nope, Ondoy is a case of force majeure alright but such is life, things happen. Grading could have waited until things had stabilised!
My nephews were in the same position — I still would say that they didn’t deserve a passing mark for something they didn’t actually earn! Is that how we want our kids to grow — learn that we can short cut the system? Because at the end of the day, that’s what it was, teaching the kids about how to short cut the system (even if it was through no fault of their own).
Education shouldn’t be taken for granted because of Ondoy. I don’t know, perhaps, they should have held the grades in abeyance sort of…allow kids time to do review and then give them the exams at some other time or later date — that’s instilling right sense of values.

Democrazy in action! That’s what i like in this blog. We can all agree without being disagreeable. Or if we ever disagree among ourselves, I hope we will be able to control our BP from shooting up, nevermind if the decibels of our hoarse protestations sometimes hit the roof. We have a common enemy(Putot) but we have different ways of getting rid of her. At the end of the day, I hope things will workout right for all our sake. May the most deserving candidate, who is not Garcified, win.

Hindi naman for the whole grading year ipapasa yung mga bata siguro sa 2nd o 3rd grading period lang kung saan natapat. Sa dami ng holidays na naidagdag sa ating bansa hindi nagrereklamo ang mga parents. Nasa bata pa rin yan at gabay ng mga parents nila.

I think I got that bit alright. Doesn’t change the equation – the process is the same!
Still, I believe they should have been given the chance to work for that grade rather than hand it to them easily.
Am not faulting the kids here — am faulting the thinking process of Escudero.
I’m saying this because the Philippine children are not the only ones who had to go through this sort of thing because of a case of force majeure.
Kids in Europe had experienced this sort of thing when fires devastated villages or when schools were buried under the snow for weeks, floods inundating an entire community. In Eastern Europe, there were wars. But children were not easily given passing marks even for a term because of an act by nature that had devastated a part of their school life.
It wasn’t that difficult to give children time to re-do their exams at a later date. The kids felt relieved and most of all, they grew stronger — they learned nothing in life is for “free.”
Escudero is proving to be as knee-jerk reactor as his ninang.

For seven years, he received his pork barrels. What did he do with it? Did he use the seven years of pork barrels for the improvement of the 1st District of Sorsogon? Where did Chiz put the 7 years of pork barrels?
Why Chiz Escudero never listed about his accomplishments in Sorsogon? The answer is simple, he accomplished nothing in Sorsogon. So, what happened to that 7 years of pork barrels that he received?

Imperative that all the frontrunners/candidates for the 2010 presidency must make their platform clear and most of all must speak out now (or forever be damned) on what he/she will do about charges against Gloria and her children? Will he have those individuals investigated? Or will he/she, like Teodoro, declare no, we need a “HEALING PRESIDENCY”…
