Suicide

Inquirer Editorial

After watching the way the police have been handling the investigation of the death of Trinidad Arteche Etong, ABS-CBN news anchor Ted Failon’s wife, Filipinos have reason to be afraid — very afraid — of their so-called protectors.

From the time the Quezon City police began working on the case, it was clear they wanted to pin down Failon in a murder charge.

With little to go on but a fertile imagination, Superintendent Frank Mabanag, chief of the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit, theorized that Etong could have been killed in their Pajero and brought up to the bathroom where Failon claimed to have found her lying in a pool of blood.

Right in his own house, Failon was made to undergo a paraffin test as police investigators gleefully posed behind him for souvenir photos.

Even as Etong was undergoing emergency treatment for a bullet wound to her head, the police “invited” Failon to submit to an investigation that would drag through the night up to the early hours of morning.

Eight hours later, the investigators finally let him go.

But soon after that, Mabanag announced that a “manhunt” had been launched for the broadcaster who, it turned out, had just gone back to the hospital to be with his wife.

When the paraffin test yielded a negative result, a gentler and more humane police force would have taken it as a cue to ease up a bit and give Failon, his kin and his household some space to rest and maybe try to come to terms with the tragedy.

But no, the frustrating outcome seemed only to have roused the Quezon City police to intensify their persecution of everyone closely or remotely involved in the case.

In a series of operations, policemen arrested first, Failon’s two maids, his driver and a utility man, and later, two of his in-laws.

Especially brutal was the arrest of Failon’s sister-in-law, Pamela Trinchera, who was dragged protesting and screaming out of the hospital where her sister was being treated.

The police recommended that all, except Failon’s brother-in-law, be charged with obstruction of justice, an offense the police were hard put to define.

The four house help stand accused of tampering with evidence because they cleaned up the bathroom where Etong was reportedly found and the car in which Etong was brought to the hospital.
All claimed they did it on their own (to spare Failon’s younger daughter the trauma of seeing her mother’s blood, according to the maids) and without any intention of hiding a crime.

It seems not to have occurred to the investigators that if indeed Etong died by her own hand — a possibility they say they have not ruled out — then no crime was committed, in which case they will have to explain what kind of evidence was tampered with — evidence of a non-crime, perhaps?

The case against Trinchera (which the prosecutor mercifully dismissed) was even curiouser.

The police wanted her charged for blocking a procedure that the policemen themselves described as inconclusive.

That was what they said when the paraffin test on Failon yielded a negative result.

Why did they insist on doing a test that has been discredited (according to one forensic expert) on a woman who was fighting for her life?

It is not for us to say whether Etong’s death was suicide or murder.

What we can say is that what the Quezon City police have done is an overkill.

Chief Superintendent Roberto Rosales, the National Capital Region police chief, says the investigation is being conducted carefully and by the book.

But as crime investigations go, this one has been going at lightning speed for a police force that remains clueless about assassinations of two Cabinet undersecretaries, not to mention the murders of scores of journalists and activists.

It is clear that the investigators are rushing to implicate anyone and everyone on anything, and especially Failon if they can.

And the reason is obvious: Failon has been a thorn in the side of the Quezon City police, with his biting radio commentaries on the rubout of suspected car thieves on EDSA a couple of months ago and the recent upsurge of carjacking cases in the city.

This is sweet revenge for some city police officers, and they don’t care who gets hurt.

Neither do they care if the whole nation watches as they wage their vendetta in the glare of television cameras.

Their message to the media and the public is unmistakable: Don’t mess with us or else…

Perhaps it is time Filipinos began to ask whether they should continue to support with their taxes an organization that is going berserk.

Continuing to do so is beginning to look like suicide.

  1. PNP announced that four QC cops who manhandled the Failons were relieved. We’ve heard this term “relieved” many times not knowing what it really means. As always, relieving bad cops mean transferring them to another unit while the heat is on. This should not be the case. They should be dismissed. What about the CIDU Chief Supt. Mabanag? He was there at the scenes most of the time. He not only did not stop his men from committing the acts, but even ordered them to do it. Why wasn’t Mabanang relieved too? At the very least, it’s command responsibility. One fat PNP officer who was shown pushing and manhandling the victims was not included in the punishment. This officer is big with a big belly. If it were during the time of Lacson, he would be asked to shed his pounds and waist. But…not in this evil administration when cops are not only getting fatter, their wallets too.

  2. Now,I’m convinced.

Wala silang puso, walang budhi, halang ang kaluluwa. Hindi man lang nila ipinagliban muna habang naghihingalo yung biktima. Wala silang konsiderasyon. Mga demonyo.

  6. syria syria

  7. chit chit

Basta ako naniniwala na suicide yon.

  8. para tayong sinu-suicide while watching the video of those cops manhandling the failon case. Susmaryosep

  9. As Cocoy said, it’s 50-50 on Ted Failon’s wife death. I’ve been following this with keen interest. I find some inconsistencies. Let’s remember that even the best and nicest person could commit a crime.

  10. teddy agbayani teddy agbayani

honestly i am not surprised. afterall when you serve an evil regime you can never be good. just hope mamatay isa isa ang mga pamilya nila at pag nakita niyo, huwag niyo rin dadalhin sa ospital dahil obstruction of justice yan. really hope gloria and her evil cohorts die but slowly and painfully.

  11. teddy agbayani teddy agbayani

the only way for ted failon to clear his name is if he points to sen. ping lacson as the one who murdered his wife. he can say he heard former pres. joseph estrada giving sen. ping the instruction infront of all the visitors present during the wake of pres. erap’s mom.

darkness is really shrouding our country. when will we rise up and rid ourselves of the evil incarnate illegally staying at malacanang.

I have been finding if difficult to post my comments. Almost always blocked by the spam filter running in Ellen’s blog. Kaya kahit nahihirapan, submit parin at baka makalusot.

Its has become really hard to trust the police force (PNP). They have allowed themselves to be used in nefarious activities such as kidnapping, planting of evidence and even covering the crimes of their benefactors. Now they have become vindictive specially to people (such as Failon) who exposes their nefarious activities. The police of the PNP have mutated into a monster that terrorizes the citizenry. They are back to the old days of the PC (Phil. Constabulary) and are even doing worst. The police PNP is now a criminal syndicate, a gang of wrongdoers. They pretend to be brave and strong but only to the poor and weak. Police patola. They go well with the DOJ and Sec. Gonzales. May they be all stricken down by lightning and toast in the fires of hell.

  16. To paraphrase Ted Failon: Naleh-leh-to ako (nalilito ako, i’m confused)

  17. Nandoon na ako, obstruction of justice ang nangyari dahil nilinis nila ang crime scene, dapat sinampahan muna nila ng kaso sa korte at kukuha sila ng warrant of arrest sa judge, hindi iyung bitbitin muna bago kasuhan.

  18. How crude the method of investigation is in the Philippines, Ellen. No wonder witnesses would rather keep to themselves what they know than end up being forced to admit to a crime they do not commit but have seen.

I can understand the necessity of asking the maids, et al close to the victim what they know about the case but to unrightly arrest them before the police can even start a serious investigation is definitely the work of idiots, not even amateur investigators.

Puro kabulastugan. Magaling lang ang mga unggoy na manakot o mangidnap like what those police officers tried to do to Jun Lozada when he came back from Hong Kong.

You’re right. Hoodlum ang labas, instead of protectors of the citizens of the Philippines and keepers of peace and order.

I bet you, iyong mga kamag-anak kong dating mga police ng Manila, etc. must be fidgetting in their graves at how bad the reputation, etc. of the police force in the Philippines of the Philippines led by PMAers! None of my relatives who worked as policemen when the Manila Police Department for instance was known as the Manila’s Finest went to the PMA as a matter of fact. They went to law schools and had police training in the Manila Police Academy.

Now, apparently, policemen are best described as hoodlums in uniform. Kawawang bansa!

Obstruction of justice daw? I doubt if they even understand the meaning of those words. Yuck!

I saw it as not in good taste, may sarcasm at gustong manginsulto sa nagtanong. I do not give so much respect to that kind of person.

  22. parasabayan parasabayan

I watched the videos too on how the “suspects” were treated. Boy, the police were treating these people like they were already guilty!

The cleaning up of the bathroom where the crime occured and the car etc seem odd though. Why clean up a crime scene? The maids can’t be faulted. Someone told them to clean up. That someone may have a hand in the crime, if there is ever one. With a compromised crime scene, I doubt if Trina’s death will ever be solved. Sloppy talaga ang mga police. If the crime is committed by a “famous” person, they either hide the evidences or do an overkill. They can’t seem to do the right thing. Kanino pa ba magmamana yang mga yan? Kung yung pinaka malaking kriminal nga eh nakaupo pa rin sa trono and these crime solvers can’t even do anything about it.

  23. Wawa naman ang mga members ng DEAL or NO DEAL agencies(PARAK),bubug sarado naman sa mga taong bayan, ang mga sandamakmak na bugok ang mga UTAK, obstructuon of justice. This is only showed the professionalism of STUPIDITIES OF OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT agencies how do they interpret thier power, specially the head of arresting officer, probably he wanna be star a TV show like GAME KA NA BA or BINGO PINOY,thats why we been the laughing stock internationally, from head to toe by the foriegners, mahilig pumapel sa di dapat papelan katulad na lang the LACOSTE QUEEN AKA na Travelling Slave Trader lady na puro ang lipad sa ME para ihanap ng trabaho ang kanyang mga nauutong kababayan at suportahan ang naghihingalong ecomomia ng bayan at mayroon naman dudukutin sa kaban ng bayan.

  24. Mike Mike

I would like to believe that this is a suicide case. For one, the immediate relatives of Trina Etong are the ones vouching for Ted Failon’s innocence, most especially the deceased sister Pamela who is also at the house of the Etong’s during the suicide incident. If my sister is killed by her husband or if I have even a miniscule of doubt about my brother-in-law, I wouldn’t have gone out on national television in vouching for his innocence. I would instead condemn him and that given the chance, will shoot him in the head too. The whole clan is vouching for him, even close friends of Trina who in an interview said that Trina have told them earlier of her plan to end her life. Unfortunately, they didn’t take her words seriously at that time.
As for the cleaning of the “crime” scene, unfortunately for most of us Filipinos, many didn’t know that that is illegal and, yes, can be charge with obstruction of justice. But their reason for doing the cleaning of the “crime” scene is to protect Ted’s 12 year old daughter from seeing such a horrible sight. That to me, that is quite acceptable, for I wouldn’t want my very young child to witness such a horrific sight. That would be very traumatic.
As to Ted’s unassuming behavior, no one can really know why he acted like that. It could be that he was, again, trying to protect and shielding his family from making this whole tragedy in to a spectacle which unfortunately, already is. Ted, being a broadcaster should know that. For all we know, he could have been guilty of sensationalizing similar tragedies like this in the past as a radio broadcaster. I remembered several years back, a very close cousin of mine died in a car crash. The immediate feeling after seeing him in the morgue is one of numbness. I was trying to talk, but my words are hardly audible. I was stammer stutter.
My condolences to Ted and his family, may Trina rest in peace.

  25. syria syria

They’re ignorant of the law.

  26. About this one, there is still one piece of vital evidence that is still unreleased (or withheld?)–the fingerprints on the gun. Naturally, Ted’s fingerprints would have been there, as the police say that the gun was handed to them by Ted himself. If he was the shooter, then his fingerprints would be the only ones present in the gun. However, if Trina’s fingerprints are also present, then she also handled the gun, further bolstering the claim that she committed suicide.

The question is, have the police tried to extract prints off the gun? They should have done that the moment they got the gun. Or would that piece of evidence would further bolster the suicide theory, which would really put them into deep trouble, considering how they have acted?

They can use Luminol to visualized blood eventhough it had been cleaned by standard cleaning detergents. It can even detect blood that had need cleaned for years. The price is also cheap. Perhaps P600 will be enough for 1 bedroom and a bathroom.

Luminol normally comes on 2 types, the professional, one that will not destroy DNA and the novice where DNA will be destroyed.

A BIG SHAME to our country. These acts of our FOOLISH MEN or rather POLICE MEN are ruthlessly barbaric. MGA ANIMAL!

grizzy, Ted is one of the most popular radio/tv commentator in the country today. He is fearless and usually criticizes on the immoralities of politicians, the police and the military. He works for ABS-CBN and the latest critism he made on the QCPD is the rub out of the carnapers where a TV crew of ABS-CBN caught QCPD policemen on video the shooting of 2 dying carnapers. Iyon daw parrafin testing for gun powder ay obsolete na na klase ng testing, ibig sabihin hindi nakatune ang mga police sa mga bagong technology of testing for powder burns. The cleaning or removing of evidences from a crime scene, if it is done with INTENT to cover a crime, then that is “obstruction of justice.” The investigators and the prosecutors have to prove the INTENT, otherwise, the case doesn’t hold water.

Ang why were they insisting
“obstruction of justice”…. amazing and at the same time confusing. The policemen should have at least thought that the family was grieving, konting respeto sana, pero talagan, walang respecto ang mga yan sa damdamin ng kapwa. Even the statements of the police were conflicting, one syas they are being invited, the other say, they are being arrested.
Where the the PNP Chief, was he not even informed? Was there not even one police who was watching TV at that time?

Paraffin tests are not admissible in US courts because they have been proven to be unreliable (People v. George Wesley 83 N.Y.2d 417, New York Court of Appeals, 1994).

“The `paraffin test’ designed to reveal whether the person tested had within recent hours fired a gun has not gained that standing in scientific recognition or demonstrated that degree of reliability to justify courts in approving its use in criminal cases.” (Born v. State of Oklahoma).

Was it suicide or murder? We don’t yet know; but the paraffin tests will not help solve the case. Talagang third world pa ang pulis natin; yung DOJ Sec., out of this world.

46. patria adorada patria adorada

After all these years,we,Filipinos are still a savage race.

  47. Our Police force remains to have a very weak sense of morality in respect to determining between right and wrong. This is Police immorality. Circumstances where police officers
could find themselves in questionable ethical situations relate to friends,
acquaintances, relatives or other police officers and conflicting interest of power. These may be in four different categories of corruption, based on their nature or grounds of attachment, personal problems, procedure (process), and the handling of valuables.

Preventing police officers misusing their power requires mainly education, training and discussions among police officers on ethics. In this case, our police force lacks the proper procedural process during an investigation. Increased supervision and support by the supervisors, improving procedure in selecting police officers, increased disciplinary
measures, and improving police work environment should be implemented not only by the chief but the whole area of executives. Improving police processes requires budget for training and recruiting better ones. The Senate can play an important role in implementing disciplinary actions thru legislations and changes to our laws.

When addressing what the chief command of the police could do to facilitate morality
within the police force is ALWAYS to set a good example that education and introduction
should be increased, and that the supervisors should take more initiative than now in
    monitoring their own personnel.

I bet they all smoke and play tong H…
When the country has no strong foundation at the top, the bottom will never exist.

  48. When his wife died, Ted Failon’s two daughters were crying but he appeared to be emotionless and not crying. At the outset, let me say I was and am still his fan for many years.
But, this recent tragic incident made me doubt about his true character. The reason for her alleged suicide was financial problem. His wife lost P20M on bad investment. Anyone or any husband would be very upset which such a huge amount. Definitely, there was a very serious argument before her death. And why did Failon refuse to surrender her cell phone to prove that he and she were communicating before she killed herself? The media especially ABS-CBN are of course sympathetic to Ted Failon. Hence, most of the versions being provided by the media are favorable to him. Cocoy said the wife did not commit suicide and Ted did not kill her. Then who? Could it be another member of the household? And why?

  49. New Era General Hospital is owned by Iglesia Ni Cristo. Why did the hospital management allow those cops to arrest the suspects inside ICU and cause lots of commotion endangering the safety of other patients? Years ago, a group of cops when Senator Lacson was the PNP Chief then committed the same thing. They followed some INC members mistaken as criminals inside the hospital. The poor victims were beaten and the cops even threatened the hospital staff not to intervene. When the INC leadership learned about this, INC’s own security force rushed to the scene and surrounded the hospital. Had it not for the timely arrival of a General, those cops would have been shot by the INC security men waiting for them outside. The point is…if INC was quick to protect the hospital at that time, why not this time? Well, this time the victims were not INC members.

  50. regardless of the outcome, TED Failon’s life could be temporarily or permanently ruined.

But the police force must improve its image. At the same time, people must gain access on how to contact their local police when emergency arise. What’s the use of text messaging? The city or district must educate its citizen in reporting crimes such as this. In the US, people are instructed to call 911 to all kinds of emergency. The receiver will instruct the caller on what to do. We don’t have that yet in our country. This is a good project that needs to be implemented.

If you are paying taxes and you don’t know what to demand in terms of quality service from your public servants then you as citizen could be useless? 🙂 LOL

  51. Despite the incident, Erap is still willing to include Ted Failon in his senatorial ticket. I don’t think his other candidates would agree to his decision.

  52. biro lang, 🙂 sige nga magbayad nang magbayad kayo… it’s all going to corruption anyway and to pay the debts of those in office. swerte nila noh..

the money we borrowed was supposed to improve processes, governance, economic development and to increase local employment. The reason why wold bank implemented its strict guidelines because there might be strong evidenced NOW that those loans did not reach or will never reach to its intended purposes. Therefore, the people should not pay for that debts ( remember odious debts?) incurred by any regime. We have debts from Marcos to the present admin. kawawa ang pinoy , ang daming utang.. baka mag suicide kayo diyan ha?

anyway,I think I will run for president. I will become very rich and very popular 🙂

  53. Asiandelight, even though we’re delighted by your above comment, please stick to the topic. Peace and Cheer!

JocJocAbalos, the cops and DOJ have ax to grind against Ted Failon. Yes, Raul Goonzalez immediately ordered the NBI to conduct a separate investigation. Why did he have to do that when the QCPD was already investigating? That means if the result of the cops’ investigation is favorable to Failon, the NBI would come up with a different result. And of course, in any DOJ’s action, Malacanang is not far behind.

patria adorada, how can you say that we Filipinos are a savage race? Who invaded us in 1899 when we were just born as a nation after we cut off our umbilical chord from Spain in 1898? Who destroyed our developing culture and social behavior? Who tortured, raped and killed us when we fiercely resisted that invasion? Who, after 200,000 to 900,000 of us Filipinos died, transmitted to us the Heritage Injuring Virus in the form of glorification of that invasion and making us believe in their claim that it was to liberate us from the Spanish colonizers and a help to make us capable of governing our selves? To corrupt our heritage so that we will have no more reason to resist any foreign invasion, who transmitted to us this Heritage Injuring Virus in the form of the English language, American literature, American History and a whole American culture? Who replaced our Academia Militar with an americanized Philippine Military academy? Who abolished our organic and responsive constitution of that time? Who blocked all of us Filipinos whose moves were related to resistance? Who protected and facilitated those who colaborated with the Americans in promoting a constitution, a political development and a development of a whole new generation of Filipinos idolizing the abortionist of our nation, corruptor of our race and rapists of our Filipinas? Who developed this corruption of a whole and succeeding generations of Filipinos and a whole pool of political leaders that have been weakening perpetually that original resistance for the sake of love of the Filipino nation? Who developed these pool of political leaders who have been facilitating the deepening of clutches of these American invaders on our defense, political and economic systems?

Because of this corruption of our race and replication of it from one generation to the next, we have already developed into a stage known us Alienated Identity and Defense Syndrome. Because of this, do we expect to have a pool of political leaders and their departments to be protective of us Filipinos? Do we expect to have political leaders and their law enforces to have protective instinct towards us brother Filipinos? Is it not precisely what the disease, Alienated Identity and Defense Syndrome is supposed to do exactly as what the intention of their invasion in 1899 was all about?

We are a race as superior as any other race on earth. The Americans corrupted it for their own benefit. Unless we recover that original race, the Filipino race we will remain alienated against our own selves. Unless we are all aware of this development, we can not recover from this disease.

Let us recover our original nation- Filipinas!

  55. Cocoy said the wife did not commit suicide and Ted did not kill her. Then who? Could it be another member of the household? And why?—bitchevil,

May third party ba?

  56. Mike Mike

ABS-CBN is not dumb to know that Ted Failon’s career is over even if he is acquitted (if ever it reaches the court) or found to be innocent by the police. His reputation has already been besmirched in the eyes of the public, at least to those who’ve already pre-judged even if a case has yet to be filed against him. Thanks to the arrogant and vindictive QCPD police who released a lot of statements to the media insinuating that Failon is already guilty of murder even if they have yet to finish investigating the case. And thanks also to some newspaper and a rival TV network headlining what those arrogant police were harping then.
ABS-CBN knows these facts fully well, coz they are also known to sensationalize these type of news/stories. I guess they (ABS) knew that Ted is innocent that is why they are doing a lot of damage control for Ted Failon. I don’t think they would do that if they knew or has some inkling that Ted is guilty.

  57. Cocoy, paraffin test is not conclusive. The method being used in the Philippines is supposed to be stopped long ago. Whichever the result goes, positive or negative, the prosecutor or accused could always argue. Once the examiner declares the result, no way it can be overturned. Ted was found to be negative of powder burn. But then, he could already washed his hands. If the blood in the room were cleaned up, much more his hands and those of other household members. In the case of his wife, it could have also been washed when the medical staff applied the medical gadgets to her body.

  58. Diego K. Guerrero Diego K. Guerrero

QCPD pulis patola should go back to training camp. They are not serving an arrest order and gross lack of police professionalism as seen on TV footage. They watched too much Hollywood’s action movies.

  60. Ted’s wife was left handed. But in a suicide, the victim sometimes uses another hand to commit it. For instance, holding two hands on the head.

  61. Mike Mike

The reason why Trina Etong is found negative of powder burns is because it was more than 48 hours already before the police had a chance to take the test on her. And for sure, Trina’s hands were already cleaned up by the doctors and nurses before being inserted with IVs. during those times.
Besides, paraffin testing is already obsolete in other countries and is found to be unreliable.

  62. That’s right, Mike. In the US, they’re using a more advanced method. Why the RP authorities still use an obsolete method is not surprising. Even polygraph test is not conclusive. Why not consult a psychic or fortune teller?

  63. Rose Rose

Ang pinaka criminal sa Pilipinas at ang kanyang alipores are still at large at pabiyahe biyahe…at hindi hinuhuli..bakit? paano nila huhulihin ang sarili nila? The Phil. is theirs to keep for life….They own the military, they own the judges, they own the Bangko Sentral,,they own almost everything…ano ang laban natin? wa ay gid…antos na lang kita kay wara kita mahimo.. masubo gid pero wara kita mahimo…

  64. The question is…why are the cops treating Ted Failon and his relatives that way? There were VIP criminals who were allowed to be confined in hospitals when they were to be arrested on some imagined illness using high blood pressure or heart problem as reason. Ted could do this by asking to be brought to St. Luke’s like what other Malacanang crooks did; but he did not.

  65. San Diego say’s:

“Hindi porket high profile si Failon at critical siya sa QCPD…hindi totoong gumaganti kami kay Failon [Not because Failon is high profile and he has been critical of the QCPD, it is not true that we are taking our revenge on Failon]“

Is this a case of the fish getting caught in it’s own stinking mouth?

Inept police force using brawn not brains for lack of it that makes it really scary and then we have a PAO so confused what her role is thus SiRAUL O GOONzalez says she is crazy. This reminds me of the saying that it takes one to know one…….. I rest my case your horror este honor.

  66. It’s over the police ruled the case of Ted’s wife as suicide.CASE CLOSED.

  67. Bitchevil,

i am on topic. Police procedure and improving its processes requires financial allocation from the government also. In simple terms, we have too much debts that the country can no longer focus its priority coupled with a corrupt regime. Ideas without financial budget will not work.

In respect to this case, our constitution has given all of us the benefits of ” presumption of innocence”.

  68. Mike Mike

I remembered the case Vizconde Massacre, it was also so hyped up by the media because it involves a son of a senator. In that incident, it was the NBI who investigated it and since they have an axe to grind against Sen. Webb, they pointed to Hubert Webb who was in the USA when the massacre happened. To give you all a back grounder, I think it was Webb who blew the whistle on the disappearance of 11 Indian nationals inside the NBI detention cells. These Indians were arrested for drug trafficking and they were able to fly out of the country. It was Webb who initiated an investigation when he was still a congressman.
Everyone then has their own theory about the case.

  69. cocoy,

i am curious of the financial problem. do you know what it is? loss of money from investment or lender going after his wife or current house is used as collateral? why commit suicide? Can she be a battered or abused wife? Wife of low self esteemed? the nature of their relationship as husband and wife can be somewhat strange especially the “PO” on suicide note. A reasonable wife or person would have not committed suicide for fear of losing your marriage due to financial difficulty. My speculation is that Ted’s wife can be mentally ill?

Statistics of suicide: Some possible causes of suicide are imagined loss, like the breakup of a relationship, moving, loss of a friend, loss of freedom, or loss of other privileges.

Mental illnesses as risk factors indicate that depression, manic depression, schizophrenia, substance abuse, eating disorders, and severe anxiety increase the probability of suicide attempts and completions. 9 out of 10 people who commit suicide have a diagnosable mental illness.

Supposed she was suffering from mental illness or distressed, TED as husband will have all the reasons to know not only from verbalization but from his partners action. I’m not so sure if the financial issue is a new problem/ Somewhere in between and right after the financial problem ( probably within 6 months) there was threat or couples fight.

Suicide can be ruled out but the proximate cause cannot be ignored. IMHO

    interesting?

  70. No Cocoy, the Police has not ruled the case as suicide but only focusing on the suicide angle right now until more evidences come up. The investigation is ongoing.

  71. Doc O Doc O

“Yung kodak ng misis niya sa banyong nakaupo ay tuwid ang ulo, kung nagbaril iyun lupaypay ang ulo sa impact ng bala at maraming dugo sa tabing ulo niyang sasabog na didikit sa dingding” – Cocoy. I think it was Ted Failon’s maid who was in the picture when the police made a re-enactment and there were no more blood splatter because it was already cleaned prior to the police re-enactment. What I find interesting is the location of the gun from that re-enactment, it can be seen on the right side of the victim though the entry of the bullet is in the left temple and exiting on the right.

“”cocoy, maaring tama ka na namatay si Trina dahil na stress siya sa naririnig niyang iyakan dahil ikukulong ang kamaganakan niya. Yan din ang sabi ni Kaye” – Syria. I doubt that Trina is still conscious to hear or is aware of her surroundings considering the gravity of her injury. Patients sustaining this kind of severe head injury is almost always brain dead or already in a comatose state.

  72. Mike, I remember the Visconde massacre. Although your theory is good, it should not take away the culprits who involved Webb’s son. His son’s group was known drug addicts. NBI’s retaliation against Webb on the 11 Indians case was only incidental.

  73. stick to topic bitchevil. who cares about the indians?

  74. You got a good point, asiandelight. Ted’s wife could have been suffering from severe depression which caused her death.
For us Filipinos, depression or mentally ill is still taboo. In other advanced countries, such illness is already well accepted. The report says she lost P20M on bad investment. Could it be with Legacy group? And I don’t quite believe that Ted did not know yet the reason before her death. Ted was not stupid to have not known where the money went. Ted is like a showbiz figure. Every act and move he does is being watched by the public. With this in mind, could their relationship be bad for quite a while and that their sweet image was only for the public consumption? There’s a current senator who has another child with his former lovely mestiza staff. In public, he and his celebrity wife pretend nothing’s wrong.

  75. Asianundelight, I was not the one who first mentioned the Indians. Don’t behave and act like those Police goons. I’m not Ted Failon. You’re very childish…and stupid!

  76. Why don’t you tell Mike to stick to the topic? He was right in mentioning the Indians because it was related to the NBI’s participation in the Failon investigation. Next time, try to use your little brain and pick the right kind of argument.

  79. bitchevil,

If your speculation can be proven true then let’s discuss the crime of “accessory to the fact” , proximate cause and but for test.

Rule of Law: If a defendant has LEGAL DUTY TO ACT and deliberately does not act, the failure to act is the evil act for the criminal liability that results. A LEGAL DUTY TO ACT may be created in five ways : 1. by statute 2. by contract 3. by the relationship between the defendant( husband) and the victim ( wife).

A relationship that creates a duty to act is the relationship between husband and wife. Not usre if Philippine law recognizes that husband have an affirmative duty to act for the care and protection of the well being of his wife.

Rule of Law: Failure to ACT

    1. Intentional Failure to act : a husband with a legal duty to act who fails to act specifically to help and find care for the illness of his wife can be charged with a specific intent crime, whether the results occurs or not.

    2. Willful Failure to ACT: A husband with a legal duty to act who willfully fails to ACT (to help and seek medical care or counseling for the wife ) but without intending to cause any specific harm, can be charged with a general intent especially f the offense has been completed.

Interestingly, our laws in our country sucks. But something to think about…. I am still giving the husband the “benefit of the doubts. ” He is still presumed innocence.

  80. Asianundelight, I was not the one who first mentioned the Indians. Don’t behave and act like those Police goons. I’m not Ted Failon. You’re very childish…and stupid! Next time, try to use your little brain and pick the right kind of argument.

    BE, asiandelight,

Sorry if what I posted above is OT but the reason why I mentioned the Vizconde case is because it has some similarity to the case of Failon. It has the same payback mode that the NBI did to Webb vis-a-vis what the QCPD is doing to Failon.

  83. .38 gun on suicide?

Law of Physics would have require the bullet to hit one of the bathroom walls and then ricochet before settling into an area. A .38 caliber gun fired at close range at someone’s head would exit to the other side of the head. In a small space such as a bathroom, the law of physics will apply – a wall will have an obvious mark. Granting that the maids cleaned the bathroom, there’s no way they can retouch and repaint the wall in so short of time. The absent of a ricochet mark can be concluded that the shooting did not take place in the bathroom.

The ricochet mark inside the bathroom can be sufficient to keep the family from custody. Obstruction of Justice can be concluded that without the ricochet mark, then cleaning of the bathroom will not make sense and someone is hiding information. Is there a ricochet mark somewhere and how is the mark related to the height of the victim and her initial positioning?

    On .38 caliber :

There’s the matter of his wife being able to fire the Walther. It has a long trigger pull and a long barrel. She would need to have extensive firing range experience in using the Walther for her have fired it accurately.

She would’ve needed to cock the Walther to chamber load, get the safety off and then fire at her left temple.

Assuming this was the case, the slug would’ve gone through her skull so this would mean the slug should’ve ricocheted off the bathroom walls, several times, given the speed that it was traveling. Where then is the slug?

The gunshot should’ve reverberated throughout the house because she was in confined environment. You have to remember that a handgun makes a considerable amount of noise which is the reason why people who do target or combat shooting always wear ear protectors when they’re at the firing range which is an open space.

It would be worth to verify to also how many firearms Failon has registered with the PNP FEU for ballistic tests to be performed on each firearm to determine if the Walther was really the gun used.

again, our constitution has guaranteed all of us the presumption of innocence.

  90. Ted Failon said his gun was licensed but did not have the permit to carry. For a hard hitting radio and TV commentator like him, it would be logical to expect that he carries his gun outside of his residence for protection. Certainly, the kind of work he has makes him the target of enemies and criminal elements.

The question as to how many guns he kept is a good one. One who is a gun enthusiast and goes to firing range usually owns more than one gun.

Where was the victim’s cloth at the time of her death? It was changed. Where is it right now?

Whether she killed herself or was shot by someone, why did no one hear the gun shot?

When other witnesses were interviewed and asked about the letter where the word “po” was used even to a husband, they all said that was a common word being used by the Failon family. If this is so, why did Ted give a different reason explaining that the word was not “po” but “pa” referring to him?

Let’s all agree that a crime sometimes happens unexpectedly and regrettably during the heat of argument and extreme anger. Even the most decent and kindest person could commit the crime at the spur of the moment failing to control especially when provoked.

Despite all the above points I have raised, I still believe in Ted’s innocence until he’s proven guilty.

  91. bitchevil,

Although the police ruled it a suicide,Ted Failon is not off the hook yet, the police may not find any sufficient evidence to indict him for the death of his wife, they can charge him of obstruction of justice for tampering with evidence with the specific intent of distorting the results of any criminal investigation or proceeding which may reasonably prove relevant to a criminal investigation or proceeding. Tampering with evidence shall include the intentional alteration, movement, removal, or addition of any object or substance either.

  92. Asiandelight

Why do I think Ted Failon’s wife did NOT kill herself? Call me crazy or accuse me of having a wild imagination (it can be out there at times) but I think she was killed and it was set-up to look like a suicide. Too much TV/movies? Maybe…but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.

On the other hand, if this woman was murdered as many of the commentators suspect, naming the men involved would have removed the motive for murder.

If i were her and I was planning my suicide, I would go to Malacanang strapped 10 pounds of TNT on my belly after I released all the dirt to the media and shoot myself up in fireworks.I would not go to the back of some shed and locked myself in a bathroom and hope no one found me and my suicide note.

  93. I do not conclude either that Ted Failon has something to do with the murder of his wife because there’s no concrete evidence to point the middle finger at him.

  94. Being a fan of Ted Failon does not erase the fact that he could be a possible suspect. Ted has been in the media for several years. He covered crime and police reports on a daily basis. He has spoken to a lot of lawyers, politicians and law enforcers. Preserving the crime scene and not cleaning up the blood before investigation is so basic. Common sense says that if the blood which is part of the evidence is cleaned, it’s hiding something from the authorities. Even though people have the tendency to speculate on such a high profiled crime, we must look at all angles.

“When his wife died, Ted Failon’s two daughters were crying but he appeared to be emotionless and not crying.”

Anyone undergoing such stress, palagay ko, would have the same look in his face. I won’t understand it if Ted had to deal with grief and grief alone. Kaya lang, in his case, he would also have to deal with anger, especially, with the way the PNP ‘invited’ him and the rest of the household.

On the other hand, if we saw him crying like a child, won’t we say he’s merely acting?

  103. MrG MrG

Who really cares what impressions are brought across by media exposure involving sensational events. Whether its a congressional investigation or any high visibility event, people always try to play up to media. After that they make the announcement that they are running for a government position. Election to any position from President to Barangay Councilman needs media exposure to win an election. I won’t be surprised if like Bolante, one of those dismissed policemen would announce his candidacy for Barangay captain! The cops were just aping politicians when they’re conscious that media is around and that the cameras are rolling.

  104. Gene Gene

para sa akin, the mistake the police made was (1) the “arrests” were really harsh and unprofessional. (2) They should have waited for the whole thing to subside and wait till the burial or recovery of the victim, if possible, before questioning them separately and individualy.

But despite the lapses the police made, the lapses made by Failon and his family members and household helpers were graver and raise more questions than answers. The cleaning of the crime scene just because they don’t want to let the younger daughter see the blood was “too convenient” as an alibi. Their inconsistencies in their statements were also suspect. And finally, Failon, being a reporter and familiar to such reportage and police procedure behaved completely different thus, making his bahavior of the whole drama even more suspect.

But, as I said, all of my information were based on media reports which are mostly second hand information. Plus the fact that they tend to senstionalise the whole thing makes it even more difficult for us to analyse it dispassionately. Unless, of course, that was their real purpose by not allowing us to have a clear picture. Just look at the politicians commenting on this tragedy makes me puke! They have no souls at all. Feasting on the dead was really an act of a person without a heart.

To the wife, all I can say is this: If its really a suicide, why? now you have put your whole family into further despair and mourning. And if its a murder, may justice be done, even it seems your whole family doesn’t want to give you that.

  105. Gene Gene

Alot of us based our opinions on emotions and not on careful analysis. Some say that since the whole family declared it as a suicide, the police must accept it as it is. BUT, a family declaring it a suicide is not an evidence. If we have a police force that would make an investigation and make judgements based on family’s sentiments is not a good police force.

If I’m a millonaire or a billionaire and I know my family members were dying to have the money by hook or by crook, then I’m in deep sh*t. And if I’m a person who knows that one day I would be killed by a family member who can seduce other family members of making me a bad guy, then I’ll be also in deep sh*t. Because the police would just make their invastigations based on emotions and not hard evidence.

  106. Bringing the wife to the hospital doesn’t mean he’s not guilty. It’s a good cover up and argument. Report is now roaming that the household members were instructed by Ted not to say anything. Ted was a law student and once a police beat reporter. He knew it was wrong to alter the crime scene.
As of this writing, he has not surrendered to the Police his wife’s cell phone to prove that he called her minutes before the alleged suicide. At any rate, I still maintain that a person is innocent until proven guilty.

The fact that the crime scene was cleaned up, whoever the criminal is, he/she would have washed his/her hands to remove all the powder residues from his/her hands. It is also very difficult to reconstruct the crime with no evidences.

Cocoy is right. It is only when the witness runs out of money that this whole thing will unravel, if indeed it was murder. Unless of course, the witness will be silenced. It is so easy to pay a hitman in the Philippines!

If this was murder, the villain must have thought of all the necessary “clean-up” so it will look like suicide. A crime is a crime and no matter how one hides the truth, there will always be a minor slip up and the truth prevails.

If this is murder, multuhin sana sila ni Trina! Kung suicide naman ito, let us leave the grieving family alone.

  108. At this point, it’s all speculation. We’re not 100% certain that it was a suicide. Ted is not off the hook yet. As I said, even the nicest person commits mistake…including crime.

  109. Brainless arguments.

Why would your maids not clean up if they are positive your wife committed suicide in your daughter’s bathroom complete with a suicide note? On the other hand, If no one saw me cut myself in the neck while shaving and I later died in the hospital, would my wife be immediately charged with obstruction if she ordered my maids to clean up?

The position of the dropped gun is immaterial. A gun dropped by the left hand may bounce to the right. Also, unless evidence is provided that shows she regularly shoots with either hand, the gun’s position doesn’t matter. Or since the wife was alive, she could have moved.

Why would I be required to report my wife’s shooting immediately to the cops when she’s still fighting for her life? Shouldn’t I be attending to her first and foremost?

It’s funny how some “experts” here are now thinking like the stupid cops.

  110. As to the maids not talking to cops, I would also instruct my maids to avoid doing so. Cops are notorious liars, they use intimidation and capitalize on witnesses’ weaknesses and cherry-pick statements to bolster their hypothesis. I wouldn’t want a careless and overly-assuming maid to foul up the truth by volunteering false info if only to stay safe. You know the cop’s techniques. She can talk only with a lawyer assisting her.
