Harry Roque elected to Council of the International Criminal Bar

harry-roque.jpgUniversity of the Philippines College of Law Professor Herminio Harry L. Roque Jr. has been elected to the Council of the International Criminal Bar, which acts as representative of counsel to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Prof. Roque is the first Asian to have been elected to as an individual counsel to the governing body of the The Hague-based six-year old international lawyersʼ organization.

Prof. Roque, also the first Asian to be admitted as a member of the ICB, will serve a four year-term, beginning December 2007 following his election last Monday, July 22, 2008.

Members of the ICB Council come from all five continents and represent all of the worldʼs legal systems. ICB draws its membership from national and regional Bars, the largest international organizations of counsel, as well as lawyers who are deeply involved in the development of international criminal law.

The ICB was founded at a conference in Montreal, Canada, on June 15, 2002, attended by more than 350 lawyers, representatives of international, regional and national Bars, Law Societies, associations of counsel and non-governmental organizations from 48 countries.

Its creation was a response to the need to create an organization for counsel at the ICC and is based on the principle that it is necessary to have an independent and united voice for counsel appearing before the new Court.

Prof. Roque is chair of the Center for International Law (CENTERLAW), a Manila-based NGO dedicated to the promotion of the Rule of Law in the Philippines and Asia through international law, and a member of the panel of experts for the Philippine Coalition for the International Criminal Court (PCICC).

He will serve in the ICB board with international lawyers Jean Flamme (Belgium), Virginia Lindsay (Ireland), Marie-Pierre Poulain (France), Wolfgang Ferner (Germany) and Roxame Helme (Canada).

Most deserving! We badly need people like Harry. Now, he is in better authority to run after the crooks in Malacanang. Congratulation Harry!

  2. Chabeli Chabeli

OFF TOPIC: ****** My Personal Observation Only ********

I could not help but notice a significant drop of bloggers posting comments on this site. Why? It seems like this blog is out of sync. Out of sync in what ways? The burning topic right now is about the ARMM polls freeze and what does it means from the Tribune. And what do we have here in this blog? It’s about Harry Roque. I don’t want to laugh but hehehe. Will a blogger bent his frustrations about Harry Roque or about the burning topic of ARMM?

I know that the owner of this blog is a writer of Malaya and maybe don’t want to follow the lead of Tribune. But no one can ignore Tribune. Why? It is the most well known newspaper that reports news without fear or favor compare to Malaya or any papers exposing criminals ways of Pidal gangsters.

Maybe a combination of Tribune and Malaya topics for the bloggers to bent on their frustrations is the best strategy for this blog or any type of strategy than the current out of sync strategy.

If this blog continue in it’s current path what do you think will happen to this blog?

  5. bitchevil bitchevil

Xman, I resent your above comment about this blog. Atty. Roque’s election to the International Court is relevant to today’s events in the Philippines. Harry is a hard working advocate of justice. He’s fighting corruption and evil of this GMA government. Of course the ARMM topic is as important. It would be discussed sooner or later. Isn’t the North Rail project also important and the coming SONA?

  6. BOB BOB

Congrats ! Atty.

  7. Ellen,

Absolutely fabulous news! Just smashing! Hooray for Atty Roque.

  8. I hope when Gloria is finally accused of crimes against humanity, i.e., human rights violations, extra-judicial murders, corruption, etc., Atty Roque will refuse to act as counsel if ever she has the thick facedness to ask for him.

  9. AdeBrux,
On the other hand, I WOULD advise Harry to lawyer for Gloria in that case. Of course, you know what I mean, heheh.

Kita nyo, pati santo, kamag-anak!

  10. xman,
We, as commenters, do not dictate what a blogger should discuss in his/her blog. But you are right, the ARMM elections is as important but over here in Ellen’s, we have a special bonding with Atty. Roque, who blogs here once in a while and sends his press releases through Ellen before we even read them in the other news/blog sites.

We consider Atty. Harry as an Ellenville resident.

  11. Congrats to Atty. Roque! Glad to see him there. Now, we can be sure that the cases filed there at the ICC/ICJ will be looked into. Mabuhay ka, Atty! You can bet your bottom dollar, we will support you!

  12. What will happen to this blog? It will be as popular as ever, that’s what.

Tanong lang sa iyo, xman, what’s your purpose posting the above message? Are you one with us or are you one of those sent to blogs like this in a vain attempt to make it insignificant because it is just annoyingly and alarmingly popular for the squatters at the palace by the murky river, for the truth is that the ARMM thing in fact is discussed in another loop.

  13. Tongue,

He cannot lawyer for the creep. He is, I guess, going to be more like a counsel for the prosecutor than a counsel for the scoundrels. Tama ka, lagot si Gloria Dorobo ngayon.

Aside from the case filed by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Philippines re the extrajudicial killings last year, there was also the case filed by the International Criminal Tribunal for Iraq that found the Pandack Omama guilty of connivance with Bush, Blair and even Japan’s Koizumi, who is not going to be spared likewise once the ICJ starts investigating on the crimes committed by the Americans under Bush in Iraq for his haughty remarks then that Bush could never be wrong about Saddam and his connection with the 9/11 attack and the Al Qaeda that the Americans now admit is not true.

Ang yabang pa ni Koizumi noon as a matter of fact. But wait till you hear of him committing harakiri once his connivance with Bush is exposed and he has to be called to the ICJ hearing on Iraq. At least, meron kaming culture of self-destruction na ganyan. Sa Pilipinas, pakapalan ng mukha. Ang sagwa! And the only way to get rid of the bugaw at the palace by the murky river is to pull her by the hair, drag her out of the palace, and do as Anna has recommended, “hang her high from a lamppost!”

Ex-ICJ Judge Romy Capulong was in fact a prosecutor in that international criminal tribunal with hearings held in Japan and the US. Wala nang lulusutan si dorobo, et al.

Congrats, Idol!

  15. Golberg Golberg

    Congratulations Prof. Roque!!!

Lalo sigurong namutla si Joc-Joc dahil dito. Pati yung peke namutla na rin. Hehehehehehehehhehehe! Siguradong merong pendungan na mangyayari! Unahan na lang sa pag-pendong kay Joc-Joc. 🙂

We could just imagine the envy of Miriam Santiago…Harry got it without being endorsed by Malacanang.

  17. xman (so does this mean girl ka na ngayon, hindi ka na man eh)…
Personally, I don’t believe blogs are the best means to push political changes precisely because you can’t get all the bloggers to commit to act on a particular cause anyway, but bloggers make you think, see issues from different perspectives, digest current issues, things which eventually help you make a decision when the time comes.
You’ll be surprised that the bloggers here have diverse interests and actually have lives even beyond political issues. As it says beneath the blog title – making life worth living…if you were here last December we even talked about classical music.
Fewer bloggers don’t necessarily mean less interest, its just that the majority of the bloggers here have so much work to do, day jobs, businesses to run, second jobs, side lines, a life, etc. Of course there are some professional bloggers, or people who do nothing but blog all day (as they are paid to do so), but you won’t find them here.

  18. You know, I saw Harry Roque once, we were on the same flight from Cebu last year. I recognized him from the TV and newspapers. I wanted to intoduce myself but I hesitated, I guess I lost that opportunity to meet a great man huh?
I hope Ellen one of these days you’ll allow me to tag along when you’re meeting him…

  19. Jug,

I blog in between jobs. I can even blog on the train just like when I go to a translation job outside of Tokyo and take a long train trip.

I use a wireless (DSL pa) and allows me to blog non-stop and unlimited. It’s a good way to while away the time if I cannot sleep (take a nap), better than reading a book nowadays.

Blogging in Ellenville can be fulfilling as a matter of fact especially when we see the result of our efforts as when we promoted the candidacy of Senator Trillanes, and he won. It has proved to me that sans the paid detractors, majority of bloggers here are one in thought and spirit that is why they are strong, in fact, a force that cannot be ignored!!!

    OK, Jug? Give me five!!!

Hindi lahat na nagbabasa rito ang nagku-vomment. Ako, araw-araw ako nagbabasa dito. Naging habit na but I just comment from time to time.

But you have no right mamintas ng choice of topic niya. Blog niya ito.

  21. Oks na oks grizzy! Gabriela’s right, I read this blog everyday too but I don’t comment as much as I want to. Most of the time, just reading the comments here is enough to keep me going…

With all our comments against him, I think he would return as xgay.

  26. chi chi

Wow! Congrats Atty. Harry Roque! You deserve every bit of that honor.

Huwag mo kaming kalilimutan sa Ellenville ha? 🙂

  27. chi chi

Harry. 🙂

We could just imagine the envy of Miriam Santiago…Harry got it without being endorsed by Malacanang. – bitchevil

Talaga! And the Malacanang illegal occupant unana is having tantrums over this wonderful news.

  29. rose rose

The only problem with bloging here is Pandak and her cadre of spies know how we think and what is our next move. As desperate as she is about power, she will do everything to curtail us from exposing her. Blessed is the man who invented the blog and the internet (not Al Gore). During the time of Marcos we have no blogs that is why Marcos stayed in power for 26 years. Sad to say that the people who are after Marcos money is Pandak. As far as I am concerned the beneficiary of Marcos wealth should be the Filipinos and not the Swiss or German Banks.

  31. X-man,thanks for being concerned what’s going to happen to this blog.

As you can see in my blog profile in my own small way I’d like to contribute to “strengthening of democracy and making life worth living.”

Every topic posted in this blog adheres to that philosophy.

  32. chi chi

    Rose,

  33. Exactly – “making life worth living”.

I can’t even imagine my life after Gloria is gone. Napakalungkot siguro, hehehe!

  34. bitchevil bitchevil

We can be concerned with the blog without being critical. Every topic posted was relevant to today’s political and economic events, directly or indirectly.

  35. chi chi

    Tongue,

I was thinking along your line.

  36. chi chi

Hope there would be another one like the U-nana!

  37. chi chi

Oy, ang tagal kong napansin…dapat ay “hope there would be NO other one like the U-nana in the future”.

  38. chi chi

Oy, ang tagal kong hindi napansin. Should be “Hope there would be NO other one like the U-nana in the future”.

Sori, wala ako sa bahay at hindi kaagad nakabalik-basa.

  39. chi chi

O, nadoble naman. Kasi ay hindi nakapasok noong una. Eskierda muna ule. Huh, may multo ni Pandack O’mama!

  40. xman xman

Ellen, thanks that you saw my concern about this blog. Apparently, other posters did not see it that way. Maybe I should have used a softer language so as not to misinterpret my message or added some clarifications with it.

My comments was meant as a constructive critique and not to dictate. Sending you email is the other alternative.

Your contributions are appreciated by many, including me.

    All the best,
    xman

  41. xman xman

    My comments were meant….

  42. bitchevil bitchevil

Xman, I apologize if I first took note of your comment. My reply resulted in others misinterpreting your comment. FYI, this blog is one of the most democratic blogs. Some were clearly sent by Malacanang here to cause trouble and yet, they were allowed to say their piece.

  43. xman,
Same here…I apologize for my reaction earlier… (:

  44. xman xman

Bitchevil and Juggernaut, there is nothing to apologize because I am partly to blame for not making it clear enough. I am cool with fellow bloggers except those on the darkside, midget’s bloggers.

Tongue, thanks for your explanatory comments about Atty. Harry Roque. I am fairly new in this blog that’s why I don’t know him.
