The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is looking into the case of Senator Antonio F. Trillanes IV.
During the 122nd Session of the IPU’s Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarians held last week in Geneva, Switzerland, the Committee heard the case filed by Senators Panfilo “Ping” Lacson and Ana Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal last year in behalf of Senator Trillanes. In their
letter-complaint dated 25 March 2007, Lacson and Madrigal condemned the fact that the Philippine gvernment has been preventing Trillanes from attending Senate sessions and from performing his duties as a Senator despite being elected by more than 11 million voters and
despite of Senate Resolution urging the executive and the courts to allow Trillanes to serve and to attend Senate sessions.
The Committee, presided over by Senator Sharon Carstairs of Canada, first heard the side of the Philippine Government represented by Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Erlinda Basilio, after which it heard lawyer Reynaldo Robles, who attended the hearing as Trillanes’ representative.
On the last day of the Session, the Committee is expected to deliberate on whether or not to formally admit the complaints filed before it and to recommend appropriate action to the
IPU’s governing body.
Senate Minority Leader Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel who is a member of the Committee was present although he did not participate in the proceedings relating to the case of Trillanes. Under the rules of the Committee, a committee member from one country is not allowed to participate in cases involving members from the same country.
Upon his return to the country last Saturday, Robles said that he is very confident the Committee will admit Trillanes’ case.
Robles stated that the Committee appeared to be very interested in the manner the government is trying to prevent Trillanes from performing his duties by refusing to allow him to attend Senate sessions, preventing his colleagues, his Senate staff and constituents
from visiting him at his place of detention as well as completely banning the media from having access to the Senator.
The IPU is the official international organization of the Parliaments the world’s sovereign states. It was established in 1889 and is currently based in Geneva, Switzerland. The Union is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-
operation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy. A hundred-fifty national parliaments are currently members of the IPU.
Ping and Jamby,
Thanks very much. I can assure you of my/family’s wholehearted support.
Ipahiya si Gloria sa mundo through IPU! Oopps, walanghiya nga pala ang Pandack O’mama!
Unfortunately, not during this Evil Bitch’s term. Trillanes may be able to serve after the Bitch is gone. By then, he would have already wasted many years of his Senate position. Trillanes would have performed a lot better as a Senator than those idiots like Lito Lapid.
Ayan na!
Good that the case of Trillanes is now being taken up by the IPU, but the problem is will Gloria Dorobo honor and respect the decision of IPU? I don’t think so unless, of course, the IPU recommend an international sanction with creditors being told to stop lending money to the dorobo. Tignan natin ang tigas niya when that happens!
They should adopt this kind of procedure in the Philippines, and prohibit all Arroyo’s appointees, especially those in the Supreme Court from voting on issues involving her. Then, maybe, they’ll be able to remove crooks like her without relying too much on US help even when the Americans cannot be relied upon for that kind of help because of the numerous problems the US is facing at the moment.
This probably will stop likewise the Commision on Appointments from confirming political appointees to give the democratic process a better chance to work in the Philippines.
Anyway, let’s hope and pray that IPU can help free Senator Trillanes to allow him to serve his country and people better. Lagot na si Gloria! Yehey!
Kakabakaba na seguro ang diddib niya sa pagiisip kung ano ang kanyang gagawin..she is not afraid of anything..kahit na nga sa Diyos wala siyang takot..pero the suspense might just kill her..she is not in control of IPU..she maybe out of office by the time IPU decides but she would be more afraid of this kung wala na siya sa puesto…ito na seguro ang magpabilis ng kanyang pagalis…run Gloria run..IPU is on your way…takbo at madulas ka sana sa pagtakbo!
This is a good quote from Benjamin Franklin:
“They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security.”
Tongue, what do you mean “Ayan na!”
I hope IOU generates enough international support to pressure the Supreme Court to reverse its decision.
But then I have my doubts with the Supreme Court. The only hope of Sen. Trillanes is really for Gloria Arroyo to be ousted.
I don’t know what the people are waiting for.
IPU, not IOU. Sorry.
Gabriela:
Kung ayaw nilang kumilos, they deserve what they get. Magandang chance nga iyong SONA to show their disgust and disapproval of the Commander in Cheat.
BTW, guys, CNN just reported that the people of San Francisco are petitioning the sewerage plant there to be named after George W. Bush. Kundi iyan gaga, ano iyan? 😛 Akala niya kasi siga-siga na siya!

Ellen,
Sorry for the double posting. I don’t know what happened. Just to save on space.
I for one also don’t agree our international airport being named after the late Ninoy Aquino. It has to return to the old name “Manila International Airport”. If the reason for using his name is because he’s a hero and martyr, what about Dr. Jose Rizal and other Filipino heroes? Jose Rizal Airport would have been better…
BD: It has to return to the old name “Manila International Airport”.
******
I second the motion.
Administrator Tirso G. Serrano sa video ng Inquirer.net: “We have difficulty in forging contracts with concessionaires for the shopping center…”
Greetings!
Thank God. As I said b4 the Truth will prevail. Our voice will be heard. We are 11 million voters for the Great senator that was put to jail by the Evil Lady residing in malacanang. The end is near and here is the final curtain. Our Senator will serve whether they like it or not. I am calling the 11 million to consolidate and bring our voice to international committee to support our heroes.
Thanx
Polly
