Ngayon lumalabas ang mga statistics na nakakabahala. Inilabas ng National Statistics Office ang kanilang survey sa araw-araw na pamumuhay at lumabas na noong buwan ng Mayo ang inflation rate ay 9.6 percent. Ito na ang pinakamataas sa mga nakaraang sampung taon.
Ang inflation ay ang pagtaas ng mga bilihin at ang pagbaba ng halaga ng pera.
Ngayon ang statistics ng NSO ay malapit sa laman ng tiyan ng taumbayan hindi katulad noon na panay magandang statistics ang pinapalabas katulad ng 7 percent na growth rate. Kaya tuloy pinaglalandakan ni Gloria Arroyo sa kanyang mga placards sa buong bansa “Ramdam na ramdam ang kaunlaran.”
Ulol. Ramdam na ramdam ang kahirapan.
Sinabi ng NSO tumaas ang presyo ng mga bilihin noong April mula 12 per cent hanggang 14.3 percent. Ang bigas lang, mula April na 24.6 per cent , tumaas ng 31.7 per cent.
Sabi nga ng aming mga kapitabahay, “Matagal na naming alam yan. Matagal na naming ramdam na ramdam yan.”
Ngunit mabuti naman inilabas na rin ng NSO itong mga statistics para na rin sampal sa mukha ni Arroyo na naturingang ekonomista kuno.
Sabi ng totoong economista sa Asian Development Bank, sa bawat 10 porsiyento na pagtaas ng inflation, 2.3 million na Filipino ang nalulugmok pa lalo sa kahirapan. Dagdag yan sa 30 porsiyento o halos 30 milyon na Filipino na matagal nang baon sa kahirapan.
Ano ngayon masasabi mga magagaling na managers ng ating bansa sa Malacañang? Huwag raw mag-alala.Sabi ni Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye, na lilipat ngayong buwan sa Monetary Board ng Central Bank, ang ating “ macroeconomic fundamentals“ ay malakas at kayang-kaya raw ” to withstand external shock.”
Gusto ko dalhin si Bunye sa squatter area sa gitna ng mahabang pila ng bigas at doon siya magsalita ng mga “macro-economic fundamentals.”
Di ba dati kapag lumakas ang piso laban sa dolyar, pinagyayabang ni Arroyo na yun ay dahil magaling siyang ekonomista kahit na alam natin na yun ay dahil sa mga nangyayari sa labas ng bansa na wala namang kinalaman kay Arroyo. Ngayon ang sinisisi ni Bunye ay “external factors” o mga nangyayari sa labas ng bansa.
Dahil malaki ang kinikita ng Malacañang sa Evat sa gasolina (galing din naman sa ating mamamayan), magbibigay daw ng tulong si Arroyo sa mahihirap katulad ng pagbibigay ng P500 sa mga mahihirap na gumagamit ng kuryente. Minsanan yan ha.

Ngunit halatang ninenerbyos sila. Nagwarning si House Speaker Prospero Nograles sa mga “rabble rousers” o mga naghihikayat sa mga tao na “in control” raw ang pamahalaan sa sitwasyon.

Gloria is an economist. How could she let this happen? What are other factors that might have affect her decision making? Is it because our consumer goods are mostly imported from other countries. Or our interest rates remains low? ( what is it now). This will cause oversupply of money with few goods to buy.

There’s an ongoing bigtime ad campaign here by Meralco explaining systems loss to the people and it looks very innocent when actress Judy Ann Santos declares, “Yan ang legal!” and she also encourages consumers to look closely at their bills. I sense the naughtiness in fact because if the masa will do as Santos suggests, they will see for themselves that it is actually government that is squeezing them dry, by way of generation, transmission and taxes, not Meralco.
They could just have asked Meralco and the other distributors to credit P500 to their under-100KWH customers’ accounts and government just reimburses them for the amount, ensuring that these people get subsidy for which it was intended for, electricity. But no, they had to make pogi points by distributing it themselves, never mind if the people just spend it on tong-its, a case of beer with pulutan, bingo, sakla, lotto, jueteng, sabong or whatever.
That explains why anybody holding a Meralco bill for May gets P500 whether or not it is his or just stolen from his neighbors’ mailbox. You will have to surrender your bill in exchange for the money. That way, no one from the huge class of urban poor and rural middle class will have copies to compare it with Judy Ann’s commercial. They also get a chance to make tong-pats since COA will probably take years to audit two million extra transactions without extra manpower.

Sinabi mo pa. Over in Japan, when there is an increase of rates in our water and electric bills, we get notified first with the needed explanation. They do the same as well when they see it fit to lower the rates that they know the consumers will be grateful to hear. Walang dayaan kasi especially when it is government or even semi-government run for fear of public reprisal.
When the bill gets high in fact, the water or electric power companies notify the consumer and ask why. If the fault is with the consumer then, the consumer is duly billed. If the fault is on the water or power company such as when it is caused by faulty meters, then the consumer does not even billed at all.
Over in the Philippines, lahat kasi nagdadayaan kung makakalusot. Kaya nga when Ka Bel and he was telling us he was not paying his electric bill unless the Meralco explains why he should get such high bill, I was kind of shock. Hindi ako makatawa. Gusto ko man siyang kampihan, hindi ko kasi alam kung sino talaga ang may deperensiya, kaya nag-play neutral na lang ako. Galit kasi ako sa kahit na anong klase ng truancy kaya sa totoo lang masinop at makulit ako when it comes to paying my bills. I do my duties as a dutiful and law-abiding citizen, kaya malakas ang loob kong magdemand ng first class serbisyo sa mga kinauukulan I expect to serve me well as a consumer or a taxpayer. Sabi nga, “It takes two to tango.” Give and take kung gusto ninyong mabuhay na mahusay.

I am seriously interested on what you can discuss about economics. To me, economics is only a word people use to describe what they dont understand. I dont complain of the bad situation that people think we are in for its not true all. I dont care if the next guy eat more than I do, gets better pay, get all the beautiful girls around. I dont mind what the NSO says. Or the president says. I stop ordering beer when I dont have the money, I steal sometimes, I prefer to help myself first always. And I am the father of perpetual help. I even stop blaming god now for punishing us, I can forgive the lord on that. I am glad I am an Ilocano for I can stretch my life yet with what the malunggay tree on our fence can give me before my neighbors reap the new leaves away.

Asian delight, am not an economist like the President, who always says and I quote ” being and Economist” but the main cause of inflation is the Poor Economy. The Price of Oil may have contributed and so is the price of staples,rice and other food stuffs, but if the economy was not that bad in the first place it will have have some cushions to absorb the surge. I believe it was mismanaged, there was no monies in the till, where there were supposed to be (where were they gone??), and the Government is sooo Impotent, it has no viable programs in place at all to deal with such contingencies..just saying these after the facts..why? because I am not an economist like the President and all her men and women who are supposed to have the expertize..
I was there in the Philippines a couple of months ago and what a shock to me to see rampant poverty and too much corruption and deception from the GMA government. I was trying to compare life in the Philippines against neighboring ASEAN countries I happened to visit pero walang tatalo sa hirap ng Pilipinas.
