From frying pan to worse frying pan

by Gerard Naval

Archbishop Angel Lagdameo yesterday expressed disappointment over the Church’s involvement in ousting Joseph Estrada, a president they perceived to be corrupt, only to replace him with Gloria Arroyo who was tagged the most corrupt president in a recent survey.

“In People Power 1, we were very satisfied with the result,” Lagdameo, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, said when asked if bishops are regretting their participation in Edsa 2.

“The second one, we were somehow disappointed because People Power 2, with the help of the Church, installed a president who later on was judged by surveys as the most corrupt president. That is embarrassing. Yun yung sinasabi ko na parang disappointed… na we went from one frying pan to a worse frying pan,” he said.

Neri described Arroyo as evil

From ABS-CBN Online:

Neri: I cannot recall describing GMA as “evil”.

Rodolfo Noel “Jun” Lozada Jr. on Monday said his friend, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman Romulo Neri, sees President Arroyo as an “evil person.”

“He called Presidente GMA (Gloria Arroyo). She is evil. Evil po,” Lozada said referring to Neri as describing Mrs. Arroyo during a dinner meeting with senators Panfilo “Ping” Lacson and Ma. Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal.

Lozada made the new revelation as he faced for the third time senators at the hearing on the botched $329-million national broadband network (NBN) deal, which he recently said as overpriced by at least $130 million.

Prayers and lessons in English in court martial

It is clear to those who have closely followed the court martial of 28 officers allegedly involved in the February 2006 alleged withdrawal of support from Gloria Arroyo that the panel headed by Maj. Gen. Jogy Fojas is following the prosecution’s script that Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda and his fellow accused officers be arraigned, by hook or by crook, before Feb. 26, 2008.

That’s because if the accused are not arraigned by Tuesday next week, two years from the commission of the alleged offense, the charge of “Conduct Unbecoming of an Officer and Gentleman” (violation of Articles of War 96) would prescribe and the case would be automatically dropped.

The remaining major charge would be mutiny which was recommended to be dismissed by the team from the Judge Advocate Office the investigated the February 26 incident “for lack of factual and legal bases.”

P500,000 shopping money from a Malacañang bureaucrat

Update: Gaite said it’s his personal money that was given to Lozada.

Rodolfo Noel “Jun” Lozada, star witness in the NBN/ZTE scandal, revealed in the televised special of ABS-CBN ,”Harapan” that Deputy Executive Secretary Manuel Gaite gave him P500,000 through his brother while he was in Hongkong.

He said one day,he went on a shopping spree, buying designer items, as an emotional therapy but it didn”t make him feel better.

He said he used his credit card for his Hongkong purchases. He also said he will return the money to Gaite when the Senate hearing resumes on Monday.

In his closing statement Lozada said, “hindi ako ang nagtatanggol sa katotohanan.

SC rules against gov’t threat on airing ‘Garci’ tapes

by Evangeline de Vera

Voting 10-5, the Supreme Court yesterday struck down a warning issued by the Department of Justice and of the National Telecommunications Commission to radio and television stations against airing the alleged wiretapped conversations between President Arroyo and former elections commissioner Virgilio Garcillano.

The high tribunal said the warning, which carried the threat of cancellation of the license of the violator, constitutes prior restraint which infringes on the constitutionally protected freedom of the press.

Thousands converged yesterday at the Ninoy Aquino monument in Makati City to call for President Arroyo’s resignation and prosecution of officials involved in graft and corruption.

They also expressed support for Rodolfo Noel “Jun” Lozada, the Senate’s main witness in its inquiry into the national broadband network project that Arroyo cancelled last year amid allegations of payoffs.

Lozada abduction reaches Malacañang doorstep

by Dennis Gadil

The chief of the Presidential Security Group yesterday said M/Sgt. Bong Fantillanan, one of four PSG men present at the Terminal 1 last Feb. 5 an hour before the arrival of ZTE star witness Rodolfo Lozada Jr., is in their roster.

But Brig. Gen. Romeo Prestoza said Fantillanan had the “mandate” to be at the Terminal 1 as the PSG contingent was anticipating the arrival of Jose Miguel Arroyo the following day.

He said the PSG men were not there for Lozada nor were they involved in the alleged attempt to prevent him from testifying in the Senate.

Break the chain of lies and deceit

This is the message from Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda and 26 other officers (Brig. Gen. Danny Lim is detained in Camp Crame together with Magdalo officers) in detention, now at ISAFP in Camp Aguinaldo, for the February 2006 alleged plan to witndraw support from Gloria Arroyo:

We express our support for truth and justice. As members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines who have sworn to defend the Constitution and protect the Filipino people, we refuse to be cowed into silence and submission by a leadership anchored on thievery and deceit.
