Statement of the Ateneo political science society:
We Must Learn to Love the Truth again
We are outraged by the government’s blatant violation of Rodolo “Jun” Lozada’s human rights and by the deliberate obstruction of justice to conceal the truth behind his disappearance and the ZTE controversy. We decry the desperate attempts of government officials to cover-up its crime. We see this as an obvious manifestation of the increasing mafia-like way the Philippine state is being run under this current administration. We are appalled by the way the government has increasingly been using tactics that impinge upon our rights to privacy and personal security.
We hold President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the PSG culpable for these gross acts of injustice. We demand for their accountability. We want them punished.
But experience tells us that this administration has employed all possible means to prevent the people from holding its officials accountable and will continue to suppress the truth for political survival. Because of the dynamics underlying the Arroyo administration – her questionable legitimacy and her desire to concentrate power in order to avoid prosecution after she steps down in 2010 revealed in the unchecked culture of impunity within the military and among administration allies, we believe that unless Arroyo steps down from office, trust in our democratic institutions will continue to decay.
We therefore call on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to resign. We admit that Arroyo’s resignation is not enough but we believe that this is the first step in the restoration of our faith in our hard-won democracy.
We urge fellow Ateneans in government and public service to follow the heroic example of Rodolfo “Jun” Lozada. We implore them to reveal their knowledge of corruption and abuse of power under the present administration. We call on the Ateneo administration, the alumni association and the student body to join us in our crusade for truth and accountability. In the same way, we disown fellow Ateneans who have forgotten and reneged on their promise to become Lux in Domino – Light in God – and persons for others.
We call for continuing reflection and discernment but we also don’t want to be bystanders as our countrymen begin to come together to defend our deeply shared Filipino values.
Rodolfo “Jun” Lozada has risked his and his family’s life and security because of his patriotism and love for the truth. We are shamed if we don’t do the same.
Lozada is now going to be charged by the Ombudsman for the “overpriced” projects ( eto ba yung mga imported kambing? ) that he admitted to have approved during the Senate questioning of Mirriam …

Health Alliance for Democracy (HEAD), together with concerned physicians and other allied health professionals today joins the growing public outcry against corruption and holds the Arroyo government fully accountable.
Despite the demolition efforts of Malacañang to destroy the credibility of Rodolfo “Jun” Lozano, a vital witness to the multi-million dollar National Broadband Network/NBN-ZTE scam, the Filipino people who stand for truth and accountability will be firmly on his side.
The US$197 million overprice in the $329 NBN-ZTE deal is already enough to cover the medical operation of 15,000 kidney transplant patients (at P600,000 each) and 49,000 open-heart surgeries (at least P200,000.00 each). Yet the amount is supposed to cover only the commission of Chairman Abalos for brokering the deal. The greed of one over the needs of thousands deserves nothing but the most hostile outrage.
HEAD also strongly condemns the abduction and mental torture experienced by Mr. Lozano at the hands of the Philippine National Police. Official kidnapping as a policy of the Arroyo administration demonstrates the extent of what the current dispensation is willing to do to cover-up its hideous acts of unbridled corruption.
HEAD calls on well-meaning government officials and civil servants, including the rank-and-file, to uphold integrity and professionalism above all. HEAD calls on them to follow the example set by Mr. Lozano and reveal what they know of other anomalous, graft-ridden deals that this government has entered into using the people’s money as capital and the people’s lives as collateral.
HEAD is resolved to arrest the sinister acts of the Arroyo regime. In whatever form of mass actions, the people must unite and gather its strength to punish the Arroyo government, which for the last seven years has undermined the people’s interest, plundered the national coffers, and mortgaged the future of this nation.
Many have expressed outrage on the revelations of Mr Lozada. Whether people will take their anger out onto the streets is anybody’s guess. But one thing I often hear is that people want justice to be rendered; if Gloria, Mike Arroyo, Abalos, Mike Defensor, Razon, Atienza, et al, are guilty, then let the ax fall on them. I can’t wait to see the mug shots of these people !
Clearly, what we have here is a showdown between David and Goliaths…
