May naparusahan ba doon?

    TonGuE-in na niya!

In the US pag ang isang ina ay ganyan..ikinukulong kasama ang asawa, o boyfriend, at ang mga kasabwat..Today we catholics celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Blessed Mother loves all of us..and she asks us to pray for peace..Holy Mary pray for us now and forever…

    Hi folks,

I just want to share this good tidings, about a president who violated human rights:

Peru’s Fujimori sentenced to six years for
abuse of power (1 day ago)

LIMA (AFP) — A Peruvian court Tuesday sentenced former president Alberto Fujimori to six years in prison for abusing his powers by ordering an illegal search in the dying days of his 1990-2000 rule.

The punishment — which his lawyer immediately moved to appeal — was handed down in a case heard separately from a trial that opened Monday against Fujimori, 69, for alleged human rights violations.

Ekonomiya natin wala namang trickle down aproach.
Siguro kasi, pati ilong niya, katulad niya?!
    Nyahahahahahahahahahaha! Tagos ba?

More than 20 years ago, the coke on the vendo in Japan was 100 yen. Lately, I got it in the vendo 110 yen despite the 240 yen to the dollar before and 110 yen now. Even the soba, my favorite when my pocket is on diet retained its lowly price. For salary adjustments, we were promoted. Something is very wrong here. Economist nga pero sa kanila lang ang economic boom at kung bakit lagi legislated ang salary increase. bakit di ipromote nalang to get the desired salary increase. That way, price of goods wont follow the legislated increases.

Hehehe!

Had a lunch at my fave Indian resto, the owner is a friend of mine.

He told me that three years ago, he bought a piece of property for $22,000. He sold it last year for $76,000. Nagsisi at hindi raw niya nahintayan this year, the property now commands $220,000 easy. It’s in Bangalore.

Also in Bangalore, a lot of Indians in the tech industry now get $100,000 and more annually. No wonder why Americans are now employed either in India or China.

    Chi,

India is a land of contrasts… ang disparity between rich and poor is malaki… Bangalore, Mumbai, New Delhi and other big cities are where you find most of the affluent ones… but if you go to the suburbs… you will see families working on the ditches; man does the digging and shoveling, wife, with baby at the back, carries the dirt in basket, … all for a daily rate of USD 2.00 … ( first hand experience ito, ha… kasi i went there on a business trip… )

This nation both have a space program and nuclear capability but also have a lot of people living in poverty. But it is true that in the near future, it will become another economic force to reckon with… next to China…

They also have problems with their own politicians but at least their politicians had laid out a master plan on what India is suppose to be in the next decade or so…

To be honest, if we compare Marcos and GMA, … at least si Marcos may vision on how to industrialize the country… mayroon syang pinapatupad na 11-point master plan for industrialization… ito yung hanggang ngayon ang backbone ng mga project sa Pilipinas since Cory… and wala pang nag-update nito since then… baka nga in the future, history will be a lot kinder to Marcos at the rate that our country is being ravaged by GMA… ( o sige para mas “polite” … being ravaged by GMA’s incompetence…. )

That is a “Bubble Economy”

They were, in a way, considered heroes dahil sa sacrifice nila upang mabuhay ang pamilya nila.

Because the House of Representatives has been bribed, and the military top brass stacked with loyalists, she has gotten away with it — so far. The Senate is starting to challenge the Executive, as it should — but slowly, slower than it should. 38. The Failure of this Nation is in Our Hands

India is an old civilization, if we are to measure a nation’s expertise in governance and economic gains in the number of trials and errors through the years, the Philippines is a child compared to India.
I believe we are on our way though, the Philippine economy will move inspite of Gloria and her minions. The private sector will propel our economy forward, even if it means having to pay up extra to line some politicians’ pockets, we’ll just have to work harder, thats all. The OFWs, the BPOs, and the SMEs will usher in an age of a stronger middle class, able to give their children better educations and this next generation of electorate will more discerning and wiser in choosing their leaders. Corruption thrives in ignorance and poverty. What will happen to the “masa” then, the poor farmers, the dwellers of slum areas, the street people? This wide voter base that is perenially used by unscrupulous traditional politicians by taking advantage of their weaknesses will most certainly dwindle in number. Why? They can’t afford food, life saving medicines (congress shelved the cheaper medicines bill), and there is no genuine land reform further culling the biggest employment sector in the country – agriculture, with its massive number of informal employment. Corruption is like a hemmoragic fever virus (ebola), it spreads fast but also kills the host, so isolate, or remove the host, and the virus dies with it.
The people who are actively clamoring for reforms today may or may not succeed in toppling GMA. If we do succeed, what then? What is our direction? Who’s going to step up and lead us? I have grown old fighting, from Marcos, to Erap, and shamefully I also did my part in putting Gloria as President.
What I do see, is a more long term and sweeping way of finally seeing satisfactory changes. Use the democratic processes to our advantage. The administration now appears strong because of their numbers. Why not break up this number? Use divide and conquer, who put these congressmen, governors, mayors, and barangay tanods in power? People voted for them. So now what remains to be done is to identify these officials who betrayed their mandates, list them down, look at their profiles, and use what we learn from this sad experience to choose better leaders.
If government policies are influenced by politicians protecting their own interests, seek out and isolate them. What do we really want? Can we at least come up with a list of things we want in our government? Economic, political, social, what reforms do we aspire to have. If anyone can clearly make a blue print summing up all the reforms we deserve, lets have it.
Although I will always have a bias for some specific sectors, and I will almost always choose to sympathize with them right or wrong, I have been dealing with international business for quite too long to ignore that the country needs to show “stability” and genuine respect for the rule of law. We cannot succeed in the global market if our trade partners fear loosing their investments and we also need to show our trustworthiness, our transparency. We have proven to the world our productivity and propensity to excel in any endeavor. Its time to prove it to our own countrymen that we can win this battle and win without resorting to “scorched earth” policy…

    mag-isip muna bago magkumpara!

  43. Mrivera,

I understand you completely.

    juggernaut,

if there is one thing i did not regret in my decisions, that was opting to stay out from the military service which i find later a better step i have done.

my eyes were opened to the real truth i did not see when i was still wearing my stripes that only began after i took up military courses that involved dealing with the civilians and assigned as trainor in several special operations and tactics training courses.

  45. Mrivera,

You miss the “samahan.” The feeling of complete trust in someone that you can even entrust your life to, something you don’t see in the corporate setting where you have to watch you’re every step. Thats why even if Mindanao is so far away, I make it a point to travel as much as possible. Good thing the banana and pineapple plantations are my customers so I can make a side trip. Of course I have some friends here in Manila also but they are in the PNP and PSG, they are well off compared to the ones in the field but I tend to avoid them as much as possible. Used to be that we meet in National Defense College shooting range in the weekends.

Objectively the question is, how much is government involvment in fixing commodity prices in a free enterprise?
None. United States, the world largest exporter of wheat is having shortage in harvest that resulted to spike in flour prices (the raw material for pandesal). The world price of liquid petroleum gas or LPG (like shellane) runs in line with crude oil. Crude oil per barrel hovers around $90 in 2007 compared to $60 in 2006. The huge jump will have ripples on all prices not only electricity but due to increased cost of delivery. Luckily the actual increase in prices in goods and services did not match the higher oil price increase due to strong Philippine currency (due to OFW remittances) used to buy the oil.

There is strong opinion that without the OFW remittance factor which cushioned the price increases, Trillanes would have been successful when people would have joined and marched to the street to protest what would have been incredible prices (based on 52 instead of 42 exchange).

In essence, Gloria Arroyo is vulnerable NOT on what she does but on what she has no control.

    COMMENT

    12/14/2007

Early morning last Saturday, I heard on radio a live conversation taking place between “Vice President” Noli de Castro and Philippine ambassador to Kuwait Eric Andaya, while “President” GMA was in Europe still undecided to extend her junket to appeal to Emir Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah on behalf of the condemned OFW Marilou Ranario. Mr. Andaya clearly said, “It’s now a done deal. Sufficient blood money has been offered and received, and the emir will spare her life as a matter of course!” De Castro then excitedly replied, “I shall now make the announcement to the Filipino people so that…” “No, no don’t do that Mr. Vice President! President Arroyo will break the news to the nation after she sees the Emir! You know very well she hates being upstaged!”, he butted in. Ambassador Andaya was of course right in reading the presidential mind. Nobody but nobody steals the thunder from Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Ibigay na lang pag 18 year old o kaya 16 year old. 500 pesos is not much compared to the 500,00o pesos na pinabibigay.

React tuloy itong eavesdropper over my shoulder. It can be used regularly and repeatedly even on multiple user. At, nadyan narin ang bisa ng corruption, bribery and other expertise of the Filipino people even at the cost of their lives and pain.

  51. Objectively the question is, how much is government involvment in fixing commodity prices in a free enterprise?

Commodity pricing takes into consideration the different factors of production. In all aspects, the government IS involved. Directly and/or indirectly.

-Manpower: the highly-skilled labor force is siphoned out of industries by the lure of higher paying-jobs abroad. The cost of training and maintaining a company’s workforce may just be a mere 5% of total income but in a highly-competitive industry, such percentage is a hefty one and it could seriously wipe out the bottomline where products have small margins. Government should be involved in productivity enhancement and skills improvement for those who are not qualified or those who chose not to go abroad and take that burden off business who in the long run will keep employing people and pay taxes in return.

-Machinery: Tax and duty-free importation perks including capital equipment are reserved only for newcomers to the detriment of the traditional companies and investors who suffer unfair competition on the entry of johnny-come-latelys. Some end up closing shop. Think Francisco Motors vs. Ford.

-Credit: Banks are not required to prioritize the financial needs of industries. Instead, they buy risk-free government bonds and other securities leaving crumbs to fuel industry growth. Government further complicates the situation by competing with business for the funding its projects.

-Technology: Aside from herbal medicine, and a few biotech and agro-based researches, the DOST is nothing but Sayang and Techno-Huli, as insiders call their agency. Patent applications for inventions are unattended and the stories have the same ending, the patents are approved and bought by neighboring countries, China as the major buyer. Even Dingle’s fuel-from-water “folly”, government making the most boisterous laughter, has been granted patent in China, after DOST dismissed it without even having to test it. Government is also guilty of neglect – our spending for R&D is the lowest in the region while our counterparts hire our engineers to do their R&D. It’s not government’s fault?

-Land: It has been government policy since Marcos’ time to disperse industry outside of the big metros. More than two decades has past and no significant changes have happened. Why, because the ages-old insurrections remain, and will continue to stay until the corrupt military leaders who are coddled by their Chief are all out of service. New investors have no choice but to build their plants in the fringes of the big cities promoting more migration and sprouting of numerous squatter colonies.

-Distribution Channels: The markets are dominated by middlemen who, more often than not, only transport goods from producers to markets. Of the large disparity in prices, almost all contribute to the middleman’s profit. Those who choose the other mode, by importation or integration, have to contend with smugglers who are all protected by government agents themselves. The biggest known protector of smugglers sleeps in the same bed as you-know-who. If the trend continues, and aggravated further by lowering of tariffs, manufacturers may prefer to be mere marketers by simply importing finished products, pay the corresponding bribes and distribute to your stores. This is one sure way to kill the manufacturing industry with all of its workers joining the ranks of the unemployed. Not all of them can be taken in call centers, no?

In conclusion, government is not expected to “fix” commodity pricing, in fact, it should not, but it is primary responsible that commodities are available to all in the right quantities and quality, at the right time for the right value. Its failure to fulfill such basic expectation, over many decades has remain unchanged or has turned from bad to worse.

    juggernaut,

agree. but with the meager salary i was then receiving (even now if still am in the service though i should have retired four years ago) as an enlistedman, i doubt i could send any of my children in college.

i was not able to put up anything for my family during my stay in the service and am not ashamed to say that what i had when i entered the army is what i have when i went out, the clothes i wore. buti nga may brief pa, eh.

sad for my former colleagues because most of them had joined the creator.

sina mgen palparan at col boygee pangilinan lamang yata ang medyo matagal pa bago mamaalam.

  53. Juggernaut, Magno,

I know of officers with as “low” as lt colonel rank who have managed to send their kiddies to the best private schools in Manila notwithstanding their “meagre” salaries.

Many of these officers rose to star rank and have managed to send their kids to medical and law school, provided them with their private vehicles, allowed them to travel, etc.

FVR’s own exec asst during his time was a lowly Air Force major who managed to build a few houses, made his wife and family spend their holidays in the US and in Europe, owned several cars, etc. and live a “rich man’s” life during his tenure with FVR. By the time he retired as colonel, he was already RICH!

Re: Boygee Pangilinan was already into golf and frequent trips to the US, owned a few cars, had 3 houses even as a young lowly 1st lt — he made a lot of money in a few years from the time he served as exec asst to Boy Enrile in PMA to the time Enrile became CGPA and CSAFP…he was in charge of briefcases containing dollars and dollars from which he could easily dip his finger, and of course Boygee was tasked with executing command decision “TO PRODUCE!”

(Enrile by the way owned 3 brand new Mercedes Benz when he was CSAFP — something unthinkable but true!)

Most of these officers were poor before they entered the service but many have become wealthy as they rose through the ranks.

That’s why I admire Gen Lim who chose not to be corrupted.

  55. In the course of my dealings with the AFP for years, I have met and known of only ONE top ranking officer (from an array of major service commanders and star ranking officers) who has not been blatantly corrupt, i.e., refusing to accept bribe money from local agents, dealers or fixers …

The conclusion did not explain the increase in prices which is the contention of hirap ng buhay. There is adequate supply of pandesal, shellane and electricity in the country.

The idealist PMAers have left the service. I knew one who is PolSci professor at Harvard University. The police/military runs the lucrative illegal jueteng and logging operations on top of license/permit (tong) on all cargo trucks (foods to spare parts) plying from one province to another. The navy/coast guard runs the blackmarket operation in the south. Plus standard commission on all government purchases where the comptroller is a service officer. As an example, the US court made Senator Lacson pay an american citizen on the amount that the senator withheld as tong over police contract while he was in PNP. Or the US customs seizure of 2 briefcases of dollars put General Garcia on the court martial plate. It is not surprising to know that ex-service officers are having lavish spending in the US courtesy of Filipino’s money.
