I had a long-scheduled lecture at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines on “Online journalism versus print journalism” last Saturday but the students were more interested about last Thursday’s incident at the Manila Peninsula, specially the part when media became suspects for covering the event.
Since the students were post-Marcos babies, I contextualized the deplorable action of the PNP with the situation during the Marcos dictatorship.
The Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility put it eloquently: “Never in the turbulent recent history of the Philippines has any government, including that of Ferdinand Marcos, ever taken into custody members of the media who were on the scene to do their jobs.”
That’s true. I have been a reporter since the Marcos days and have been tear-gassed a number of times during student rallies but never was I brought for questioning and threatened with being handcuffed for doing my job.
CMFR said: “The arrest of the media people who were covering the take-over of the Peninsula Hotel by Senator Antonio Trillanes’ Magdalo group is not only unprecedented. It is also an outrage, and a telling indication of the authoritarian depths into which the Arroyo regime has fallen in its obsession with political dominance. The Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility condemns this latest attack on the Philippine press as an assault not only on its constitutionally-protected freedom, but also on democracy itself.”
Gloria Arroyo and her minions (I’m so disappointed with PNP Chief Avelino Razon; he had impressed me as a more enlightened police officer) accuse us of “obstructing justice” when we decided to stay put at the hotel. I ask them, did reporters block the path of the fully-armed, fully-masked members of the Special Action Force when they took away Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, Brig. Gen. Danny Lim, and the other Magdalo officers? What obstruction of justice are they talking about?
I decided to stay put in the hotel despite the warning by authorities that they would mount an assault to get the rebel officers because as a journalist my duty is to inform the people as correctly as I could of the unfolding crisis. And I believe that the best and only way I could do it was by being at the Manila Pen where Trillanes, Lim and the other Magdalo soldiers were.
NCR police chief Geary Barias offered a place where reporters could wait for briefing. Why would I allow somebody as partisan as Barias to process for me the information I needed about his enemy target?
Barias betrays the mentality of this government treating media as an extension of its propaganda arm. Those who refuse are considered the enemy.
A friend told me that Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno, who was reported to be the one calling the shots in last Thursday’s overkill, announced on TV that from now on, only reporters assigned to a specific beat could cover a specific event.
Hello? Since when has government taken over the editorial duties of news organizations? Beat assignments are internal matters for a media organization. A government official has no business meddling with it. An editor can send a reporter to any event and it’s none of Puno’s business.
All the 30 or so journalists who stayed put at the Manila Pen knew the risks involved. That’s why none of us complained that we were tear-gassed. We tried to protect ourselves from the stinging fumes with wet pieces from the Manila Pen’s linen. It helped but it was really bad. But we did not take that against the authorities. They had to do their job.
During Marcos’ time, every time we covered rallies, we knew we would be tear-gassed like everybody else. That didn’t prevent us from covering those activities. That’s part of the job.
What we object to is to be prevented from doing our job. Last Thursday, that’s what Gloria Arroyo’s minions tried to do with us. For standing firm on our constitutional right of freedom of expression, we were arrested and threatened with being handcuffed like common criminals.
Arroyo is fond of invoking “rule of law.” From the very day she grabbed power in 2001, to her thwarting the will of the people in the 2004 elections, the list of her violations of the law is getting longer than the graft-ridden boulevard named after her father. Last Thursday’s trampling of the rights of journalists is the latest item in the list.
A military official said the prevailing sentiment among Arroyo’s loyalist police and soldiers who watched last Thursday’s incident is that if media continues to be stubborn, they should be prepared to be shot next time.
I’m not exactly shocked by that attitude given the culture of impunity that Arroyo has cultivated under her administration. They see media as an enemy that would expose their destruction of democratic institutions. It is beyond them to appreciate the role of media of empowering the people by delivering accurate information.

There can be no argument that as an opinion columnist and writer, Ellen, you did your moral duty to be an eyewitness in a particular event of Philippine history.
The police and military top dogs of Gloria’s government, let alone her mouthpieces are not to be trusted…
How else can those of us, the majority of interested Filipinos who are nowhere near the scene of the fight against Gloria’s corruption know what is going on? At that particular moment, we can only be thankful that you courageously put your life on the line so that we, the Filipinos are informed.
Ellen,
Re Puno: A friend told me that Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno, who was reported to be the one calling the shots in last Thursday’s overkill, announced on TV that from now on, only reporters assigned to a specific beat could cover a specific event?
Had that kind of inanity been heard in any civilized and democratic nation in this world, that minister would have been brought down by a hale of attacks from freedom loving people and by decent politicians without any doubt!
Any minister saying that kind of stupidity in Europe and the people here will have his head on a silver platter!
As you say, “Hellooooo? Since when has government taken over the editorial duties of news organization? Beat assignments are internal matters for a media organization. A government official has no business meddling with it. An editor can send a reporter in any event and it’s none of Puno’s business.”
Who the frig does Puno think he is? Goebbles? If so, he should not be surprised if and when Gloria is deposed along with her dirty government, he finds himself in a court similar to the Nuremberg Trial…
here’s a letter from a young Atenean:
My Fellow Ateneans,
The November 29, 2007 Manila Peninsula siege is yet another proof of the Filipino’s spirit and love for freedom.
It inaugurates a new sense of morality in our country. It brings back a sense of hope, despite the negative daily headlines. And yes, it embodies a growing clamor for immediate change. A clamor for change that involves reflection, discernment and action – principles which we have learned as students of the Jesuits, of the Ateneo.
The form of democracy in our country as elsewhere is being challenged. Yet its essence – politics and freedom – is not something we just choose among options. It is our way of life. We did just that in 1986. The Oakwood mutineers showed us it has not died down in 2003. What happened last Thursday is a continuation of our revolutionary fervor as inheritors of a contentious and freedom loving heroic past.
Should Trillanes, Lim, Bishop Labayen, Fr. Reyes among others go to trial? They should not. We do not want an illegitimate government to render them judgment. Or are we having another Honasan? Yes. Let us continue being contentious and rebellious people. Let us, like all Christians must, be destabilizers of this world that has gone wayward. Just as Christ was. A rebel.
If not the rule of lawlessness will continue to prevail.
As students of the Ateneo de Manila, we are called to participate in the life of our country and see our young lives within it.
We are therefore challenged to act in extraordinary, even miraculous ways. We do it with courage and bravery, the driving forces of change.
The 2010 national elections is still two and a half years away. By that time, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo may have already installed herself Queen of Doom for Life.
Let’s reclaim our political strengths, let’s hold mass classroom walk-outs to highlight the irony of our daily conventional lives. Let’s pressure our community to come up with a braver statement. One with balls, as it were.
This is not the moment to shine, if that includes washing our hands of guilt.
This is the moment to dirty ourselves. To recognize our own complicity in the injustice that has been plaguing our society.
Let us be men and women for others again.
“DISSENT without action is consent.” -B/Gen Danny Lim
Thanks for the post az. That’s a touching letter from a young Filipino. It truly shows that there is still light at the end of the tunnel, considering majority of our brave leaders is now in jail fighting for us. This is a fight by committee, we all should have our own little way to contribute protest against this abusive Gloria and her minions and do it all at the same time as a nation. It’s time to show that abusive powers what we are truly capable of. Tuloy ang laban!
az: thanks for sharing the sentiments of the young Atenean. Evelio Javier was a gradduate of the Ateneo and he lived the life he was taught..Before he went back to the Phil. I had a talk with him and I asked him why are you going home? I reminded him that in life one may have to be practical..and I told him..fine maging hero ka, may statua ka sa plaza and then?….and this is what he told me..manang pangadii lang bala ako..it is not the many years that one lived in this world..it is how he lived his life that matters..just pray for me.”
Each time I go home to Antique and I make it a point to pass by his statue in the spot where he sat when the first bullets hit his body..I could not help the tears..and btw in the front page of the Phil. news this week..”Pacificador to remain in Canada”.
Mike Arroyo is also a graduate of the Ateneo..but as in the Parable of the Sower and the seed…some seeds fell in a good soil..some feel and grew with the weeds..” raku gid nga salamat! Bugtao ron kamo nga mga kabataan…to those who were taught in Ateneo..stand up and be counted.
BTW- at mass today and in the intercessions..we prayed for all the leaders of the world..I prayed for GMA..that she will have the grace to change her heart…sana sa pagpunta niya sa Avila, Spain, Sta. Teresa of Avila will touch her heart to follow the laws of God; sana sa pagpunta niya sa Lourdes Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception will touch her heart and through our Lady’s intercession she will change her ways ..”to Jesus through Mary”..sana sa pagpunta niya sa London, maalaala niya si St. Thomas More and sinabi nito na “a statesman when he removes his private conscience for the sake of his country, he leads his country to chaos..sana..sana..”Come Holy Spirit fill her heart with your love and that she may renew the face of the Philippines.. Holy Spirit touch her heart.”..sana..sana..
Let us not stop praying for all the journalists who put their lives so we may all know the real story..Ellen and Co.
thank you..let us keep praying for the Phil.. wala man tayo doon physically we can give our support through our prayers..we all pray to the same God, don’t we? So let us all be united in our prayers..
There was also a report that the unano herself wanted to issue those warrant of arrest, which BTW is a gross violation of any civilized law because warrants can only be issued by the court in all civilized and even perhaps backward countries!!!
Pathetic! The creep must be that desperate to hold on to her stolen position.
On the other hand, at least, now Filipinos see the big difference between Marcos and Gloria!
…warrants of arrest….
What happened to the media people (I had the privilege of watching all possible video clips transmitted from Manila and I was actually trying to look for Ellen there but remembered recognizing only Sandra who was trying hard to get a statement from Gen. Lim) reminded me in fact of the movie “Up Close and Personal” where Michele Pfeiffer, who played the role of a TV journalist, was caught in the middle of a prison riot.
So, who says that Trillanes, et al wasted their time, and what they did was useless? On the contrary, it achieved what it did—exposed the brutality of the criminal trying hard to hold on to her stolen position!
Thank God, Ellen, et al were there to tell the truth, and reason no doubt why the creep and her minions want them out frightened out of their wits by arresting them, etc.
Ang tindi ng kapit!
I say “Idiot!” I would suggest that journalists there on the beat should better bring a copy of international convention that democratic (daw) Philippines should likewise follow and slap them on the faces of any idiot who will try again to harrass and intimidate them with Gloria’s rule of law (daw)!!!
I believe you, Ellen, because I was once a beat reporter myself.
Anna: Had that kind of inanity been heard in any civilized and democratic nation in this world, that minister would have been brought down by a hale of attacks from freedom loving people and by decent politicians without any doubt!
*****
You said it, but over in the Philippines, Anna, the Senators, et al cannot even summon them to appear at the Senate for instance for questioning much less remove them from office for committing such blunders.
The despicable Ronaldo Puno, Razon, and Barias are so pissed off with media because they wanted to kill Lim, Trillanes and company in the assault and make it appear that they were fired upon so they had to shoot at them.
A fake shootout. As fake as the document “discovered” at the hotel that is being peddled by Razon to the public, which nobody believes.
The presence of media frustrated their criminal intentions.
Mabuhay ang matatapang na media. Ces Drilon, Ellen Tordesillas!
Mabuhay ang mga katulad ni Bibeth Orteza!
ng sabi ni Razon they will investigate if somebody made a reservation for the use of the Rizal Room. May tiriring ba siya? Nagpapatawa or trying hard to get sympathy? Ang kalagim lagim na paniwala nila!
Barias may have been so frustrated for not being the “news editor” of Ellen and company even for just a few hours. Puno is not yet in a position to meddle in reporters beat assignments so maybe he should start his own newspaper publishing and be his own editor so that he can assign them to any beat he wants them to cover.
And at the rate Gloria is going with respect to violation of freedom of the press, human rights, rule of law and the constitution, she is giving Marcos the right to claim a place reserved for heroes in Philippine history.
But WHY did they do it? I think the big presence of Mass Media, along with some Church Leaders and supposed Civil Society personalities there made them do it, gave them false hope and false impressions, fueled visions of Edsa Dos in their foolish heads, deluded them into thinking that they could win the people’s support for another people power coup d’etat.
Not even their closest supporters would suggest to Trillanes et al that they ought to try this stunt again some time. Every body knows it was a mistake, like swine casting themselves down a ravine. Yet they are putschists not anywhere near as competent as Angie Reyes was.
In a democracy it is simply not enough to be right. You also have to be fair. You have to play by the rules of the game.
The Media are trying hard to make themselves the Message. They cry oppression and injustice. They cry freedom. Yet there is an obvious hypocrisy in not heeding lawful authorities under the guise of “doing our job.” If there had been bloodshed at the Pen they would have loved it even more, I suppose. More grist for the mill. More newspapers and airtime sold.
They say no one showed up to support Trillanes. But there they were: the scoop-hungry media, the civil society coffee-shop plotters, the semi-professional putschists and leftist bishops with nothing better to do.
Journalists have no more freedom of expression than ordinary citizens. They have no special rights and their duties as citizens are the same as ordinary citizens. It is self-serving for newspapers and other media to make themselves out as heroes for doing their jobs. They work for commercial enterprises selling telecomm load and laundry soap, tsismis and escapism. If they engages in serious news gathering as a sideline well and good. But the Media is just as corrupt and inept as any other institution. And far more hypocritical. Possession of a right to cover news events does not give them license to flaunt authority or obstruct justice. The Press must not come to see itself as having some kind of semi official status or capacity. The Public’s Right to Know what prepaid card or sim to buy this week is NOT the highest right or greatest good in our society.
Only the Opposition can save GMA now. Except they are doing a brilliant job of it!
“But the Media is just as corrupt and inept as any other institution”-DJBRIZALIST
How did you find out about the Manila Peninsula incident? Where you there? I guess you got your information from the media you accuse to be corrupt and inept.
In a way, I agree with Dean that media are generally corrupt. Fortunately there are still albeit a few among those who practice journalism who can still boast of professional integrity.
In a country where corruption is the norm, where powers that be flirt with media by corrupting them, paying them off by offering and placing the spouses of opinion columnists on govt sequestered or state-owned corporations, there’s bound to be corruption.
Sparks, a fellow blogger, summed it up very adroitly: the Philippines is a low level intensity democracy, hence you find that institutions are easy to corrupt.
DJBRizalist, you should change your name to DJBPidalist! Do not use the name of our national hero! You are desecrating Jose Rizal’s name!
I do understand why Dean is feeling very cynical about media… borne perhaps of frustration due to the prevailing conditions in the Philippines where there’s only a semblance of the rule of law, where powers that be flaunt their total disrespect for the basic norms of decency.
It is safe to say therefore that if Dean feels that way, the same feeling of frustration and of utter helplessness could be attributed to Gen Lim, Sen Trillanes and a group of officers and soldiers who staged a press conference in Manila Pen.
Under these circumstances — where the majesty of law is no longer respected at every level of goernment, the citizenry are affected, hence it’s easy to understand why institutions in this country are suspected of compelte ineptitude and corruption.
If the trend continues, little by little, we will all find that this country will lose its moral compass and will ultimately go to the dogs.
DJBRizalist;
Welcome back Amigo!
Solid gold ang comment mo my friend. You prescribed the right medicine, doc!
Trillanes groups gamble rested on high expectations: they believed that squalor society would avert a Edsa-style revolution by taking some wind out of the sails of the hard core opposition’ movement; they assumed the military would be more respectable to there cause and that some military fanatics might defected, and most importantly, Trillanes’s gamble also had a media aspect to call on masses majority — oppositionist and churches socialists, in particular — should take responsibility for the defeat and liquidate Gloria. Trillanes claimed that Gloria’s military lapdogs and legislative allies had prevented him in serving his electoral mandate. He has a high expectation that11 millions plus who voted him will summoned his calling.Whether he fully believed this is unclear. He certainly made his opinion public as often as he could and thus poured out some of the poison that later helped to impeached the president.
Whether all this would have been sufficient to spark the revolution is unclear. Conservative and many moderate abhorred the idea of revolution, particularly in a state of national emergency. But one factor brought the situation to the boiling point: His colleague senators had made it clear that Trillanes move was considered unacceptable. Although Trillanes had been unusually passive and moderate throughout his fight, Administration media propaganda had used him as the symbol of the crude, barbarian soldier and declared him a top-level criminal. In the beginning Esperon has demanded his punishment.Letting him serve his seat in senate seemed impossible.Although some media glorify him as the new sheriff in town, people in the streets did not believe that this turn of events was sincere and durable. The calling seemed somewhat ambivalent,Trillanes supporters gave him “stab-in-the-back” notoriously but nonetheless effectively put his head in the silver platter as a gift of Esperon to his master..
Now,Lim and Trillanes need a lot of rosary and Hail Mary to keep them alive while the wolves are in power.
“In a country where corruption is the norm, where powers that be flirt with media by corrupting them,”- AdeBrux
If I will subscribe to your assertion, the corruption of the media is generally initiated by the Administration (powers that be) because there is no need to pay someone to report the truth unless its an adverstisement, rather you pay someone to hide and distort the truth.
So,generally speaking, the accusation that media is corrupt could very well be applicable in goverment offices and not the Manila Peninsula incident though some of them(media) have their own political biases, leanings and sympathies, the people they were reporting about in my opinion, does not have the money to corrupt the media.
Ace,
Right! I agree, that it is impossible to accuse the people who were doing their jobs on behalf of media outfits to be all corrupt.
Unlike Dean, I’m not a total cynic and I subscribe to the general belief that most (but not all) of those who were there at Manila Pen were doing their jobs with as much professionalism and integrity required of them. But it is also my belief that some of those who were at Manila Pen who covered the story were not beyond sensational journalism.
I think there is a need to distinguish corruption in media, i.e., those who own and operate media outfits, those columnists and writers who believe that they are heavent sent and who write in bad faith from those beat reporters and other individual journalists who do their job with as much professionalsim and integrity as they can muster under the circumstances.
That’s why I emphasized “Fortunately there are still, albeit a few, among those who practice journalism who can still boast of professional integrity.”
Gabriela: A fake shootout. As fake as the document “discovered” at the hotel that is being peddled by Razon to the public, which nobody believes.

It was very obvious as a matter of fact that they wanted to put all the blame on the Magdalo for the siege of Peninsula. The shooting that sounded even like an actual skirmish was even amplified (more like a recording to me as a matter of fact) was probably staged when they saw some journalists leaving as Ellen had stated, and assumed that they were safe to stage an assault and blame the Magdalo for it.
But God in His Infinite Wisdom had provided the likes of Ellen, Herman T. Laurel and Bibeth Orteza to be there to tell the truth and nothing but the truth, no half lies. O di nabuking sila!
Tuloy na tuloy ang laban! If Makati thing put a fire in my butt to be more aggressive but from now on. I am very sure, it did too to other Pinoys as well…
Can we all debate on the issue and not personally attacking each other.
Why is there now a big Sturm und Drang about how the Mass Media were treated after the Manila Pen standoff?
Does anyone in the Media claim to have been mere impartial observers during the event, or is there not a widespread and guilty knowledge that almost all who was there after the first ultimatum to clear out was given, was there with a certain mischieviousness, as if daring the authorities to do something rash while waiting for a scoop.
Are we supposed to be grateful to “heroic journalists” that we find out about such things because of their derring do?
I noticed several of those who were holding up their plastic tie wrapped wrists for the cameras were at the same time “making yosi” as if nothing very serious was really going on and they were really just mugging for the CNN feed.
Most likely the whole incident will be iconized and immortalized by shots of the Guy in a Wig.
Point is why are they not making this bribing of newspapermen, churchmen, et al in the Philippines a crime?
Over here, when a newspaperman is involved in any such bribery scandal, the publisher is likely to be made responsible as well, and by the following day, most likely, someone gets himself hanged in some hotel bathroom or jumps from a tall building in shame!
At least, over in more civilized countries like UK for instance, big newspaper organizations will not tolerate the kind of graft and corruption we know exist in the Philippine media to propagate. They themselves sack staff who will be exposed as breaking any journalism rule, for the truth is there is a distinction between news and paid advertisement like those press releases being submitted to media by the Malacanang stooges for instances with a “padulas.”
BTW, news reporting is definitely different from opinions being written by columnists, who are supposed to be knowledgeable enough to analyze events for which they are hired (not bribed) to state so. Frankly, we can ignore or believe them when we read them, and if we can do it, make our own conclusions after reading all of them famous columnists for instance.
My favorite in fact among the columnists we can read online are Ellen, Herman T. Liu, Ninez Olivares, Nestor Mata and Lito Banayo. Otherwise, gone are the days when they had the likes of Doroy Valencia, Carmen Nakpil and Jose Guevarra, the nemesis of then Mayor of Manila, Antonio Villegas.
May pride naman kasi noon. Ngayon pakapalan na lang ng mukha! Yuck!
On the other hand, beat reporters should not be biased but report the events as they happen with no side comments. Simple rule of journalism —no favor nor fear!—hindi pa masunod ng karamihan.
the PNP will invoke regularity of performance of function. the arresting police do not know the identity of the media people.
Of course there is no more Sacred Cow to the mass media than the mass media itself. But GMA is very savvy in castigating the police for taking on the Mass Media because no one can play the Victimological Card more effectively than the Mass Media. The wailing and flailing and O.A. has been going on since thursday. But what I find deranged is the claim that the only way to defend our freedoms is to exercise them as willfully and foolishly as possible.
But I think the Press egged Trillanes on to jump off a Cliff so they could take pictures. He willingly obliged. That’s when they realized they were even more photogenic than him and the story is suddenly one about Press Freedom and echoes of Marcos.
Susmaryosep!
Re: Gloria Arroyo and her minions (I’m so disappointed with PNP Chief Avelino Razon; he had impressed me as a more enlightened police officer) accuse us of “obstructing justice” when we decided to stay put at the hotel.
It’s truly a Republic of Bribery. And it you think Congressmen are the only avid Citizens of it, you should see the true pillars of the community at all those journalist’s kapihans and weekly bulong-bulongans and public forums. What do you folks think goes on in those tete-a-tetes? Heroic journalism? Confidential sources working with brave reporters to save the country? Reality is, most of the Press works for some Power-That-Is, and large numbers of them are for sale for relatively small sums. As Miriam would say, para silang mga talakitok.
You don’t don’t know cyncial from nothing, Adebrux!

Sinabi mo pa. Sabi nga, “Birds of the same feather, flock together.” I know some people, who refused to serve this idiot. Those who did apparently ended up as morally bankrupt.
Ah, DJBRIZALIST, but I do now … with you around, easy!
Frankly, we should commend Ellen for putting up this blog where we get even her first-hand accounts on events in the Philippines that she cannot actually put all in her column for instance because of space limitation although I know her editor does not put too much restrain on what she puts up in her articles.
That is why I like to read articles in Malaya because I see a freer reporting than say Inquirer, etc.
A friend of mine works for a newspaper in Manila, and I know the kind of strain she experiences for not being able to write the way she honestly would want to as she limits her words in accordance with what she thinks her editor would want her article to be especially when the editor must be one of those getting something from the palace by the murky river.
“Walang magagawa, Yuko, kasi baka ako masesante!” she said. And right now, she cannot afford to get unemployed. Sabi nga niya, “Can you find me a job at some newspaper there?”
Pathetic, di ba?
I like your new found name for Pinas though — Republic of Bribery.
Now the barker at Buckingham Palace had better be told before Gloria the moral dwarf y mangsusuhol is presented to Her Majesty the Queen…
We should actually be grateful for the kind of information Ellen is willing to share with her visitors here regardless of whether or not they share her views.
Frankly, I am here because I do. Otherwise, I won’t be here just to satisfy my still to be cultivated sadistic nature debating with some idiots who think they have a monopoly of good and sound reasoning.
I stay here because I share the sentiments of a lot of bloggers here, and I trust Ellen for the kind of information she shares. Fortunately, I can get confirmation of the authenticity of her information working albeit for some TV networks here presently.
Thanks, Ellen, for the reminder. Maganda nga without my usual signature!
Dean,
Must say I agree with you, “It’s truly a Republic of Bribery. And it you think Congressmen are the only avid Citizens of it, you should see the true pillars of the community at all those journalist’s kapihans and weekly bulong-bulongans and public forums. What do you folks think goes on in those tete-a-tetes?”
I used to be invited to the Tuesday Club in Shangri-la Edsa a bit in the past whenever I visited Pinas and boy, the tchismis that went around, wow! Plus all those biggies in govt soliciting the attention of the big names in Phil press, unbelievable.
Reporters covering the Pen are just doing their job so as the police authorities. Both have their own kind of training; both are professionals so why deny the other in performing their assigned jobs? The police acted just like the police of Hitler, no mercy and brutal.
Attack on press freedom is really nothing new in gloria’s reign. It’s a part of her policy, to keep everybody’s senses shut off; no smell, no feel, no see, no hear and no talk about her lying cheating, stealing and killing. It’s a good thing we still have some principled and incorruptible media men and women who stand up and fight and expose them at the risk of losing their lives. To them, Ellen and her kind, I salute you. May your breed increase. To the corrupt media members, may you have a heart and think of poor Philippines and the populace
Anna,
Any news if the idiot has been told she has to don a hat when she meets with the Queen?
This reminds me of what I was told when their Imperial Highnesses here granted an audience for the greedy couple. Wala daw dalang tuxedo iyong batsoy. Naghanap pa ng isusuot. Ginalugad ang lahat ng rental shop dito. I think nakahiram sa isang tabatsoy din at the last minute na muntik pang ma-late sa schedule. I just am not sure if the renter was a Sumo wrestler!
Ano kaya ang itsura ni Baboy in tuxedo which he should wear when they are presented to the queen unless of course the meeting is informal and without the usual fanfare?
But you know who the biggest media briber is in the Republic of Bribery of DJBRIZALIST? Gloria!
Why, she hardly goes for the beat reporter — she goes way, way up to the bosses, and the asst bosses, and their immediate subalterns. She holds small dinner parties for the big whigs in media in her little salon in the Palace, and entertains them as if she were Madame de Sevigné…
She gives them lots of favours, offers them perks, disburses privileges on them, their spouses as if she were queen knighting an important pillar of society, and hands out posts in goverment offices as if these were a private corporation that her pig consort of a husband owns, etc, etc, etc.
Pathetic!
Yuko,
If Gloria wears a hat baka isuot niyan ay salakot! Di mag-mumukhang walking umbrella yan… Huwag na lang siyang mag-hat.
Hahahahah! ” I just am not sure if the renter was a Sumo wrestler!”
Yuko, sige, sana nga mag tuxedo siya in the afternoon for tea — Hahahahahah!
I remember a time when I was in London, I witnessed a parade complete with the guards and barker in colorful attire with the queen in a carriage with a foreign visitor, a president of some African country on a state visit to UK. Then, they were waving on the balcony at the palace and waved to the crowd.
That was an experience indeed!
Will the fat guy and the short woman ride with the queen in her carriage, too?
Maganda niyan nandoon iyong mga OFWs waving their anti-GMA slogans and placards as the carriage passes by from Guildhall to Buckingham Palace. I am told they are holding protests in countries she is visiting in Europe.
BBC in fact flashes news on the Pen siege, and made comments on the why it happened with mention of the demand for the unano’s resignation and criticism of corruption in her government.
AI based in London is joining the protest I think because of the unsolved and unabated extrajudicial killing.
Pero without a hat, Anna, the idiot will be deemed as bastos! In fact, when I attended such function in Tokyo during the Queen’s visit, we were strictly instructed to wear a hat. Napabili tuloy ako ng sombrero that cost me over a hundred dollars terno doon sa damit at sapatos ko!!!
Si Navarro o si Espiritu aka as the corrupt raider of banks?
But this guy, Anna, is different. He is not contented to be mere consort. He is the man behind the throne, more like a Rasputin! That is why he insists on coming along as when the creep was invited to the Imperial Palace for a 15 minute or less talk with their Imperial Highnesses.
Yuko,
It would be good if she and her husband commit faux pas; it’s considered good social etiquette to wear one (but since Gloria doesn’t even know how to hold a tea cup, why bother?) but it is absolutely de riquer if it’s garden tea or if there’s an official public ceremony. But I doubt Her Majesty the Queen would give her the time of day to parade a parvenu like this moral dwarf in public.
It would be great if her pig consort of a husband wears a tuxedo for an afternoon tea — hahahah! That will be the height of faux pas!
Baka sabihin niyan “Come again?” Hahahahah!
Hahahah!
Yuko,
You had better be prepared… now Gloria the moral dwarf will be boasting that she’s been received no less than by Her Majesty, Elizabeth Regina and she will DEMAND that Foreign Affairs do everything in their power to be received by the Emperor of Japan!
Hahahah!
Hahahah!
How about that, Madam Whore Gloria Arroyo will get the chance to meet a real live Queen. I guess, when she return, if the Atlantic Ocean sharks don’t get to her first, I’m sure she’s going to make lots of noises about Parliamentary gov’t again, so she can be the Philippines Queen for life.
Of course I am grateful for journalists, just as much as for policemen, or soldiers or carpenters or computer programmers or any other useful social occupation. But when I pay my cable and Internet bills, all accounts are deemed settled, I owe them nothing, they owe me nothing even if there may be some residual mutual admiration.
I think it is better this way, because had last Thursday turned out to be a bloody massacre because the Media decided to play “Chicken!” with the cops, I’m sure some here would not be soliciting me for my gratitude and appreciation of their professional handiwork.
But Fr. Joaquin Bernas is right in a recent column:
Journalists do not have more freedom of expression than ordinary citizens. (That includes bloggers!) However, the nature of their profession unavoidably exposes them to the danger of that freedom being curtailed–sometimes lawfully.
I think this is an impt principle we should keep in mind when we speak aobut “press freedom” as if it were some kind of special, sacrosant entitlement that journalists receive for being journalists.
The Right of the Public to Know does not empower journalists with any more rights than ordinary people. Journalists do not have license to break the law, to disrespect established authorities, or to give aid and comfort to law breakers just because one may sympathize with their larger causes.
The most serious editorial or OpEd column is just as sacrosanct as the tsismis/entertainment pieces in the more flighty or frivolous pages of the papers. In fact, the same freedom of expression protects the advertisers that protects the editorial writers and famous pundits.
Freedom of expression is a whole cloth and is largely content and quality neutral since almost all speech is equally protected speech under the Constitution. Thus, as much Constitutional protection is accorded to the silliest New Age piece by the mental fantabulist and third-eye-opener, Jimmy Licauco, as the front page headline story or current editorial, as the latest Globe/Smart bit of bandwidth for sale, as silliest radio jingle or TV titillation spot, or Neo Angono caricature.
If we castigate the Wowowee staff for endangering the lives of the game show participants, so too should media be criticized for playing with fire last Thursday by making gatong the bishops, the putschists and military adventureroz.
Would somebody please shoot me already, or tell me WHAT in the world the Guy in a Wig was all about!?
Salakot tapos may batya at palopalo!
Taragis, I didn’t even try when I was there. Ayoko kasing sasabihan ako ng “Oh dear!”
“…by making gatong the bishops, the putschists and military adventureroz”
Emen! Ganyan naman talaga ang media. Self-righteous. Mahilig mag-pontificate. Puro rights na lang nila. Di na nila alam na they have responsibilities as well.
Ang tatapang ng apog i-invoke ang freedom of the press, sabihing violation of press freedom. Di ba naka-report sila? In full view nga yung pag-‘aresto’ sa kanila.
Ang media hubris talaga oo.

My friend, you are one heck of an idealist. Unless, you haven’t realize, the current administration is Machiavellian in nature… For them, it is better to be feared than to be loved; the end justifies the means…
Now, if those who oppose this administration is going to fight fair and square while the administration is not, what is the outcome? Sure, good always prevail evil… in movies…
You want to have a fair chance of succeeding against the administration? Then you have to give them a taste of their own medicine…

Not without a go-signal from the US maybe. Kung UK lang, hindi naman gagayahin ng mga hapon iyan especially with parliamentarians here well informed of the condition at present in the Philippines.
Hindi ko nga maintindihan why Queen Elizabeth II would listen to her son in inviting the unano and her Rasputin. Even Imelda failed to accomplish that as a matter of fact.
Right now, Anna, hindi na puedeng mag-state visit si unano dito para lang umutang! No way. Once is enough. Kasi gastos din iyan on taxpayers’ expense. Lalo na itong si Gloria. Sira na iyan sa Japanese public as a matter of fact. Iyan ang isang accomplishment ng Magdalo standoff as a matter of fact—to inform of the true state of the nation!!!
That is why we are having a street demonstration on Sunday in Tokyo. All concerned Filipinos are invited to attend. 200 Japanese and more than 50 Burmese will join us as a matter of fact. Meeting place will be at Ebisu Stn. from 11:30 am.
Those who will attend, please wear black and don a red scarf or muffler for effect! Street march from Ebisu to Meiji Jingu.
AdB,
Alam mo naman sila Barias of the Septic Tank Explosion fame, e shoot before asking question ( and after planting evidence ) ang motto nyan… baka dyan, e yung parusa is just a slap on the wrist…
Maganda niyan, Anna, someone suggests to the Queen to cancel her engagement with the unano for delikadeza sake. I would dare ask our parliamentarians here to do that had I known for example the previous attempts of the creep to get an audience with the emperor and empress here.
Pinagbigyan na nga lang doon sa state visit, but I’m told of the times the request from the Philippine Embassy was turned down and the unano fuming mad at the guy who could not get her the appointment, and threatened of recall to Manila!
But who would want to be recalled to Manila when assigned to Japan.
Talk of what the citizenry here can do as a matter of fact.
Yuko,
Andrew is a roving salesman for UK defence industry and of course since there’s another contract to be signed for the upgrade of RP materiel, he was forced to ask his Mamman to receive Gloria, the Philippine gourgandine to serve British defence industry interest! Part and parcel of his “job”…
Philippines has funds for defence contrary to what many folks might think.
Piping Dilat,
If they come this way, I promise you, not only me but a few other folks will throw bulok na itlog at Gloria… or if possible a tart…
Government’s reaction to the Manila Peninsula incident was indeed an overkill. 30 rebels against a battalion?
You smash an APC into a hotel? And you rain bullets into the lobby? And you arrest reporters?
It reminded me of a kid in my neighborhood. He and a group of his playmates were playing the usual kid games in the street. The kid got jostled a bit in their rough and tumble antics. He went home (which was just nearby) and soon brought his two burly big brothers along who proceeded to threaten and bully the other kids around.
Bullying is cowardice. 30 against a battalion?
May on line ba ang Tiktik?
Re: DJBRIZALIST’s “WHAT in the world the Guy in a Wig ”
Pardon me, but what guy in a wig?
Anna, go to Manolo’s latest entry to see the guy in the wig.
Phil Cruz,
Nine Eleven was carried out by what? 19 men?
there was really no way to know what Danny Lim and Sonny Trillanes had up their sleeve this time around. How could anyone know they had nothing but a Guy in a Wig?
So a batallion was prudent. Better to have more, than less power to re-establish law and order.
There was at least a regiment of Press Freedom Fighters there no? Mentong Laurel and the Mawkish Militia, too. And at least a confession-box full of Holier-than-thou Bishops.
Overkill? But no one was hurt and Trillanes really ought to pay for all the broken glass and busted down doors.
The Media can wail. And will.
Yuko,
Unfortunately, however despicable the guest is perceived, the Queen does not cancel appointments at the last minute.
Anyway, no big deal naman yan sa Britain — am sure nobody gives a hoot about Gloria here. She’s a nobody, just someone from a small troubled Republic who is being given a little time by the Queen.
You must remember that the Brits are a nation of merchants — they don’t care about the Philippine’s bogus queen. All they know is that she leads a corrupt govt that will sign juicy contracts with some flagging British industries. Easy to do business with her, utoin lang ayan contracts na!
The upstart British ambassador in RP is the de facto head of the British lobby for British industry in Pinas. As long as Brits make money, who cares? That’s what the British ambassador tells himself. Corrupt country? Easy!
Brits are the eternal pragmatist…
DJBRIZALIST,
To establish law and order? Law and order in that Republic of Bribery of yours?
You must be mad!
Hi Chuck,
I went there but Manolo’s blog is still the old one… no picture of a guy in a wig.
Anna,
I’ll email it to you.
Thanks, Yuko!
DJBRizalist,
For all intent and purpose, the media “trapped” inside the Manila Pen “prevented” what could have been another Capt. Panfilo Villaruel incident or that siege of Bicutan where Kumander Robot ( and other captive ASG’s ) were eliminated because nanlaban daw ( inspite of his foot having been recently amputated )… kung walang natirang media doon, most likely than not, lalabas na malamig na bangkay sina Trillanes and Lim…
Ellen,
I just heard on the radio that the Pen journalists are being invited to a dialogue with the PNP on Wednesday at some hotel.
I bet you, my relatives who have served with the Manila’s Finest must be fidgetting in their graves.
As for the Midget’s rainbow tour, Anna, you are right. Only Manila is giving it prominence. There is not even any mention of it in the Spanish TV I watched today via satellite. Iyon lang mga 1,000 invited Filipinos to a hall ang nagse-celebrate apparently of this state visit kuno.
Tignan natin sa London with the same OFW audience invited to some reception there again paid with taxpayers’ money. Sa Tokyo nga, during her visit in spring, binayaran pa ang pamasahe noong mga galing sa probinsiya para masabing popular siya. Siyempre naman kung alam mong magiging madali ang pagkuha ng passport, etc. after that, hindi ka pupunta?
Republic of Bribery nga! Mendicant mentality pa ang labas!
BTW, NPC filed a complaint against the PNP today re arrest of the journalists. Nakakainggit? You bet!
Galing talaga ng publicity gimmick ni unano. Buti na lang hanggang Pilipinas lang.
Associating ourselves to a hero, and having a totally different views and principles from whom we want to be identified with, is simply incongruous!
Cocoy,
In this regard, successful pa rin sila.
hindi naman nakapagtataka, na may journalist sa scene dun sa hotel, cause accrding to the survey media is the no. 1 supporter of Trillanes…joke only..their just doing their job..hrr.. the PNP should have a dialogue, 5 W’s and how, a clear line between rebellion and reporting. hahaha.peace to the philippines.
Have you read the comments of Rex Robles? He makes perfect sense on my doubts on the following: 1) why hotels were targetted and not real honest to goodness targets, 2) why they surrendered quickly such that the situation was resolved easily, and 3) why the oakwood and peninsula incidents made gma look decisive.

Off Topic: Mmmm, asspweron is going to Malaysia. I wonder if he is one of the beneficiaries of the land to be given out to the MILF kuno. This should be looked into. I do not trust this dog at all!
Re:I just heard on the radio that the Pen journalists are being invited to a dialogue with the PNP on Wednesday.
I have not received any invitation. If that’s an invitation, I have the option to accept or not accept.
re piping Dilat’s comment:
If they did that, we would not have been in their way. As far I was able to sense it, Lim, Trillanes and the other Magdalo officers were prepared to die.
We would just have reported it as is. Massacre kung massacre. Not shoot out. Yung totoo lang.
Polytechnic University of the Philippines.Di ba Philippine College of Commerce ito.
“I have not received any invitation. If that’s an invitation, I have the option to accept or not accept.”-Ellen
Hindi pa magkaisa sa mga sinasabi that you get the feeling that they deliberately they are doing that to confuse the public in a vain hope of turning their sentiments against the brave soldiers, who have long rejected to be under the command of a criminal!
Ano iyan? Lokohan?
All the more reason why the media should bundle together against this oppressive regime.
The press people were just their on the scene doing there jobs.
PD:
Iyan din ang nasa isip ko when I thought about it.
I bet you, this is not the first time they will do it. Kaya sa mga media people, advise ko, please make sure to bring a mask and a google when you go there.
Hi Ellen,
Naku… better tell Trillanes and Lim that they can serve the country a lot more… ALIVE than DEAD…
I had the impression that it was Trillanes who initiated the event and Lim looked “bewildered” initially during the walk out… tama ba yun?
Trillanes is young and an idealist… “mapusok” at madaling “mabuyo” ika nga ( i might be wrong though )… somebody has to teach him how not to let emotions dictate his actions… he has to learn the ways of his opponents and use them against his opponents… this is a struggle not a game… there is no rules of engagement… sabi nga ni Machiavelli… there are two kinds of enemies… man and beast… therefore one must learn how to be a man and how to be a beast…
Yung mga nag-iinsist na… one should stick to the “rules of law” in the struggle, e , ngayon pa lang talo na… because the opponents are not men but beasts…
Trillanes can start moralizing and bring back the rule of law when he gets the upperhand… and hopefully he will not be seduced by power, once he attained victory….
Sabi ni TB, What’s the score for Destab’
The ‘rebel without a cause’ tag)
chi,
Are you voting for Ron Paul? How is he doing from your end?
Thanks.
advice to Trillanes, this is just like a game of chess, wrong moved, checkmate, you should attacked for the king, not a hotel, hello.. just like Cayetano did.. take your bishop work for you, your pawns protect you, (media.et.al) let the rook be your guide, let the queen come and say im sorry i pardon you..Estrada is better than you.peace to the philippines
i think it was correct for some of the media people like ellen to stay put, for just in case something happened they would be able to document the happening.when ellen says that she sensed that trillanes and company were prepared to die, i have to accept her judgement for i was not there.it is however difficult to accept that the journalists will not be on the way when the shooting starts because of their number.
Anna,
The guy with the wig is not a soldier but apparently an employee of the Makati City Hall. Wala namang ginawa kundi maglagay ng wig, and so what if he joined the cry for the removal of the criminal from Malacanang? Wala naman silang armas to prove that they had staged a revolution!
Their march from the city hall to the hall can be deemed merely as a street demonstration that in civilized countries is tolerable since anyway they were not apprehended by the police of Makati. It is freedom of speech!
Telling the creep now on her rainbow tour to Europe to step down is not a crime! Bakit hindi alam ng mga bobo iyan?
Kawawang Pilipinas! Kawawang mga pilipino! Pati mga pulis tsismis ang ginagawa. Paiba iba ang statement na binibigay! Yuck!
Rose,
To your question re expenses for the rainbow tour of the Dorobo, the plane fare (first class) of the Congressmen tagging along is 5,000 dollars each, 3,000 dollars each as travel allowance, and 1,000 dollars each for other miscellaneous expenses.
JdV denies that Congress has released funds for such expenses.
“Polytechnic University of the Philippines.Di ba Philippine College of Commerce ito.”
yococ p’re,
‘yan na nga. wala ng iba.
The Peninsula affair was half cooked. During the march, everyone was watching, some waiting to join the victory… but suddenly all went wrong.
I had the feeling that indeed some press people were in the know. That feeling started when there was a lull in this blog corner. There was a call for a school reunion at first and there was music…
I am happy for those press people, at least they did their part. I missed it. But my kumpare suceeded in joining those apprehended and booked. They will be heroes, even greater than Rizal or those Marcos victims who will get a piece each of the pie of 10B windfall.
What’s going on with Noli Castro? Not a word? Wasn’t he a ceremonial Abs-Cbn reporter before becoming a ceremonial VP?

A line of a true hero!
Down the road, the ultimate question is this: Who is to be blamed for the Trillanes-Lim “rebellion”? Whose fault is it?
I don’t condone the duo for that stand off, but the response to it is more deplorable than their supposed sins against the state. Why deploy a battalion and 2 APCs to contain so-called “rebellion” in a popular hotel?
If one looks at the origin of this, all road points to the lack of trust to an illegitimate regime that keeps on pushing people against the wall.
“Barias betrays the mentality of this government treating media as an extension of its propaganda arm. Those who refuse are considered the enemy.”
Some posters her also betray the mentality of regulars in this blog. Those who disagree with SOME of their points are quickly considered the enemy.
“DJBRizalist, you should change your name to DJBPidalist! Do not use the name of our national hero! You are desecrating Jose Rizal’s name!”
this guy characterizes the attitude of many in this blog. unable to counter the arguments posted by DJB, parasabayan can only post a pathetic ad hominem (personal attack)
“…gave them false hope and false impressions, fueled visions of Edsa Dos in their foolish heads, deluded them into thinking that they could win the people’s support for another people power coup d’etat.”
regulars at this blog are also guilty of giving those poor men false hopes and impressions. akala siguro nina Trillanes, pag sinimulan nila, susunod ang mga ulol na aso dito. lols. di nga makaalis sa comfort zone nila.
media was right in insisting to cover the event. but it was wrong in the way it covered the event. too crybaby. puro sumbong sa manonood. tinear-gas kami, di kami makahinga, pinoposasan na kami! there was actually a point in the coverage of the incident na nagkaroon ng blackout sa kung ano nangyayari kina Lim at Trillanes. lumipat ang buong focus ng parehong ABS at GMA sa mga kasamahan nilang inaaresto. kinalimutan na sina Trillanes at Lim.
“It is beyond them to appreciate the role of media of empowering the people by delivering accurate information.”
Sorry Ellen. But this is why we have a problem. Not all of your colleagues are the same as you. And the major TV station’s executives have actually worser ethics than Barias or Arroyo.
accurate information, or skewed?
tell me truthfully, may self-regulation ba ang media dito sa bansa natin? pinaparusahan nyo ba ang di sumusunod sa code of ethics nyo? bat andaming nagkalat na reporters na walang modo? na kung umakto eh dyos porke’t may media badge..
today’s media in our country is losing respect bec most of your colleagues don’t know the fine line bet freedom of speech and exercising it responsibly.
just bec you are free to speak doesn’t mean you can go into a theatre and shout “fire!”
in short, freedom entails responsibility. and media today, is nothing but irresponsible.
classic line ng isang aroganteng media man:
papalag ka? media ako.
this speaks volumes kung anong klaseng ugali meron ang karamihan nating mga media men and women.
Harion, I partly agree with your opinion about media. Maraming arogante nga. Look around the vehicles roaming in the streets…maraming may display na ID at stickers ng media. Some are not even connected with the media but manage to get those IDs that they display.
I agree with you Mr. Harion. Media is one of the problem. Habang nakikinig ako ng manila-penn. stand-off si Ted Faylon ng Abs-Cbn, he quoted that ” sa tindi daw ng competition ngayon sa media, dahil daw sa ratings nila kaya ayaw daw nilang umalis sa manila – penn. Kung ating pag-tagniin, Trillanes is a nobody but very loved by the media, Became a senator, then, want to be the caretaker of the new government. why? Trillanes knows media is at his side.
Harion,
are you one other olol also? That goes true to other pikons. Wala naman kayong magagawang mapakinabanagan ko. Payabangan lang.
” “MY BLOOD IS A SMALL PRICE TO PAY TO AWAKEN THE HEARTS OF OUR PEOPLE” -Senator Antonio Trillanes ”
No need, dear senator. The hearts of the people have awakened – to your stupidity, delusions, arrogance, hubris, absence of responsibility, and your ambitions to be this country’s Musharraf!
Kapal ng apog mo. Uunahan mo pa si Gringo or yung ka-mistah nyang si Lacson.
Hoy trillanes! Hanggang puwit ka lang nina Gringo or Lacson!
Asa ka pa! Ikaw talaga trillanes @#$%$#@#!!!
“Harion, are you one other olol also? Please wag naman mapikon.”
lols. pikunin mo ang sarili mo. ako pikon? sori, but your imagination’s running wild.
Harion.
Sorry, I’m mistaken. Wala ka na palang period.
Thanks, Chi.

ASIII,
Just remind us why we are far better off with GMA ? What exactly had she done in the past that had a spectacular effect on the Philippine economy? Is she allowed to mock the fundamental laws of the land? You have no problem with her prostituting the judiciary, political, military establishment with her transactional politics… and asking you to foot the bill?

why did i suddenly remember SWS and Pulse Asia?
its like asking a communist what he thinks of capitalism
gleng gleng! thanks for the amusement! you made my day! (lalo na nung may kumagat!)
thank you!
“Just remind us why we are far better off with GMA?”
“What exactly had she done in the past that had a spectacular effect on the Philippine economy?”
1. the effects will be felt later. no one can say if the numbers she is trumpeting will be sustained. only time will tell (as a matter of fact, the only way to know if something is sustainable is to wait several years then look back.
2. if you are looking for a miracle in the magnitude that all 8M OFWs suddenly go back home and have jobs here, then wala pa.
“Is she allowed to mock the fundamental laws of the land?”
no
“You have no problem with her prostituting the judiciary, political, military establishment with her transactional politics… and asking you to foot the bill?”
i have problems with that
“Platitudes do not achieve reform. Yesterday’s adventure might yet bear fruit.”
it already did – the country realized that it does not need a deluded, self-proclaimed savior and a Musharraf-wannabee
ASIII:
What can I say.I completely agree with you,walang labis,walang kulang.Pantay ay kalos sa salop.hehehe!

GMA has been in power since 2001… and the Philippine economy is still going down… not up! She promised us brighter future every year for the next 7 years… I think that after 7 years and those plans to jumpstart the economy is still in its infancy stage… that is a sign of retardation….
“2. if you are looking for a miracle in the magnitude that all 8M OFWs suddenly go back home and have jobs here, then wala pa.” – ASIII
had she managed the economy from the very start, instead of being pre-occupied with elections and commissions… those OFW numbers won’t have to go out since the Philippines will get a significant chunk of the investments that goes to Asia every year in terms of factories being built… ang siste nito, mas kumokonti pa ang mga kompanya dito dahil lumilipat ng China o Vietnam dahil mahal ang utilities dito… ano ba ang unang inatupag ni GMA nang maupo sya? Four days after, she signed a PPA aggreement with IMPSA !

Kailangan pa bang ulitin na she made a mockery of the impeachment process, several times? Her transactional politics made it impossible to proceed with the impeachment process … she simply hides behind the “rule of law” only when convenient. That is a defeatish attitude!

“GMA has been in power since 2001… and the Philippine economy is still going down… not up!”
i strongly disagree. the economy may be growing at a snail’s pace, but it is not going down. do not belittle the efforts of the private sector here. gloria is never a factor in a growing economy.
“She promised us brighter future every year for the next 7 years… I think that after 7 years and those plans to jumpstart the economy is still in its infancy stage… that is a sign of retardation….”
the promise was a typical politician’s promise. in addition, she could not fully do her job because she still had to deal with the opposition.
you know why Vietnam and China are growing economically? their presidents/heads of governments never had to contend with an opposition!
“had she managed the economy from the very start, instead of being pre-occupied with elections and commissions… those OFW numbers won’t have to go out since the Philippines will get a significant chunk of the investments that goes to Asia every year in terms of factories being built… ”
iho, i don’t have the exact stats, but more than half of OFWs go abroad, not because they were unemployed here, but the bigger pay is abroad.
saka iho, realize that it is not gloria’s responsibility to provide jobs. her job is to provide the right environment for business to flourish and operate. yung puro rallies and impeachment attempts send the wrong signals to foreign investors
Four days after, she signed a PPA aggreement with IMPSA !”
whats wrong with that?
Kailangan pa bang ulitin na she made a mockery of the impeachment process, several times? Her transactional politics made it impossible to proceed with the impeachment process … she simply hides behind the “rule of law” only when convenient. Tapos sasabihin mo na dapat sumunod tayo sa tamang proseso? That is a defeatish attitude!”
iho, yung pagsabi nyang di na sya tatakbo is a form of self-restraint, pero legally she can still run. ngayon, she cannot stay beyond June 30, 2010. kaya kahit sabihin pa nyang tatakbo uli sya ngayon eh hindi na puwede.
“At ilagay mo ang sarili mo sa sapatos nya… Kapag nawala ka sa pwesto, sa dami nang atraso mo sa bayan, ano ang mangyayari sa iyo ?”
di ko alam. with the kind of opposition, she can go scot free.
Very good!
ASIII,
“the promise was a typical politician’s promise. in addition, she could not fully do her job because she still had to deal with the opposition.”
In the first three years of her power grab, she was very much in control… but what she was preoccupied with during that time was not the welfare of the nation but the election in 2004. Trying to legitimize what she had done to Erap. Trying to fortify herself by prostituting the institutions… preparing the Comelec, promoting Generals based on loyalty rather than integrity, etc… the opposition, then, had hardly anything to do with those moves…
“i strongly disagree. the economy may be growing at a snail’s pace, but it is not going down. do not belittle the efforts of the private sector here.”
if it is going at a snail’s pace, then you practically admits that the gov’t headed by GMA with a PhD in economics is doing a poor job. She is not qualified, then!
“iho, i don’t have the exact stats, but more than half of OFWs go abroad, not because they were unemployed here, but the bigger pay is abroad. ”
They went out because they cannot find a job that can sustain their families here… you got OFW in Middle East na pumapatol sa monthly salary of USD300. That is a sign of desperation not a free choice, really. And again, had GMA done her job, these people will not have to go out since with investments coming in, there will be more jobs available… who the hell wants to go out and be apart from their families?
“are you sure with this statement? kung half true yan, eh di nag-alisan na ang lahat ng foreign businesses dito, wala nang naiwan! besides, napaka cheap ng suweldo na ino-offer ng China at Vietnam, di kayang tapatan dito. yan ang reason why lumilipat sila. saka isa pa – walang opposition sa Viertnam and China, kaya convinced sila of political stability ”
FEDEX, ACER, UNIDEN, UNILEVER, are among the few… you will be surprised to know that salary is not the major reason of the companies for moving out… it is infrastructure, cost of utilities, and bureaucracy… we have inadequate infrastructures in handling transportation of goods, cost of electricity is one of the highest in Asia, thanks to the PPA’s …. and BOC and LGU are one of the dirtiest in Asia… not to mention rampant smuggling in those freeport zones, giving local industries undue losses indirectly ( pati nga gulay, bawang, sibuyas… pinatulan na rin nang smuggling… kawawa yung mga farmers natin )… may ginawa ba si GMA dito? Mayroon nga… nangumisyon pa nga sila, di ba?
“iho, sisihin mo ang mga matatalinong tao na bahagi ng oposisyon. sila ang dahilan kung bakit nakaupo pa rin si gloria. dahil watak watak sila, kanya kanya sila. di nila naisip yung impeachment. gusto kasing mag-people power.”
Unless hindi ka nagbabasa nang news, hindi mo sasabihin yan…
“kaya make the most of the situation, gumawa ka na lang ng iba para makatulong sa mga kababayan mo.”
Like what?
“In the first three years of her power grab, she was very much in control…”
it was not a power grab. the people decided to kick out erap. gloria was the beneficiary.
“but what she was preoccupied with during that time was not the welfare of the nation but the election in 2004.”
tsk tsk tsk you fell for opposition rhetoric
“Trying to legitimize what she had done to Erap.”
you are free to air that view
“Trying to fortify herself by prostituting the institutions… preparing the Comelec, promoting Generals based on loyalty rather than integrity, etc…”
same thing
“the opposition, then, had hardly anything to do with those moves…”
are you serious??!! for starters, how many much needed laws could not be enacted because the legislators are busy doing investigations instead of making laws. the cabinet technocrats could not focus on their jobs because they still have to attend hearings ‘in aid of legislation’
tingnan mo ang China at Vietnam. umuusad, kasi walang nanggugulong opposition!
“if it is going at a snail’s pace, then you practically admits that the gov’t headed by GMA with a PhD in economics is doing a poor job. She is not qualified, then!”
my goodness! are you serious with that argument?!? if you pursue that line of argument, gloria will be in a good light! because compared to all presidents post EDSA 1, she’s the only one who posted better figures!
no trickle down effect yet? Cory had the chance of controlling the population, yet she didn’t. those born during Cory’s term are approaching adulthood now, and are gloria’s worry now (how to make them employed)
“They went out because they cannot find a job that can sustain their families here…”
“you got OFW in Middle East na pumapatol sa monthly salary of USD300.”
i feel for them.
“That is a sign of desperation not a free choice, really.”
remember my statement – i said that more than half of OFWs go abroad not out of desperation. I am not discounting those going abroad out of desperation.
again, wala akong stats to back this up – eh bakit umabot sa desperation ang would-be OFW? dahil lumaki ang pamilya nya sa size na di na niya kaya? tapos sisisihin ang gobyerno?
“and again, had GMA done her job, these people will not have to go out since with investments coming in, there will be more jobs available… who the hell wants to go out and be apart from their families?”
iho, may i refer you to the websites of the BOI (board of investments) and the PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone Authority) so you can see how much investments are pouring in and how many jobs created.
you may not be aware, but more jobs are available here. siguro naman di mo na sisisihin ang gobyerno kapag di nakatapos ang ilang kabataan
“Unless hindi ka nagbabasa nang news, hindi mo sasabihin “yan…
asus, ayaw mo pang aminin. kung sabagay, ayaw din aminin ng oposisyon na caught flat-footed sila with the half-baked impeachment complaints of Lozano and Pulido. bakit di nila naisip kaagad ang impeachment?!
“FEDEX, ACER, UNIDEN, UNILEVER, are among the few… you will be surprised to know that salary is not the major reason of the companies for moving out… it is infrastructure, cost of utilities, and bureaucracy… we have inadequate infrastructures in handling transportation of goods, cost of electricity is one of the highest in Asia, thanks to the PPA’s …. and BOC and LGU are one of the dirtiest in Asia… not to mention rampant smuggling in those freeport zones, giving local industries undue losses indirectly ( pati nga gulay, bawang, sibuyas… pinatulan na rin nang smuggling… kawawa yung mga farmers natin )… may ginawa ba si GMA dito? Mayroon nga… nangumisyon pa nga sila, di ba?”
alam mo iho, even if what you said is only half true, no foreign investor will remain here! many may be moving out, but many are moving in, the net effect is still positive (those moving in outnumber those moving out)
“Like what?
wala kang makuhang benepisyo? bakit kaya? eh how come maraming nagkakaroon ng trabaho?
To name a few – sa 6+ years ni gloria so far:
-nag-expand ang negosyo ng mga taipans at tisoys, resulting in the creation of more jobs, directly and indirectly. their businesses also spurred the businesses of their suppliers who also create more jobs.
– real estate development is on the rise again, with a growth rate similar to the growth pre-1997. alam mo ba kung ilang industriya ang umuusad kapag may kino-construct na bahay or building – cement, equipment, bank lending, to name a few
– lalo pang lumalago ang BPO industry dito, employing hundreds of thousands and earning billions of dollars. nung 2001, iilan lang ang jobs sa industry na ito
-government is giving incentives for BPO companies operating outside metro manila. kumalat na ang BPO sa Baguio, Dumaguete, Davao etc. they hire locals. kumalat na rin ang economic benefits
for sure sasabihin mong di pa enough yan. yes, i agree, di pa enough. pero you cannot deny the benefits, yung mga taong umunlad ang buhay kahit in a modest way.
ASIII,
Again, economic figures and peso exchange rates means nothing to the common people…. what they see is higher prices of commodities… gobyerno ang nakaka-benefit lang sa strong peso dahil mas kokonti ang binabayad nila na peso sa foreign loans nila… exporters and OFW’s are hurt by stronger peso currency… importers don’t import that much either, dahil domestic consumption is not expected to rise proportionally due to projected inflation… eg. marami ka pa bang nakikita na gumagamit ng christmas lights sa mga bahay ngayon compared to the previous years…
“real estate development is on the rise again, with a growth rate similar to the growth pre-1997.”
That is a normal reaction kapag banks are only paying 3 to 5% interest on your money… Bakit kaya?
“nag-expand ang negosyo ng mga taipans at tisoys, resulting in the creation of more jobs, directly and indirectly. their businesses also spurred the businesses of their suppliers who also create more jobs.” -ASIII
In short… nag-expand ang mga negosyo nang mga cronies… but I don’t think that, that should count… kasi yun na rin ang sinasabi ko na walang gustong mamuhunan dito na alam nila na playing field is not leveled…
Sinungaling pala ang WB. Biro mo sinuspindi ang loans natin sa infrastructure project dahil sa malaking corruption sa pag-implement nito… wala silang karapatan na gawin yun dahil iniinsulto nila ang leadership ni Gloria who is the most efficient and honest administration by your your standard.
At hindi rin totoo na tumaas ang rank natin sa listahan nang most corrupt countries in the world under GMA… hindi rin totoo na bumaba ang competitiveness rank natin sa mundo under the able leadership ni GMA.
Hindi nangyari ang suhulan sa IMPSA ( inspite of the documents that the Swiss gov’t offered to the gov’t to start prosecuting Nani Perez ); ang pandaraya nang 2004 kahit lahat na na-involve doon sa dayaan for GMA e napromote na ; ang PIDAL scam ; ang ZTE broadband deal; nagsisinungaling si Ed Panlilio sa bribery scandal at doctored videos ang mga brown paper bags na dala ng mga congressman na nakunan sa Malacanang … etc… these are all figments of our imagination…
Matanong ko lang … can you tell the difference if someone is telling the truth or not?
“Again, economic figures and peso exchange rates means nothing to the common people…. what they see is higher prices of commodities…”
higher prices of commodities? sisisihin mo sa gobyerno pa? epekto yan ng free market. ganyan talaga.
ill say it again. di nila ma-feel ang good numbers? they will surely feel the bad numbers!
“gobyerno ang nakaka-benefit lang sa strong peso dahil mas kokonti ang binabayad nila na peso sa foreign loans nila… ”
ayaw mo non?
“exporters and OFW’s are hurt by stronger peso currency…”
ganyan talaga
“importers don’t import that much either, dahil domestic consumption is not expected to rise proportionally due to projected inflation…”
ang galing naman ng premises mo sa conclusion mo – the presence of christmas lights. alam mo, kaya kokonti ang christmas lights ngayon eh dahil takot makabili ng substandard lights na galing China.
“That is a normal reaction kapag banks are only paying 3 to 5% interest on your money… Instead na patulugin mo sa bangko ang pera mo, ipapagawa mo na lang ng bahay o develop a property… baka sakaling may bumili…. May data ka ba kung ilan ang bumibili ngayon ng mga condo units? Ang daming nagpropromo sa mga malls nyan, di ba? Bakit kaya?”
nasa abroad ka ba? kasi baka di mo nakikita na construction is all over Metro Manila. hindi, wala akong data. di ko rin alam kung bakit nagpo-promo sa mga malls.
“In short… nag-expand ang mga negosyo nang mga cronies… but I don’t think that, that should count… kasi yun na rin ang sinasabi ko na walang gustong mamuhunan dito na alam nila na playing field is not leveled…”
tutoo, the playing field is not leveled yet. but many entrepreneurial Pinoys never let the absence of a level-playing field get in the way of success.
wala na – nabulag ka na sa pagkamuhi mo kay gloria. di mo alam, you are also dragging the country down.
“Sinungaling pala ang WB. Biro mo sinuspindi ang loans natin sa infrastructure project dahil sa malaking corruption sa pag-implement nito…”
yes
“wala silang karapatan na gawin yun dahil iniinsulto nila ang leadership ni Gloria who is the most efficient and honest administration by your your standard”
sabihin mo sa WB yan.
saka mali na yan. you are putting words into my mouth. i never said anything to that effect. ikaw kasi, naiba lang ako sa pananaw kay gloria, sasabihin mo nang para sa akin efficient at honest si gloria?
Thats a big statement – the Philippines can be an equally good investment site as China.
“Hindi nangyari ang suhulan sa IMPSA ( inspite of the documents that the Swiss gov’t offered to the gov’t to start prosecuting Nani Perez );”
“Matanong ko lang … can you tell the difference if someone is telling the truth or not?”
i don’t know. can you?
ASIII,
Please read your response again and try to be consistent with your points…
“asus, di mo pa nga nabisita, sasabihin mo nang di accurate. saka eh ano ngayon kung wala silang talaan ng nalugi o umalis na? what for? ”
fyi… i see one almost everyday, ok? unless you do not understand that those website ought to inform the public about the current status of the locators ( parang directory )… then if the company no longer exists, then it should be deleted from the list. kung baga sa comelec, padding ang tawag doon… para magmukhang ang dami-daming locators sa zones, ok?
“higher prices of commodities? sisisihin mo sa gobyerno pa? epekto yan ng free market. ganyan talaga.
ill say it again. di nila ma-feel ang good numbers? they will surely feel the bad numbers! ”
( Scratching my head…. ) ???
Thats a big statement – the Philippines can be an equally good investment site as China.”
You count the hits but not the misses…. of course you will get a rosy picture… Would you mind looking for the total investments in billions of dollars that went to China compared to the investments that went to Philippines at the time that Texas Instrument announced its decision to set up a facility in Clark? And note that you have to subtract the investments that went out of the Philippines and went to China when companies decided to leave here and move to China…
“panahon pa ni erap yan ah. nung time ni perez, implementation na. kumita na si erap nun.”
E bakit si Nani Perez ang nakalagay sa asunto sa Ombudsman na inuupuan hanggang ngayon ni Merciditas Gutierez, inspite of the documents submitted by the Swiss on the $2M bribery case?

What the….? I’m sorry … I will not comment on that anymore… but I am sure that somewhere in your college days, you have studied Philosophy where Logic, Inference and Deduction are parts of the syllabus… or at least you have came across the Scientific Method of Investigation if you are studying Engineering or the Basic Sciences…
“yi… i see one almost everyday, ok?”
no its not ok. you dont visit those sites at all
aber sige nga. prove me wrong – visit their sites and point out which locator stated is no longer around. substantiate the ‘padding!’
“( Scratching my head…. ) ???”
“You count the hits but not the misses….”
ah no! dyan ka nagkakamali. ikaw naman, you just count the misses. i dont deny the misses. ikaw you deny the hits.
“of course you will get a rosy picture… Would you mind looking for the total investments in billions of dollars that went to China compared to the investments that went to Philippines at the time that Texas Instrument announced its decision to set up a facility in Clark?”
if what you were saying is half-true, then Texas Instruments would not even put one dollar here.
“And note that you have to subtract the investments that went out of the Philippines and went to China when companies decided to leave here and move to China…”
the moves to China isnt because of gloria. the moves are in the name of ‘competitiveness’. mas mura ang suweldo sa China kasi. saka mas stable ang politika dun – walang oposisyon kasi. no wonder gusto nilang lumipat dun
“E bakit si Nani Perez ang nakalagay sa asunto sa Ombudsman na inuupuan hanggang ngayon ni Merciditas Gutierez, inspite of the documents submitted by the Swiss on the $2M bribery case?”
di ko alam. tanungin mo si Gutierrez.
“What the….? I’m sorry … I will not comment on that anymore… ”
refuge of one who has nothing to say anymore
“but I am sure that somewhere in your college days, you have studied Philosophy where Logic, Inference and Deduction are parts of the syllabus… or at least you have came across the Scientific Method of Investigation if you are studying Engineering or the Basic Sciences…”
dont worry, i did. obviously you didn’t. di mo napapansin your own findings are neither scientific nor the outcome of a method.
you still insist in not seeing that you are seeking political solutions to purely economic problems. pruo pulitika itong mga sinabi mo –
“Sinungaling pala ang WB. Biro mo sinuspindi ang loans natin sa infrastructure project dahil sa malaking corruption sa pag-implement nito… wala silang karapatan na gawin yun dahil iniinsulto nila ang leadership ni Gloria who is the most efficient and honest administration by your your standard.
At hindi rin totoo na tumaas ang rank natin sa listahan nang most corrupt countries in the world under GMA… hindi rin totoo na bumaba ang competitiveness rank natin sa mundo under the able leadership ni GMA.
Hindi nangyari ang suhulan sa IMPSA ( inspite of the documents that the Swiss gov’t offered to the gov’t to start prosecuting Nani Perez ); ang pandaraya nang 2004 kahit lahat na na-involve doon sa dayaan for GMA e napromote na ; ang PIDAL scam ; ang ZTE broadband deal; nagsisinungaling si Ed Panlilio sa bribery scandal at doctored videos ang mga brown paper bags na dala ng mga congressman na nakunan sa Malacanang … etc… these are all figments of our imagination… ”
