Utter disgust — that is what I felt when I watched the foolishness that happened at the Peninsula Hotel last Thursday. It left me nothing but contempt for the Armed Forces of the Philippines for its overbearing, abusive, illegal and stupid conduct. It was unbecoming an officer and a gentleman, the usual accusatory language in court martial proceedings. The generals and soldiers who participated in that putsch all deserve death by musketry for the murder of the Bill of Rights.
This is no defense of Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV and company, who again acted characteristically as in the Oakwood mutiny four years ago. They rashly walked out of the court trial, marched to the Peninsula Hotel as if they were conquering heroes, made it appear that they were making a last desperate stand to the death against the cohorts of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in defense of their principles. But they in the end acted as usual as defeated malcontents and meekly surrendered to the soldiers.

Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim and Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, a former Navy lieutenant senior grade, are two of the smartest officers in the Armed Forces of the Philippines. They are highly regarded by their men and by their contemporaries in the officer corps. Few senior officers in the Philippine military today can match their popularity among the soldiers. It is significant that they have also led repeated coup attempts against the government of the day. They are not novices in the art of military mutiny….
But, if indeed they were alone in this doomed and foolish adventure, how do we explain the fact that, at the height of the standoff, no military commander, apart from the chief of staff, Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr., came out or was presented to reiterate support for the Arroyo government? Why did the government rely exclusively on police forces to deal with what was openly declared as a bid to remove the existing government? Was Ms Arroyo afraid that, if compelled to declare their loyalty, a good number of the nation’s soldiers might actually side with Lim and Trillanes?
In short, what did the silence of the camps during this six-hour siege signify? I doubt if General Esperon or Ms Arroyo knows. Perhaps if they know anything at all about the state of mind of the soldiers in the camps today, it might be something that is likely to give them sleepless nights in the next few weeks or months. Could this be the real reason for the sudden imposition of a midnight curfew — that they are seriously spooked by the possibility of troop movements quietly taking place in the coming days?
For it is hard to believe that the soldiers barricaded in their barracks would not care less about what was going on in Makati City last Thursday. If they saw what the rest of the nation saw, and they remained silent, I would consider that a meaningful silence. In a time like ours, when images from live media pack more power than the most stirring statements, what might the silence of citizens and soldiers possibly indicate? Are their senses stunned and their will paralyzed? Or are their souls shaken and courage awakened in their hearts? Who knows?

They have abused their power to render revenge to the government that they hate and they are so protective of their own stinking kind that even just a little bit of suppression is for them, unforgivable. Ilang grupo ba ng media organizations na nagpapayaman ang pinoprotektahan ng mga ito. I will not believe that what they do is the fight for truth and justice…mga elitistang garapal sa popularidad. Their opinions are so biased it stink to high heavens.

Yung isang periodista, Isagani Cruz, is a retired Supreme Court justice, and professor of law. Hindi ito ang bayarang justice like Manuel Pamaran.
This is not the guy you can accuse of saying to hell with the rule of law.
Two biased views yes. One biased for the law, the other biased for his discipline (political science). I will take this anytime over the impartial blabbering of Ronnie Puno and Ignoramus Bunye.
It is sad that “intelligent” people like Mr. Isagani Cruz, and so many like him seem to telegraph their support and approval of what Trilya and Danny did, but ONLY had either of the two opted to be “martyrs.” Or, had they “succeeded.”
As I browse along the “brave” comments of prominent (for whatever reasons that they are) columnists, what my very biased personal views could discern is that these people are incapable to differentiate between tend to equate bravery and stupid braggadocio.
Why? If it is not bravery to put ones head on the chopping block more than a few times to effect the changes just about everyone agrees the country needs so desperately, then my biased view is, there is a glimpse of ignorance here, and at worst, deigned “stupidity” somewhere here.
Exactly why the AFP’s highest award the Medal of Valor, is awarded to a SURVIVING soldier who have exhibited courage and gallantry beyond the call of duty, beyond insurmountable odds.
When we have two Medal of Valor awardees incarcerated, NOT for any criminal acts, but for openly defying the amoral reign of a bogus president and a Chief of Staff who earned the position, not out of the virtues and qualifications that make a soldier stand tall, but for helping the subversion of the electorate, then something is terribly wrong here. We not only have a sick system, we have a dead sense of nationhood.
Many just can’t grasp the fact that had Trilya and Danny opted to be shot dead by matapang-lang pag may mga escort na SWAT Geary Barias (stupid braggadocio, he’s got a lot), hell would have been unleashed, because impassioned need to exact vengeance by the AFP, particularly the Scout Rangers and the Marines against the PNP would have been a bloodbath, a one-way street to a full-blown civil strife.
Danny and Trilya did not fail. They wonderfully highlighted that the status quo has to go so majority of suffering Filipinos can have a chance to crawl out of their dire encompassing poverty.
I just hope that the lessons from 1986, 1989, 2003, and 2005, and now the Manila Pen incident, are driven quite clearly – the country’s rusted and falling-apart “democratic” institutions need not a tune-up; it needs a complete overhaul.
“Failures?” Nope. These are perfect lessons for everyone. Faith without action is useless; action without faith is baseless. Or, as Danny succinctly put it – “Dissent without action is consent.”
And blogs and columns are never enough… And Ellen is one very brave person who has been doing something concrete beyond banging the keyboard. Mabuhay ka Ellen.

I do not find it intellegent when we see the actions of Trillanes as just an act of bravery..yes we can give them a little debris but not all, it is not bravery to use the media as your shield, it is not bravery to hide inside the comfort of a posh 5 star hotel and it is not bravery to succumb to authority if you feel your plan is about to break apart. If they are so brave, they should have stood their ground and prepared their small minds for whatever may happen. They should have been ready to die with all the casualties with them and prepare to answer for the judgment in the after life…but no, it was not bravery at all. When the lacrimator was thrown at them, maybe Trillanes was thinking, “I don’t want to die, I still want to become President!”.

The arrest of journalists & the declaring a curfew last Thursday was government’s way of testing the waters for declaring martial law.
Fortunately, we must thank the press & media, like Ms. Ellen Tordesillas, for raising their voices !
It is sad that no one seems to have complained about the imposing of curfew on that day.

I can only comment on the general apathy of most Pinoys by this small story of my friend. She happened to be riding the MRT one afternoon, and a boy by accident (or kalikutan) got his hand caught in the door of the MRT. The boy was screaming, said my friend, and the father tried to get the little boy’s hand out of course. My friend rushed to help and pressed at the emergency button and signaled the driver/pilot to open the door a bit. They were at the second car and it was full but no one (according to my friend) lifted a finger nor yelled to make the pilot hear. They all looked as though it was a movie. Finally, the pilot saw the small commotion and opened the door a bit. End of story.
Unfortunately, we have a government that cries “rule of law” publicly, when all it sees is the only the letter and not the spirit that gave birth to it.
We have a government that reduced the significance of the impeachment proceedings into a mere numbers game. Worse, this is the only government in history, modern or otherwise, to file a case “impeaching” itself for inoculation purposes.
Here is a government that dares its citizens to produce evidence of its wrongdoings when all it needs to do is to prove that it deserves to govern.
Here is a PNP Chief who assures that media practioners caught in the middle of Thursday’s crossfires will not be sued only if these practioners will not sue the Police for violating their rights as human beings. Naman! If these mediamen and mediawomen violated anything, by all means, sue them. The rule of law should be non-negotiable. No one, not even Darius Razon, has the right to think otherwise.

Column or opinion writing must not be mistaken with news reporting. News must be factual while columns must highlight the personal opinion of the writers. Being that, biases are actually to be expected. Wala namang opinyon na hindi biased, e.
Though, I may not agree with the opinion of both Magno and Cunanan, I still respect their right to voice their opinion.
We may be on opposite poles, but I respect your opinion and I support your right to express them.
I can see that is the root of the problem. They always give biased opinions that tend to create division. They should use their power of persuation for peace and reconciliation and not to bring chaos more than we already have. Pero sino ba naman ako para pagsabihan sila, ang sa akin lang Media has a big responsibility and they are walking on a very narrow path…konting tagilid lang..malaki na ang epekto sa bayan, how much more if they are already confortable in being one-sided…..kaya nga kulang sa balanse.
same here ka Enchong, I for one do not read commentaries in order to be swayed by them. I like reading de Quiros for his fluency and eloquence in expressing some of my own views and thoughts about very important issues our country is facing.
De Quiros cannot be a mere reporter yet he is (to me) an eagle of a commentator.

Just like you, I also look for evidences before I pass judgment. Unfortunately, all I see are evidences that real evidences are being suppressed. Ano na nga bang nangyari dun sa whistleblower ng Fertilizer Scam? Nasaan na ang Mayuga report? Ang Provost Marshall report? Ang pirma ni Esperon sa PTA ng kaso nina Gen. Miranda, Col. Querubin, et. al.?

Ang masasabi ko lang, masyado ang build-up kay Trillanes sa blog na ito, ay wala pa namang napapatunayan iyong tao. As senator, dapat magbalangkas na lamang siya ng mga batas na makapag-deter sa mga kalokohan sa gobyerno, hindi iyang ‘coup ng coup attempt’, failure naman.
I agree with you Duren, sa sabi mong ‘Kaya nga ako naghahanap ng ebidensya bago ako manghusga.’ Maalala ko iyong impeachment ni Erap, na galit na galit din ako kay Erap, dahil sa lahat ng mga nababasa ko at naririnig nuon kahit hindi malinaw ang ebidensiya. Iyon lang pala ay ‘demonised’ lang siya at walang ebidensiya. Isa pang halimbawa itong si Allan na sinasabi niya na may German Acct si FG. Between the two “intelligent” views of the country’s leading intellectuals, there is the middle ground where it all started. The Reason Why? Why would a promising young elected Senator risk his Life of an Uncertain bid to make a point if not out of desperation?
And The Silence of the Lambs? Randy David noted in his views that aside from AFP Chief General Esperon, no other Military Man declared public condemnation toward their fellow officers adventurism and that is from the Military known to Jump before their Guns? Strange indeed.
Isagani Cruz noted that the Bill of Rights had been violated, but I also counter that it has been violated no less than by the authorities who had been from the beginning been sworn to uphold them, that is including the highest court of the land, the SC, remember Davide?
I for one never condone any violent or extra judicial means of ever replacing a government so does most or majority of the masses, no matter how corrupt or incompetent it is perceived or in reality, because there are mechanism to correct them. But these mechanism had been abused time and again and in many instances been obstructed and never let take its courses and there are times that shoves come to pushes, people just forget what consequences might be.
Meanwhile the country back in business, everyone busy making a living and the usual politicians are busy spending their loots, some of course, and there will be more Military Officers planning more Adventurism in the Future and some of them bound to be successful and the masses, majority of the people will have to wait and see what fate awaits them…

Thanks to the Garci generals in the likes of asspweron! So how can you even say that this cheating president even follows the law! Can you blame the people if they do not respect this illegal president? It is not the media who distorts facts. It is this illegal president who wnats to control the media and would like only the good things about her governance to be printed. Unfortunately, for a cheating and lying leader who commits blunders and deceit almost everyday, there are just simply too many negative stories to tell. Can you blame the media if they can write about all the bad stuff in the tiyanak’s kingdom?
This may sound funny, but I cannot come up with a personal solid opinion of Senator Trillanes, yet. Not even with what he did last Thursday.
Had he marched, drove, even flew to the Senate, my stand would have been perfectly clear in support of his rights.

The Magdalo group inspired me because of their idealism. The words of Gen Lim in the recent Pen stand-off still echo in my head: “The Die Is Cast”. It is good versus evil.
So for now, I have decided to sign out from this blog for the time being. I have said all I want to say about Gloria & her lap dogs. I believe it is time for action. Even if I am but one, I will do my share because I want a new Philippines; a Philippines that is an honourable country, not a country were the rest of world views it as a trash can. What I may do may end up being stupid, crazy, or it it may even be ridiculed, but I want to stand up for what I believe is the truth. I have taken the side of what I believe is good. Gloria betrayed you, me, my family, your family, our friends, etc.
Many have criticized what Sen Trillanes, Gen Lim, & the rest of the Magdalo group did at the Pen. But you know what ? At least they took a stand & did what they thought was best. Yes, the critics have said that the means does not justify the end, but they had balls. They knew of the possibility of their plan failing, but they took it any way. They took the road less travelled.
Indeed, I take to heart the words of Gen Lim: “Dissent Without Action Is Consent”.

Even if I had some misgivings on their strategy I never had any misgiving or never would I question the validity of their purpose or intent, hence there is no turning around the fact they should be recognized as great and courageous citizens of the republic: they stood up to fight this corrupt Gloria led government, so I go by what you say entirely:

I liken them to Andres Bonifacio, killed by his own because he stood and did what he thought was best.

Noticed this news item in Malaya, “GMA visit starts; Spain eyes railway, energy projects”
One of the biggest proponents for spanish sponsored railway projects in RP for quite some time now are two gentlemen, an uncle and his nephew (don’t know however if the uncle is still alive — last time I spoke to him was in the 90s), both of firm Spanish descent.
These two were involved in defence procurement as well and were sidekicks of then DND chief Angelo Reyes when Reyes signed with UK defence arm Qinetic that’s been privatised recently by PM Gordon Brown for a defence prime contractor agreement with RP that was in my opinion and other defence experts in Europe, hugely overpriced.
I do not know if these two are involved in Gloria’s scheme to tap Spanish railway authorities for her railway project but if they are, then it would be judicious to examine every single cost of even the tiniest bolt and rivet to be supplied under a future contract…
My advice at this point is to be vigilant — there’s bound to be bloated prices, kickbacks, etc. even if for the sake of argument, Spain decides to issue a grant for a Spanish railway in Pinas, the prices of supply will be doubled without any doubt.
I still believe, One Million Warm Bodies parked at the gates of the Whore House (used to be Malacanang Palace) is the answer to rid of Whore Gloria. Madam Whore Gloria Arroyo must pay, she shouldn’t be allowed to skip town with all her crimes against the people. Pilipinos must use her as an example to stop graft and corruption in the govt. Lim and Trillianes took a 50-50 chance that the “Pen” attempt would make it through. They certainly have a back up plan in case of failure. These brave duo did their part. Let us do our part. The momentum has to go on.
For once, Villar said something sensible, that the senate will vote down brenda’s proposal to punish Trillianes. Tengang daga also made a comment that with the “pen” incident, the leadership should start cleansing on their own. At last JDV found his soul! It would be very interesting to see how his removal from the speakership would impact the tiyanak’s hold on power. His removal may even have the same or even stronger intensity as the “Pen” incident. As reported in the press today the Senate and the House of Representatives will hold separate inquiries into what legislators called a high-handed manner by which government forces treated journalists.
Opposition Sen. Manuel “Mar” Roxas II initiated the filing of a resolution for the inquiry which he said will be made in the hope of preventing a repeat of the incident and to hammer out clear rules of engagement regarding the role of the press in such extraordinary political events.
NPC president Roy Mabasa said the NPC will lodge the formal complaint before the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) office in Quezon City.
Mabasa said they want to know who ordered the arrests on mediamen who were merely covering the events inside the hotel.
Mabasa said handcuffing media practitioners with plastic cable strips was a clear violation of human rights and of the Miranda doctrine.
He said the police also arrested the reporters and the crewmen without warrants of arrest.

The Roxas’ resolution should be a full inquiry into the separate functions of the military (APF) and police (PNP) and their rules of engagement would not solve the problem of an AFP trained to kill, but used to police PNP problems.
This is why civilized countries separate their army and police with the army confined to barracks unless to specifically to do their job of preventing invasion from outside the Philippines. The PNP should be left responsible to deal with ALL internal matters of civil law and order.
A full inquiry into the detailed written functions of the AFP & PNP are well overdue. Clearly separate these two agents soonest. Lets stop band-aid governance now, today.

Personal expenses in fact should be separated from official functions like for example when the husband goes on a furlough with some business contacts on a personal level in places where they travel. In fact, there should have been a restriction as to the number of people the idiot should be tagging along with her considering the fact that over 70 percent of Filipinos live below poverty line. She should even stop from taking along her whole clan to foreign visits as when she tagged along even the yaya of her grandchildren to China. Abuso iyan as a matter of fact!

I don’t know about these Senators in Congress and their investigation? Getting tired of their antique behavior and their so called investigation. Surely, nothing ever happen, it seems like they’re always doing the investigation of the crimes being committed and nothing ever happen. The witnesses even ignoring the Senator’s invitation to appear and even with the threatening subpoena, still those witnesses just laughing at the Senator’s faces. They surely have a terrible records of investigation, I feel like they’re just making noise to let the people know that they’re still on the job, yet doing exactly nothing but making priviledge speeches. When are they going to start doing something worthwhile, putting some muscles on their words, and start putting those witnesses to jail if they failed to show up? What have they done actually but make noises, and threaten to investigate. If they’re co-equal branch of govt, they should exercise such power that they supposedly possessed. Or, it is just a waste of the people’s time to even listen to them. How many time have they threaten to subpoena Neri and others for not showing up to the hearing, yet Neri still getting the last laugh and so the Madam Whore Gloria Arroyo at the Whore House (formerly Malacanang Palace). Such a waste!

OK, I’ll take your word for it. But I wonder what could be that something you have done for the community and country? Aside from paying huge taxes? I hope its more than “medical-dental missions” and policy advocacy (nothing wrong with these) I hope it lasts in the medium term at the least, like assistance to education, assistance to farmers, job creation, and foreign direct investments.
I hope you just continue doing something for the community and country, despite gloria’s presence in malacañang. Pinoys deserve all the help they can get, but why deny the help just because gloria is around?
As for ‘the problems that get bigger each day’ – what is the connection of these ‘problems’ to ‘something you have done for the community and country’? Did gloria take away whatever blessings your beneficiaries received from you?

Marami ang nag-aadvice na bago itaas ang VAT, e linisin muna ang pangongolekta…

my statement – “Did gloria take away whatever blessings your beneficiaries received from you?” was my reply to an earlier post who claimed that he/she had been helping the country and the community, but nothing is happening. this led me to ask what kind/s of help has he/she extended to the country and community that gloria might have taken away?
may i remind you, “taxes” in all forms do not qualify as “help coming from people.” “Help” is beyond the call of duty. It is our duty to pay taxes.
