There are a number of things that I don’t like about the politics of former President Fidel Ramos, foremost of which was his coming to the rescue of the beleaguered Gloria Arroyo in June 2006 following the expose of the “Hello Garci” tapes that showed she actively manipulated the result of the 2004 elections in her favor.
But you have to credit him for his sharp political instincts. That’s why his warning last week that “Arroyo’s days are numbered” is both intriguing and disturbing.
Ramos gave his grim assessment of Arroyo’s presidency as he expressed his disgust over the absolute pardon given to former President Estrada who was convicted last September of plunder, a crime punishable with life imprisonment.
Ramos said Arroyo had to pardon Estrada because she is so weak that she would do anything to survive.
Ramos’ disgust of Arroyo’s survival tactic is shared by another administration ally, Sen. Richard Gordon who lamented that his president chose to “survive rather than be right.”
Gordon said, “It’s not even a question of mercy. It’s a question of survival for her. It is a transactional leadership at its purest form.”
Many believe that Estrada’s pardon was rushed to remove from the headlines the latest revelation by Joey de Venecia on the anomalous NBN/ZTE deal which was the alleged $70 million share of Mike Arroyo and GMA’s implied approval of the P200 million bribe to former Romulo Neri by the disgraced Comelec Chief Benjamin Abalos.
Sources privy to the negotiations of the pardon said Estrada was dictating the terms. What Arroyo wanted from Estrada is for him stop funding the protests against her and for the ousted president to rally his loyalists to support the one who engineered his ouster.
Estrada complied in his statement early afternoon Friday when the delivery of the pardon was being delayed. In a statement read by his lawyer, Ed Serapio outside the gate of his Tanay estate, Estrada addressed Arroyo “President” and thanked her for granting him “full, free and absolute pardon midway through her term.” The sentence recognized Gloria’s Arroyo’s term stolen from his dear friend, Fernando Poe, Jr.
This was the clincher that finally made Puno chopper through cloudy skies to deliver the pardon: “I believe I can best continue to repay to out people the blessings that God has so graciously given me by supporting from hereon the programs of Mrs. Arroyo that are intended to attack generational poverty and hunger.”
Arroyo must indeed be desperate to hang on to this assurance by Estrada. If she thinks Estrada’s loyalists will love her because of the pardon, she is hallucinating. The adoration of Estrada’s fans of their idol is not transferrable. In fact, they see the pardon as something that she owes their idol. No thanks to her.
Estrada’s funding of rallies has long been a non-factor among the “protest community”. If he was not able to gather an impressive crowd last September during the Sandiganbayan promulgation, he is not expected to subsidize the gathering of warm bodies for future protest activities. Besides, Edsa One and Two type of protest is already a thing of the past, rally organizers concede.
With her approval rating lower than the basement of Glorietta 2 and almost all democratic institutions tainted and ruined by her, the only group propping her up is the military. But even with the military, she cannot be sure. She may have the loyalty of AFP Chief Hermogenes Esperon (who is due to retire in February 2008) and some contented generals but it is doubtful if she has the respect of the whole armed forces.
A Pulse Asia survey said that in case of a political upheaval, ten percent of the military would support a coup, another ten percent would defend the status quo, and the 80 per cent would look up to heaven and wait for signs on which side to take.
That’s why I find it significant that Esperon through Army Chief Alexander Yano last week dishonorably dismissed 26 of the 40 enlisted personnel pf the Philippine Army who have been in detention for 18 months in Camp Capinpin in Tanay without having been charged of any offense.
The adverb “dishonorably” is more appropriate on the manner the dismissal order was served rather than the military classifaction of the 26 EP’s discharge which was “without honor.”
The Office of the Army Inspector General that investigated the movement of these soldiers in February 2006 had recommended that the three teram leaders, Sgt. Benito S. Baggay, Sgt. Juanito B. Tercero, Jr., and Sgt. Jose Famularcano be reprimanded while the 23 be admonished.
Yet, after having been incarcerated for almost two years without having been charged, they were dismissed “without honor”, a month before Christmas. Aside from the stigma of an dishonorable discharge, the soldiers would also not be getting a single centavo for their many years of service.
An officer who requested not to be quoted, said the harsh action on the 26 soldiers is a message to those maybe enticed to join any activity against the administration.
Which makes us wonder if there is any “activity” being planned. If Gloria Arroyo is so weak that she has to seek support from her number one nemesis, Estrada, that realization must be disturbing for people who derive power from her like Esperon and National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales. Without Arroyo, saang kangkungan sila pupulutin?
I remember reading some news item about a fortune teller predicting the same — not too sure where but he said FPJ would win but would not serve term and Gloria would not make it to end of term or something similar.
Hah! I wish his prediction about Gloria not making it to end of term would come true.
10% would support a coup d’état? That would be 12 thousand more or less for toppling Gloria I suppose and 12,000 trying to cancel them out.
I’m still not in favour of a military coup — would much rather have a snap election and if that’s not possible, civilians should egg her out of Malacanang.
Don’t trust many in the military today who are colonel and above colonel rank. Those below the colonel rank are too many and they would be fighting among themselves for choice positions, formula for disaster.
Anna, I don’t think there’s really a move to stage a coup by reformist military. I also know that they themselves don’t want to run the government. They know that they don’t have the training to govern.
The ones who would be compelled to stage a military takeover are the ones who want to preserve their power. It would be saving like a “God save the queen” operation. That’s what the public should watch out against.
“With her approval rating lower than the basement of Glorietta 2…”
Hahahaahh! Ang sarap ng tawa ko!
“The adoration of Estrada’s fans of their idol is not transferrable.”
Very true, just like karma…non-transferable.
“The ones who would be compelled to stage a military takeover are the ones who want to preserve their power. It would be saving like a “God save the queen” operation. ”
Oh is that so, Ellen? Then by all means, we should ALL watch out for these rogue elements. Maybe, Esperon is already training an elite group somewhere… gotta be up on our toes. Darn, if they win, it will be just like in Burma!
Re: Which makes us wonder if there is any “activity” being planned.
Here’s my prediction after Erap’s pardon:
Give Erap two to three weeks. Babanat na naman iyan kay GMA. So what did GMA get? Natauban lang niya panandali ang
issues ng bribery at ZTE. Pero babalik din iyan pagkatapos ng Undas. This is the witching hour.
I see Vic-Toh-Ree in her coming down..and going down, down under..
Cocoy: paano ang gusto mo sa lechon? well done or cremated?
..Ellen’s mention of “warm bodies” reminded me of her book about Estrada: “Hot Money, Warm Bodies”..I still have a copy and also that of “Eraptions”.
Maarte: Sana nga..magdilang anghel ka.
Rose,
That would be fun!
Chi: Good afternoon, di pumasok yung isang entry.
They are all suffering from this deadly disease. Leverage. Majority of the Politicians used leverage so much without knowing its ill effect. Think about it.
Leverage works wonders on the way up but can be brutal on the way down.
I think the reformist group the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) won’t stay neutral in case of people’s uprising against the corrupt Arroyo regime. They must side with the people as citizen-soldiers, protector of the people and the State. It does not necessarily means the AFP reformist group will stage a coup d’état or lead a military-civilian junta.
Totie,
Naka-word monitor na naman siguro ang Ellenville.
Aah! Talaga, “…leverage can be brutal on the way down”. At this point, Gloria is in no position to dictate the terms of her survival.
“Sources privy to the negotiations of the pardon said Estrada was dictating the terms.”
Well, let’s see in the coming days if Erap keeps such position. Kung ganyan pa rin, I’m gonna dump him. But, I still expect him to go back to his fighting stand of calling for her resignation. Pakagat lang siguro ngayon kasi kapa-pardon lang.
MANILA, Philippines — Former President Joseph Estrada Sunday distanced himself from fresh calls for the resignation of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo sparked by the pardon she had granted the disgraced leader convicted of plunder.
“It’s the people — the poor sector which is the largest part of our society who should choose and decide who they want to run or replace the government, not the few elitists and the churchmen,” Estrada told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company of INQUIRER.net, by phone.
Maarte: hindi ba it was the”few elitists and the churchmen” who threw him and supported GMA? Ano ang nangyari sa kanya? Now that he was pardoned fully couldn’t he just keep a distance and care for his mother? Napardon na siya let’s keep going and moving..”why should only Gloria have the fun”?
Move on? Of course…but Erap seems to be moving back from his previous position of calling for GMA’s resignation. Diyan lang ako inis.
Anyway Rose, here’s my prediction after Erap’s pardon that I posted in another thread:
Give Erap two to three weeks. Babanat na naman iyan kay GMA. So what did GMA get? Natauban lang niya panandali ang
issues ng bribery at ZTE. Pero babalik din iyan pagkatapos ng Undas. This is the witching hour.
Sa Halloween Night lalabas ang mga multo and for GMA “this is the witching hour” as you said at sa dami ng issues labeled on her..walang katapusan ang parada ng mga multo niya..far and beyond Oct. 31. Ang sabi nga just for her to survive..”survival of the fittest”? is she fit to be president..yon ba ang sinabi ni OJ na if “it fits acquit?”
I remember one time when Bishop Tobias officiated a mass for Erap and announced Erap was innocent so must be freed.
maarte: yon na nga..that is why I really don’t blame many who leave the catholic church..mali mali rin ang mga sinasabi. and it gives me an excuse to be “mali mali rin” tingnan mo na sulat ko sa taas na sabi OJ, hindi ata tama ang dapat “if it does not fit acquit” I teach CCD and I am really extra careful with what I say particularly in matters of faith..Look they are now calling for people power..wala nang naniniwala..bata ka pa seguro but do you know the story of The Boy who called Wolf? Ganyan ang nangyayari sa kanila..pathetic.
Just wondering..Gokusen hope everything is ok..Take care!
Of course I remember the story “The Boy who called Wolf”. The Boy was Joey De Venecia and the Wolf was Abalos or Mike Arroyo.
Rose and maarte;
Hehehehe! I love your good debate on the issue,it makes a healthy discussion.
I reserve my right to alter my comment later.Go on!
maarte: that is the modern version of the Boy and the Wolf..come to think of it mukhang quiet si Abalos..seguro puno ng rolls of pera ang tabako niya..can not talk when the mouth is full..so is Mike Arroyo..nawala ata ang mike niya o quiet kasi still dreaming of sino na nga – endi ko na alam 4get ko na…si FVR nagsalita na..upos na ang tabako niya..roll out the batrel..roll out the barrels of funds..
..malapit na ang pasko..roll out the barrels of fund..kayakan ang ating simbahan ang mga kum paris ko nag aantay for the Lady in White with barrels of funds…
Si Abalos busy sa golf sa Wack Wack while Mike Arroyo’s mike is being used by Vicky Toh. Raul’s doctor made a mistake of transplanting the kidney to his puwet. Kaya hindi daw makadumi si Raul ngayon. FVR says Raul’s days are numbered. I hope this is clear to you Rose and other bloggers. Any more question?
Punggok knew full well that the concept of her illegal power is fragile and could easily be undermined. She’s worried about the dangers that lay ahead. As we move into Undas, Christmas>/i> and New Year. Let’s hope and pray that our political focus will soon shift toward positive result in preserving liberty and individual responsibility and away from authoritarianism. The future of our next generation depends on us.Let us not forget the dream of Jose Rizal and Bonifacio Marshal depends on keeping alive the spirit of liberty.
The good news is that numbers are growing who are dissatisfied with the illegal president.More Pinoys than ever before are very much aware of what’s going on in Malacanang and how, on a daily basis, their rights and liberties are being undermined. The large majority of Filipinos are sick and tired of being taken advantage. The majority knows Punggok programs fail to achieve each goals and waste huge sums of money. A smoldering resentment against the unfairness of government efforts to force equality on us can inspire violence, but instead it should be used to encourage an honest system of equal justice based on individual not collective rights. Sentiment is moving in the direction of challenging the status quo of the state. The Internet brigade of Ellenville has given hope to millions who have felt their voices were not being heard. And this influence is just beginning. The conventional government propaganda no longer control the information now available to anyone with a computer. Yuko can rest assured that internet hackers will not prevail.
Estrada’s refusal to join calls fro Arroyo to step down is part of the deal. But then, who needs Estrada now?
Maganda nga yun at least when Gloria falls, he cannot claim to be part of it. He is also out.
To me, Estrada’s alliance with GMA is part of a national cleansing process.
Magkasabay natapos si Erap at Gloria, no doubt. Both of them have no more enough clouts to influence Pinas politics.
Maarte: Thanks for the clarification. Buhay pa pala si siraulo..yong kasimanwa ko..mahaba talaga ang buhay..that is where I really believe in God’s loving mercy and unconditional love giving all the chance to say..Lord I am sorry..
Cocoy: I am glad to hear that many Filipinos now know the real state of the country..You see, I am quite frustrated with my own friends who just don’t seem to care..kasi comfortable ang buhay nila..at wala ng paki sa Pilipinas..sad indeed.
Luz: who do FVR and company have in mind? I hope not JdV; nor Enrile and heavens forbid not him..
Rose,
Luzviminda, if you meet Chavit Singson, can you please ask him whatever happens to his threat to split with GMA if Erap’s pardoned? Thanks.
Kejotee, walang Pari sa INK. Ang tawag sa kanila mga Ministro. Don’t be confused.
INK is very good at maneuvering behind the scene. And they’re pretty successful at it. Anyway, let me share with you this piece about INK’s meddling even in judiciary:
The powerful Iglesia ni Cristo has come out in the open not only to prevent Sandiganbayan Justice Gregory Ong from being appointed to the Supreme Court but also to have him unseated from the anti-graft court.
The petition to disqualify Ong from the Sandiganbayan, now pending in the Pasig Regional Trial Court, was filed by lawyer Ferdinand Topacio, who happens to also be an Iglesia counsel.
According to the grapevine, Ong caught the ire of the Iglesia hierarchy after the Sandiganbayan justice convicted military colonel Victor Danao, husband of Pilar Manalo, who happens to be a sister of Iglesia Executive Minister Erano Manalo.
Mrs. Danao is herself esteemed within the Iglesia hierarchy in her own right, being the composer of a number of Iglesia hymns.
According to the grapevine, Topacio is being helped in his legal research by a number of Iglesia lawyers in preparation for the oral arguments scheduled this week before Judge Leoncio Janolo Jr.
Ong, on the other hand, is being defended by former Senator Rene Saguisag, who, like Janolo, is also from the San Beda law school.
Topacio, on the other hand, is a graduate of the University of the East.
Politics indeed makes for strange bedfellows. Erap and Gloria together could unite both the EDSA Dos forces and the Anti-Gloria forces, together with most of the Church hierarchy. The military is only clear that they will not lead a coup, (except maybe for Esperon who may do anything for his “President”). We now have to see the reactions of Erap’s masa, this may take a while. But Ramos’ remarks seem to indicate that he realizes that a realignment of forces is now going on. Countdown begins.
maarte,
Luz: do you think Chavit will sing a song?..interesting. I was surprised once when I went home to hear a good friend mentioned that Erap daw compared to FVR ay santo. And each time when I visited an aunt at Fort City, I wondered kon bakit ibinenta ang Fort Bonifacio at kung kasama si FVR sa bentahan and I heard some one na tokaya ko lives there? I had fond memories of Fort Bonifacio at nanghinayang ako. And at that time too, the only scandal I heard wherein he was linked was the Amari case, which I read in Ellen’s book and which I heard when Ellen was interviewed. I can’t wait to hear Chavit sing…and to hear FVR say “he is singing my song.”
Luz, you mentioned about Singson’s possible hiring a killer to harm Erap. He may just do that. Think about the many people including that auditor Chan he ordered killed. Erap must be careful and beef up his security. As far as I know, Erap’s given 10 bodyguards. Eh si Singson doble ang bodyguards niya.
Singson’s vehicle is bullet and bomb proof. Since Erap is now a free man, he might be tempted to roam around the country. Despite all what they say about Erap, I personally care for this guy. Ingat lang siya…
I am truly amazed in how INK operates..tahimik lang pero controlled..sayang hindi ganyan ang catholic church..
Rose, Singson can’t sing without a mike (arroyo). Singson needs a Mike to be heard.
I myself am fascinated by this INK, rose. The way they operate and influence the government with utmost secrecy. May magagalit na naman at sasabihin why we have to give value to this INK. Well, we’re not giving any value to this church. INK is just among the many cults in this world. Some of the identifying marks of a cult are: Brainwashing before membership, believing they’re the only true church and only members can be saved, and submission to its leader.
Rose,
It is during FVR’s time that the Bases Conversion Development Authority(BCDA) was put up. Maski pabahay man lang.
Did you hear about those Army Scout Rangers that were recently discharged given only P5,000 each by the army? If I’m not mistaken, these soldiers were among those charged in the coup and now discharged. Many don’t even know how to start their lives. The army might recommend some to work as bodyguards of VIPs. How can they be blamed for committing crimes to feed their families? On the other hand, busog na busog ang mga Heneral ni GMA.
I agree with Mr. Carandang, Erap’s pardon was really more of a “pardon me” thing.
That sin was the mother-of-all sins in Pinas. It’s not worth it.
Impeach me…bribe me…pardon me…next is kill me.
Dandaw, kaya nga minadali ang pagpatalsik kay Erap noon gawa din ni FVR because Erap was then in the process of digging up FVR’s scams and anomalies.
Mukhang tahimik ang mike ni Singson..baka nag rerecharge ng baterya o baka nag babible study..I can’t wait for them all to fight one another..labo labo at sana ang ma hipit si GMA-yon ang tunay na “survival of the fattest” wala silang laban sa “fattest pig”. “hang hipis na hipit sa finto sunog na sunog ang fakfak at piping pipi. Vic-toh-rious tayong lahat..ang to Joe V III “give us vic-toh-ree joe” keep talking we are all listening..
..re the 5,000 pesos given..ilang pandesal ang mabibili..at may ipalaman ba..kahit man lang star margarine..kung walang pangtulak itulak at tirisin na lang ninyo ang Hipis
I think Erap’s pardon is conditional and not unconditional. If he will say against Gloria baka mabawi pa yun pardon. When I saw him on TV with Sec. Puno mukhang gusto na talaga ng tao lumaya very excited siya.
Si Chavit ang de facto governor for life.
I think Erap’s pardon is conditional and not unconditional.
We need to close the book on Erap and need to look for a worthy pony in a horseshit who can unify the opposition, he’s an old carabao who’s strength is going down that can barely pull the plow. Erap received what he probably most desired.Certainly it is impossible to imagine Erap’s latest career without the immediate actions of those who caused his downfall in his turbulent political career,he must surely have learned that political power bolstered by a loyal military chief-of-staff was a tool of surpassing flexibility. he learned the lesson that the foundation of political influence was wealth,it was obvious that military might required political skill and that effective mechanics of crowd control.he learned the lesson from his doubted genuis. Those who love to oust the person who ousted him as their hero can never accept the concept of a benevolent dictator.Yet Erap’s greatness far outweighs those of the many petty politicians who, attempted to control the fate of our country in their own time.It is difficult to drag Erap down to earth to judge him impartially with them. History will search for the man behind the legend.
Ms Tordesillas,
Did you mean adverb?
I hope the countdown won’t turn out to end sometime in 2010. Anyway, we are already witnessing events that may really shortcircuit Aling Gloria’s imagined mandate.
Kung anong countdown man yan…sana hindi na naman isang people power/coup or juntas. I would support snap election, impeachment, or ways within the bounds of the constituion if we seek way to remove her….its the only way democratic.
Sabi nga nila “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
Tama ito thats why I believe everyone should think twice in staging another revolution, and remember how EDSA 1 and 2 made our country sink into mud even deeper.
Sana magkaroon ng trick or treat dyan sa Malacañang.
iyong larong baliw-baliwan (bulol)
tapos nagkalat ang mga toy gun.
o bahay bahayan na container van?
Agree with you, duren. However, a snap election can only come on the wings of Aling Gloria’s and Noli’s resignations- malabo pa sa sabaw ng pusit mangyari yan. I am personally pinning my hopes on impeachment. If she gets impeached, baka luminaw ng kaunti ang resignation- sabaw na lang ng sinigang, hehehe.
cocoy Says:

I think Erap’s pardon is conditional and not unconditional.
—Correct ka cocoy. At least two things in the agreement show that the pardon is conditional: 1. Not to run for public office again. 2. Forfeitures of assets. If it’s unconditional, nothing would be added except the pardon.
As a matter of fact, the bulk of that failed Edsa Tres was composed mostly of the two groups’ members. From then on, the two often issued joint statement. With their wide loyal followers, it would be difficult to displease them given the
loss of voice from the Catholic Church. Kahit na isang grupong Katoliko din ang El Shaddai, it operates and decides on its own. The two would remain to be powerful forces in the future unless the two cult leaders go their separate ways.
MANILA, Philippines — Two influential religious groups have expressed support for the pardon granted by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to her deposed predecessor Joseph Estrada, a move that has met harsh criticism from most Catholic bishops.
“The pardon will significantly help in promoting national unity and political stability that out country and people badly need to improve our economic and social condition,” a Malacañang release quoted a joint letter dated October 26 from Mike Velarde of the El Shaddai and Bienvenido Santiago of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC).
The two said they hoped the country’s leaders “will take the action as a positive step toward healing and reconciliation,” and should now join hands to move the country forward.
The countdown to goria’s downfall is getting louder and louder. There are additional FIVE reasons why the downfall will speed up:
5. Mikey Arroyo and Jinggoy Estrada agreeing to star in the local movie version of Brokeback Mountain.
4: Joseph Estrada and Mike Arroyo deciding to play golf together regularly.
3: Gloria Arroyo and Loi Ejercito start calling each other ‘Mare’
2: Luli Arroyo and Jude Estrada start calling each other Sis!
1: Gloria Arroyo appointing Joseph Estrada as Anti-Plunder Czar!
Erap and Mike Arroyo play golf together. GMA and Loi Estrada now attend mass together. Vicky Toh and Laarni Enriquez go shopping together. Mickey Arroyo and Jinggoy have a drinking spree. Luli and Jude secretly go dating. Chavit Singson and JV Ejercito go on target shooting practice together.
Erap was pardoned..tapos ang kwento..end of story..a thing of the past..and let him live happily ever after in their kingdom..GMA and he can now play together ln that kingdom.
The kingdom will be inaugurated October 31,2007- Halloween Night..I just wonder..sasali ba ang lahat ng citizens of the Philippines? It is all up to us to decide..
lumabas na,lumalabas pa and seguro marami pang lalabas na ghost stories at sana hindi tigilan ang pagkwento sa mga multo nila..ZTE, Hello Garci, Burgos case, Joc-Joc Bolante, at marami pa..so let us just keep moving but I hope we all agree not to be used and played with..gasgas na ang katarungan,,puro na lang kahirapan, maraming namatayan, the leaders that we have been waiting ay nasakulungan, guarded by an ass at alam natin na mabagal ang ass sa lahat ng mga hayop..so I guess we have to be participate in the change of our country..
Yes. The case is closed as far as Erap’s pardon is concerned.
But I still know the guy would hit back at her someday. Hindi muna ngayon. You are all invited pala at Malacanang at Holloween Night. The invitation is being extended by Medy Poblador.
Pwe!
..what shall we do when we all out and fight for the change? I read in a news item a while ago, that Chief Justice Puno was asked to head the interim gov’t but he turned it down and asked that the judiciary be left independent..is it independent now, Mr. Puno? Hindi ba Punong Puno sa mga injustices? Siya lang pa ang possible candidate to head it? many of us here can put their worth..many have good ideas..marami din ang fake,,marami din ang walang respect..but with due respects to all, with malice towards none..let us work together and end this kingdom of GMA now helped by her Pare..while we would like to consider the churchmen..bishops, priests, etc. I regret to say that you seem to be consistent only in your inconsistency..can we expect a firmer stand not tainted with money? Sana po!
Ka Enchong, thanks for the correction. I’ve corrected it.
Rose,
You’re right! Or shall we say, the must inconsistent thing about politics is that it is consistent.
The Nobel Peace Prize 2008
We respectfully propose to The Norwegian Nobel Committee to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2008, in alphabetical order, to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Joseph “Erap” Ejercito Estrada and Ronaldo Puno for their efforts to create peace and national reconciliation in the Republic of the Philippines. The three nominees have worked hard to establish a political democratic atmosphere and firm repect for majesty of the Law (following the dictum of “justice delayed is justice denied”)
For the past decade, the conflict the “Pro Erap” forces (the “masa” ) and the “Pro Gloria” (the ruling elite), has been among the most irreconcilable and menacing in Philippine politics. The parties have caused each other great suffering.
By negotiating the The Presidential Pardon For Erap , and subsequently following it up with the quick pardon after six (6) weeks from the conviction of Erap by the Sandigan Bayan, Arroyo,Estrada and Puno have made substantial contributions to a historic process through which peace and cooperation can replace a bitter political feud and possibly a dangerous civil war and hate among Filipinos.
In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel wrote that the Peace Prize could be awarded to the person who, in the preceding year, “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations”.
The proposed award of the Nobel Peace Prize for 2008 to Arroyo, Puno and Estrada is intended to honor a political act which called for great courage on both sides, and which has opened up opportunities for a new development towards fraternity in the Philippines.
It is our hope that the Committee will give the award to these great Filipinos to serve as an encouragement to all the Filipinos of different political persuasions who are working to establish lasting peace in this important country in the strategic ASIAN region.
The Profiles of the Proposed Nobel Peace Prize Awards for 2008
1) President Gloria Arroyo: She has declared the Philippines as the most democratic country in our region. “We have no tolerance for human rights violations at home or abroad.” GMA Speech in the UN General Assembly;Sept.28,2007
2)Ex- President Joseph Estrada:He served more than six years in detention — six years and six months to be exact. First in an air-conditioned suite at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City, and then at his own well-appointed rest house in Tanay town, outside Manila .
3)Secretary Ronaldo Puno :The Peacemaker between President Gloria Arroyo and President Joseph Estrada. He isis arguably one of the most successful campaign managers in Philippine politics. He supported the presidential bids of eventual winners Ferdinand Marcos,Fidel Ramos,Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
PS:JOKE only (trick or treat !)
Equalizer,
May be a joke to you, me and everybody but knowing how the men around Gloria react, I see them perfectly capable of nominating Gloria for the reasons you expounded in your nomination spiel — anything to get media mileage and bury a scandal. Heh!
Ka Enchong is right. Snap election is possible if both Gloria and de Castro resign or I believe that’s not forthcoming unless she’s forced to resign.
However, I’m going to sign the petition to add my voice to those who reject her, to let her know that she’s considered nothing but a stinking ‘pusit’ by her fellow citizens.
“3)Secretary Ronaldo Puno :The Peacemaker….”

The Peacemaker. Isn’t that the name of an ICBM? Kayang pumatay ng maraming tao?
AdeBrux:I emailed the proposed Nobel Prize 2008 to the Norwegian Peace Prize Committee in Oslo.
They immediate replied:”Only in the Philippines…lol”

Maarte: Magsusuot si Medy ng witch suit? FVR was interviewed on the news just a few minutes ago regarding his recent comments on GMA. FVR said he is not joining groups who are asking GMA to resign because the alternative will be anarchy & he will never be for anarchy.
FVR was the one who saved GMA’s Titanic from sinking. Now, he’s at it again. I have lost my respect for this man. He should just focus on chewing his tobacco.
I like how Manuel Quezon III describes FVR in his blog. He says:
“Estrada is now to the opposition what FVR is to the ruling coalition -a decoration, a receding symbol of past mistakes but not a key to a better future or an obstacle to more meaningful change.”
Great description !
The alternative to GMA’s non-resignation is armed intervention. is that better?
“FVR was the one who saved GMA’s Titanic from sinking.”-Chabeli
GMA’s Titanic is unsinkable because it is not at the sea,it is grounded in the middle of the desert and you can hear GMA at the bow shouting: “Let’s move on”
CHAB:let’s relegate to the dustbin of Phlippine history the following infamous Presidents:Marcos/Ramos/Estrada/Gloria.
As far as I’m concerned, there were only two Great Filipino Presidents:MLQ and RM.
“The alternative to GMA’s non-resignation is armed intervention. is that better?ELLEN”
No! The losers will be the people.
Whoever wins in an armed confrontation will be deposed eventually in the same way.(Like in Liberia, from one colonel to another colonel to another colonel).
It will be,for sure, a vicious downward spiral for ALL of us!
BUT,GLORIA must resign!
GPS, I agree that GMA’s Titanic is “grounded in the middle of the dessert”, but it is a dessert that is devoid of anything moral, spiritual, or principled for that matter. She does like to shout her now-infamous line, “Let’s move on”. But I have always wondered, move to on to where ?
The Equalizer, I join you in relegating “..to the dustbin of Phlippine history the following infamous Presidents:Marcos/Ramos/Estrada/Gloria.” But in my books, Gloria tops the list. She has become the Philippines’ WMD (weapon of mass destruction) !
With the recent comments of FVR, the only angle I see that is positive is that the lines are being drawn. We are witnessing who is for the country & who is not.
With the recent comments of FVR, the only angle I see that is positive is that the lines are being drawn. We are witnessing who is for the country & who is not.Chabelli
So the line in the sand has been drawn at long last?
GLORIA/Erap/FVR/The whole palace gang/Pidal Clan versus the
People of The Philippines.
Re: Ellen’s “The alternative to GMA’s non-resignation is armed intervention. is that better?”
Very difficult to answer. Not a question of “better” but would it be less worse for the Filipino people if there were an armed intervention?
The answer is YES but depending on what we mean by “armed intervention.”
Armed intervention could mean a component of the military forcing Gloria to resign at gunpoint. Is that better? Don’t believe so because inevitably, there will be a skirmish between her guards, loyalists and the armed interventionists. There will be collateral damage eventually.
Armed intervention pitting military components against each other is never a good solution — it will wreck the democratic institutions and will sow chaos among the citizenry. In the end, the military will want to put order and end up holding the reins of power. Is that good? I don’t know but at this point, I don’t believe so. I don’t trust our military enough to trust that they would be able to do what Thai military did in Thailand — a bloodless coup.
I picked this up from a letter-sender:
Thank you, Madam President, for taking the ghost of Joseph Estrada off our shoulders. For so long, we in the anti-GMA camp had to suffer the blanket label of being pro-Erap in our actions. Now, we can oppose your unconstitutional actions without being accused of being “mga bayaran ni Wristband.” Now, we can call for your resignation without being asked “Bakit, gusto mong ibalik uli sa kapangyarihan si Erap?”
Not only don’t I trust them enough to be able do do a bloodless coup if and when an armed intervention becomes necessary to throw out Gloria or force her to resign, I don’t trust their capability to run the country efficiently or serve as interim rulers while the citizenry wait for democracy to be restored.
Alluding to the civil society who supported goria to oust erap, here’s a rejoinder from the same letter-sender:
Thank you, Madam President, for slapping the faces of the middle force who supported you for the sake of “moving on” despite your numerous crimes to the country. What a tragic irony it is to see their favorite whipping boy Erap now freely partying in Polk Street upon command of their anointed savior. What a tragic irony it is that by chanting the mantra of moving on, the country took a step back in the fight against plunder, corruption and bad governance.
I must admit that the thought of “armed intervention” has crossed my mind, especially during times when the options to an alternative to “GMA’s non-resignation” comes to light. If there was to be an armed intervention & majority of the people will not support it, obviously, it will not succeed; there is also the thought that, like to what The Equalizer says, “Whoever wins in an armed confrontation will be deposed eventually in the same way.”
One possible alternative to “GMA’s non-resignation” right now is called a bullet. Just one bullet. But then again, are majority of the people okay with a Noli de Castro presidency ? Does the anti-Gloria, for the nth time, go back to the dawing table & restrategize ? I don’t think so. There are enough to strike Gloria down; there is an alternative to her. A leader will emerge. At the right time.
The Equalizer, yes, the lines have been drawn.
Equalizer (11:27pm), your point is like the parting shot of the letter I picked up:
Thank you, Madam President, for uniting behind your administration the Estradas, the Marcoses, your various kaKAMPIs and cronies, and the other forces fighting for the preservation of the corrupt status quo. Now, the battle lines are clearly drawn. And it is time for the true opposition who believes in the fight for genuine societal change to unite and take the fight to your door.
Excuse me…I meant “While there was silence before his pardon …”.
Broadbandido, these church leaders are also hypocrites. It’s not only limited to the Catholic Church. INK used to attack the Catholic Church. INK attacked Catholic’s teachings and practices. By joining with El Shaddai in issuing a statement (not once but many times), isn’t INK one in spirit with the Catholic Church?
Now we hear people using armed intervention as an alternative to a change.
Chabs,
FVR has made a stand: not to do anything. If only he could be more constructive instead of sowing intrigues, i.e., anarchy, he would be more useful.
His non-stand is what’s keeping Glora alive too today and not the perceived irrelevance of Erap. FVR is really so stupid — why doesn’t he propose solutions instead of fencesitting! He could be a real dumbo at times that tabako is.
“The alternative to GMA’s non-resignation is armed intervention. Is that better?
I go for it. We don’t expect Gloria Arroyo and Noli De Castro to resign. An armed intervention is a quick fix to stop two more years of thieving GMA regime and voodoo economics. I believe that the majority of the Filipino will support such drastic move by AFP reformist group. Huwag ng patagalin sa nakaw na kapangyarihan. Patalsikin na !
Is there difference between armed intervention and armed revolution? I thought we’re all for peaceful intervention. It will be civil war. And the victims will be the civilians. All it takes is one willing to die to remove this evil woman. Sino naman siya? I’m sure no one here in this blog.
Chabs, Equalizer,
Maybe, just maybe, the ‘armed interventionist’ should be Erap, what say you two? When he does that, I’m all for building statues everywhere in his Tanay ranch.
“Conservatives Now Control CBCP; Bishops Won’t Join Resign-GMA Calls:NEWBREAK”
Neocons everywhere!
AdeBrux:I propose an ERAP statue in front of the house of each of his special ladies (excluding Mareng Loi). How many will that be?
The Equalizer,
Am pretty sure his statues in those houses are already existing…
If El Shaddai makes a stand, the CBCP is not far behind.
It’s sad but expected…the opposition is cracking. Makati Mayor Binay is not happy with Erap’s change of attitude towards GMA. This question is now being asked from all corners of the country. But I still believe that Erap would be back on his fighting form. It’s like a chess game. It’s like playing cards. You don’t show what you have and plan to do.
To show his deep gratitude to GMA for her pardon, Erap should reserve a space beside his for GMA. Di ba maganda kung magkatabi sila?
ERAP appeared in a lot not-so-memorable B movies.
These are some of his more famous ones:
1)Kung Hindi ka Susuko (1963)
2)Kapit sa Patalim (1962)
3)Ako’y Magbabalik (1966)
4)Machonurin (1983)
5)Tama na, Erap (1974)
6)Tatak: Double Cross (1968)
7)Blood Compact (1972)
Which is the one most apt for a movie title for the Gloria/Erap Pardon Me Movie?
my personal choice:no.7
Ans, even in Malacanan ! Hahahhhha.
Maybe you need more convincing…

”Countdown to Arroyo’s Downfall”
Who would not suspect that a deal was struck? Erap should have waited a bit longer before seeking pardon. But then, it could be for some other personal reasons like the health condition of his mother. Anytime soon she will return to the Lord.
maarte Says:
“..At least, we’re not talking of thousands of lives lost. One or two lives is worth the risk. Pero sino?”
I beg to disagree, for me there’s no difference with 1 or 2 lives or a thousand lives. We are talikng of human lives here. For me, thats a “no deal”. There are other ways… with no lives lost.
…”Here we go round the mulberry bush!” Will Dubya help?
Controlled Bishops in Controlled Philippines?
… “dollar, dollar you may wander, from one hand to another, is it fair, is it fair? when you see me standing here” anybody remember that game?
Ellen says: “The alternative to GMA’s non-resignation is armed intervention. is that better?”
Ellen has been quite clean on this. Don’t think she means it’s gonna come from the Men of Honor, it’s from Esperon and his lackeys.
I agree, that it is Esperon who is quite possibly thinking of armed intervention. The Tanay detainees and the Magdalo have been quite clear in their stand: they will not lead nor participate in a coup, if such a coup is intended to grab power for the military or for GMA.

“Hello, John Major”
My statement: “The alternative to GMA’s non-resignation is armed intervention. is that better?” is to stress that the call for Arroyo and De Castro’s resignation and the holding of a snap election within 60 days is still the best alternative for us, as of now. It’s peaceful and constitutional. That’s why I’m supporting that.
No one here, as far as I can glean, is supporting armed intervention. I am warning against armed intervention that could come from those who are in danger of losing power.
Read again this last parargraph of my posted article:
Which makes us wonder if there is any “activity” being planned. If Gloria Arroyo is so weak that she has to seek support from her number one nemesis, Estrada, that realization must be disturbing for people who derive power from her like Esperon and National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales. Without Arroyo, saang kangkungan sila pupulutin?
Now THAT is clear. Huwag ninyo namang isubo si Ellen sa misinterpretation na armed intervention na ngayon ang itinutulak niya, which is the opposite.
Let’s be prudent and more careful with what we attribute to the people here, especially Ellen.
We don’t want this blog shut down for espousing violence and rebellion, do we?
Kung yong NPA are well armed and well oiled ay di nga kaya ang chain of command, there is no such thing or plan that can topple her now. Two governments were toppled or nearly three without armed interventions or written petitions. So its always better to talk out loud whats in our minds and hope by now all ears are clean to listen.
It might interest those pseudo investigators on the mall blast the no ship ever exploded due to diesel fumes. Every seaman and even passengers could say that the vessel reeks of diesel fumes. How much more when the rough seas becomes eggbeaters to the thousands of tons diesel and there are lots of fire sources everywhere, the electricity all over and switches, sparking motors turning. The less careful mariner would even throw the butts into the centina.

Tagumpay na nagniningning;

Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati’t pagsinta,
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo;
Aming ligaya na pag may nang-aapi
Ang mamatay nang dahil sa iyo.
This is one way of telling “half-truths” with subtlety and innocence.
The question should have been…
1. Pinakamahal na 5km highway sa buong mundo;
2. Pagnakaw sa budget para sa pataba ng mga magsasaka;
3. Marines’ Beheading;
4. Forced Disappearances, extra-judicial killings, state-sponsored terrorism;
5. ZTE-NBN Anomalous Deal;
6. Prostitution of ALL supposedly Independent Institutions
7. Transformation of LGUs into a Cabal of Swindlers
8. At marami pang iba.

Can you expect those living in a squatters area or those on the streets to pick-up trash for the sake of cleaning it?
Or is it that they would better ransack those garbage bins to look for “tira-tira” so they could fed their families?
But can these people afford it?
No. Education is the last thing in their minds. Food is.
That’s where good governance comes in.
Poverty alleviation should be the main focus of a good government.
We are not asking for dole-outs. We are only asking for good governance.

When all three branches are controlled by a corrupt president, and all aspects of government, are in one catastrophic mess and become convinced that a problem is severe enough to demand immediate attention, the people step up and solve the problem themselves. If you are aware of all the summary of the current dire situations, dealing with the evil empire in our country under Gloria, which threatened our peace and prosperity,re-building traditional family values and returning Filipino dignity to its core principles of freedom, personal liberty and personal responsibility.
Solving problems is what people do,not politicians. Politicians have solved none of these issues and both Congress and Senate have held power, and none of them have solved any of the problems people elected them to solve. Fool me once, shame on you – twice, shame on me, but for many times in a row, that’s got to be some kind of gross ignorance, doesn’t it?
We are also responsible for the political mess we have today. We elect these politicians and then return to our daily routines as if we’ve done our part and the rest is up to the elitist intellectual do-nothings we just elected. What we see today is nothing more than the natural results of absentee management. We’ve been too busy with life to run our own family,so we’ve left it in the hands of politicians who have no solution solving anything, other than their personal financial stability. When it comes to getting things done,no society or other country on earth can hold a candle for Filipinos.Over and over throughout history,Filipino have stepped forward to solve seemingly unsolvable problems, From Jose Rizal, Aguinaldo, Marshal Bonifacio, EDSA I, II and III. It’s the people who get things done when they know that their president is oppressive and insane. What politician is going to fix any of it when it profits politicians both monetarily and in terms of power?
Pidalism Crony Medicine – A good example of making a problem worse, just to benefit politicians Tongressman and governors alone–
More than that, can we expect those using the streets not to litter them with trash?
Even our system of education is flawed. Take the premier state university, the University of the Philippines, for example. It is envisioned to cater to the educational needs of intellectually deserving but financially challenged students.
One has to pass UPCAT to earn the right to admission. Needless to say, one has to be intellectually above average to pass UPCAT.
Sadly, our elementary and secondary public school systems generally do not possess the capacity to prepare graduates for the intellectual challenge of the UPCAT. Private schools, on the other hand, have that capacity- and for one to get private education, he has to come from a family which can afford private education. Pera pa rin.
While I concede that there are UP students from poor families, they are more of an exemption rather than rules.
Whoever replaces Aling Gloria should work out a plan to raise the elementary and secondary public school standards to be at par, if not better, than those in private school systems.
Ang masakit kasi, most of the opportunities are available to those who already have them. The systems we have in our society today tend to marginalize those who are already marginalized. No wonder why, as a rule, the poor gets poorer by the day, while the rich gets richer by the hour.
Just my 2 pesos worth of opinion…
Note: This is a second attempt at posting these thoughts. The first attempt may have ended up as trash in one of those streets. Pakipulot na lang po.
Pareng Cocoy,
Swak na swak! Nakakahiwa sa sakit. So sad, yet so true.

Para yatang Missing In Action sina Ka Magno at Ka Emil…
jonas burgos = 186 days missing
It’s deja vu. Way back in 1980s, student activists and peasants were routinely abducted by armed men for denouncing the conjugal dictatorship.Never to be found again. The “Desparecidos”(the missing ones).
Jonas Burgos remains a “desparecido”.
Are we heading in the same direction as in the dark days of the Marcos dictatorship?
ONE DAY THEY CAME
One day they came and they took the Communists
And I said nothing because I was not a Communist
Then one day they came and they took the student activists
And I said nothing because my son was not a student activist
One day they came and they took Jonas Burgos
And I said nothing because he was not part of my family
One day they bombed Ayala mall
And I said nothing because no one from my family got hurt
Then one day they came and they took me
And I could say nothing because I was as guilty as they were
For not speaking out and saying that all men have a right to freedom!
The system of education i’m referring to is not the one in existence. In fact, it’s a very expensive way of getting yourself manipulated.
Allow me to cite one example:
Every engineering student are told that they can never design any machinery whereby the output exceeds the input. Efficiency will never exceed 100%.
This is not true.
Why would they lie?
If output energy is greater than the input, then part of that output can be used as input to drive the machine by itself, and the extra power available can then be used for other purposes. There will be freedom from the use of oil to generate motive power.
How did they able to do this lying?
Major publishing houses are owned by big business interests. They printed these books that our students have been digging and proud to graduate from not knowing it was meant to limit their capacity to create using their own cognitive intelligence.
Is this education?
You’re right, it’s not.
I think it’s high time now that the students, and the public at large, realize that not everything written on their textbooks are accurate.
What can we learn from these?
There are two ways to make people dumb:
1. Let them go hungry, and forget about education.
2. If they can afford college, require them to read your books filled with half-truths and mispellings.
Why would they want us dumbed?
Dumb people are much easier to control. And dumber are those who pay to get miseducation.
It takes a truly independent, uncompromising leader to defy these manipulations.
At present there’s only one that is uncompromising as he can get. He’s in politics, but doesn’t behave as such.
erratum:
Every engineering student is told that he can never design any machinery whereby the output exceeds the input. Efficiency will never exceed 100%.
Ka Enchong,
Here’s another one that truly accounts this miseducation from the point of view of an engineering student himself.
Manuel Buencamino also believes that Esperon, when push comes to shove, might turn around and stage his own personal “withdrawal of support” but I don’t know who would follow him — he has neither credibility nor acknowledged leadership quality in the Armed Forces of the Philippines to stage a revolt against the hand that feeds him.
But one can never tell. If he does that, i.e., try to topple Gloria to save his skin, Filipinos must beware. They should dump him too.
Sampot,
Re your question: “I think it’s high time now that the students, and the public at large, realize that not everything written on their textbooks are accurate.
“What can we learn from these?”
I think one of the answers would be to use foreign textbooks, i.e., French, German, Italian, etc and have them translated. Otherwise, you have British and American engineering textbooks that are available too.
Sampot’s “Why would they want us dumbed?
“Dumb people are much easier to control. And dumber are those who pay to get miseducation.”
The way the Burma junta rule…
A lot of wonderful things happened during the Enlightenment Era in Europe. One thing good about Men of Science is that they are not that possessive about their work. Honor, rather than financial rewards, are what drives them mostly.
I agree that those accomplishments be translated and made available to the academia.
Oh, how i long for the day when this will come about. ‘Dami talagang dapat gawin. Wala pa tayo sa square one.
AdeBrux, how are things going on from your end?
Hi Sampot,
I think, we should bombard the British Amabassador in Pinas and the DESO man in the British Embassy with letters asking them to desist or to tell them what we think of Gloria.
In any case, I am going to send British Ambassador and DESO point man in Manila letter to that effect.
Ans, I like your idea of bomparding “..the British Amabassador..and the DESO man in the British Embassy with letters asking them to desist or to tell them what we think of Gloria.”
Pareng Enchong;
Hehehehe!
From Sampot:
“Bakit po? Dahil ang gobyerno na ‘to ay gumawa ng:
1. Pinakamahal na 5km highway sa buong mundo;
2. Pagnakaw sa budget para sa pataba ng mga magsasaka;
3. Marines’ Beheading;
4. Forced Disappearances, extra-judicial killings, state-sponsored terrorism;
5. ZTE-NBN Anomalous Deal;
6. Prostitution of ALL supposedly Independent Institutions
7. Transformation of LGUs into a Cabal of Swindlers
8. At marami pang iba.”
Anna. I’m told the rift of GMA and the Pangasinan mafia (FVR/JDV) has spilled over to the military. “Each group is consolidating their forces including military components”, my source said.
I’m curious, which side will esperon take?
Ellen, I’m confident he will side with the PSG.
You mean the pangasinan mafia?
ellen,
my take is contrary to that of AdeBrux; am expecting Esperon to dump the Tiyanak and side with the Pangasinan mafia of JdV and Ramos, being a townmate of the former president, if opportune time presents itself and forced to pick sides.
Esperon’s actuations, past and present, belies the picture of a Palace stooge; he is now as powerful as her commander-in-chief. in more than one sense, in fact, more powerful: Gloria cannot afford now to dump the cunning CSafp, yet the luxury of choice is always available on Esperon’s sleeves.
besides, Ramos was once his patron` who played a not so discreet role in having a hand to where he is now.
Gloria’s security adviser Bert Goonzales on the other hand, got no other choice but to stick with his president; for he is only an errand boy cum alter ego of his political mentor in the Palace.
this mentor, and often his source of voodoo intellectual mumbo-jumbo ramblings remains the Tiyanak’s off-screen trusted adviser.
Am referring, of course, to yet another branch of the Pinoy Mafia family: the Ateneo, led by Fr. Romeo Intengan, s.j.
knives,
Panlilio ba? Alam mo ba yon?
Kundi’y masyadong burol ang pagkakutsilyo mo. Burol ka.
You cannot appreciate what you can’t understand.
There are some people that are just not capable of conducting simple analysis.
Let’s take for example the case of the 5.5km Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard costing P1,100,000,000.00 which is equivalent to P200,000,000 per meter!
erratum:
Let’s take for example the case of the 5.5km Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard costing P1,100,000,000.00 which is equivalent to P200,000,000 per meter!
erratum, again:
Let’s take for example the case of the 5.5km Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard costing P1,100,000,000.00 which is equivalent to P200,000,000 per kilometer or P 200,000.00 per meter!
Take note.
Asphalt is a by-product of oil refining process, hence cheaper than cement.
