Red scarves

red-scarves-flying3.JPG

Tempers flared and red scarves were waved at the court martial hearing yesterday of 28 officers allegedly involved in the failed coup against Gloria Arroyo in February 2006.

The courtroom animosity was precipitated by the insistence of the panel to proceed with the trial even when the Pre-Trial Advice, the basis of the charges against the officers is not signed by AFP Chief of Staff Hermogenes Esperon. The accused raised a howl.

But before that, even before the start of the trial, the atmosphere was highly- charged with all the soldiers guarding the courthouse sporting orange countersign armbands, something usually seen during armed confrontation.

Col. Marian Aleido, the law member in the panel, was so upset by the officers vocal indignation, she demanded, “Who shouted? Be man enough to admit.”

Capt. Frederick Sales stood up and introduced himself. “I was the one who shouted,” he declared.

Aleido reminded the officers that it is not a civilian court and “even if it was so, certain decoruim is expected of you. We are bound by military discipline.”

Aleido demanded that Sales apologize. The officer refused. His lawyer, Atty. Alex Avisado, tried to intervene: “I’d like to apologize in behalf of my client.”

Aleido asked Sales, “Are you willing to apologize?”

Sales approached the bench as he wanted to show Aleido and the rest of the panel the page in the PTA where the signature of Esperon is missing. “Papirmahan na lang kay Esperon para walang problema,” the officer said.

The panel asked the military police to direct Sales back to his seat. As Aleido lectured that Esperon’s non-signing of the PTA is not the issue, other officers, one after another, without waiting to be recognized, blurted their disgust. A defense lawyer asked for a break to cool tempers down. The court granted a five minute-recess which stretched to one hour.

Outside the courtroom, more MPS with their shields arrived and ringed the courthouse.

During the break, the officers peppered the prosecution panel with angry questions. More MPs had to brought in. Col Achilles Segumalian, asked a basic question, “Bakit kasi ayaw pirmahan?”

Col. Edmundo Malabanjot, usually quiet and always smiling, was so upset, he was seen teary- eyed. “Sa PMA, ang pirma hindi lang basta pirma, that involves honor.”

Capt. Ruben Guinolbay said, “mga tropa namin nakakulong. Nasaan si Pangcog?” referring to Maj.Oriel Pangcog, whose relatives successfully lobbied with Esperon to be dropped from the list of officers charged with mutiny and conduct unbecoming of an officer and gentleman.

One officer said, “Kung may bayag si Esperon (if Esperon had balls) he should sign that PTA.”

Other officers didn’t speak but their actions spoke louder than words. If looks could melt persons, Trial Judge Advocate Col. Feliciano Loy would have evaporated with the intense gaze of Capt. Allan Aurino. Col. Orlando de Leon tapped his right shoulders twice, an act seen as a “warrior’s call”

Then, red scarves materialized among the accused. The officers just held the scarves while the lawyers tied them around the arms.

When the hearing resumed the prosecution asked for adjournment. It was immediately granted. But before the hearing was ended, Col Aleido declared Capt. Sales in contempt of court.

Major Leomar Jose Doctolero stood up and said, “Your Honor, I also shouted!.”

The panel pretended they didn’t hear Doctolero.

When they stepped out of the courthouse, the officers waved the red scarves over four layers of human shields .

It was beautiful!

  1. All the 28 officers should have done what Major Doctolero in unison!

  2. Ooops, should have done what Major Doctolero DID but in unison…altogther that is. Would have been an excellent challenge to Esperon’s bogus court.

    Ellen,

Only in the Philippine lang ito na may:
    1) “Please Impeach Me”
    2) “Please Invistigate Me”
    3) “Please Bomb Me”
    4) “Please Declare Emergency Me”
    5) “Please Martial Law Me”

  4. vonjovi2 vonjovi2

To all 28 FEW GOOD MENS na naka kulong ay maraming salamat sa inyo.

MARAMING SALAMAT.. 28 Few Good Mens….

Come Nov. 1 & 2 let us not forget to pray for the deceased members of the military particularly the ones who died in that ambush during the release of Fr. Bossi. Let us show too that we mourn the Death of Justice in our courts and particularly in this Kangaroo court. Are you brave enough to stand up for justice? Kung ikaw ay may familia I hope and pray that you too could feel the pains and sufferings of their families..but you seem to be callous and call it in the name of justice?

I also shouted! Taris ka Gloria and Asspweron!

    Ellen,

I really liked what happened there. I agree with Anna, sana ay sabay- sabay silang nagsigaw ng “I also shouted”!

“Nasaan si Pangcog?” tanong ni Capt. Guinobay.

We can just imagine that even the MPs or soldiers guarding the courthouse were all in one with the accused officers. They were just doing their jobs and obeying orders. But if worse comes to worst, makikiisa sila sa mga inakusahang sundalo at bayan.

  15. pechanco pechanco

By the way, if the officers waved the red scarves, GMA and the Malacanang staff would wave red panties.

    Maiba lng ako konti…

Napadaan ako ng Wikipedia at very interesting ang nabasa ko about ke gloria… copy paste ko:

“Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (born April 5, 1947), also known by her initials “G.M.A.”, is the 14th and current president of the Republic of the Philippines. She is the country’s second female president after Corazon Aquino. She is the daughter of former President Diosdado Macapagal.

Prior to becoming president, Arroyo was the country’s first female vice president. She was launched into the presidency in 2001 by EDSA II that ousted Joseph Ejercito-Estrada from power amid accusations of widespread corruption. Arroyo was elected to a six-year term in a widely contested and greatly tainted 2004 election, defeating the popular and real presidential winner actor Fernando Poe, Jr..”

  17. pechanco pechanco

Chas, hindi mo binasa ang kasunod: “…It then reached a point that people’s outrage was uncontrollable. Millions of people marched to Malacanang Palace and physically dragged Arroyo out. Then, they stoned her, kicked her, spit on her until she lost consciousness. She later died of internal injuries. The country did not mourn her death. The only people who attended her wake and burial were the Arroyo family, Ermita, Bunye, Mel Probador, Esperon, the two Gonzaleses. Among the more important personalities who consoled with the widower, First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, was Vicky Toh who wore dark glasses but smiling.

this is a drama thats been going in my head, movie-like: in a moment of exasperation, an officer heaves a sigh, shakes his head momentarily and stares blankly into the crowd. in a second, he steps away from his captors to gently, softly say, “i’m tired. end this if you want…” as his voice fades he strides to where a shielded phalanx of fellow soldiers stand guard. “if you need to shoot me now,” he says, “now is the time. i have done nothing wrong.” the crowd fidgets. the officer tears up. looks back.

and a throng of his fellow accused take steps with him. unarmed, subdued. they walk away together anyway. away from the confines of a sham court where their dignity and their rights have died. away from the final resting place of the freedom they risked their lives for.

as the court martial echo orders in a cadence of stern and deep voices, the 28 men, honoroble men, finally just walk away. and they who guard them could not shoot for the tears in their eyes. they weep for the choice they are being asked to make. their rifles remain quiet. they let the people go.

i know its too much to ask for these great men to sacrifice more than they already have. though i am sure no one who guard them would deign to shoot at the behest of such a corrupt heirarchy, it is still a fearsome thought. esperon, after all, cannot seem to be counted upon to act on reason.

  19. Sayang that no cameras are allowed in the court room during hearing. Outside, as I have said earlier, we have been shunted 100 meters away. Since I am using a cellphone, I was not able to capture it.

I’m asking fotos from Ces Drilon of ABS-CBN. I’ll post them once i get them.

  20. LVM, the hearing was yesterday morning. the courtroom incident happened past 11 a.m. The red scarves waving happened at 12:30 pm.

  21. Totie Totie

Pechanco: So RED is the new Yellow.

  22. There were just five of us reporters who were there. Camp Capinpin is in Tanay, three hours ride from Manila. It’s being done there purposely to disuade media from covering.

It’s a good thing the three TV stations were there: ABS-CBN, GMA-TV, ABC–5 and NHK-TV.

I think there was another event in the military which the Defense Press Corps had to cover. But they were able to get copies of the statements of the officers. See previous story here by Victor Reyes re the detained officers accepting Esperon’s counter-challenge to tell the truth.

  23. pechanco pechanco

Yes Totie, it’s now Red. But Red is identified with the Left.
    Iyan lang ang problema.

  24. Totie Totie

OO nga eh!, But just like what you said before, at all cost. Basta bantayan lang ang mga Pulang pula.

  25. Since there is no rule of law, anyway, the officers in incarceration are right to show their defiance against the kangaroo court.

Hopefully, their lawyers can find ways and means to make Esperon, and even those trying them for crimes they have not committed, be held legally responsible for depriving them of their human rights as provided for by Philippine and international laws.

Sa amin iyan, for all the violations committed by those trying these gallant men, matagal nang dismiss ang kaso nila.

  26. luzviminda luzviminda

    Ate Ellen,

  27. luzviminda luzviminda

“the atmosphere was highly- charged with all the soldiers guarding the courthouse sporting orange countersign armbands, something usually seen during armed confrontation.”

Ano kaya kung gamitin din ng mga gallant soldiers ang kulay orange na armbands, hindi kaya sila magkalituhan, and in the process ay makatakas. Hehehe!

The longer Punggok is in office, the more her psychology becomes clear. She’s not a well-meaning doofus; she’s a devil. She is becoming blind an ignorant, fragile, and rigid person, she would not be susceptible to this sort of conditioning, but by temperament and practice, she has nothing of her own to counter all the anomalous scandals. Her shyster-sycophants like Puno and Bunye tell lies that as president she can do whatever she wants and even the recent bombing. Another spin lies in the making from Puno’s dirty mouth, that a madman terrorist is behind the bombing.

We Filipinos must stop believing them At some point we have to stop being terrorized. We have to stop living in fear. We have to live in hope, and We have to return to EDSA if there’s no alternative solution. They need to be and demand a moral, democratic country not Pidalism. If we’re fighting for freedom we have to live it. We cannot condone abductions and illegal imprisonment of our brave soldiers. We have to stand up and make the sacrifice it takes to be free. We have to give up our fear.,

Only in the Philippines lang talaga ito.

Para makita ang tunay na kalagayan nila, I would suggest to have the “high and mighty” bishops celebrate the mass. Or is beneath their dignity to do so?

I agree with cocoy. We have to start making a stand. We have to be more active about our creating awareness about our displeasure with Gloria and her hoodlums. I’m not talking about being violent, but, kinda like a silent protest/boycott or what have you. Let’s support the pinoy “warriors” by that we’re with them for the long haul. We just have to be relentless in making noise.

Somehow, you can’t help but commend MIDGET & HER DOGS for doing a job well done… Look at the headlines now, the tri-media, etc… all are focused on the Makati Blast.. Nsaan n ung impeachement, BRIBERY, Garci, and don’t forget the ZTE hearing on the 25th…

I sure hope that the media, as well as the people, will be vigilant and intelligent enough for their attention not to be diverted…. Ibalik ang focus s BRIBERY!

Below is a statement of Ronaldo Puno regarding Sen. Trillanes accusing the Palace to be behind the Glorietta Blast.

“This is demeaning to our political system and the political environment. If they can remain on more statesmanlike level so this tragedy would not be exploited for their gains,” he said.”

    4) “Kawal ng pilipino”–Capt. Faldon

    puwede din
    1) “The band of traitors” — kilala na ninyo ito (i.e San Juan) — action/drama movie
    2) “Bad Generals” or “Hello Generals” — suspense/comedy ito
    3) “Commander-in-thief” — comedy entry ito.

    Rose,

“ang pagwayway ng red scarves tumatawag sa atin lahat na lumaban tayo for justice.”

Korek ka d’yan. Red scarves around the necks of the miners in the mountains of West Virginia started the “Redneck” phenomena in the US. With red scarves on their necks, (pareho na rin yan sa ‘pagwagayway’) they fought for fairness and justice in pay and social conditions until the government gave in to their demands. That’s the start of labor union in ‘merika. This also gave life to NASCAR (to make the long story short).

Iwagayway ang mga red scarves in support of our WARRIORS in Tanay!

    Sampot,
The ”Few Good Men” did/do not advocate a military junta. They just wanted a true pro-democratic system change and stood as agents for that change. Gen Lim explicitly mentioned in the video tape about the formation of a civilian transition govt not military junta.
Reading Gen Lim’s statement all over again makes me more inspired and hopeful that there are still men in uniform who are ready to sacrifice their lives and careers for the good of the majority. Sen Trillanes et al included.

Pls check Gen Lim’s statement posted at http://www.sundalo.bravehost.com

  48. The ”Few Good Men” did/do not advocate a military junta.

    i know.

I’m just jumping the gun, for i don’t subscribe to Sen.

We need a total systemic change more than just a leadership change.

  49. One notable defect on the current set-up is the President’s authority to appoint heads of constitutionally mandated institutions – COMELEC, NEDA, COA, AFP, etc.

How can we expect these institutions to act independently when the Chairmen are beholden without question to the appointing authority?

And whether Justice Puno is an exception, remains to be seen.

  50. When Good Men Do Nothing

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” (Edmund Burke)

  51. Sampot:

Japan and the Philippines had the same beginnings with the US supervising the rebuilding and building of the two nations, but it’s amazing that between the two nations Japan has fared well with the pacifist Constitution still intact and the basic laws we call “Roppo” or six sets of important laws going through a revision to change the language used according to the needs of the time, but the context of the law remaining the same.

In the Philippines, they have changed laws not just twice but a number of times, but still we see the country retrogressing instead of progressing.

Worst is they have allowed a criminal to appoint people in agencies responsible for making sure one like her will not be able to grab power and appoint herself as acting president/president with the help of the crooks she has made deals to make them rich and powerful!!!

Ang tanong, sino ang may kasalanan? US?

Kawawang Pilipinas! Nasadlak na talaga sa dusa!!!

  52. Sampot: I’m just jumping the gun, for i don’t subscribe to Sen.

I second the motion! Why burden the Philippines with another misfit? I can’t understand this mentality as a matter of fact.

Filipinos should be presented with better choices. Hindi na puede iyong choice between two evils na lang!!!

  53. Filipinos should be presented with better choices.

    Correct.

And we must make those options available to and by ourselves and not just hang our fate with a Noli, Pangilinan or a Honasan.

And why do we always have to limit our options to that which have been tried before. Can’t we be more creative?

    Now, that’s the problem…

  81. Ellen,

Have been stand-bying in Quezon’s blog. One of the bloggers is a former military officer from PMA and he has excellent inputs on the blast. (Technical and theoretical).

Here’s one of his (Ramrod) reply to a post):

“Rosero added that the post-blast investigation might take more days as the blast site is knee-deep flooded with water from the sprinklers and as its ceiling is on the verge of collapsing.” – By Thea Alberto

    ramrod :
    qwert,

If thats the case, I’m afraid they will never find anything. The water will wash out traces of the explosive, very convenient, it washed itself. I heard earlier that they found traces of RDX (C4 related). What a shame, if they confirmed C4, not many people has access to it, only the military and mining companies (legally), then it will appear we were attacked by angry miners. The MILF, RSM, have nothing to gain by bombing this area, they can get national attention just by ambushing our soldiers in their territory where they have they have terrain advantage.

Ellen, was wondering since you have access to the Army Rangers and to the SWAGs (particularly the SWAGs because I’m aware first hand that SWAGs are used to C4 and other forms of bombing paraphernalia), maybe you could interview one of them to find first hand their thoughts on this blast. Another person to talk to is Ed Santos (in his capacity as former N2 and efficient at his job, he has certainly many things to say).

  82. Ellen,

  83. Ellen,

Imagine this gunggong na Esperon – does he believe his being CSAFP is sinonymous to leadersip when the pictures speak for themselves – he is pitting the military against the military?

    Anong klaseng kagunggungan iyan?

Ahhh, what a convenient scape…water!

In a red alert panic mode na nga si Esperon: hindi lang one to one guard as in basketball kundi three to one guard..and to think that the detained officers were in the territory of the adm…were they afraid of an escape? sana nag walk out sila waving the red scarves..babarilin kaya sila?

  87. Rose,

Talagang takot si Esperon… no question about it. He knows full well that Lim, Querubin and Miranda (even if in principle, the latter is already retired) can rally dissatisfied troops still. One command by Querubin to a company of Marines and Esperon might find himself deeply mired in shit of his own creation.

We really must give credit to the 28 officers for being calm.

  88. chi chi

“Esperon… pitting the military against the military?”

Oo nga, Anna. Kitang-kita sa photos. I pray that those guarding the 28 officers have their own reasonable minds!

I never resorted to labeling upon my fellow guests here, except in one accident – the case with Pedro. He barged in sarcastically right after a certain “araneta?” whom we had a fiery exchange earlier. It was his first time here at Ellenville, and I had no idea about his style of discourse. Paid hacks roam here from time to time, and i really thought Pedro was one of them or he was “araneta” himself.

When i skimmed into MLQ3’s blog a few days later, there he was, narrating his sad experience with me.

That was a sad case. And i have to bear with that.

    Again, welcome Petite to Ellenvile.

  103. klingon klingon

Chabeli, the Articles of War are the penal laws applicable solely to military personnel. It is under the AOW that the Tanay 28 are being prosecuted.

  104. klingon klingon

I wonder if it is really C4. Although this is a plasticine explosive and not easily detectable, it is also very expensive. I wonder if even the AFP has some.

  105. klingon klingon

However it is not true that the water will wash out the explosive traces, if it really is C4 (91% RDX), it dissolves very slowly in water, so it will be traceable. Even TNT will leave traces despite the presence of water.

    Petite:
    AL SALAMO ALAIKUM.

I agree with you completely. The Muslim image in the whole world are a bunch of terrorist after the incident of 9/11,Perhaps if more Muslims spoke out against violence, perceptions would change. What is actually giving good Muslims a bad name are bad Muslims.

Now, take a look at some of the key issues that lie at the core of the questions of religion such as the CBCP,Vellarde and Bacani. We have suffered the abuse from these religious character. Anyone who can read is able to find excerpts in translation from the Bible that would curdle the blood of any innocent reader who doesn’t know the context of the citations. King David arranged the murder of an innocent man because he lusted over the poor man’s wife.

The queries have come steadily in my innocent mind about the teaching of Mohhamed “Does Islam teach that a martyr who enters heaven gets the pleasure of 70 virgins?”Does Islam condone suicide?”Does Jihad justify the cause? Those scholar of Theology and Muslim scholars alike, often confuse the situation even more, because virtually any priest, pastor and rabbi can claim to be a scholar and speak on behalf of Jesus and Mohammed, many of them seem not to know what they are talking about. Believe in Christ for the salvation of your soul, Do the Jihad and enter Allah’s kingdom, Join the El Shaddai, the more you give the more blessings from heaven and it need an upside down open umbrella. The door to heaven belong to Iglesia ni Kristo. Was this Muslim and Christian religion intended to be believed literally?

I heard that one of the accused got so impatient and upset because someone from the panel was sneering at them… the accused chased the member of the panel out of the court…. Can you tell us more about this please Ellen???

  110. Socorro, it’s not true. But there was an incident last year when the accused didn’t like Col Ukol Paglala laughing (sneering is too strong a term) at an issue they raised.

I forgot what issue was it but the discussion was heated. The court had to break to cool down tempers.

Capt. Sales approached Col. Paglala and told him, “Nakakaloko ka, a.Bakit ka patawa-tawa.”

MPs were called. Cooler heads prevailed.

  113. Chabeli Chabeli

Ms Ellen, I hope that Col Querubin will be fine & that he gets well soon.

  114. Hopefully, lalabanan ni Col. Querubin iyong stress ng pagkulong sa kaniya, and hope and pray that he can survive his present ordeals. Huwag silang patatalo. They can learn from the example of Au San Suu Kyi bagamat mas malala ang situation nila.

Come to think of it, hindi ba ingay lang ng trumpeta (on instruction from heaven) na nabuwag ang Wall of Jericho? Frankly, it is why I am here—para mag-ingay at matumba ang pader ng kahayupan ni GLORC!

    Tuloy ang batikos!!!

From what I hear, Secretary Teodoro is a no non-sense kind of guy. I think that his recent speech to the PMAers is a peep into what he is all about: “And I know because of your love for country and your dedication to your duty to your country, you will take the first step in unifying each and every one…”

As I mentioned in an earlier thread, we cannot expect anybody in Gloria’s cabinet to go against her. As an example, look what happened to Neri. There are a FEW good men lang talaga. After reading the Inquirer article on Secretary Teodoro, I can only hope that he will among the few.
