Former Marines commandant Maj. Gen. Romeo Miranda is “seriously ill” and has to be confined at the AFP Medical Center in Quezon City for about a week, Sen. Rodolfo Biazon said today.
Miranda, who is among 28 Army and Marines officers detained in Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal for alleged involvement in last year’s failed power grab attempt, was brought to the hospital Thursday morning for a checkup, said Biazon, chairman of the committee and national defense who is set to visit the officers in the camp on Monday.
“Instead of only three days of executive examination, the authorities in V. Luna told me (yesterday morning) that it may require more than three days… meaning baka meron ngang indication na kailangan tingnang mabuti,” Biazon told reporters.
Biazon, a former Marines and AFP chief, said physicians told him Miranda was suffering from diabetes and vertigo.
AFP chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon has downplayed Miranda’s condition which was brought to the military leadership’s attention during a court martial proceeding in the camp Friday last week.
After saying Miranda was not entitled to an “executive checkup” because he is a “destabilizer,” Esperon allowed him to undergo what a military spokesman said was “annual physical examination” which he said is “basically the same” as the executive checkup.
The commander of the detention facility in Camp Capinpin earlier rejected Miranda’s request to seek medical attention at a hospital inside the camp on the ground he is a “security risk.”
Biazon said he received information that another detained officer has cancer. He refused to identify the officer.
Lt. Col. Edwin Torrelavega, head of the Camp Capinpin Hospital, said Wednesday that detained Lt. Col. Armando Bañez has “a history” of cancer of the colon and was referred recently to the Manila Naval Hospital for checkup. Bañez underwent operation in 2001, the military said.
Marine Col. Ariel Querubin last week said he has not been brought to the hospital for a blood test that had been scheduled at least two weeks ago. His wife yesterday said physicians visited the camp and got blood samples from Querubin and several other detained officers.
During the hearing yesterday his blood pressure shot up. He was attended to immediately by a doctor.
There are nine Marines and 19 Army officers in detention in Camp Capinpin.
Biazon warned the military leadership to better attend to the detained officers’ medical concerns “because if something happens to them it will surely result in instability.”
“I would like to check if it is true that medical examination, care, attention is being denied to these officers… if something happens to them… this definitely would be a prescription for instability in the AFP,” he said.
On Monday, Biazon will bring with him a medical team to Camp Capinpin for an independent assessment of the officers’ medical condition.
Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro has acceded to Biazon’s request to be allowed to visit and examine the detained officers, on condition of no media coverage.
Itong si Biazon dapat straight talk na kaagad instead of
““because if something happens to them it will surely result in instability.”
He should have said: “If anything happens to them, I will hold you responsible!”
He has all the right to say, I will hold you responsible precisely because HE IS A SENATOR OF THE REALM!
At his age and in this lifetime, Biazon could at least get in there FIGHTING with his Senator’s badge! He’s got nothing to lose anymore at this stage of his life!!!!!
Sen. Jamby Madrigal was there this morning. She attended the hearing. Will post photos in a while.
Go Senator, go! You should have done this long ago and shouldn’t have waited for Ellen’s batterings of Esperon to do this… Putragis, Marines pa naman siya!
Semper Fi!
For that I admire her!!!!
Chi, Yuko, Pechanco, everyone,
I used not to like Jampy but I do believe we must support Jamby now! Whatever they’re saying about her, she at least has the guts and the willpower to get in there fighting this corrupt administration!
Anna,
I’ve been supporting Jamby since the day she supported Trillanes. No problem with me.
Ellen,
Now that Gen. Miranda is found with serious illnesses, what’s Asspweron’s alibi for not allowing him a general check up right away. Gosh, can’t believe these demons appearing in human forms!
Chi, a commenter in quezon’s blog said this of the scroll presented to Arroyo in India:
“Lifetime Achievement Award” for unparalled excellence in the following categories :
1] politics without principle
2] wealth without work
3] commerce without morality
4] pleasure without conscience
5] education without character
6] science without humanity
7] worship without sacrifice
Hahahahahahah!
Lim. Sir, thank you po!
Tapos may pumasok na commenter afterwards, “can we discuss more sensible matters in here rather than indulge in personal attacks?”
Hahahahaha!
Hahahahh. Talaga naman ang mga bloggers, right on!
Gloria is without any wisdom in her body!
Oh, para nga pala bigyan ng “Lifetime Achievement Award” for unparalled excellence in the Seven Social Sins.
Nice move Indians!
Chi,
that’s a classic photo-op !
Gloria Macapal Arrovo being handed the Seven Social Sins scroll.
Ano ba Gloria and Asspweron?!
Mga well-meaning Senators…please, magkaisa naman kayo and ask this power-bitching fake president and Ass to release those officers in detention.
Blink-blink all the way ang bruha!
Why not sue Esperon and other officials responsible for Miranda’s much delayed physical exam? The delay worsened his health condition.
Pechanco and others, if you notice I have been deleteng the cuss words not only in your comments but also in others’. Rare times when stress is overwhelming I would tolerate but ordinarily, I’m not comfortable with cuss words.
Thank you for your understanding.
MGA BERDUGO!!!They don’t deserve to be in the military! With them on the helm of the soldiery, the Philippines is in DANGER!!!
Sorry Ellen. Tangna is actually short for “tatang” and “nanay”. I can defend myself in court if they sue me or this blog. Thanks anyway. I can say you’ve been very tolerant.
Pechanco,
suggestion: in place, sulat mo na lang “TANAY” na lang, hehehe! we will understand!
I won’t say Tanay. Baka akala ni Erap minumura ko siya.
Hheheh!
Ayan walang misunderstanding!
Good idea. Kaya nga paborito kitang student. Mga tanay nilang lahat! People don’t only benefit from the intelligent comments in this ET blog, they learn a lot of new words and vocabulary. All for free courtesy of Ellen.
I guess Senator Biazon is just being careful with his choice of words lalo
na pag nagbibigay ng statement. I think he’s just being diplomatic to everyone and given his position as a senator, he’s just being a true statesman. We should not look at the senators as persons who could say anything or do anything they want just because of their positions in the government. I personally believe nis good heart is with our beloved heroes in detention and he won’t allow any bad things to happen considering na most of the detained officers are marines in which he once headed this elite force. Let’s just continously support his advocacies and the steps he’s doing to help the officers.
But, the main issue here is Esperon’s actions towards the officers. Once Sen. Biazon proved that General Miranda and others are seriously ill and repeatedly denied the right to seek medical attention, this only affirms Esperon’s incompetency and dumb-ass thinking and of course, he could be liable for violation of numerous human rights violations and articles of war. What kind of military leadership this illigitimate government have? What kind of ‘father’ Esperon is? Leaving his ‘children’ in the dark and even feeding them to the lions or we could also say, murdering his own children just for personal gain? Esperon’s inhumane acts in this world will not be tolerated by the One above. He will be judged on what he have done to his brothers and what he have done to change this world a better place to live.
Got your message Anna. I’ve posted my support of Jamby in the other loop. I actually have watched her since she joined the group endorsing the ICJ to take up the extrajudicial killings that other senators would not bother get involved in kasi siguro baka masabit din sila! 😛
Sorry, guys, I needed to have some rest myself. Kaya late response ako.
I don’t like people who cannot insist on their rights and privileges.
Me, too. For many years, I have stopped saying those expletives in Filipino, English and Japanese. At home, we don’t use profanity aside from being counseled in church to avoid using profanities. But since 2001, I just cannot help using the p*****inamo in reference to the criminal calling herself “President of the Philippines,” the worst in fact of the presidents conceived to be robbers and thieves!!!
Now, I know why Senator Pimentel was not so keen to be a president of the Philippines. He did not want to be categorized among the robbers and thieves!!!
Let’s support Jamby Madrigal not because she’s good but because she’s with the opposition. Her character is something she cannot be proud of. She treats her pet dogs better than her helpers in the house. Her dogs sleep with her in air-conditioned room and eat the best of foods. The maids and helpers don’t even get to eat what the dogs eat. I’m not here to attack Jamby’s person. And by the way, she loves publicity. Unlike other politicians, Jamby is the one chasing the media people for coverage.
Pechanco: And by the way, she loves publicity. Unlike other politicians, Jamby is the one chasing the media people for coverage.
******
Who does not want publicity? When you get into politics, you must be one who would want that. They become public property so why shouldn’t she try to make the most of it? I’ll give her the opportunity to prove her worth. So far, so good! I haven’t met her, but I’d be most pleased to meet her in person. Some friends in Philippine politics have told me I should! 😛
Ystakei, I happen to know her more than you do.
During the campaign period, kahit isang boteng soft drink hinihingan niya ng resibo from her staff. As I said, I support her if only for her being a die-hard opposition and anti-GMA. Anyway, let’s skip this one about Jamby.
I’m done.
Just got a note on the Cory slur/slut. Whatever, you think the Americans will stop now from insulting Filipinos just because the Malacanang instigated protest to deviate the attention of the Filipinos from the more important issues succeeded in angering a good number of Filipinos in the USA? I doubt!
Ystakei:
Correct ka dyan, this is what American comedians love. pag pikon ka lalo kang todas.
Damn it, it’s Jon Stewart’s fault, Gloria was pissed that Tita Cory was erroneuosly labeled a “Slut”.
In protest, she said, Cory was not and I can attest to that for that title is mine and mine alone.
So you unbelievers, now you know that Mrs. Pidal is also capable of telling the truth. Diba ang saya saya….
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
buwisit kaaaaaaaa!
ngayon, esPWEron, the (quack) doctor specialist playing god, if you are not satisfied with the findings of the doctors in VLMC, you can sue the AFP surgeon general in contradicting your own diagnosis on gen miranda.
General Esperon this is already falling under humanitarian consideration. Mistah mo pa naman, take away the politics and other considerations, just look at the humanity open your heart and stop acting like a God for you are not and will never be. Put your shoes in his shoes. How does it feel?
Support, Jamby – Okay, but in a short leash. If she loves her dog more than her staff and maids, parang may disconnect. Case to case, day to day basis siya, See what she did to Alan, that was embarassing.
I can’t believe there’s not been any reaction from the rank and file – what are these soldiers waiting for before they speak out, another death to add to the Marine Massacre before they give an angry reaction, it’s too late then. Assperon is taking them for a ride.
I’ll watch the Jon Stewart gimmick tonight where he made fun of women presidents and PM. Chauvinist ang loko, but I love this guy.
Poor Cory Aquino! Bakit ba siya ang natapalan ng slut? Was it because it was during her reign that Filipino women gained such unpatalatable image that a Filipino in the US I know loves to quote—-mga alila at puta ng mundo!
In fact, over in Japan, we were disappointed when she signed an agreement with Japan to grant a special quota of 40,000 entertainers to be deployed to Japan annually despite strong protest against such deployment,
My Japanese friends in the movement against exploitation of such women, etc. were just disgusted that Cory did not stop such deployment that contributed to the bad image of Filipinos overseas. Kung hindi pa nag-higpit ang Japan, hindi hihinto ang mga bugaw, who still try to smuggle these pseudo-entertainers to Japan even now. Talaga naman!
Pechanco n’ Totie,
What is of utmost important is the health and condition of the ‘men of honor’. Without them, mababawasan kundi man tuluyan tayong mawalan ng inspirasyon sa laban kay impakta.
Lahat ng sumusuporta at susuporta ng open (at least alam natin), opposition and admin senators (never mind the lower house of hell) basta sa ikagagaling ni Gen. Miranda and others are welcome.
So far, si Jamby, Ping, Pong, Noted and Sonny, of course, pa lang ang nasa aking listahan.
WWNL,
Yup, the rank and file support I’m awaiting….
Re: “mga alila at puta ng mundo!”
Not sure if this is really the reputation of Filipinos have around the world. But I’m quite certain that Europeans I know and have met tend to think of ordinary Filipinas more in terms of domestic help or baby carers (can’t call them nannies because by tradition a nanny requires more qualification than just looking after children, i.e., some educating).
Most if not all of the people I know here have Filipina maids. When I meet people at parties, as soon as they learn that I’m from the Philippines, they are happy to tell me that they have a Filipino maid.
I think Gloria bears a lot of the responsibility for the worldwide tag of Filipinas as being the perennial maid. This happened because of her govt policy of “exporting Filipino” labour that she liked to talk about even during her foreign roadshows. Also, her supermaid program (although shortlived) stigmatized Filipinas abroad.
But I believe in 20 years, that tag or label will be gone if I’m to follow the Spanish and the Portuguese social labour pattern.
Saw this phenomenon below with my own two eyes:
When I first arrived in Europe, or at first in France, it was the in thing to have a Spanish maid – sitcoms used to include making fun of Spanish maids and their accent. At the time, Spain was considered a very poor country. Janitorial jobs and domestic chores were assigned to Spanish immigrants and lasted well into the early 80s.
Little by little, these Spanish immigrants integrated, their children went to local schools and became part of society. The children of the Spanish maids and janitors grew up and eventually found jobs that were different from those of their parents and eventually either settled down in France and joined the growing lower middle class or went back to Spain to join their parents who retired there.
(At schools during the early 80s, one almost could categorize the profession of children with Spanish names but thankfully, in France the ‘caste system’ did not apply although must say when my son came to the house with a friend bearing a Spanish family name, I automatically would think the the parents’s profession might be that of either maid or janitor. This is of course liberally caricaturing the mindset of people at the time.)
By the early 80s, it’s safe to say that the Spanish maids and janitors started to have things better so that they were promptly replaced by the Portuguese for the same employment position.
Today, the label for being Spanish in France is being a maid or doing the menial job is gone.
In other words, I’m confident this will be true for the current Filippino maid phenomenon.
“In other words, I’m confident this will be true for the current Filippino maid phenomenon.”
anna,

Anna,
Pinas gov’t after Gloria should conduct a survey regardings this so we can find out the truth and can do something.
Tell you. Even in the mountains of rednecks, some if not all already knew about Pinas prostis. I just laughed it off
when two rednecks, when they found out that hubby and I are from the Philippines, sabi ba naman, ” Ma’am, Philippines is the home of those ‘sexy’ ladies, right?” Mildly put lang but the same. Buti na lang at trabahador ko sila.
Know why? Because even the Redneck show of Larry the Cable makes fun of our women, nakuha siguro sa movies ni Schnieder kung saan.
Iyan ang epekto ni Gloria Impakta!
Off to the mountains, will be back.
“He has all the right to say, I will hold you responsible precisely because HE IS A SENATOR OF THE REALM!”
tumpak, anna.
he still has more to gain in standing with the men of honor and nothing to lose if he gets on a head-on collision with esPWEron!
Magno,
I do hope Sen Biazon will be more active in the case of the incarcerated officers because he knows these officers did not use violence – he must know that Lim spoke to Senga in confidence as any good thinking officer would.
I do realize that Lim’s video statement in Feb last year may be presented as a kind of evidence but instead of putting them down, their grievances should be investigated.
Senator Biazon is not running for re-election and would be retiring. Matanda na siya. He’s grooming for his son to succeed him. The younger Biazon might run for the Senate in 2010.
If you ask me, I don’t trust Biazon 100%.
Definitely No! hindi nagpapapogi si Sen Biazon, he was extending help to his comrades which was really very much true, the situation of the jailed magdalo; group most of them suffer sickness and denied by our government especially the Military officer who were under esperon .
if anything really happen to all sick officer detained, they will suffer the consequence. we all the family of the retired military men, especially the wives will go out in the street and give our parting words to the fake president and esperon and fight up the last drop of our blood.
Tell me, is Biazon handsome or not? Kung pangit siya, di nagpapapogi. Kailangan ba magpapogi ang isang pogi na? Eh kaso hindi pogi si Biazon. And please be consistent in your letter size. Ellen has repeatedly reminded the bloggers (including you) not to capitalize. Hindi naman bulag ang mga bloggers dito. Be courteous naman…
Chi: Ma’am, Philippines is the home of those ’sexy’ ladies, right?”

Buti ikaw ganyan lang ang tanong. How would you feel as a decent and educated woman if some dirty old man asks you which bar you work in and how much would he needs to pay you for an hour tryst in some hotel kasi pilipina ka? Ganyan ang nangyari sa pinsan kong walang kamuwang-muwang sa mundo when she was here as a student.
No thanks to the bugaws who still come here to beg Japan to open the door again to the Japayukis!
gen HERmogenes Asspweron, when you retire you are invited and welcome to join the “Gay Parade” dito sa San Francisco, California. at pwede kang parade marshall. i am sure enjoy ka dito kasi marami kang katuuuuuuuuuuuuladlad dito.
Yuko,
Sorry to hear that but here’s my take: If that’s a generality in Japan, medyo may problema ang mga Japanese thinking like that. Cultivated or cultured individuals of any race cannot generalize another by thinking that women of that race are either whores or domestic helpers. Doesn’t make sense…
People who think like that have an enormous problem, lack of education and must of the lowest level so I don’t believe it is the women of the Philippines who have a general problem but those Japanese men – they need re-educating, re-hauling or otherwise, just totally forgotten.
If I were you, Yuko, I wouldn’t give it a second thought. Men like that don’t deserve any mention. They should be treated like animals.
Re Chi’s “Philippines is the home of those ’sexy’ ladies, right?”
If I’d been asked that, I would’ve said simply “Absolutely!” Basta! Of course, the question might not have been anodyne but heck, nobody died … not the end of the world.
Click here for this amusing Uniffors post on why Esperon refused Gen. Miranda medical check up: http://www.uniffors.com/?p=1094
It’s easier said than done, Anna, to ignore the insinuations, inuendoes, etc. Can’t blame the Japanese as a matter of fact. Other foreigners have the same impression, too, of Filipinos in Japan, either katulong or puta, depending on who they are more familiar with since that is what this government shamelessly flaunts as the image of Filipinos here, nothing different likewise with the impression of my foster mom in UK who knew Filipina is defined as “a domestic helper.” It is not something I can ignore but cannot help getting sensitive to even when I have never been directly insulted the way my cousin has been slighted for being a Filipino.
Just saw the picture of GLORC accepting the seven social sins scroll. Nakangiti pa ang ungas. Did she not feel guilty about those sins?
ellen,
gen.miranda is sending his thanks to you and to all who participated in this blog, i gave him a copy and he is very thankful to you all.
as of this time he is still taking some laboratory exams and being treated accordingly.he will still stay for a few more days at V.Luna.
Gen. Miranda is still asking for your help, marami pa daw sa kanila ang nangangailangan ng medical attention, at kailangan pa natin kalampagin ang administrasyon para sila bigyang pansin. sana ay mabigyan din ng annual physical exam ang mga detained officers and soldiers.
You are welcome, Equalizer. I hope the visit of Sen. Biazon tomorrow will result in better attention to the medical needs of these battle-scarred officers.
I know that the treatment of Col. Orlando de leon, Col. Armando Bañez, Col. Achilles Segumalian and Lt. Belinda Ferrer at the Fort Bonifacio Naval Hospital were abruptly stopped last Sept. 9 when midnight they were told to return Tanay. That was three days before the sandiganbyan promulgation of the Erap verdict and the AFP and Police at were highly paranoid.
On the way to Tanay, the Delica van that they were in overheated and smoke started to envelope the vehicle. The officers had to huriedly get out of the van, Col. de leon injured his hand. Someone had to be brought to the hospital in Camp Capinpin for treatment of bruises.
Up to now, the treatment of those officers has not been resumed. Esperon’s wife is a doctor but it seems he has no appreciation of the importance of a thorough medical treatment.
they don’t mind whatever happens to those patriotic soldiers.
kung wala pa magsasalita sa mga press people, hindi sila kikilos.kung di sila mabubuking they will not even lift a finger.
sor far, maganda ang feedback ni mrs. miranda, they are attending to his husband’s medical needs, at ok naman daw po ang mga nurses and doctor’s, but security is very tight, may camera na may mga sundalo pa nakabantay sa pinto, but she understand’s those soldier’s, kaso natatawa nalang daw sya sa sobra ka praningan ng nag utos sa mga sundalo.
sana lang daw ganun din ang gawin pa sa mga sundalo sa tanay, she doesn’t want to give her husband a special treatment, bka pagdating daw sa bandang huli utang na loob pa nila yun. those soldier’s are dying, not in the battle field but inside their detention, she think’s those soldier’s prefer to die in the battle field’s of basilan and sulu, rather die inside camp capinpin due to lack of medical attention.
i think Gen. Miranda will request Senator biazon to help those poor soldier’s condition, they are his first priority. baka hindi pa natatapos ang kangaroo court eh ubos na sila dahil mga nangamatay dahil sa sakit.
i’m sure Sen.Biazon will take action to this matter, he knows what those soldier’s are going thru.
“i think Gen. Miranda will request Senator biazon to help those poor soldier’s condition, they are his first priority.”

The mark of a true leader. My men first, before me.
Atty, I’m just curious what the numbers 36252 stand for? Are those your prison or jail numbers? Kidding aside, yes a true commander should think about his men first. Ilan ang ganitong Generals ang sa atin. While the mid-level officers and enlisted men are fighting the battle out there in the field, GMA’s Generals are inside their air-conditioned rooms giving orders and monitoring by remote control…guarded by a battalion of soldiers. Kapag manalo, they claim credit for the victory. That’s the kind of Generals this evil GMA government has today. Puro ang banat natin kay Esperon but we forget the others like Palparan. We should remind the people who these
bad Generals are.
Student number yan. There is the year of entry, followed by a hyphen, then five digits. Suffice it to say na gurang na tayo.
Student number? Thanks for telling us. Please tell us a bit more about yourself. Medyo naging idol ka na namin dito.
Atty,
Absolutely: “The mark of a true leader. My men first, before me.”
While Esperon, so called CSAFP, continues to violate all the rules of leadership – absolutely despicable!
Noon kami walang number. Just our names suffice. Did I carry an ID? Can’t remember but I guess I did even just for use at the library? Ah, gone are those years when we were safer! At least, one could travel then in style, and have a choice of a good steak!!! Taragis itong mga mad men and women calling themselves leaders of this and that country.
Malapit na siguro ang katapusan ng mundo!

For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. ” (2Timothy 3:1-7)
mgen miranda, sir, among the bunch of officers in your batch in the academy, you are standing out among the rest for keeping the highest tradition and trait a leader must possess – thinking first of your men’s welfare before your own, and we salute you for that. your position was already clear during the stand off in the marine hqs when you owned responsibility over your men’s action in preventing those who tried to arrest you to carry out orders from the then CSAFP gen senga or whoever issued same.
we assure you, sir, that our support will not be dimmed by any intimidation and we’ll be standing by your side till the end of this fight, win or lose!
more power, get well soon!
