Malacañang to ‘Desperate Housewives’: Apologize for slur

From Abs-CBN online:

The furor over a slur uttered against Philippine medical schools on the premier episode of the fourth season of the American TV show “Desperate Housewives” has prompted a response from Malacañang Palace.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the TV show belittled the abilities of Filipino doctors and sent a message that Philippine medical schools produced “substandard, inferior” medical practitioners.

The offending remark was made by one of the show’s desperate housewives, Susan Mayer (played by American actress Teri Hatcher). In one scene Mayer asks for the credentials of the gynecologist who examined her and told her that she was approaching menopause.

Mayer said, “Can I check those diplomas ‘coz I just want to make sure that they’re not from some med school in the Philippines.” The premiere episode, which has been posted on YouTube.com, drew criticisms from the Filipino community on the Internet.

Senator Rodolfo Biazon meanwhile has proposed a ban on the popular TV series. Biazon, who chairs the Senate Committee on National Defense and Security, said he doesn’t watch the show himself but pointed out that a ban on the show or a boycott by Filipino viewers are possible responses.

Earlier, Philippine Health Secretary Francisco Duque said the slur will tarnish the good image of Filipino doctors in the international community. He added that the slur was both irresponsible and without basis.

The Philippine Consulate in New York has said it will send a letter of protest to ABC Network and ask for an apology for the slur. The move came after the consulate office received complaints from the Filipino community, particularly health workers, in the US about the show.

Angry doctors

“It’s not good for us. They shouldn’t have said those [insulting] words, because we all know that there are good doctors who graduated in the Philippines. That’s uncalled for,” PMA president Dr. Jose Sabili told ABS-CBN’s morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda” on Monday.

Earlier, the president of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) said he will urge his counterpart in the US to demand an apology from the people behind the TV series.

Sabili, who was attending the World Medical Associations General Assembly in Copenhagen, Denmark, said he will seek an audience with the president of the American Medical Association to compel the TV producers to issue an apology for the insulting remark.

The doctor said the slur might even create a rift in the relationship of the two medical associations.

“I will meet with the president of the American Medical Association to air our feelings and ask them to tell [the producers of the TV show] that they should not insult doctors in the country,” Sabili said.

Sabili said the PMA will study the possible cause of negative perceptions of medical schools in the Philippines. He said “diploma mills” and negative writeups of medical schools in local newspapers could have contributed to the negative perception.

“I have to verify this. We will definitely act on this because this will destroy the reputation of Filipino doctors,” he said.

Online petition

Filipino Americans have expressed their outrage over the remark and have launched an online petition demanding an apology from ABC Network.

The petition also demands that the episode be edited to remove the “ignorant and racist” remark. As of 4:16 pm (Manila time) some 15,533 people have signed the petition.

The petition also points out the major contribution that Filipinos and Filipino Americans make in healthcare in the United States:

“[A] statement that devalues Filipinos in healthcare is extremely unfounded, considering the overwhelming presence of Filipinos and Filipino Americans in the medical field. Filipinos are the second largest immigrant population in the United States, with many entering the U.S. (and successfully passing their U.S. licensing boards!) as doctors, nurses, and medical technicians.

“In fact, the Philippines produces more U.S. nurses than any other country in the world. So, to belittle the education, experience, or value of Filipino Americans in health care is extremely disrespectful and plain and simply ignorant. Many of the hospitals in major metropolitan areas of the U.S. (and the world) would not be able to operate without its Filipino and Filipino American staff members.”

Jay Ngo, a Filipino health professional from Riverside, California in the United States ABS-CBN News that the episode was an outrage, saying, “the healthcare industry, including the best hospitals, is full of Filipino medical professionals.”

Forum reactions

The message board of the “Desperate Housewives” website is being peppered with threads regarding the issue.

One poster, using the alias “hunnybee07” wrote:

“America has been very fortunate to have been served by many [Filipino] nurses and physicians. It is quite ungrateful of Americans to make such remarks. Even if it were meant to be a joke, it apparently hurt an entire nation. The Filipinos deserve an apology. One day, when you are old, it could just be a Flipino nurse by your bedside and then you would know why you should have taken back any insults against Filipinos, especially Filipino medical practicioners.”

Another poster, “MommyDO12”, who claims to be a doctor in the US said:

“As a Filipino-American who is both a doctor and trained here, I get that your comment is quite ignorant. True, many Americans go overseas for medical school because they could not get in to schools here. However, there are a GREAT number of Americans and Europeans who go to so called “third world” countries because the education there is cutting edge AND affordable. I’m up to my eyeballs in student loans.

“Why do you think Americans are now rushing to the Philippines and India for surgeries unavailabe here in America? There are hip surgery techniques that have been developed there that result in less recovery time and have less mortality.

“Please, get educated before jumping onto the obvious bandwagon of “get over it” because you can’t possibly understand being berated. Even my husband, who is caucasian, took great offense to the comment and is the one urging me to stop watching the show in protest.”

One poster, who used the alias “berikyut”, was long on passion but fell short on English skills.

“What the hell…Talking but about the philippines in your premier… “Let me see your degree making sure is now from somewhere in the philippines”? For you information if you go to hospitals most nurses/doctors there is from philippines & is hard worker & very good…So I suggest you think about your comment before you say it or if it’s a joke It should be funny ( that is why it’s a joke) DUH!!! I usually like you in the show specially watching you in superman before…NOW forget it….that’s why you never win an emmy!!”

This prompted a reply from “Dr.Java02” asking, “Do the nurses/doctors learn grammar and spelling over there?”

With that development, do Filipinos now need to prove that they can master English grammar as well as Western medicine?

  1. Ayan na! Filipinos will be galvanized by the powers that be at home against another target, a foreign target to forget the more delicate issue of the NBN scam.

Wait till Congress gets on it too…

  2. Talaga naman.

Sa totoo lang, who’s repsonsible for the image of Filipinos as cheaters? Wasn’t it because of Gloria Arroyo’s flip-flopping on the leak in the exam for nurses? And why would she be strict about cheating in board exams when she herself is the number one cheat?

The Filipino people is paying for the crime of Gloria Arroyo.

Anong image? Ulol sila! Our country is being run by a fake government with a fake leader. Everything is fake. From Morayta, Claro M. Recto to Basilan. The dialog in the show should have been this: “Are you sure you have the genuine credentials? You have a fake president, right?” That won’t result in protest but cheers from us Filipinos.

^%&^$%&& nila ulit.

Actually the show may not intending to undermine the “real” medical graduates of Philippines school, but anyone who may have graduated from “Recto School of Medicines”..

But that we can not be sure. On-line Petition is going around here and alreadey signed myself. This may not be malicious, but it really hit home on my part, cus my sis and her husband are both MDs in u.s. of a.

Pinoys have been a subject of ridicules even in the movies. Most of the time, hubby and I just laughed it off, along with the others, when we hear one.

There was a time when one seated beside me said “ain’t that funny?” and continue on laughing. After the movie, he engaged us in a talk, saying the Philippines has become very different from the Philippines he once knew. Turned out he was a retired major general assigned in Subic. Inimbitahan ko tuloy (w/wife) sa bahay for a nice dinner.

It’s another small blessing that some American servicemen, who were assigned in Pinas not too long ago, still treasure the old Pinas and have great respect for Pinoys still.

  7. I really wish people wouldn’t fall for the Malacanang trap! Malacanang is trying hard to position Filipino guns away from the corruption controversy.

It’s an old, very old political technique. Turn to a perceived foreign enemy to distract your people away from more pressing and hot issues at home. When there is a foreign enemy, perceived or not, the tendency for people is to unite even against a most despicable leader!

Argentina did that by invading the falklands. Argentina’s economy was so bad so their president did the only thing to do – he threw the country into a frenzy by training the nation’s guns against a foreign enemy to unite his nation behind him thus was born the haphazard military adventure: invasion of the Falklands!

It could have been a politically astute maneuver if Argentina wasn’t near economic collapse.

What happened? He had a few weeks respite but in the end, his govt was brought down.

We are not in the same economic situation that Argentian was faced then but you see, Malacanang needs a breather to maneuver without getting interrupted so are trying to focus people onto another direction – the US and against a soap opera on TV! Geez…

For heavens sake, Filipinos mustn’t get all excited by this latest Malacanang trick!

I’m not bothered at all with the issue of Desperate Housewives, it’s Gloria’s reputation that’s on the chopping board, not our excellent nurses, caregivers, and physicians.

“Can I check those contracts ‘coz I just want to make sure that they’re not from that pint-sized, would-be President from the Philippines.”

Ahhhh, this would have been perfecto ! I don’t think anyone of us would have complained no ?

  13. There is a basis for the slur, Ellen. I know a lot many Americans who have gone to medical schools in the Philippines, spent a lot of money there in fact, but for some reason could not qualify for medical practice in the U. S. A. So, they had to go back to medical school there. I think it’s the basis of the criticism there.

Baka mapahiya ang Malacanang sa katarantaduhang ginagawa nila, especially when I doubt if the said “slur” has anything to do with those Philippine doctors demoting themselves to be able to work in the US as nurses and caregivers (they call them caretakers there).

  14. cocoy cocoy

Even me, If I’m in doubt, I will ask for credential of a person whom I hire their service to do business with me. There’s nothing wrong about that. If they’re not worthy, why bother? Hit the road and look for someone else.
The serious side to this racial slurs is a question of what political and moral teachings of Filipino immigrants bring with them to this country.

Let’s take a case of an idiot nineteen-year-old Filipino immigrant Reynaldo B.Brucal Jr. pleaded guilty November 15, to raping a severely and mentally handicapped resident of a health care facility at suburban Bloomingdale, Illinois that must have occurred in the late part of 2004,
which gave birth to a daughter. One would think that is as unfair as it gets it’s a Filipino who are tarnishing the reputation of a Filipino itself.

Although I believe that Meyer has the right to express her racist opinions just like I have a right to express mine, The Filipinos treated her completely differently. When she expressed her negative perspectives on Filipino everyone jumped at her and yet when a senator fired her barrage on the Chinese regarding corruption, it’s okey. I cannot imagine any way in which we are insulted .. Gee, she would have practically kissed my scrotum if I was discriminated against Mayer’s slurs, but since I’m just a browned-skinned Pinoy guy, I guess I just don’t have the same right to express my opinions regarding the cheating in a nursing exams, the manufactured diplomas for sale along Recto and that’s okey.

  15. Elvira Sahara Elvira Sahara

Oh, kitam…ayan na ang product of Gloria’s Arithmetic! Nagsimula sa Cheating …naging cheating here, cheating there, and who’s harvesting the bad fruit? The people, our doctors , and very soon, the nurses, the caregivers, and before we know it every Pinoy!
Blaim only one person: the FAKE president!

  16. Frankly, there is no slur there. It is a fact that needs to be exposed!!! Problema affected iyong mga legitimate doctors.

  17. I know some people getting diplomas and not being able to qualify for the medical exam in the USA. Isa pang problema iyang diploma mill as a matter of fact that was a problem when we left the Philippines in the 60’s. Matagal nang kaso iyan as a matter of fact.

  18. Itong call for protest by Ermita, another attempt lang nila iyan to deviate attention from the Fatso and his wife! Ulol, sinong niloloko ninyo?

Bakit? Dahil sa Maguindanao election scam, Hello Garci political scam, Joc-Joc Bolante’s fertilizer scam, ZTE-NBN scam, manufactured economic growth rate, Nursing board exam scam, Recto University, fake public documents at iba pa. She has done nothing to prevent these anomalous transactions. What do we expect from a fake president?

  21. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

This is what Filipinos get if someone before started fakery, thievery, bribery and falsehood. Others would think that Filipinos are quintessential cheats, like our nurses in that cheating scandal, and of course, no less than the highest official of the land who herself stole the presidency twice.

Ystakei, I disagree with you. Slur na nga iyon and then you say there’s no slur. Perhaps we can agree on one thing; that is, there’s some truth to that slur or uncalled for joke.

  24. Tama ka sa sinabi mo HG about the fakery/fraud. Siguro may kamag-anak iyong script-writer na nadenggoy sa Pilipinas re medical diploma. Iyan ang criticism doon sa drama as a matter of fact, not the integrity of Philippine doctors especially graduates of UP for instance. What a bunch of hypocrites!

I would not call it a slur dahil totoo. Slur kung hindi totoo but there is a truth in it.

  26. What a hypocrite this regime is.

Golly, maraming mga Japanese doctors nakakapunta sa America even on invitation by major hospitals in the US and despite the language barrier, bakit hindi ngayon makapunta ang mga doctor na pilipino sa America na hindi kailangang mag-retrain sila as nurses and caregivers? Kung ako, I will rally and protest against this lousy government.

  29. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

Folks, sorry if this repost will come out again later.

This old fart Ermita thinks he and his corrupt boss can get away with the stinking NBN deal by deflecting public attention to that “racial slur.” Another gimmick of dirty politics, but I won’t buy it. Continue with the probe.
On that supposed racial slur, there are 2 sides to the issue. One, as a drama-comedy, maybe Teri Hatcher doesn’t mean it. She must have heard the line (if it were not supplied in the script) from others and just parrot it. Many comedians tell far worse stories about Filipinos in the U.S., including Filipinos themselves like Michelle Malkin. I heard Rex Navarette’s piece, and I tell you his jokes would quickly pass as “racist” if he were a Caucasian or whatever. Malkin is even worse, calling Filipinos as “weasels” in the Angelo dela Cruz kidnapping in Iraq and Gloria’s decision to pull out our small troops there. Further, Teri as an actress is the kind who everybody would doubt as serious, with her dubious sexual proclivity. Just scan Youtube and you will know what I mean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZtTDdXjv-I; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=985A8xxPOK0; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6TOIoxansA, and more).
The other side is that, jokes (or “racist” remarks) like this don’t have a place in a civilized society like the U.S. It should be condemned, just as the blacks did to Don Imus, whose racial line “nappy-headed hos” directed to the mostly black female athletes cost him his dear job. But whether Filipinos should demand blood is another thing, as what Pinoy bloggers did to Malu Fernandez. We are a proud people who quickly hurl invectives to those who insult us, but we are apathetic or numb to those that make us look like fools (e.g., brazen corruption and rampant human rights violation under GMA’s regime). But did we condemn Miriam’s irresponsible tirade against the “Chinese for introducing corruption”?
Let’s try to be rational before acting haphazardly. Don’t get deceived. Malacanang has no business dipping its dirty hands on this stuff. The real enemy is not Teri Hatcher, but Gloria and her wicked regime. It’s she who set the bad example to the world that makes Filipinos look bad to others.

  32. chi chi

Fake Gloria is no shame. Fake pala pati resignation ni Abalos because there’s no letter and no acceptance response.

Fake rin and cancellation ng ZTE. ” Ermita: NBN deal not dead: revival likely”.

With the cheating in the 2006 nursing exam that spread like wildfire worldwire, what did Ermita expect…foreigners singing hallelujah to Pinas?!

That line from the Desperate Housewife was unfortunate and our medical personnel didn’t deserve, so it might as well better if those belonging to the medical field give Gloria a punishment for bringing them untold embarassment.

Zombie Talaga Ermita (ZTE). Gloria Arroyo and her cohorts must show a proof-signed document for the alleged RP-ZTE project cancellation. May ebidensya ba ? Ilabas kung mayroon. Hindi puede ang laway lang.

  37. Diego,

Someone in Quezon’s blog tilted my imagination re ZTE being cancelled in China and Gloria’s flight to India.

Could be she’s still on to NBN project very much but by way of India, ZTE after all is there and could resurect NBN by way of India company.

Another thing is the cheap medicine’s bill – India connection?

  38. chi chi

    Yup, Anna. My suspect, too.

  39. myrna myrna

  40. The furor on the slur in “Housewives” will draw attention away from the ZTE-NBN scandal, but only temporarily (due to the Senate break). That five second dialogue snippet was caught by a disturbed viewer and within hours spread around the world and unsettled the equanimity of whole Pinoy communities. This episode illustrates the power of Information Technology that could be abused and mangled by a National Broadband Network in despotic hands.
And on the ‘discontinued’ ZTE-NBN amorphous contract/agreement, I agree with DKG and reiterate that discontinue is not the same as abrogate, cancel, kill (although admittedly the term is probably the closest applicable to a shapeless entity.)

  41. Filipino-Americans express outrage over Desperate Housewife’s racist remark

The national alliance of Filipino-American groups known as the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns, or NAFCON, expressed outrage and offense over racist comments uttered by actress Teri Hatcher in the ABC primetime series “Desperate Housewives”.

In a recent episode, Susan (Hatcher) exaggerates after her gynecologist suggests she is nearing menopause by saying, “Can I just check those diplomas because I just want to make sure that they are not from some med school in the Philippines.” A video clip can be accessed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34_qvfh3X7c

“These types of derogatory remarks are obviously upsetting because Filipino nurses and doctors are imported to the US out of this country’s grave need for quality healthcare professionals. Our community is at the backbone of the US healthcare system,” states NAFCON spokesperson Rico Foz.

NAFCON have been actively spearheading for the past 6 months a heated international campaign for the Sentosa 27++ nurses, healthcare professionals from the Philippines recruited by the fraudulent Sentosa Recruitment Agency under false contracts. The nurses also suffered backwages and other exploitative measures by the Sentosa management.

“We are proud of our Filipino nurses and other healthcare professionals. It is no secret that our country’s healthcare professionals are the best in the world. Often times, it is their employers here in the US, not foreign nurses, that bring down the quality of healthcare in this country,” Foz added, citing Sentosa’s imposition of a steep 60:1 patient to nurse ratio in Sentosa facilities.

“We demand an apology from ABC, the producers and writers of Desperate Housewives, whom we are certain have been serviced by quality Filipino nurses and doctors,” Foz ended.

  42. Neonate,

    absolutely dead on!

Imagine if only our fil-am folks would use the power of internet technology and the power of the blog to do the same thing they are doing now against the NBN deal, something might just tilt in favour of those against the deal but here they are submerging cyberspace with desperate housewife talk!

  43. Have nothing against the sort of healthy on line defence or attack against the Desperate Housewife producers but when Malacanang, particularly no less than Ed Ermita joins the crowd, then that’s another, really another thing.

I bet Congressmen and Senators, Cabinet members if they are not restrained will join in — that will be what Gloria wants to happen. Oh boy!

  44. What I’d like is for our friends in the US to do the same thing about the NBN corruption deal — I wanna see them in same fighting mood! Then I will believe they are patriots, otherwise, no dice! (They’re merely feeling slighted coz their lil amor propio has been a lil brusied…)

The real fight should be waged agaisnt the promoters of corruption and that’s in Manila. Our Fil-Am friends should wield the same fighting spirit targetting the corrupt in Manila because all this bad reputation that’s circulating about Pinoys around the world emanates from Malacanang.

    Let’s not be fooled!

  45. Let’s focus on the real culprit! As ellen says, Gloria’s is responsible for the state of affairs the nurses and from which the medical profession to a large extent suffers.

Our Fil Am friends can get the ABC producers to apologize but do you think the whole world’s belief about our nurses will change? No!

We’ve got to refocus our priorities now. Fil-Ams must refocus! Easy to demand ABC to apologize but the perception will remain unless they help rid the Philippines of the most corrupt Filipino today!

  46. Waste of precious ration to fight over trivia!

    Re-focus your priorities Fil Ams!

  47. Ellen,

I’m not impressed by these Fil-Ams! Galvanizing themselves, exerting efforts and working the net to oust Gloria would be a better use of their internet space and time – that way, we can show the world that we are not a corrupt people, we don’t condone the corrupt in our midst, we do not tolerate corruption; only way to convince the world otherwise, all these Fil Am hypes are really INUTILE!

  48. pechanco pechanco

Geez, let’s not be over sensitive over TV trivia.

  53. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

    Ana, Neonate,

The racial slur issue is a matter of perspective. Many Fil-Ams consider it a big deal, because they live with it and contend with it on a daily basis. Still many, however, don’t look at it that way, saying that it’s a common experience in multi-racial America, where values of rationality and debate are emphasized over emotions. (Notice Teri’s use, “some med schools in the Philippines.”) Not for me, because I live in 2 worlds and am terribly affected by this incident, just as I worry about events in RP.

I don’t expect the OFW power to settle this racial matter here. Except for Fil-Ams, most have nothing to do with America or would care less.

Even here in the US, the Filipinos are divided. The fault line seems to be drawn between the hypersensitive (balat sibuyas) and the open-minded. Surely, Teri’s one-liner is made in bad taste (the script writer didn’t even bother checking if it’s culturally offensive), but lots of bad words/actions are also said and made of other ethnics inside or outside of a contrived setting like this American TV drama-comedy. There’s no point going to “war” in the Teri Hatcher case. It will pass as another simple joke and entertainment to most Americans.

I see the NBN and its scandal-ridden sibs more insidious to denounce than this ethnic slur.

For the benefit of those who just heard about it, let me reproduce the dialogue, below:

    ============================================
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sqyGdc5H6g

In “Desperate Housewives,” a drama-comedy show, Teri Hatcher made a remark about Filipino doctors/nurses. She was talking to her doctor about menopause:

Doctor: I know for a lot of women, the word menopause has negative connotations – they hear aging, brittle bones, lack of sexual desire…

Teri: Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.

Doctor: Look, there’s a simple blood test we can use.

Teri: I don’t need any test, I’m not old enough for menopause.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
In America, you can’t practice your profession if you are NOT qualified – meaning you MUST pass the board exam. Doctors (private practice) display their certificates to show they are LICENSED.

Filipino Health care professionals are being praised all over the world and this is one profession, without a doubt, the filipinos CAN be proud of.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
I thought that’s your purpose here – to use the net to oust gloria? Fil-Ams have started to learn the American way. You can ask HawaiianGuy why politicians in Hawaii are courting the Filipino community. The net is a powerful thing in AMERICA where almost everybody have access to computers.
The Filipino community should take advantage of this since most Filipino homes here have computers.

I told you so. I’ve written about it from day one this kolokoy told the press that he was resigning complete with te props (wife and son there to give him a shoulder to cry on baga). I told you, it would not be valid without a letter of resignation, acceptance by the one who appointed him, and the formalities and all. Sinong niloloko nila. O baka nakalimutan na nilang may mga ganoong procedure just because the inutil has proclaimed without the Filipinos knowing it that she is queen now and the Philippines is owned by her and her husband, et al.

And this slur kuno, I am not buying it because it is just to deviate attention from the real issues. Mas maraming slur ang mga kano sa mga pilipino like what these Fil-Ams have been saying that Filipinos cannot kick out the idiots unless there is a stamp of approval from the White House. That for me is the biggest slur on Filipinos not this expose on these Americans trying to get into the medical profession in the USA even with fake diplomas from the Philippines, which BTW is not just a rumor but a fact.

Doctor arrested for fake prescriptions, possession of drugs
    By Nicole Oliverio

PUNTA GORDA – Punta Gorda Police arrest a well-known heart surgeon, on charges he forged prescriptions and used narcotics for his own personal use.

Around 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Punta Gorda Police Detectives executed a search warrant at the medical office of Doctor Raymond Waters in Punta Gorda. The search warrant was executed in relation to an ongoing Punta Gorda Police Department investigation into prescription fraud.

On September 12th Punta Gorda Police responded to a report of a fraudulent prescription at the Publix Pharmacy. Further investigation revealed that a former employee of Dr. Waters had been obtaining prescription medications to include scheduled narcotics and muscle relaxants over the course of the past year.

  65. To me it’s alright to have robust on line defence of Pinoys coz of this desperation over the TV soap by Fil-Ams who are upping the ante against ABC or whatever TV station that was but my beef is why aren’t the Fil-Ams galvanizing against corruption in Pinas (that’s the promoter of bad reputation for our nurses abroad) in the same manner they’re doing it now?

OK, their pride was hurt – fine to hit back if they want to but really as I said am not impressed because if they only galvanize when they are hit in the stomach then what’s so impressive about that? Show the fighting spirit, that united fighting spirit in tackling the root cause of the problem, then I would be impressed, until then, no dice!

As Titser says, Fil-Ams have the better resources, better logistics than any Fil groups all over the world so use that fantastic advantage, their computer access, etc. to show real patriotism – tackle corruption in home country in unison much like what they’re doing now against TV soap!

  66. Ang talagang drama na nangyayari ay hindi sa Desperate Houswives but in the bowels of the Philippine society caused by corruption in Malacanang.

Not all Filipinos are jerk and stupid like most of you are. We may be a third world country but somehow and in a way, if our doktors or professionals will be given a chance to prove themselves to the rest of the world, we are far better than you. I know your public schools.

Even they are Americans, if they have fake diplomas from Pinas, they can’t practice medical profession in the US. Hindi accredited sa US ang Pinas schools except UP. Even then they have to study more and pass med exams here.

    Neonate;
Let me preface my answer with this. I know for an absolute stone cold fact that at least through out the years doctors have been suppressed by mainstream medicine practice, becoming a doctor isn’t an easy task. Let’s put ourselves in the same shoes as would be doctor in America. This will give us a better understanding of the process and sacrifices made by every person who has earned a MD in the 20 some years of training and studies. We decided by the time we reached sixth grade that we wanted to become a doctor because we like helping people and we are very interested in the sciences and biology. We work hard in high school and do very well on the S.A.T.’s. Its time for college. We once again study diligently and your average GPA is 3.57 or better. We then study for the grueling Medical College Admission Test (M.C.A.T.) required by most medical schools. We were admitted. We work our tail off 16 hours a day 6/7 a week for 4 more years of very determined effort. We graduate in medical school and start paying off those college and medical school loans of around $200,000. Now its time to embark on residency and specialty training.

  73. cocoy cocoy

    cont;
You have chosen to specialize in Internal Medicine and to sub-specialize in oncology. That’s about another 5/6 years training. You’ve finally made it. All the gut busting hard work has paid off. At 33 you are an oncologist. So, you begin treating patients blissfully ignorant of the many treatments you are not allowed to prescribe. After several years you become increasingly disillusioned with the
orthodox treatment. You see the abysmal results you are getting and even the people that have completed five-year remissions; the side effects are appalling. Over the years several patients tell you about alternatives that had worked for a friend, so you decide to look into it. You start meeting with people who have the medical records proving that they had used different treatments and they are now cured. After a year of so of investigation and talking with some alternative treatment, you really think that there is something to this. You also find out that if the AMA/NCI find out that you even prescribe wrong medication to your patients, you face serious repercussions from the AMA. Really becoming involved in unapproved treatments will result in loss of hospital privileges, and probably the loss of your medical license.

  74. cocoy cocoy

    cont;
Not to mention being blackballed by your peers and branded a “quack doctor”. You find yourself in a very difficult dilemma. But everything that you have worked for is at stake. You make $500,000 a year and live a very comfortable lifestyle that you have certainly earned. You still owe $75,000 on those school loans, have two kids, a seven thousand
a month mortgage on a house, two car loans od Mercedes and BMW and all the other expenses that go with your lifestyle such as membership in a Golf Club. You are nearly 40 years old. How will you earn a living if you lose your medical license? As you can see becoming doctors have much to lose at hindi palakasan ng loob. This is the reason I ask credential if I’m doubt. I don’t trust young doctors. It’s my Health and Life.

  75. Chi: If there’s once field that US monitors tightly, its the medical field.

He finished medicine at U. E. kasi mura daw ang tuition, but the poor fellow had to go back to school in the US. Sising-sisi!

My sister is a licensed physician in the Philippines, but she had to go back to school in the US to get her license so she can practice in California. Ngayon Supervisor na siya with her medical credential.

At least, hindi niya kailangang i-demote ang sarili niya kasi US citizen.

Mas gusto ko iyan. I won’t fall for any Malacanang led protest na puro arte lang wala namang credibility. Bakit sila masasaktan sa quip in that soap opera e totoo naman?

I don’t think the Filipinos will have such reputation if the Philippine government since 1986 had done better than Marcos, and had not pimped Filipinos overseas even shamelessly calling them “the Philippines’ No. 1 Export Commodity.” Why encourage Filipinos to leave their country? For me, that is more obscene than the supposed “slur” on Filipinos in that US soap dish.

  80. chi chi

    Anna,

I’m always dismayed when I talked to some pinoys here in some parts of the east and mainland US. Majority are so distant from the current happenings in Pinas, ang gusto lang pag-usapan ay ang kanilang sweldo, trabaho at sosyalan. Ginto na kung makakilala ako ng pinoy na medyo enlightened about the Pinas of today.

Most of the concerned pinoys, as titser said, are already blogging, wala ng magagawa sa iba pa.

There was a time that I ended up lecturing a group of acquaintances about Pinas situation under Gloria, nada. Mas gusto nilang pag-usapan ang Santakrusan!

When I got visitors from Pinas naman, ganun din, mas marami pa akong alam. Ano ba ‘yun?

Kaya namundok na lang kami dito, at least I can discuss my sentiments about Pinas ‘with the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees!’

  81. tayabasin_eh tayabasin_eh

“Even they are Americans, if they have fake diplomas from Pinas, they can’t practice medical profession in the US. Hindi accredited sa US ang Pinas schools except UP. Even then they have to study more and pass med exams here.”

FYI din po, ABC network just released a short letter of apology.

  82. vic vic

Chi, I have the same observation her lately..Recent arrivals here are independent immigrant and mostly were middle class income earners back home as most of them can afford the processing fees and the “show money” for their first few months until the benefits kick in (10grands for adults and 2 for dependants) but sadly most of them are not so much aware of the scope of corruption going under their noses, until they have the comparison as what is happening here, where they are suprised that they don’t even need to go out of their residences to file their government papers as all can be mostly done On-Line,and most don’t even require users fees. But the attitudes of calling eveyone sir and ‘mam even knowing the person’s name sounds so Corny, especially at work…

  83. norpil norpil

ayun naman pala at nag apologize na, o paano di tapos na ang kwentuhan. baka naman ala gma apology lang iyan na ang ibig sabihin ay sorry until next time na naman. mabuti kung sorry with a promise not to do it again.

  84. Chi,

Parang carbon copy tayo ng experience. EXACTLY THE SAME HERE! Useless talking to Pinoys (the more enlightened ones) about Pinas – not interested, pareho niyan puro sila karaoke parties na lang and picnic sa parks.

Every Sunday, when I drive to the golf course, we pass a park with a lake, nakupo full of Pinoys singing dancing, eating you can see from a distance.

Once I accepted to attend a Fil Chaplain’s sort of community party (for the more “enlightened” pinoys, professionals and not just doing house chores)… Wala, puro trabaho at payabangan what countries they’ve visited, tapos tawanan – kainan, (not me at all coz I eat little) singing (nakupo, not me at all) tapos dancing (talagang di puwede ako)… but absolutely no interest in things happening in Pinas.

But on the other hand, I’m happy for them because at least, they are happy away from home. They are not a nuissance here. On the contrary, those I met have impressed me very much. For that, sige na lang.

  85. Norpil,

Episode hasn’t ended… I read Palace is gunning for a formal written apology through the DFA!

  86. pechanco pechanco

That was not the first time the show and the producer made racial and derogatory remarks. They also offended the African-Americans and the gays. However, the other groups reacted more strongly than the Filipino community in the US; therefore got better results from the show. It’s high time that Filipinos make their presence felt in the US. Don’t they know that there are many Fil-Am movie stars, entertainers and artists? Example is comedian Rob Schneider whose mother is a pure Filipina. The Fil-Am artists should say something now.

Whaddyah know, I am DOM, doctor of madicine. I cannot grasp whats the fuss is all about. I went on to study the desperate apology and I don’t see why we cant accept it. Its even unnecessary. Its better though than try to engage further anyone with implied monetary renumerations. That’s fleecing, or better understood as the other end of corruption where we are better known of universally. Apostol and his other people I am sure could easily take Teri Hatcher off the hook in the first place for she did not generalize all the doctors who graduated in the Philippines. The slur only defined some from med school we know to well that diplomated many at the Recto university belt. Its caveat emptor for Teri to know what brand and expiry dates of the goods she’d take. DTI espouses that. But of course that’s a very good advertisement taking place now selling our very good doctors whose alma mater did not include the Recto University.

Valdemar, if you’re a DOM (Doctor of Medicine), GMA is DOP (not Doctor of Psychology but Puta). Hawaiianguy, I don’t believe the Fil-Ams are boycotting the show. Since when did the Fil-Ams show unity and support? Marami ang taga Kenya (kanya-kanyang interest lang). The show’s rating might have even improved with that mess. Those who have not seen the show or seldom watched it might have been watching it now. When I suggested that a lawsuit be filed against the show, it was to show our anger and determination to fight all the way.
It’s not a matter of winning or losing the case. Bakit sila mapapahiya? Baka ikaw lang kabayan.

  114. hawaiianguy hawaiianguy

Pechanco, if you read the pinoy reactions at Youtube, you would get an idea how many Fil-Ams are now boycotting the show. But don’t expect a 100% unity, as ever. Also, don’t expect that Fil-Am lawyers will take your bait to sue the company. Rodel Rodis made a pungent remark on this, but filing a suit is different. They know better if doing so is worthwhile or just a waste of time. Don’t get me wrong, I hate all kinds of racism and oppression, esp. if directed against Pinoys. But I would rather use my full energy and limited resource on lambasting our own crooks who oppress their own people than launch a crusade on Teri or ABC Studios. It’s enough that I show my indignation and that from now on I swear I will never, ever watch Teri’s movies.

  115. pechanco pechanco

I don’t expect a 100% unity of Pinoys in the US. I don’t even expect 50% of it. And why should Fil-Am lawyers take my bait (this term is inappropriate)? Lawyers know when there’s money. Some need publicity and exposure to help their career.
How one shows his indignation depends on how he strongly feels about the slur. Let’s start in Hawaii where the Filipino community has a great number.

what a life. lahat fake. fake president, fake mandate, fake resignation (?), and, guess what, fake eggs. i received a forwarded e-mail from a friend about fake chicken eggs that allegedly originate from china. the article describes how the counterfeit eggs are made and how they look like the real thing. if this is indeed true, then i will be very careful with the eggs that i buy and cook. the thing is, not everything is what it seems.

i have watched on youtube the portion of the “desperate housewives” series wherein teri hatcher mentioned that spiel. as a filipino, i do symphatize with what many of our fellow countrymen abroad, especially the nurses & doctors who i believe, are the most hurt by that unfortunate remark but when i look at the other side of things, i believe teri’s character (or the scriptwriter) is merely parodying a fact that we filipinos took for granted.

    mideast,

    what in particular?

is it the same as what most of us here had been parroting regarding this SHAMELESS administration?

    bull’s eye!

i believe we have tolerated the cheating, thieving & lying of the scoundrels in government that our collective sensitivities as a nation & race has already been de-sentisized. parang wala lang. pasok sa isang tenga, labas sa kabila. we were outraged for a while when we heard or see chicaneries around us but later on, it’s business as usual. parang walang nangyari. maybe that’s one of the reason why fil-ams and other filipino communities around the world aren’t that interested sa mga happenings sa pinas coz they see that kung yung mga nasa pinas nga, parang walang ginagawa against abuses, corruption, etc., how much more from them who are thousands of miles from their native country?

hatcher’s remark, though a parody, was a slur, i admit. no doubt it. but we have to do more than show our displeasure by putting words into action. if not, then i believe this will not be the last time that another teri hatcher will disparage our country and our fellow filipinos.

ang title sa itaas: “Malacañang to ‘Desperate Housewives’: Apologize for slur”

fed up pinoys to malakanyang hoodlums: lumayas na kayo diyan, mga ‘ayup!

Gusto nang Malacanang sabihin ng show: “I am sorry”…”It was lapse of judgement in comedy”.

You’re damned right! But could it be that the Teri Hatcher case is just a tentacle or symptom of a lingering, or more overriding problem? Say, the problem of cheating by our own leaders? The faking (or buying of diplomas in Recto), aside from the rise of diploma mills, is a microcosm of leadership itself. Follow the leader is an apt adage to describe this anomaly.

Maybe we should start from the bigger scheme of things.

  124. pechanco pechanco

Tama ka rin Hawaiianguy…It’s case testicle of a lingering problem. Truth hurts, as they say.
