To say that Romy Neri was a disappointment last Wednesday at the Senate hearing is an understatement.
Here’s a guy, blessed with intelligence and good education and what did he do? He allowed himself to be used to hide the truth from the Filipino people that pays him in order to protect a corrupt, fake president.
Never mind Abalos, who is in the same league as Lintang Bedol and Virgilio Garcillano. This NBN ZTE scam is just another item in the lengthening list of crimes they have committed against the Filipino people starting with declaring winner a president who did not win in the 2004 elections.
But we thought Neri had enough decency left in him to tell the truth, nothing but the truth, as he pledged at the Senate. We even prayed for him.
Oh well, we take it as God’s way of telling us we were wrong about Neri.
I’m reproducing here an article by Manuel Buencamino posted in the Uniffors blog, an online forum by an underground group of foreign service staff. Buencamino, an Atenean like Neri, is unsparing. He captures vividly our feelings for what Neri did:
I was at the Senate hearing all day, from 8 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. I went there to see Romy Neri confirm that Abalos did offer him a bribe. He did. But that’s as far as he would go.
The little shit hid behind executive privilege all day, refusing to reveal any more than that he reported the bribe offer to Gloria.
I must admit I was too distracted, enjoying too immensely, the skewering of Abalos I did not catch on to Neri immediately. It was Ping Lacson who finally exposed Neri.
Lacson realized that Neri was not going to budge from his executive privelege position so he offered Neri a way out. If he couldn’t talk because of executive privilege then maybe Bondoc could do it for him, considering that he was a source of many of Bondoc’s information.
So Lacson asked Jarius Bondoc how many times he talked to Neri and if he was willing to reveal what they talked about.
Jarius replied, ‘yes but I have to ask Neri’s permission first.” Lacson then asked Neri if he would permit Jarius to reveal the contents of their conversations.
Neri replied, ‘I will not grant permission.’
That’s it, I told myself. Neri was sent to rat on Abalos. He didn’t go to the Senate to tell the truth. He went there to throw Abalos to the wolves.
Joey de Venecia is an old and dear friend. We talked when he took a short break from the hearing. He told me, “Romy just lost all his credibility.” I added, “And whatever respect I had for him.”
Joey mentioned that Romy was getting texts from Malacanan all day. And, as soon as Gloria’s plane in New York, she started texting.
He’s been receiving texts from the little micromanager,” Joey told me. (Romy was seated beside Bondoc who was seated beside Joey.)
Earlier in the day, there was a general call to go to Neri’s house in Sta. Mesa Heights to protect him from threats to his life.
Linggoy Alcuaz, who was at the Senate hearing, left early to organize the vigil. Leah Navarro told me she was going to the vigil and asked me if I was going. This was a few hours before Neri showed his true colors.
Leah and I were also texting each other even though we were both at the Senate because we were seated in different areas. She had text me the details of the vigil and asked me to pass it on. Linggoy also texted me, adding he acquired eight tents.
After Neri blew it, I texted Leah. “Cancel the fucking vigil. Let the little rat fend for himself.” Leah replied immediately, “Cancelled.” and gave me the thumbs up sign. I texted Linggoy, “Kalimutan mo na yan vigil. Bahala na yan putanginang yan sa buhay niya.”
I always thought that Abalos was the most despicable character in the ZTE saga. I was wrong. Neri the RAT is.
The worst character in any criminal enterprise is the gang member who rats, the one who acts as the pawn to protect the capo de tuti capo by sacrificing another loyal consigliori.
I thought Neri was an eagle. He is a rat with wings.
One of Neri’s high school classmates, who was at the hearing to lend moral support to Neri and had left as soon as Neri refused to allow Bondoc to speak, texted me from his car: “Puta, kung lalake ang in-offer ni Abalos kay Neri malamang kumagat pa.”

The senators should also learn how to ask the right question and how to ask them, to be able to extract meaningful answers from the resource person being grilled. No more silly line of questioning. Something like a ‘yes or no’ type of thing. Even if the person invoke ‘executive privilege’ on a particular question, then the people would know more or less what would be the answer. Allow me to cite my brief eulogy to Neri in case he become another casualty.
Mind you about Neri’s Lips, it was swollen because he buried his head in the toilet in shame. But, he is a reasonable man though to his Master, “ You see,Mama Presidenti, Me,I never Snitch”.His strongest qualities why he’s the favorite are his lack of intelligence and industriousness, He knows only how to fill the coffer of his master. He is neither brilliant nor notably talented, but he is somewhat above average in intelligence compared to his master; his mind seems suffering from chemical imbalance and under the medication of “Prozac” unalert, unorderly, and illogical. His speeches and arguments, if dully phrased and often disingenuous and misunderstood having a short tongue, if he don’t want to talk, he invoke, he learned it from his uncle a Chinese,”No Talk, No Mistakes, Long Talk, Long Mistakes” He has roughly the same order of mental incompetence. He has always been fiercely ambitious. As a student in high school, he was a “Geek” and a teacher’s pet. On his prom night he could not get a date. He failed his biology class because he’s afraid to dissect the frog. He never attended his ROTC drill and he never knew the meaning of “Attention” He’s out of tune in music having a thick lips. These accomplishments are no different from those of other students he hanged-out,they played Barbie doll under the tree on recess, but they are nonetheless praiseworthy and, in Neri’s case, particularly important because hard work tenacity, and single minded ambition are still his outstanding positive character in keeping a secret with 200 pieces.
What is wrong with Neri is his cowardness, untrained weak stomach drinking San Miguel Beer, the absence of his aggressively masculine, the paucity of his talents, the very ordinariness of the half-man, half woman.
His emptiness and these glaring deficiencies are more significant than the intermittent squalor of his methods or whether he is gay, lesbian or bisexual, he’s still a virgin though. Every Filipinos now has become his enemies and is the object of controversy on the ZTE. He uses practical means that may sometimes be impugned. Neri is probably the most hated ugliest Filipino today, but this would not matter as long as he had substantial achievements to cover the crime of his master, there has been widespread awareness that he might, at any moment, become hired killers casualties through an act of fate. Neri has been the man on the hour. He has blocked off potential competitors on the avenues to the throne by his presence and his manipulations. Speaker’s wife: Friendship with Arroyo roiled by NBN scandal
But says truth, not friendship, is the issue.
She said she was hurting for her stepson, whom she has to look after, because “he is telling the truth.”
She said that before the young De Venecia III revealed Abalos’ alleged $10-million bribe offer for him to withdraw his company’s unsolicited proposal to undertake the NBN project, her son talked to her about what he would do.
“I told him his testimony would affect the family, how we could be threatened and be subjected to all kinds of black propaganda and that they might even remove his father as Speaker,” she said.
De Venecia III, however, told her: “My father raised me to always tell the truth.”
“And that’s exactly what he did,” Gina said.
“What he said was what really happened. Walang dagdag, walang bawas [No more, no less].”
